On ceremonial occasions a chief of paramount influence used a tokipoutangata to emphasize some important point in his oration; it was also laid on the body of a deceased rangitira as he lay before his mourning kinfolk. The adze was a symbol of great mana and its name and history would be well known to the whole tribe. Literature and illustrations: The Decorative Alts of the New Zealand Maori, Dr. T. The kauri top inlaid with a profusion of native timbers in parquetry in typical Seuffert style and having in its centre within circle, the insignia of the 65th Yorkshire North Riding Regiment of Foot (The Royal Tigers) The 65th Yorkshire Regiment - or 'The Rickety Pips' as their Maori opponents referred to them, were commanded from 1845 by Lt. Colonel Alfred Wyatt C.B. For almost nineteen years they campaigned in strenuous battles throughout Taranaki and the central North Island. On the back of the table top the name 'Wyatt' is written in pencil in Seuffert's hand. This table was quite possibly commissioned from Seuffert by the officers in his command to present to him on his departure from New Zealand. The table was recently repatriated from England where it was found in an antique market by its present owner. The quadrapod pedestal base was possibly added in England. dia. 58 cm 9000-12,000 illustrated

These two landscapes are directly related to the large eight-canvas "Landscape Theme and Variations : series B". At the time McCahon was contemplating a "series C" (which could account for "F' and "G" being inscribed on these two works), while at the same time producing several "try-outs", both lots of which he referred to as "spares". This probably accounts for the fact that these two works and others like them were never truely christened with a final "title", nor signed. McCahon, however, did refer generally to these works as "Landscapes" (in line with the "Landscape Theme and Variations" title) or occasionally as "Northland

263 Colin McCahon French Bay. 1955 oil on hardboard signed and dated in brushpoint lower left: McCahon, July 55 This painting belongs loosely to a large group of paintings done at a time when McCahon was beginning to paint in "series" (i.e. "Towards Auckland" 1953-4) as well as "Themes" which appear in a less consistent way. Thus, houses among kauri trees appear and reappear in McCahon's paintings from 1953 to 1959. Most, like this painting, are derived from the artist's own or neighbouring houses, set among the kauri trees in the Titirangi hills overlooking French Bay. This particular "panel" is among the more colourful of this series, with a Muriwai-Helensville landscape being more pronounced. The title is taken from a popular song in which the repeated line is heard 'I never promised you a rosegarden'. The hanging form of the "rosegarden" is linked with a string of rosary beads.
