John Weeks
The following twelve pastel drawings were all rescued from the fire at the old Elam School of Art in Symonds Street in 1949 by the present owner who was then a student. The fire destroyed a large body of Week's very best works which he was preparing for a major exhibition

These pastels which were blowing, still smouldering, across the grounds of the Art School were shown afterwards to Weeks who declared that he was too distressed to see them again and that the rescuer should keep them. Although damaged, these twelve drawings are examples of the artist's very best work in the medium and with their fire damaged edges they are a memorial to perhaps the most tragic event in the artist's life.
