Modern & Contemporary Art
HIGHLIGHTS April 2nd - 2007 Paintings find their way to the auction market over many convoluted pathways. Sometimes their journey is incredibly straightforward, other times not so. When a journey has been long and perhaps arduous, the tracking of this journey can add value to a particular piece. The provenance of a painting is the artistic equivalent of genealogy. Often the painting's 'family' history succeeds not only in enriching it but also affecting its monetary value. Exhibition histories, publication details and ownership logs, can help the auction house and gallery chart history, and in the case of unsigned works they can eliminate any doubts about authenticity. If the vendor has purchased the work directly from the living artist, original gallery exhibition, or, in the case of several works in the April

sale, if works have been gifted or bartered for, the provenance becomes a valuable pool of information that is forever attached to the painting. This catalogue includes two major works by Colin McCahon, an important Tony Fomison oil and a Gordon Walters Koru, all of which are the most important examples to have come to the market in recent years. Three of these paintings have been little seen and Pacific

The McCahon works are two very different though equally beautiful examples. Noughts and Crosses VII (lot 36) has been held in the custodial care of its owner for over

to see a work of this level of importance and beauty come onto the market. Moving in the circle of McCahon in the mid seventies gave the vendor a unique insight into the man and his studio. This is the last work in the second series of seven, and the more study one makes of the painting the more it reveals. The title of course introduces the subject matter, but careful viewing reveals deeper meaning. This is no ordered childish game, there is riotous joy in his noughts, bitter yellows offset with swirled purple, outlined heavily in black, circling holes into a distance we can only imagine. There is somber placing of the crosses which resemble crucifixes or grave markers. These stagger into the near distance, far removed

The Handing-On (lot 31) by Tony Fomison has also been with its owner since 1976, and their close family tie to Denis Cohn's gallery gave them a unique insight into the workings of early art buying. Fom ison is important not only because of his masterful command of

his medium and his sensitive handling of chiaroscuro, but because he was the forerunner of a number of artists who helped re-write and re-define this country's ability to reflect
int its unique South Pacific identity. Fomison's work is separated by its intensely personal

with an element of unease. Both faces have their eyes closed, perhaps to exemplify inner contemplation of the complex relationship Fomison is attempting to illustrate, a personal vision of human events. Much of the true nature of his larger figu rative compositions concerns a metaphysical journey, in this case the 'handing-on' of experience, from one generation to the next. Gordon Walters Untitled 1972 (lot 39) is a superb example of the restraint, control and clarity inherent in his Koru paintings. Based on a deceptively simple band and circle, the Koru works reveal themselves in seemingly endless variations. Untitled 1972 is cream and pale blue, the movement generated by its composition soft and undulating. The Koru forms terminate in a series of softly repeating, centrally arranged diagonals. The eye is constantly pulled back and around in loops, obsessively seeking out the pattern. This work was part of the Auckland Art Gallery exhibition Gordon Walters in 1983 and is in pristine condition. An opportunity has come to pass where Webb's is seeking new custodial owners for these four iconic paintings, people who will take over the care of these epic works into the future. Two very large enamel on hardboard compositions by Pat Hanly are vibrant and joyous, despite much of the work from this period being extremely politically motivated. Issues of a Nuclear free Pacific, and the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior are brought to mind by these paintings. Hope Vessel Attacked (lot 41) is one of at least sixteen paintings exploring

yachts or as Pat called them 'hope vessels' or 'arks'. Pacific Fire (lot 51) is free form, organic, bright and chaotic, much like its subject. Girl on a Couch 1973 (lot 37) is a powerful punch of a painting. The cartoon -esque outline of the woman, is a facsimile of womanhood, barely picked out of the background, with little concern for differentiation of tonal modulation. She is at once the background and the foreground, lying on the surface of the work as well as 'on the couch'. The Pollock inspired splatter adorning the lower right corner, the red couch, the naked woman, all point to an explosion of fertility and sexual exuberance.

