Jewett, the president of the Paige Motor Company, the Jewett was in reality a smaller Paige sold as a make on its own. It was a popular car and more than 40000 of various models were sold. This car was one of the first to be fitted with 4 wheel Lockheed hydraulic brakes. 1953 Bentley R Type Standard Steel Saloon
Chassis No: B198UM Engine No: B224U Engine: six cylinder in line, water cooled monobloc, overhead inlet valves, side exhaust valves, bore 3 5/8in, stroke 4 1/2in, capacity 4,566cc. Rolls-Royce produced the Bentley Mark VI post-war, and this model, the first built by the company to carry its own coachwork, sounded the end of Bentley as an individual marque. In 1949 the car could be purchased with either a Bentley radiator or, called the Silver Dawn, with a Rolls-Royce grille and the social status associated with that. The 4,257cc power unit that had been developed for the cars was fast and powerful and was modified constantly before the introduction of the R-type Bentley in 1952. First appearing with the engine enlarged to 4,566cc and increased soon after to 4,887cc, the cars were for a time claimed to be the world's fastest production saloon. This example is presented in concours standard, having won "best car" at several club meets. It was first owned by Dorothy Rippon of Leeds, Rippon Bros. of Leeds being the main agents and coachbuilders for Rolls and Bentley cars at that time. It was used as a limousine in London from 1970 and brought to NZ in 1973. It has been extensively restored here and improved by the addition of a full stainless steel twin exhaust system. The car has a unique coachbuilt tail-light arrangement which provides a stylish finish to the rear in contrast to the normal Lucas lamps. This work may have originated from the Rippon coachbuilders. Colour: two tone metallic maroon over silver, light blue leather trim. $35000 - 45000
12 1937 Austin lOhp Cambridge Saloon
Chassis No: GI 35589 Engine No: IG 146752 Engine: four cylinders in line, water cooled monobloc, side valve, bore 63.5mm, stroke 89mm, capacity 1,125cc. Four speed gearbox, single dry plate clutch, spiral bevel rear axle, semi-elliptic leaf spring suspension front and rear. Wheelbase 7ft lOin. Tyres 16in. Height 5ft 3in, length 12ft 2in, width 4ft 9in. Right hand drive. The Austin lOhp car made its debut in April 1932, filling a gap in the market between the well-proven 7hp and 12hp models. It borrowed the qualities of economy and reliability of its sister models, and the 1.125cc engine was to remain in production throughout the decade. By 1937 chrome radiators and wire wheels had given way to sloping enamel radiator surrounds and pressed steel easy-clean wheels. New technology saw the manufacture of elegant pressed steel coachwork. Although an economy car selling at 195 pounds, the 1937 Austin 10 had leather upholstery, a Pytchley sliding roof, rear window blind, rope pulls, pile carpets and an opening windscreen. This example has been in the possession of its present owner for fifteen years. In 1978 it was fully restored including a rebored motor which has done only 1000 miles since then. Condition overall is described as good but low gear is noisy. Upholstery is vinyl, carpets are new. Original tool kit. Colour: dark blue and black. $8000 - 11000

The name Jaguar, applied to some special models in the late 1930's, did not appear as a make proper until 1945. The early range of cars provided a high standard of elegance and quality at a modest price. In the 1950's a range of luxury touring and sporting cars was introduced, and in the late 1950's the smaller Mark II appeared. This example is a 3.8 litre version with an improved gearbox and is described as being in excellent condition throughout. The engine has done 1500 miles after being stripped and rebuilt, the brakes and suspension have been reconditioned and paint and trim are new. There is a chrome XK-type luggage rack on the boot, an E-type steering wheel, wire wheels and sidewalls. The car was imported from the UK in 1971 and the original plates are available. This final version of the astounding E Type proved extremely popular and gave a combination of high speed and roadholding hardly bettered at the time and still good by today's standards. A feature of the car which contributed to its handling were the new SP Sport Dunlop tyres, developed for the car and tested at high speed for Jaguar by Norman Denis on the restriction free Italian autostradas. At US$6,950 for the roadster, the V12 was remarkable value for money at a time when Lamborghini and Ferrari Vl2's both cost nearly double, and the cars offered classic British styling with a thoroughbred pedigree quite unmatched then or now. This fine example left the factory as a fixed head coupe, and was subsequently expertly converted to an extremely high standard by New Zealand workshops to roadster specification. It was delivered new to New Zealand in 1973 and has covered only 92,000km from then. Painted white, with a black coloured interior trim, this handsome sports car has been returned to original factory specifications and is now ready for some stimulating open top motoring in considerable style $100000-120000

