George Foster George Foster was born in Central Otago in 1911 , moving to Christchurch at an early age where he married and raised a family and remained for the rest of his life. Initially a collector of watches , following the gifting to him of a German soldier's wrist watch after World Warl , he soon developed an interest in clock movements, preferring those which demonstrated some technical ilmovation in the evolution of horology. By means of intensive reading and correspondence with leading horologists world wide, George Foster gradually acquired a level of expertise that placed him at the forefront of the small circle of amateur horologists in New Zealand, and his expertise was far from only theoretical. Beneath his home on the Cashmere hills he built a workshop , and equipping it with the tools of the trade, he carried out repairs to the very highest standard. He restored important clocks for his provence including the Lyttleton Harbour Til11e Ball and the Ferrymead Historical Park Clock. For over thirty years he was honorary horologist to the Canterbury Museum. George Foster joined the Antiquarian Horological Society at its inception in 1953 and over the years he had a number of articles published in its journal ,Antiquarian Horology. The Gothic chamber clock, lot number 11 il1 this catalogue, was the subject for one such article. Foster's collection of Antiquarian Horology is also included in this catalogue. The horological library George Foster assembled was considered to be the biggest in this country. It forms the final section in the sale. George Foster died in 1994 after a long illness. Two of his sons have inherited something of their father's enthusiasm for horology and they quite naturally have retained some of the major items from his collection including some of his library. Not withstandil1g, the collections included il1 this catalogue are truly representative of George Foster's collecting interests and horologists local and abroad will welcome the opportunity to purchase pieces from such a comprehensive offering. George Foster's collection of watches, watch movements and horological tools will be auctioned later this year through Christie's in London.

The decorat ion is largely intact but showing considerable wear. Height 73cm 10,000-15 ,000 see illustration front and back covers 2 James McCabe. A Mahogany Bracket Clock No 1179, circa 1810 with repeating fusee movement, in later lyre shaped mahogany case with carved feet , the enamel dia l with fine ly fretted gilt brass surround engraved James McCabe Royal Exchange London. A Mahogany Cased Watchman 's Clock, 19th Century. with time registering lever, slotted back plate and pendulum bob, silvered dial , the case of plain design on a moulded pedestal base. A note about this clock to George Foster from Ernest Edwards reads in part, The idect wcts the fctcto1y or warehouse wctlcbman sbould press in one of tbe pins every bour on making bis rounds of tbe building. ... The pressed in pins left a record of bis vigilance and once pressed in the cctse wcts so secured tbat be could not obtctin ctccess. A Porcelain Mantle Clock of Rococo Design , circa 1800 signed Henri Marc a Paris 19038, the gilt embellished white porcelain case stands on the original gilt wood base also numbered 19038. With locking plate strike , bobbin with steel suspension for regulation. An extract from George Foster's notes for a lecture given around twenty years ago in the Canterbury Muse um reads , This one was mctde in tbe first decade of
tbe nineteenth century wben Metre was making bis own clocks. Tbere are many dials signed Henri Marc in New Zealand but most of tbese are stctndard movements of Frenc/1 type from manufacturers like Japy Freres ctnd olhers wbo supplied the trade. This one has ct most unusual pendulum suspension and time adjusting mechanism. Good ceramic cased clocks of tbe early periods are unfortuncttely quite rare. Tbe fact thctt the movements are friction tight in their cases means that only c111 extra tigbtening of the screws, sbould the movement slip around the case wbilst winding, will spell disaste,- to the delicate case. This clock was brougbl to New Zealctnd soon ctfter the establisbment of tbe Canterbury settlement. The Reverend William Chctrles Fectron arrived in ryttelto11 on the 'Minervct ' i11 Febructry 1861 with bis wife ctnd ten children. This important clock was the subject of an essay in Antiquarian Horology December 1967 by George Foster (photo-copies available on application). An extract from the essay reads , I suggest the clock under discussion is of English provenance but macte by an immigrant clockmaket; or locksmith as be probably was, because the clock illustrates several traits wbicb indicate a transitional piece between tbe purely Gothic iron clock and the classical brass lanteni clock. h. 25 .5cm. 20,000-25,000 see illustration page 5

Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, two arm compensated balance with wedge weights and 5-turn blued steel helica l spring. Chain fusee with Harrison maintaining power. 55mm dia. Note: Charles Smith was the nephew of Captain James Cook 2000-4000 181 Barrauds Cornhill London. No 436. A Very Rare and Important Marine Chronometer, c.1809. Housed in a triple layer mahogany box mounted on gimba ls.The dial silvered in a soft matt fmish and beautifully engraved, the seconds dial being below the centre and the hour and minute above blued steel spade hands. The chronometer is signed on the dial 'Barrauds Cornhill' and on the back plate 'Barrauds Cornhill London 436'. Dial dia. 100mm. The movement is of the Mudge design and is fitted with the rare divided resting barrel as also used by Harrison and Kendal. This consists of a spring barrel within the chain drum. The barrel is fixed whilst the arbor rotates w ith the chain drum. the fusee is left handed w ith the result that it goes backwards, hence the centre staff drives the ho ur and min ute wheel offset from the centre so that the hands can rotate clockwise. The seconds hand has an idler wheel. The escapement is on Arno ld 's pattern with epicycloidal teeth, the detent being planted in a slot in the back plate together with the locking adjusting screw. The discharge pallets appear to be of diamond and the impulse pallet ruby. The balance wheel is also an Arnold type with weights moving on a threaded section of the rims. The blued steel helical spring has 11 turns with an almost ovoid section. The movement has 14 jewels w ith the balance end stone of polished steel. The movement appears to originally have been set up to use the Mudge 'Constant Force ' escapement as the plugged mow1ting holes, for such an escapement, can be seen on the back plate.