The Blythe COLLECTION Lot numbers for the Blythe Collect1on are printed in blue.
The Blythe Collection held its first meeting on the 14th of December 1987. Eight couples attended eight meetings a year, each couple being challenged to come up with a meeting focus that was different and educative. In addition to this learning, the members resolved from the outset that the purpose of the collection would include investment and the opportunity to have works in their homes they might not otherwise experience.
A
They sought information and advice from all corners of the art world. At meetings talks were given by artists, conservationists, critics, and curators. The group visited artists' studios, exhibitions and foundries and talked to people who made and marketed art. They began collecting what they light-heartedly termed "Punts and Patriarchs" - newcomers and established artists. Over the years they tightened their collecting policy, focusing on New Zealand painters after World War II. More recently, they rationalised the collection to reflect a new rigorously debated policy: to purchase the best works by identified artists that the group could afford. All of this served to strengthen and enrich not only the collection as a whole but also the bonds of friendship within the group. Their first purchase was a Louise Henderson (lot 100) and their last a Milan Mrkusich (lot 44). The Henderson is a vibrant still life, and although she went on to become a proponent of abstract expressionism, her use of this genre was easily identifiable and

The strength of this collection lies not only in the calibre of its content but also in its members. What began as an investment answer to the stock market fluctuations of the 1980s quickly developed into something far more fulfilling and enriching than they had ever envisaged. Blythe Collection members have voted on several occasions to extend the life of the group, and even though the decision has now been taken after nearly 20 years to formally disband and sell the collection, the members are committed to maintaining the friendships that have blossomed over the years, and to growing and developing their personal collections.

DOZE GREEN April 13th - 20th 2007
Webb's is pleased to announce the opening of The Left Hand Path, a solo exhibition of new and recent works by celebrated New York artist and pioneer of Hip-Hop culture, Doze Green. A graffiti artist, who learnt his craft on the streets of Manhattan in the 1970\ his work has shifted from the bombing of subway stations, trains and alley walls, to creating pieces for galleries and accepting commissions throughout the world. The Left Hand Path has its premise in the basic questions about the directions one
takes in life. If given a choice, which path would you choose7 Doze Green's intensely orchestrated figures populate scenes of infinite possibility and ever changing narrative. His works move effortlessly between graffiti and calligraphy, between low and high art and forever blur the boundaries between them. Large scale works are filled with what Green calls "creatively chaotic and intuitive brushstrokes" telling stories from the street. He is a fusionist, employing 'street' symbols, Cubist influences, figuration and expressionism. These genres combine in his work to tell little heard stories of the urban oppressed. Doze Green will be in New Zealand for two weeks, thanks to Red Bull, during which time he will prepare new works and take part in a live painting performance at The Turnaround on Friday March 30th, The Bacco Room, 53 Nelson Street, Auckland. As a founding member of the 1970's breakdancing troupe the Rock Steady Crew, performing live in front of an audience is not unusual, rather it is an extension of the joy he finds expressing himself in front of others. A painter now, not a dancer, his works are executed 'freeform' "... no preconceived prepping ... just a man, an audience and his canvas alongside his music." Doze Green's work The Left Hand Path will be on view at Webb's from 14th - 20th April.