Height 5ft 3in, length 10ft 6in, width 5ft 3in. The intensive competition between English manufacturers during the 1930's produced quality vehicles that were keenly priced. The Morris 12/4 is a good example. This was a popular family car in NZ in the late 1930's. It was well finished and comfortable to drive, strongly sprung for NZ roads and one of the early challengers to America's supremacy in the local market. This car was in storage for some ten years and was fully restored in 1979. It is described as being generally in very good order, the trim being in reasonable order. Colour: green and black. A low priced entry into the world of collectable cars. $7000 - 10000

After World War 2 it became a subsidiary of Austin and made bodies for its Princess line. The Vanden Plas Princess was another in a long line of small, affordable but nonetheless luxury coachbuilt cars which British manufacturers provided over the years to a specialty market. This example is described as being in virtually new condition. It was originally on the Isle of Man and was brought to NZ in January 1977. It has a radio, mudflaps, picnic tables, c.d. ignition and rustproofing. Its two owner history is documented. Colour: mallard green with lime leather and walnut trim. $5000 - 7000

It has done 45000k on its restored engine. The car was given a chassis - up rebuild in 1981 - 82 by Batheaston Vintage Motors including a short block replacement. The car was imported from the UK in 1983. Current NZ warrant of fitness. $12000 - 15000

The Jaguar name first appeared in 1936 on this handsome four-door sports saloon. The engine was made by Standard but redesigned by Weslake and Haynes. The car was good for 85-90 mph and sold for only 385 pounds. Current commentators assessed the car as "worth twice the money" and it was one of the outstanding cars at the 1936 Olympia show. The smooth running engine and passenger comfort were particularly notable. There were two open models of the SS, a two-seater competetion model and a four-seater. This car is an earlier restoration and is described as tidy throughout and all original. The engine was fully reconditioned in 1984 and runs well. The indicated mileage is 85000m. The new car had a new V8 engine and in 1962 it was provided with a higher compression ratio which enhanced the performance to provide a useful 200bhp at 4,500rpm. This car is described as being in excellent condition in all departments. It was imported new to NZ and has had five owners. Its recorded mileage is 122675 and it comes with a full tool kit. The car used mainly Jaguar mechanical parts and was an evocation of the SSlOO first introduced in 1935. The company was the creation of Robert Janke), a former car tuner turned successful textile manufacturer who retained an interest in the design and building of specials. In construction as well as style the Panther used many techniques typical of the 1930's but with fewer drawbacks and far more performance. Some 500 cars were made up until 1977 when the company was bought by Korean interests. It still makes Specials under various names. Wheelbase 8ft 4in, height 4ft 6in, length 12 ft 2in, width 4ft 6in. Right hand drive. The initials HRG stand for EA Halford, GH Robins and HR Godfrey. Their first car, produced in 1935, was intended to carry on the Frazer-Nash tradition of a vintage-style sporting machine without frills, though the car used bevel drive, not chains. In 1938 and 1939 HRGs won at Le Mans. For 1939 pump-cooled ohc Singer engines were adopted, the 1100cc using that firm's 9hp unit joining the 1.5 litre. The famous XK seri_es engine powered the early cars and the lighter bodies and streamlined headlamp farings ensured superlative handling at speed. It was a practical touring car with easy access to the luggage area through the hatchback rear. This example, car No. 311, is a flat floor fixed head coupe. It is left hand drive having been imported to NZ from California in 1%5. It is all original except for a bonnet rebuild and new chrome wire wheels.
