AUCKLAND
PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA
Dear Auction Goers Thank you for taking the first step towards entering into the spirit of the Auckland Philharmonia Gala Auction. The next step, that of bidding on and purchasing some of the wonderful merchandise available, will not only benefit you but will provide funding for your favourite cultural asset. Unfortunately, one of the facts of life is that no orchestra in the world exists on ticket sales alone. We do better than most by taking 53% of our annual income from box office, where the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra take only 29%, in line with most western orchestras. Consequently the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra requires 61 % of its income to come from Government funding, while only 25% of ours comes from that source. Fortunately, however, the Auckland Philharmonia has earned recognition as an important Auckland asset with a wide family of supporters. By attending the auction you have shown that you too care about keeping professional music alive and thriving in the upper North Island. This Auction provides a wonderful opportunity for the extended family of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra to work on a project together. Everyone, from the Players to the Guild, Friends of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the Endowment Trust, Chair and Series Sponsors, have generously participated in this event. Look through the catalogue at the merchandise and opportunities offered and you will recognise names of companies that have stood by the orchestra for years, now fully part of the family that makes up our support fabric. The proceeds from this auction will go towards a specific project, the purchase of a computer system to replace the uncoordinated dinosaur that we do battle with everyday at the office. On behalf of the players and management of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, thank you to Chris Devereaux and his Board of Advisors Subcommittee for organising this Gala event. Also thank you to Maryanne Gardiner and Judi Rann, from the Orchestra management team, who coordinated both sponsors and the merchandise and who toiled so willingly to put the nuts and bolts of this event together.
Lloyd Williams GENERAL MANAGER