Trad itiona I Representationa I & FOREIGN ART MAY 15th 2007 - ENTRIES NOW INVITED Whereas the fine art section of this catalogue groups Modern and Contemporary works, the Traditional and Representative sale is to be a distilled offering of historical, topographical and representational works. The selection is to be based, not on date of creation, but rather on the artist's handling and approach. The sale promises a celebration of traditional and representative art movements. Our rich history of landscape painting will be illustrated, from topographical depictions of our earliest beginnings through to more contemporary treatments of our land, sea and sky. In 19 th century New Zealand, immigrants attempted to illustrate their daily life and surroundings to the folks back home, and artists travelled the country, recording its majestic scenery and endless variations of flora and fauna. Now our interest in these works is coupled with awe at how times and places have changed; how empty landscapes are now heavily populated, built up areas and harbour views are forever altered by reclamation and bridge building. Many of our historical works hark back to a slower gentler time. John Barr Clarke Hoyte was renowned for what John Gully called his "masterful and truthful" views of colonial New Zealand. While we now know he manipulated both scenes and situations to suit his artistic vision, his works are undeniably accomplished and invariably beautiful. A highlight of the sale is one of the last remaining museum quality works by A. Lois White in private hands. A biblical subject, Eve Tempted(A) sits naked and innocent, entwined with a serpent, the harsh and sharp rocky landscape contrasting forebodingly with her soft fiesh. Both she and the serpent are mesmerised by the apple she holds in her hand. Many works produced from the 50s to the present defy a singular strict categorisation as contemporary or traditional, and as such both categories of sale will include works which defy classification in this sense. The works by Graham Sydney (lot 24) and Stanley Palmer (lot 19) in this catalogue, for instance, sit soundly within New Zealand's landscape tradition but equally have been executed as part of contemporary art practice. The sale will also feature works with international origin from all periods including an etching by Goya, Los Proverbios- Disparates Plate 3 Disparate Ridiculo (C) This was the artist's final series of prints created between 1815 and 1824. graveyard markers and war memorials achieve a fine balance between romance and something more sinister. The very nature of photography, in that it stops everything for a time, allows us to indulge at our pleasure in a sustained viewing. As with most art, the more time we devote to looking the more we see, the more questions are raised, and sometimes answered. Di Ffrench's works are complex arrangements of drawing, collage and photography, layered and re-photographed. Interested in the inherent 'male' focus of classical 'academic' art history, Ffrench utitilises familiar classical references and manipulates them. Her technique enabled her to depict layered time sequences; literally overlaying modern theory onto old ideas. Whereas painted portraiture and its commission have sadly fallen out of fashion in this country, documentary photography of and by our artists has been rekindled. Contemporary photography by artists such as Gavin Hipkins and Yvonne Todd, use varied props to denote characte[ In the absence of people they convey the gravity of personal ity; empty clothing, hats, and environments which tell much about the absent sitter. There are those who believe it is marginalisation to separate photography from our other major sale categories. On the contrary, it allows for stronger connections to be made between those artists working in the medium of photography, and enables a concentrated view of our past and our present; to "draw on the human store of easeful identification." Webb's is pleased to be also presenting the complete Peter Peryer portfolios Gone Home and Mars Hotel, aso included are the complete Brian Brake portfolio Monsoon Series, featuring Monsoon Girl, and iconic images from this region and period.

Maori and Pacific Art and Artefacts, New Zealand Pottery and Furniture.
;---_
A sale celebrating the history, arts and culture of New Zealand and the Pacific Region - May 17th 2007 In response to ever growing interest in New Zealand cultural icons and taonga, a sale celebrating our creative history will be held on May 17th 2007. The offering will cover pre-contact, contact, Folk Art and contemporary Maori art, tools, weapons and artefacts. New Zealand inlaid furniture and boxes are sought for this sale along with ceramics produced by our most celebrated potters. Several finely woven Maori cloaks have been consigned for the sale, the most significant of which is a 19th century Kahu Kiwi, Kiwi and Muka woven feather cloak from the collection of the late Lewis Taylor (D). Taylor was himself a skilled master carver and a decorated New Zealand aviator. The muka kaupapa (entire surface) is woven using double pair twining (whatu aho rua) with a kiwi feather border on all sides. Of four cloaks consigned to date, an early 20th century child's 1al
nd
mixed feather cloak (C) stands in contrast to the early examples with its highly coloured non-native feathers and contemporary design. Another fine early entry to the sale is a Maori carved Kumete (box) (E), from the estate of the late Reverend John Kinder (1819-1903). This finely carved wooden container dates from around the late nineteenth century. It is carved on all faces and supported by two standing figures. The whakarare pattern using haehae lines and pakate is applied over its genera l surface to create a complex and measured appearance. This kumete reputedly held tattooing tools, and the minor characteristic corrosion staining visible within the interior is evidence of this. A full scale Maori carved door frame and lintel dating from the mid 20th century (A) is a rare and highly impressive piece. Also of note is a Folk Art carved model Meeting House (B) in the traditional red /ochre paint finish. Also included in the sale are New Zealand ceramics by Len E)
Castle, Chester Nealie, Ian Firth, a Crown Lynn Wharetana Ware Wahine plate together with Royal Doulton pieces decorated with the kowhaiwhai pattern.
Entries are now sought for this specialist sale.

