Robins garage, in Palmerston North. We both went and next arranged to meet at Keith's shed, and in this way a small group of seven formed the Manawatu Classic Motorcycle Club, Keith being inaugural President, and I the secretary. He had a magnificent collection down in his basement, which we all inspected, some near new bikes, others fully restored, and more still awaiting the 'touch'.

Notice for Buyers: Special Conditions pertaining to this sale Where a lot comprises a number of items, the exact number is not usually stated because of possible additions and adjustments after catalogue publication.

I learned, as did the others that Keith machined, painted, plated, upholstered and did almost everything himself, except when it got beyond him, which wasn't often. His standards were high, and several times I compared my efforts with his, and found mine lacking. His work being thorough, immaculate and complete.

While all reasonable care was taken in sorting and describing the lots in this catalogue, the very large number of parts inevitably means a possibility of some errors of description. For this reason buyers must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy and condition of the lots in which they are interested.

We rode miles and miles together, I on my Triumphs and Keith on his favourite Red Hunter, or the Vincent or one of the other bikes to Wellington, New Plymouth, Napier in fact all over the place. Keith's last ride was in March 1994 when we both took our Velocettes to Feilding to the Velocette rally. It was a ride and one I shall never forget, and I am proud he chose my company on this occasion.

The majority of the motor cycles are in running order but a number may not have been ridden for some years. All bikes were stored dry with batteries and fuel removed. Oil was applied to the bores once a year and the motors were turned over regularly.

Terms of Payment A Buyer's Premium often percent applies to this sale. GST is payable on the premium only. E.G. If the hammer price is $1,000 a buyer's premium of $100 will be incurred with GST of 12.5% added to the premium making a total of $1112.50

I grew to know a man with very high standards, both in restoration, and in his dealings with others. He was scrupulous with both. If Keith said it was so, then so it was. This collection of motorcycles did not just happen, Keith was not merely another collector, who went out to buy everything he could lay hands on. Keith Staples was firstly a man who loved to ride his motorcycles. Every one in his collection meant something special to him. He collected it, and re-built it for a special reason. These bikes were restored, and then ridden. Some he grew to like more than others, and one or two perhaps he learned to dislike as well. But they all reflected Keith and his love for two wheels.

Payment for lots must be in cash or by Eftpos unless prior credit arrangements have been made with Webb's and approved in writing. Credit cards will be accepted only with the addition of the credit card company's commission added to the account total. This commission is 3.5% Person al cheques will NOT be accepted.

Removal of lots purchased

Keith was a real motorcyclist, the sort who rides on wet days as well as fine, and indeed I once accompanied him when it was snowing with both ofus telling the other just how much fun we were having, and each knowing that we really were not. He was a motorcyclist, with a passion for our form of transport. Non motorcyclists don't know about this, but real motorcyclists can recognise it in one another when they meet. Keith was one of those filled with this passion.

All lots must be paid for and collected by 3pm Monday 20th January. Absentee buyers will have their lots held until payment has been received. Lots are at the buyer's risk from the fall of the hammer. Any costs attending the holding of lots will be payable by the buyer.

Keith Staples 1936-1994. An Appreciation

Real friends don't come along too often, and when you lose one, it is more than a just small sadness. I hope that this has helped some of you who never knew Keith Staples to appreciate the man he was. Never boastful, extremely modest, yet a man who accomplished much, with his own two hands, and he could have boasted long and hard if he had felt cause to but he never did, not once. A quiet man, loyal and true to his friends, loving to his family. Above all , Keith Staples was a true gentleman. I can say no finer. Keith was among the best. Adrian Gover

I first met Keith at a motorcycle rally in Napier, in the early 1970's, when we shared a cabin , with others at a rally for motorcyclists, and by morning we had become firm friends. I lived in Woodville, Keith at Aokautere, and we met again and again at Vintage Car rallies, but both of us were on our motorcycles. On e day. in the late 1970's we were discussing the fact that th e VCC at that time was not really oriented towards motorcycles, and the need to look elsewhere, when we saw an advert for a get together in Glen 4

The Rod Coleman Collection Wheels Hubs fitted with new sealed bearing. In some cases new axles made. Hubs rebuilt with new spokes and new rims. New brake linings fitted.

Rod Coleman now aged seventy, Has a deserved reputation as one of New Zealand's most successful motor racing cyclists. He was the first New Zealander to win an Isle of Man TI back in 1954, and in that same year he finished third in the world championships.

Magneto Armatures rewound to give 50% greater voltage than original specifications. Chrome Plate All chrome plating stripped and renewed.

From 1951 Coleman was a test rider for the AJS factory in England' and as such, he was the first non British resident to ride for any British motor cycle company.

Painting All paint work renewed with modem high gloss twopot reaction lacquer.

In 1952 in his second Isle of Man TI, he was the first AJS across the finish line, taking third place in the 350cc class, and fourth place in the 500cc class. In the same year he raced both classes in seven major European Grand Prix and TI events, winning two and coming second in four. His impressive record for 1952 also included winning with his two team members, twenty one world endurance records for all distances up to nine hours.

Excelsior Manxman These bikes were produced from 1935 to 1939 in 250,350 and 500cc engine sizes. With the 250cc model having the most successful European Racing Results. There was to have been a post war new model Manxman and one prototype engine and gearbox was built in 1951 but never put into production. The actual one off prototype has been built into a complete motor cycle of 50's styling and is included in this collection. (See lot 88)

After winning the 1954 Isle of Man TI Rod Coleman retired and returned to New Zealand.

