William George Woods 1898-1~63
A collection of drawings and paintings from the family of the late George Woods. George Woods was born 1898 in Kumara, Westland. He attended the old Wellington Art School and after visiting America and the Pacific in his twenties, he freelanced for a time as a commercial artist in Australia and New Zealand and later worked for both Charles Haines and Ilotts advertising agencies. Towards the end of his life, he devoted himself entirely to producing prints and drawings for his own enjoyment, snpplimenting his income with occasional work for the school journals produced by the Departme nt of Education. A New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts retrospective exhibition catalogue of George Woods work in 1966 states in its introduction text that 'he cared not at all what people thought of his work, and in his later years emphasised his disregard by seldon exhibiting. For this reason his work is comparatively unknown to the younger generation of artists'. 734

New Zealand Colonial Furniture
7(x}
An important and outstanding
early Colonial fall-front bureau attributed to Johann Martin Levien in rare New Zealand timbers including totara knot, honey suckle, mottled kauri, fuschia etc. The writing section with its interesting carved handle opens to reveal eight drawers which have fuschia wood fronts and pigeon holes. Below there are two long drawers, six short drawers and a large cupboard. the design is simple and dignified and is to be expected for the reason that Levien served his apprenticeship in Europe at the height of the Biedermeier style and because the taste of the young colony would have a preference for simplicity. The decorative effects are achieved with the use of veneers. Levien commenced business in New Zealand in Wellington in 1840 after arriving on a ship from Rio de Janeiro. He was almost immediately successful and in 1843, a local report states 'Mr Levien .... has been industriously employed in proving the value of our forests by working native woods in all description of furniture. His work is beautifully executed and his prices moderate'. Later, in England he would make much grander pieces for Queen Victoria, the King of Russia (a huge totara sideboard) and other noble families. Michael Levien, great grandson of Johann Levien and the authority on the artist writes in a letter to the present owner in August of 1990 that this bureau is probably by Johann Levien. 'My hunch is that he .... made it' he states. That Levien made many pieces of furniture during his brief four year sojourn in Wellington is certain. that no piece made in New Zealand has been discovered so far is surprising and leads us to be cautious in making any attribution to him. However, when the provenance of this bureau is considered together with the opinion of Michael Levien, and
chapter four of S NorthcoteBade's Book, Colonial furniture in New Zealand with regard to Levien, it is reasonable to make the Levien attribution for this fine bureau. Provenance: Acquired by the present owner at a sale in Christchurch conducted by McCrosties & Co on behalf of the Willis estate. By descent to Claude Willis from Dr James Irving a leading citizen of early Canterbury who presented an alter to the new Christchurch cathedral as well as directing the planting of its grounds. Dr Irving is recorded as having owned many fine pieces of furniture. Documents of provenance etc are available for inspection by interested persons. estimate on request illustrated

762 A work and games table by James Ann ear. Wellington 1848. This work and games table is in totara entirely veneered in burrs with a chess top in rewarewa and decorative parquetry in maire. Hames Annear emmigrated to Port Nicholson in 1841 and set up business as a furniture manufacturer in Sydney Street, Wellington. With Johann Levien, he is credited with being one of the very first cabinetmakers to utilize New Zealand native woods in decorative cabinet making. It appears that he left New Zealand 1853. This work bears the maker's label on the interior. The rectangular work box is supported by a hexagonal column on a platform base with four bun feet and castors. The interior is fitted with two sliding partitioned trays revealing four drawers and surrounded by six lidded compartments. An identical but slightly taller table was sold at Webb's sale no. 134 of April this year (lot 140) which was purchased for $29,700 including buyers premium by the National Museum of New Zealand. The publicity attached lo that sale brought this piece forward. H. 915 W. 69.5 D. 49 15000-25000