December 2007 Art Sale Summary
of pr of
The results of the December sale confirm the focus buyers have towards distinct areas of collecting; contemporary art, photography and sculpture. Interest in these quarters continue to swell as younger buyers enter the market and attitudes towards what constitutes fine art shifts. with increased interest in mediums such as photography and sculpture. In November Webb's set a record price for the work of Peter Robinson when Boy Am I Scarred Eh achieved $54,000 against estimates of $25,000 - $35,000. In December interest ((
in Robinson's work was confirmed when Intra in the City 94: Intra Venus (D) sold beyond the

address the theme of cultural identity, or rather the polemics that underlie it. John Pule's
til
celebrated large format works also discuss issues of cultural identity and I Am Still Doubtful Whether To Go Or Not (C) represented good buying when it achieved $40,000. The market for contemporary photography was demonstrated to be strong when the small selection of photographs sold at or above estimates. A Michael Parekowha i work Arcturus achieved $2,800 against estimates of $1500 - $2500. Peter Peryer's Trout (B) generated strong interest and sold for a record hammer price for the artist's work at auction when it achieved $8,750. Webb's is holding a specialist photography sale on May 31 " for

selection of three-dimensional works offered in December sold very well. Our burgeoning interest in sculpture is reflected in the establishment of several new sculpture parks and trails in the Auckland area. The newly opened Brick Bay Sculpture Park, and Terry Stringer's established Zealandia are treats for all who make the short journey North of Auckland.

Tony Fomison 31
Tony Fomison The Handing-On oil on hessian board on hardboard title inscribed, signed and dated 1976 760 x 1200mm Provenance: Private Collection, Wellington Exhibited: Tony Fomison A Survey of His Painting and Drawing, 1961 - 1979 Fomison: What Shall We tell Them, City Gallery Wellington 1994 $120,000 - $160,000
The Handing-On was originally shown in an exhibition entitled Tonv Fomison: A Survey of his Paintings and Drawings From 1961 - 1979. Organised by the Dowse Art Museum in 1979, the exhibition toured the country. The catalogue includes an introduction written by Fomison, a full list of works included in the show. and a colloquial essay about Fomison's artistic life. Not much is said of the paintings, focusing heavily instead on the history rather than the 'art'. In most cases it allows the works to speak for themselves, a now unheard of convention in which so much of what we see has to be explained ad nauseum. The trick to Fomison of course is that the paintings need to be felt. It was his work amongst the Maori rock drawings and archaeological digs with Dr Roger Duff, which sparked Fomison's interest in the styles of depiction by other cultures. Living in Ponsonby in the mid to late seventies, Fomison was fully emerged in the Polynesian community. His images at the same time were 'beginning to create their own culture'. The Handing-On evokes relationships with extended families both literal and figurative. Ancestors in the physical and spirit world look after and protect their offspring while attempting to create environments where ideas, secrets and advice can be handed on. While Fomison was primarily concerned with the central figure, the use of empty landscapes heighten emotional tension. Undefined, they give us no clue as to whether this place exists. Boundaries are further blurred between what is real and what is metaphysical. Yet despite the inherent unease a sunrise lightens the horizon in the centre of the picture. The small portrait head is displayed in the hand for our inspection. The character filled face; large nose, hanging jowls and heavy lids closes it eyes, in grief, in denial, in contemplation of love, we have little clue. The more we look, the more we see, and the more questions asked remain unanswered. It is undeniably, a mysterious and powerful image.