Norton The collection of three Norton Racing Models, 1936, 1948 and 1952 is noteworthy for the fact that it illustrates the evolution of the Norton spring frame. The 1936 first type known as the "Pepperpot", very heavy. The lighter 1948 which earned the name of "Garden Gate" because of its poor handling characteristics and lastly the 1952. McAndless designed gaining the more favourable title of "Featherbed ".

Restoration Specifications

All of these motor cycles were found in a dismantled state and mostly in very poor condition with many items missing. In particular panel steel parts were too corroded to use again. These have been replaced with new items. No expense has been spared in completely reconditioning engines and gearboxes back to full, ready to race condition. In many cases new items have been made to replace those missing.

84 Norton 1936 500cc. The Racing Specification Nortons

were not named as Manx models until 1947. This model is a replica of the racing models as used by the 'works' riders in 1936. It features the very first type of Norton spring frame first built and used in 1936. Because it is very heavy holes were drilled in the large cast plunger housings making them look like a 'pepperpot'. Hence the nickname. The motor is a full race engine having magnesium crankcases and cambox, The large finned cylinder head was also first used in the 1936 works model and was not available to private riders until 1947. The crankcase number identifies this engine as 1937. 1936 was also the first year for 8inch front brakes on the works models. The hub being deeply finned. The conical hub was not introduced until 1937. 1936 also saw the use of aluminium petrol tanks for the first time on the works models. (see illustration page 17)

New Items Petrol and oil tanks, filler caps. Mudguards and stays, Exhaust pipes, Seats, some re-covered with leather, Rev. counters and gearboxes, Tyres and tubes, Rims and spokes, Chains, Rubberware, Rear suspension units. Motor, Gearbox and Clutch Main and big end bearings renewed where necessary. The alloy conrods in the Excelsiors nom1alised, stress relieved and shot peened. Cylinders rebored or sleeved. New pistons where necessary. New valves and guides where necessary. Gearboxes of close ratio type. New gears fitted where necessary. Clutches as original and rebuilt.

Thomas Norton Manx 1992 250cc.

Excelsior Manxman Prototytpe 1951 250cc Very little history is known of this motor. It lay under a bench, in the race shop for thirty years. It had been

Built by Brian Thomas, ofFeilding, and raced by Rod Coleman successfully in classic events, this scaled and 250cc sized replica Manx has proven to be one of the fastest 250's in Classic Racing in New Zealand. The motor has been completely reliable when running at 10,000 R.P.M. There have been many attempts to convert a 350cc Manx Norton to a 250cc. None has been successful competitively because the full sized 350cc is too heavy and too large, as well as the motor being too big. As the illustrations shows - the Thomas Norton placed alongside a 350cc Manx is diminutive, as a 250cc should be, obviously the frame is much smaller as well as the motor. 17inch wheels with scaled down Manx replica hubs are fitted to scaled down forks. The only items whicl: have not been reduced in size and width are the gearbox, clutch and carburettors. (see illustration page 18)

assembled but never started as the oiling system had not been completed. After purchase this was completed by fitting check valves and pressure relief valve. The illustration shows it ready for first start up. The engine design is far more advanced than other British racing engines of the 1951 era. The overhead camshaft is driven by a chain enclosed within cylinder and head castings. To accommodate the short connecting rod and over square dimensions of bore and stroke, a small bob weight crankshaft is attached to a larger diameter outside flywheel. The design of which is unique in being enclosed. As can be seen from the photos the design is again very unique for it's period in having no external oil pipes. Also with this engine there is not the traditional 'built in' oil leaks. Plus with the oil reservoir, being in the large finned aluminium sump oil cannot drain back into the motor overnight as was the case with other designs of that tin1e. Ignition is supplied by battery and coil. Starts easily and runs very well. (see illustration page 21)

86 Norton Manx 1952 600cc

There were a few engines built as 600cc units for sidecar racing. Their bore and stroke was 82mm x 113mm. this motor has been bored to 84mm which makes total capacity 626cc. It also has a new, shorter than standard, connecting rod. New cylinder and piston. Frame, forks, wheels, handlebars, controls, seat, suspension units etc. are all new. In other words the entire rolling chassis is new. New petrol tank and chainguard. Plus exhaust pipe and megaphone. A very desirable and unique example of a Featherbed Manx Norton. (see illustration page 18)

90 MKS KTT Velocette 350cc

The MK8 brought racing success back to Velocette once again. Both in 1938 when the works riders first used them and in 1939 when they became available for sale. The biggest improvement was the radical, for that time, oil/air damped spring frame. Although it was first introduced on the works bikes in 1936. The aluminium hubs with the consequence of keeping the brakes cooler were also a big improvement. The engine is the same as the MK7. The model is in new condition. It has a new engine fitted in a new frame with new wheels including the hubs. (see illustration page 21)

87 Norton Manxman 1948 350cc

The motor is a standard 1948 Manx long stroke which is completely original. It is in good condition and is an excellent example of a 'Garden'Gate Manx Norton. (see illustration page 20) 88

The Keith Staples Collection of Spare Parts

Excelsior Manxman 1939 250cc In 1939 the 'works' racers used a spring frame and

used a close coupled engine and gearbox. The gearbox being bolted to the rear of the engine. An aluminium cylinder head was also fitted. The standard engines still used the bronze head. This example has the same rear spring units fitted to a standard frame. It also has the same, wedge operated, girling rear brake mechanism as used on the "works" models. In the late 40's aluminium cylinders and heads were made and marketed by Doug Beasley. This engine has been built using these. This model is an example of the specifications made up by private riders in the late 40's long after the factory had stopped manufacture of the Manxman at the outbreak of World War II.
