51 Frances Hodgkins 1869-1947

'Pottery and vases of many kinds had long been a favourite motif of Hodgkins, particularly over the period 1928-33. The possible symbolic connotations of these objects as sign ifiers of abundance and of the feminine, operate alongside a context for this interest in other artists' practice; classically shaped pitchers and amphorae were a stock motif for the New Classicists.' Frances Hodgkins, Buchanan, Dunn, Eastmond. p.82. $35,000-45,000 see illustration page 13

Amphora watercolour and pencil signed lower right 410 x 560mm Exhibited: Alex. Reid & Lefevre Ltd. The Lefevre Galleries, London, 4th-27th April, 1940. Gouaches and Pencil Drawings by Frances Hodgkins. No.30. Purchased by Hugh Walpole. Leicester Galleries, London, April 1945. Works from the Collection of the late Sir Hugh Walpole. No.124. Purchased by 0. Cameron, Esq.

52 Frances Hodgkins

The Yellow House watercolour c.1924 signed 530 x 450mm Exhibited: Heffner Gallery, Cambridge 1948, cat.no.31. The Yellow House was painted in France and the similarity with The Yellow Houseboat , Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, gives a possible date of 1924, when the artist spent the summer at Montreuil-Sur-Mer. $18,000-28,000 see illustration page 13

In the May 25th , 1940, edition of the New Statesman, Hugh Walpole reviewed the British Collection for the Venice Biennale. The paintings were selected by the British Council who chose five painters to represent British Art: Duncan Grant, Frances Hodgkins, Glyn Philpot, Edward Wadsworth and Alfred Munnings. The exhibition travelled as far as Paris where it was turned back by the worsening war in Europe and was eventually shown at Hertford House, London - the home of the Wallace Collection. "I have not always liked the paintings of Frances Hodgkins. My discovery of her is quite recent. I had long thought her a rather ordinary painter with a charming sense of colour. Then, some two years ago, I saw a gouache by her in a general exhibition somewhere, and I could not get it out of my head, a bird, a flow of pale green water and a silver streak of sunlight in that picture. Then a month or so ago, I visited an exhibition of her gouaches at the Lefevre Galleries. I returned to that exhibition again and again. I thought that these were lovely pictures ... And I do like Miss Hodgkin's (as opposed to Munnings) because not only does she seem to me true to life, but she enriches my experience of it."

53 Sydney Lough Thompson 1877-1973 The Roadman's Team, Kaikoura oil on board inscribed on framer's old label, verso 500 x 600mm $18,000-26,000 see illustration page 23 54 Sydney Lough Thompson

Cart Horse, South of France oil on canvas signed 360 x 440mm $18,000-26,000 see illustration page 23

This work Amphora has greatest similarities to a prolific group of works arising out of the artist's visit to Ibiza in the Balearic Islands from October 1932 to Ju ly 1933. She wrote · ..... in this clear ivory light every common object looks important and significant ... things appear in stark simplicity minus all detail, nothing corked up ... or hidden as in the grey or brown light of the North.'

A Street Scene in an Arab Village, Tunisia oil on canvas board, c.1920 signed 530 X 440mm $8000-12,000 see illustration page 32

Phoenician Pottery and Gourds (Auckland City Art Gallery), Pottery and Gourds, Ibiza, Fish and Shells and Spanish Pottery where the same pottery is used, all belong to this period.

T.V. about the life of Jean Batten, in which there are shots of her wearing the brooch. iv. Four contemporary studio portrait photographs of Jean Batten by Cecil Story and Lenare. v. An invitation to Miss Batten's relative to attend the ehibition opening of 'Wings Across the World' Exhibition at Auckland International Airport in 1990 vi. Gemologist's report. Note: The Herald article dated Oct 17, 1990 states that the brooch was given to Jean Batten by Wakefield after the New Zealand flight in Oct 1936. The earliest photograph of Miss Batten wearing this brooch appears in a clipping dated Feb 1936 which pre-dates the flight to New Zealand (see next lot). It is probable therefore that Wakefield presented the brooch to Miss Batten after her first flight in the Percival Gull in November 1935 current estimate on request see illustration front cover