Toss Woollaston 32 Toss Woollaston Tasman Bay oil on canvas signed and dated '86; original Vavasour Godkin Gallery label affixed verso 900 x 1200mm $ 55,000 - $75,000
Tasman Bay belongs to a late series of large landscapes painted when Woollaston was in his seventies. Fortunately his health remained good and his eyes and hands as capable as ever for the task of painting. In fact, this work has the energy and freshness of youth. Indeed Woollaston painted more forcefully in his old age than in his earlier years and with no trace of boredom with subject matter that had been familiar to him for much of his adult life. In the previous decade, in 1975-76, he had painted a large horizontal work of this same subject called Tasman Bay 1928, explaining in a letter to Luit Bieringa 'that I tried to paint my feelings about the Nelson landscape in that year when I first came here'. By 1984 his acquaintance with the subject matter of Tasman Bay extended back over 55 years and all that knowledge is implied in this canvas which draws on sketches made on the spot in watercolour and on memories and associations from the past that he fused together when he painted the final work in his studio. Of course this is not a topographical painting, even though the hill forms have identifiable profiles to those who know the area. It is more concerned with the act of painting and the substance of paint on the canvas. He conceived the work boldly with broad brushstrokes and pigment thick enough to have a tactile quality as it was brushed into and over the surface of the canvas. There is layering of colours one on another in the manner of abstract expressionism and a feeling that, despite his planning of the work in advance, its final resolution and form is achieved only in the process of painting. For Woollaston every painting involved an element of risk, an exploration with no certainty as to the final outcome. There is no place here for anything small or descriptive, everything is large and expansive. In this case the colour is striking and fully saturated, somewhat unusual for Woollaston. It is a blue painting built on related but different tints ranging from a light greenish-blue sky to the deep ultramarine blue accents of the sea. Here colour takes on an almost physical presence. The sea is tilted towards the picture plane so that its mass and extent are exaggerated and become in every way the centre of his painting. This is no scenic view of Tasman Bay but a meditation on the relationship between landscape and painting based on a lifetime of experience.

Hammond 33
Bill Hammond Soundtrack oil on four canvas panels title inscribed, signed and dated 1993 1200 x 800mm Provenance: From the Blythe Collection $70,000 - $ 90,000
Sound in paintings never really meant that much to me until I realised that what I'd mistaken for an extension of the feathers on a hat in Rembrandt's grandiloquent painting The Night Watch, was in fact the muzzle-flash and plume of smoke discharged from a large musket Suddenly, this already strange and festive painting was filled with a deafening roar as a musketeer fires above the heads of the posturing crowd. More recently I read Peter Greenaway describing the general noisy clamour along with barking dogs, a drum roll, the clattering of 13 pikestaffs, and the gunshot, as "the sound-track of the painting". Numerous Bill Hammond paintings have also been filled with sound; with the screeching of amplified guitars as their wailing frequency finds resonance with the spiky vertebrae of Southern mountain ranges; with the hiss and machinic tattoo of snare drum and cymbals translating as staccato graphic code; with the chittering clatter of intricately decorated heads as they bite, smoke and drink their way through mealtimes; with the mournful calls of vanished birdsong in the Waiting for Buller paintings. Some of Hammond's bird spirits hang around in bars shooting pool and talking of revenge - "Those airheads could squawk," goes a line from Mary-Jane Duffy's poem Waiting for Buller (After Bill Hammond} - others hang out in trees and dangle elegantly from branches with musical notation scripted across their iridescent plumage. This painting, Soundtrack from 1993, is like a rehearsed improvisation of carefully scripted cacophony; a paranoid map of transmitters and receivers; a nightmare orchestra permanently warming up. Three patches of space-piercing sound vibrate from a small cymbal hit by a tiny silver hammer; a chorus line of Scream masks maintains the upper register; a swaying basilisk croons hideously from a shrivelled, vertical rictus mouth; a blockheaded lounge leaner prepares to intimidate his audience with clipped and raspy threats; a knotched and grooved geometricised head releases a tectonic stave of sound that rises like a concrete tree, a carved and slotted speech bubble, which disperses into serried hatching in the stained yellow air; a hollow tree stump filled with cutlery, a silent sugar shaker of metallic clatter, awaits a thumping from a large rockhound's hammer; small rays of sound shocks rise from cymbals tapped by hammer si lhouettes and more loud splinters jump out from the bass drum; a horned and masked guitarist stretches back his neck, wailing for his demon lover; as a nonchalant, smoking surrealist horse head releases a tablet of sonic data and a pennant of like enc ryption. It's a high-level, multi-track painting that demonstrates Hammond's manic planiverse style of complex and nervously ornamented instrumentation.

