129 A famous and historic manuscript of unusual importance and rarity. Archdeacon Alfred Nesbitt Brown's copy of the Treaty of Waitangi. On the 1st March 1840 Lt Governor Hobso n fell ill with a severe stroke. While recuperating at the Waimate Mission Station he invoked the assistance of eight reputable residents and missionaries and furnished each with a signed duplicate copy of the Treaty of Waitangi to obtain signatures of distant chiefs in the Southern Districts and Middle Island. In all eight duplicate copies were prepared, five gentlemen of the Church Missionary Society: - Rev. Alfred N. Brown; Rev. Robert Maunsell ; Rev. Richard Taylor; Rev. Henry Williams and the Rev. William Williams received copies together with Major Thomas Bunbury , H.M. 80th Regiment; Willoughby Shortland , Acting Colonial Secretary and William C. Symonds of the British Army. This copy is the only one bearing Governor Hobson's signature at the left hand side of the document. It is also , together with the main copy of the Treaty, the only one which is signed as Consul and Lieutenant-Governor, they are also the only two copies bearing three seals of the Colonial Secretary , New Zealand. The only other copy of the Treaty bearing a seal is the English version. This copy which is 48.5 x 74 3cm is in exceptional condition and was sent to Archdeacon Brown in Tauranga, but no signatures were obtained owing to the intervention of a native war. It is mounted beneath a sheet of bevelled plate glass fully engraved in gothic style lettering: - 'Treaty of Waitangi 1840'
The main copy together with seven of the duplicate copies of the Treaty of Waitangi are displayed in the National Archives , Wellington. Ref: Captain William Hobson , First Governor of New Zealand , by C.H Scholefield

An historica l flag formerly the property of the Maori prophet Rua Tapunui Hepetipa 1869-1937. In 1905 Rua set up as a prophet of the New Testament type, at Maungapopatu in the Ureweras. He claimed to be Christ's son out of Jehova and claimed no-one who joined him would die. The settlement was administered by his own Parliament, and he built a two storied circular temple. In all he had twelve wives, and seventy
children. In 1918 his struggle for power brought the Ureweras to the brink of civil war and Sir Joseph Ward intervened to curb his influence. After serving a gaol sentence in 1915 , he advised his people to boycott military service. An armed police party was sent to arrest him on 2nd April , 1916 and two Maoris were killed. He was taken to Whakatane for trial, which lasted forty seven days , and was sentenced to one year in prison. On his release he returned to the Ureweras where he lived peacefully and died on 20th February 1937. The flag was very highly respected, a red ensign 5 ' x 9'3 " with Union Jack quarter measuring 52 " x 26 " In 8 " high attached white letters in the fly is "Rua Tupua" (Rua the flower) also in the fly is a 14" crescent together with three five pointed stars measuring 7" at their widest points.

Literature: to be published in a forthcoming production Charting the Vast Pacific , Aldus Books, London

It was probably traded to a Hawaiian by a European sailor from Tonga. David Samwell , the ship's surgeon on the ' Resolution ' describes Cook 's death after he had been stabbed ' . he endeavoured to scramble on the rock, when a fellow gave him a blow on the head with a large club and he was seen alive no more' (see The Journals of Captain James Cook edit ed by J.C.
