Prints from the Collection of the late Martin Roosma of Tasmania, Australia. Martin Roosma studied etching in Paris where he was friends with Picasso and other famous artists. Later he held the post of Curator of Prints at the Tatto Museum in Estonia, his birthplace. He has related that during the Second World War he was conscripted into service with the German Secret Service where his expertise was utilized to restore war damaged works of art. Rossma also related that he worked on engraved forgeries of English pound notes which the S.S. proposed to use to destabilize the British economy. During his life he amassed a large collection of works of art, some of which he bequeathed to the Tatto Museum in Estonia. He died in Hobart in 1991 aged 83 and the following prints comprised part of his Estate.

William Hogarth holds a unique position in English art. He overcame the domination of taste in England by Continental artists, succeeding to the extent that he was commissioned to paint the Royal Family in 1731. The most famous of his 'Morality' paintings caused a great demand for the engravings he produced after them, and through the next fifty years innumerable editions were published and sold. The best known of these are 'Harlot's Progress', 'The Rake's Progress' and 'Marriage a-la-mode'. The following engravings are from Hogarth's plates re-worked for republishing in 1822. For convenience the sizes given are of the sheets and not the plates. 307 William Hogarth 1697-1764 Self Portrait at an Easel engraving 1764, 410 x 355 300-500 308 William Hogarth Shrimps, engraved by F. It has been noted that a number of Seuffert's inlaid wine tables have supports not made by his workshop, for example the tops that were sent to England as presentations usually had tripod bases of English woods. Some of the Seuffert tables in New Zealand have bases that do not fit well with their inlaid tops. A probable explanation is offered by the following lot, a wine table by Albert Dachenhausen. This table, which can be accurately attributed, has a base almost identical to that of the Seuffert table. As Albert Dachenhausen had his workshop established in Auckland by 1896, when he won First Prize for his furniture at the Auckland Exhibition, he may have provided Seuffert with bases for his tables. He may even have worked in the Seuffert workshop at an earlier date.

There can be little doubt, however, that the bases in these two tables have a common source of origin estimate on request illustrated

521 Colin McCahon Helensville Series No 5 watercolour signed, inscribed and dated 1971 1030 X 680 20,000-22,000 illustrated
522 Colin McCahon Untitled oil on board unsigned 700 X 860 This painting from the Estate of the late Tom Maude of Otago formed the back support for the canvas North Canterbury Landscape and was separated from it in order that the latter could be entered into Webb's sale of July 15th 1987. (lot 60). The outstanding price of $160,000 was achieved for North Canterbury Landscape in that sale. One can assume that this interesting experimental painting was never completed to the satisfaction of the artist but on examination of
his major triptych On Building Bridges in the Auckland City Art Gallery will demonstrate that this painting is a preliminary and experimental work towards that great triptych. As this painting was used as a backing to the North Canterbury canvas, it must pre-date it by perhaps a year 15,000-25,000 illustrated
523 Colin McCahon French Bay. 1955 oil on hardboard signed and dated in brushpoint lower left: McCahon, July 55. This painting belongs loosely to a large group of paintings done at a time when McCahon was beginning to paint in "series" (i.e. "Towards Auckland" 1953-4) as well as "Themes" which appear in a less consistent way. Thus, houses among kauri trees appear and reappear in McCahon's paintings from 1953 to 1959. Most, like this painting, are derived from the artist's own or neighbouring houses, set among the kauri trees in the Titirangi hills overlooking French Bay. This particular work should not be confused with the several series of 1956 and 1957 titled "French Bay" 505 X 760 Provenance: Estate of Ena Scholes 60,000-80,000 illustrated 524 Colin McCahon Drawing for chapel window to be carried out in coloured and sandblasted glass signed and dated 1970 454 X 580 500-800