Milan Mrkusich Staccato Ostinato oil on jute canvas signed and dated '66, title inscribed signed and dated 1966 verso 1220 x 860mm $ 55 ,000 - $75,000
By 1966, with almost twenty years of painting experience and history behind him, Milan Mrkusich was secure in his career as an artist, having built up a strong individual aesthetic identity over that time. This was recognised through his inclusion in an international exhibition that toured London. Brussels, Paris and Geneva. His was a constantly changing and evolving art. with the most recent development and emphasis seen in his use of the abstract geometric forms of the circle and square, evident in the Emblem and Element paintings produced from 1962 onward. With Staccato Ostinato there is the additional interest of a proliferation of vibrantly coloured dot forms punctuating the surface of the painting, interrupting the clearly defined, and by 1966, iconic squared circle or 'Mandela' structure beneath. This disruptive yet determinedly regularised pattern of small, circular dots, covers and extends slightly beyond the Mandela, appearing to the eye like some sort of quasi mathematical system, like that used in the early computer punch card language,
FORTRAN. The ground structure of the Mandela - in this instance a modulated earthy sienna hued circle on a darker less-modulated square bordered at the base and top with differently-toned grey bands - has the kind of suffused and modulated centre that encourages the eye to travel into its soft depths. Yet. the persistent interruptive effect of the staccato dots denies this process. In musical terms, Staccato is understood as the detached sound indicated on the musical score by a dot under or over a particular note. Similarly, Ostinato, in musical terms, is the repeated pattern that frequently appears in a base line of a musical score, one that is, importantly for the parallel to painting, at a constant and sustained pitch. The persistent, almost rhythmic, interruptive effect of the dot forms in Staccato
Ostinato, appears to be twofold. First, the very particular colours used - the vibrant oranges and reds and a range of their complementary blues - further enliven the painted surface as the eye jumps from one to the other, each vying for ocular attention. The second, related effect is that the dots persistently hold the eye at that constant pitch, discouraging it from entering into the swirling depths offered by its modulated circle structure. This sets up a persistent rhythm or movement of the eye across the surface plane of the painting: that is, a visual Staccato Ostinato. Chrissie Craig

Pat Hanly Girl on a Couch enamel on board signed and dated ·73; title inscribed and dated verso; inscribed Energy Series verso Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist by Rodney Kirk Smith and gifted to the present owner 900 x 900mm
$ 95,000 - $125,000
Girl on a Couch is one of a number of paintings with this title that Hanly painted in the early 1970s in his studio at Windmill Road in Mt Eden. He showed several of them in his Allsorts exhibition in 1974. Although the girl appears to have been drawn from a model her face is deliberately left blank and she stands for the generic idea of an attractive young woman rather than for an individual. Her blank face is one of the key aspects of the work refuting our gaze rather than returning it and forcing us to engage with the other dimensions of the work. The painting carries the sub-title Energy series which is important for explaining its central theme, for it is less about actual physical appearances than the underlying molecular forces and their energy that are the basis of life. Painted on a hard-board support in oil and enamel, Girl on a Couch has passages of splattered and dribbled paint rather like a Jackson Pollock, most notably in the lower right corner. The same technique with more controlled and muted colour occurs in the blue-green background and in the nude figure itself. The use of an action painting technique helps to give the idea of energy to the work by painterly means. Another prominent feature is the heavy white outline around the nude figure on the couch. The outline acts to identify the boundaries of the figure by aid of what Hanly has called an aura - an emanation from the girl and sourced from the energy within all living things. Her nudity and semi-reclining pose add a sensual dimension to the image that implies pro-creation. Other figures in the series actually show embracing figures engaged in love making. The colour of the painting is bright and vibrant contributing a decorative flavour to the work, and the flat area of brushed red of the couch recalls the hedonistic images Matisse painted in Nice with reclining odalisque figures on settees. Other related paintings show gardens and flowers all suggestive of love, life and fertility. Hanly uses the splatter effect of paint application to imitate the energy of creation and to show the interconnectedness of people and things. In some related works he pondered on the meaning of life and individual identity with titles such as Who Am I? asking the most difficult and puzzling of questions. This work is painted fluently and has all the qualities that make Hanly's work so appealing - colour, life, energy and optimism. Michael Dunn

Milan Mrkusich 38
Milan Mrkusich Earth Emblem IV oil on jute canvas signed; signed and dated '64 (twice); title inscribed signed and dated 1966 verso 1125x860mm $70,000 - $90,000
Milan Mrkusich has consistently worked as an abstract artist from the mid - to late - forties onward and has, since then, developed his painting practice within that broad category. His significant achievement of creating a very specific and unique aesthetic identity has been recognised in the honours system established by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand, which celebrates our living artistic icons, by their awarding him, in 2003, the title of Icon Artist. He is one of only two painters to receive such an award to date, the other being Ralph Hotere.
Earth Emblem IV, a painting from 1964, offers insight into Mrkusich's progression towards employing a more overtly geometrical structure and subtle use of colour within his paintings. Earlier in his career, it had been his practice to incorporate linear elements within the loose fields of colour and to use more organically-structured forms and blocks of colours. With a painting such as Earth Emblem IV, there is a developing sense of geometric order and balance, as well as a more intensified interest in colour-relations. In Earth Emblem IV, the turbulent, unconstrained quality of the gestural brushstrokes stand in opposition to the very precise controlled bands that surround them. The bands, because of their less modulated colour and precise frame-like structure appear to the eye as surface features in this painting, most especially the lower bands which have the quality of raw jute. The colour dynamism and reactivity of the freely applied marks of paint within the bands do not appear to the eye in this manner, these vibrant colours are caught in a flurry of activity as they react and vie for position in the depths of the painted field. It is both the formal geometric elements and the intricacies of Mrkusich's use of colour which stabilise the more turbulent gestural brushstrokes in this painting. The dynamic tension created by both the structural and colou r variations have been controlled in two ways. First, the dynamism of the dark hues at the base of the painting and the eddy of blues and greens in the centre appear confined by the hard boundaries of the surrounding coloured bands. Second, the artist relates these two confined fields to the surface bands by subtly tracing the proximate band tones th rough them. This method of colour combination lessens the perceptual reactivity of colour and unifies the surface of the painting. Both of these structural and colour techniques become characteristic features of Mrkusich's individual painting practice, which he refines and further develops over the course of his career.

AGUIDE FOR BUYERS Webb's have set out the following information for the benefit of first time buyers and those who are unfamiliar with auction procedures. Important note: Please refer to full conditions of sale for buyers printed in the reverse of this catalogue and displayed in the saleroom. Registration All intending buyers must complete a bidding form available from the reception desk Buying at Auction 1. Floor Bidders
Ensure that you have registered and obtained a buyer number before bidding on the lot or lots you have chosen Be aware that a buyer's premium of 12.5%+GST on the premium a total of 14.06% is payable by all buyers in addition to the hammer price. At some sales the amount of the buyers' premium may be more or less than 12.5%. Please make sure that you are aware of the amount of the buyer's premium. Make your bids clear preferably by holding up your buyer number card. If you make a mistake e.g. the auctioneer takes a bid from you at a higher level than you had intended or you realise that you had bid on the wrong lot ca ll out to the auctioneer immediately so that the bidding can be adjusted. Waiting until after the hammer falls is too late. If your bid is the highest and the lot is knocked down to you then you have entered a binding obligation to pay for that lot. 2. Sales Subject to Vendor's Consent Where your bid is the highest but still below the reserve the Auctioneer may declare you to be the "buyer subject to Vendor's consent ". This means that your bid is held as binding and will be communicated to the Vendor at the earliest opportunity. If the vendor accepts then there is a contractual obligation for you to pay for the lot. If the vendor does not accept you are released from any obligation however you will have first right to negotiate with the vendor through Webb's until an agreement is reached and Webb's will not present other offers to the vendor until your negotiations are ended. 3. Absentee Bids Webb's will endeavour to ensure that your bidding instructions are executed but accept no responsibility or liability for failure to do so. Lots will be bought as favourably as is allowed by bidding in the sale room and any reserve imposed by the vendor. Please note that Webb's cannot guarantee that another bidder will not be successful at your limit if in the course of competitive bidding someone else bids your limit first. Absentee bids are accepted by written instruction which can be sent by fax (e-mailed absentee bids are not accepted) up to I hour before the commencement of the sale. Absentee bids will be executed on the fol lowing basis: If your bid limit is equal to or above a reserve the Auctioneer may open the bidding at reserve on your behalf and will bid thereafter only in response to competition for the lot.If your bid limit is below a reserve the Auctioneer may open the bidding at your limit and if there are no further bids in the room may sell to you "subject to vendor's consent". In the absence of a reserve the Auctioneer may exercise your bid in advance of any opening bid or may open the bidding on your behalf at the Auctioneers estimate at the Auctioneer's sole discretion.
Telephone Bids The same conditions as above apply to telephone bidders. Webb's will telephone the number you have given several minutes before the lot you have request comes up for sale. If your phone is engaged or we are unable to make contact the auction will proceed without your bidding. Our staff will ask you to hold when we have made contact. They wi ll then tell you that your lot is about to come up. The bids wil l be relayed to you and you can enter the bidding at any time by making your call. Please note that the bidding at many auctions can be fast and furious . The auctioneer will not favour a phone bidder over and above buyers who are attending the auction by giving them more time to bid . You will need to establish your limit and make sure that you bid clearly and promptly. Telephone bids are only accepted for catalogued sales and on items with estimates over 500. Pre-Sale Estimates Estimates printed in the catalogue or given verbally are intended as a guide only and can be subject to revision nearer to the time of a sa le. Webb's staff are available during pre-sale viewing times and by appointment to assist prospective bidders with estimates and any aspect of the auction procedure. Condition Reports Webb 's staff will provide condition reports for out of Auckland buyers. However please note that no 6 in the Conditions of Sale for Buyers will still apply despite the obtaining of a condition report. Payment Payment for all items purchased is due on the day of sale immediately following completion of the sale. If full payment cannot be made on the day of sale a deposit of 10% of the tota l sum due must be made on the day of sale and the balance must be paid with in 5 working days. Payment is by cash bank cheque or Eftpos. Cheques will be accepted but must be cleared before delivery of goods will be given. Credit cards are not accepted. Packing and Freight Webb 's do not pack goods in house. However we will arrange for your items to be packed insured and shipped by a professional agent. All costs associated with packing and freight are payable by the purchaser. Valuation Service Webb's provide free market appraisals on Monday mornings from 9am-lpm or at other times by appointment. Webb's appraisers wi ll come to your home to view and appraise larger items. Webb's wi ll provide valuations for insurance matrimonial division family division etc. Please enquire at reception for charges. Valuation charges are refundab le on occasion when goods are subsequently offered for sale within a reasonable period.
