Lois White AK Dr. and Mrs E.T Rogers on original label affixed verso 395mm x 395mm Illustrated: By the Waters of Babylon; The Art of A. Lois White p.97 $ 50 ,000 - $ 60,000
A. Lois White's Eve Tempted 1948 is a highly charged representation of heterosexuality. An interwar artist who exemplifies the Auckland period of La Trobe art, White had a strong interest in Pre-Raphaelite ideas of Renaissance drawing and expression through figuration. Her body of paintings make up a narrative of personal allegory combined with political, sexual and biblical symbology. White's women create an encoded message about her experiences as a professional, single, creative woman; a proto-feminist for her time. This Eve tempted could be a study for Laocoon, a classical statue of father and sons strangled by snakes, that White was familiar with from the Auckland War Memorial Museum's copy. White's focus is not on the writhing agony of the male nude, instead she paints the golden glow of a local girl raised on New Zealand dairy, her fiesh dangerously close to the snake-fanged rocks that threaten to bite her from every side. The snake has her pinned down, entwining through her breasts, around her painter's arm, through her leg and over her lap. The only thing growing in this barren landscape is the tree of knowledge, which Eve's back is hard up against. The yoni shape created by her raised thigh in the foreground and the penetration of this space by the snake is an evocative, sensual statement that highlights the source of her temptation. The absence of Adam must have appeared as a strange image given the context that men were back from the war and present again in daily life. Everyone was settling down to the quarter acre paradise as White presented her dire warning on the temptation. She remained single, living with her sister in Blockhouse Bay. A business man who purchased quite a few of her paintings around the time Eve Tempted was painted wrote of 'succumbing to the teamwork of her women'. Eve's apple is framed by the tree of knowledge, however White, who confessed to a 'big burn up' of private material in 1980, retains her privacy. Eve Tempted was first exhibited with the New Group, a subsidiary of the Elam staff. They viewed sound drawing as a stand against 'the blatant emotionalism of abstraction'. By 1948, the La Trobe philosophy of art that held sway in Auckland for nearly three decades was drawing to a close. Poignantly, the fragmented rocks that threaten Eve also compositionally break the background into spiky diagonals giving the agitated feeling of a cubist landscape. A. Lois White's temptation was that she held her ground as the painting and life drawing tutor until 1963, long after her time had past at Elam. The ground Eve occupies in this painting prophesises the pressures that ended White's painting career during the 1950's style wars that pitched abstraction against figuration. Eve Tempted, signed and dated is a central painting in the representation of her female struggles. White's signature verifies that she too saw the work as important and as a painting she wished to be remembered by.

Frances Hodgkins 48
Frances Hodgkins Untitled (French Village) gouache signed 379mm x 380mm $45,000 - $65,000
For Hodgkins, France, especially provincial France, had the appeal of being warmer, sunnier and cheaper than England and it was there that she painted many of her finest watercolours. For much of her early and mid-career she painted outdoors by preference directly from the motif, as her letters tell and photographs show. Judging by a surviving photograph of her at work in Concarneau she painted standing up with her paper fastened to a board on a portable easel. This allowed her to step back from her paintings and concentrate on the large elements of her composition rather than be distracted by detail. She delighted in the old world charm of French towns and villages where she often stayed for extended periods of time, sometimes combining painting with teaching. Usually, as in this example, she preferred the domesticated landscape where the hand of man was apparent to the grander views of untamed nature. In her paintings we are rarely intimidated by her subjects, which are drawn from the everyday environment and activities of working people. Being on a modest budget much of her career she could not afford to live beyond her means and selected country inns or cheap lodgings for her accommodation. To discuss art she relied on her pupils and painter friends like Owen Merton whom she met on one of her stays at Concarneau. Therefore it is no surprise to find her depicting some simple village houses set beside a river, or maybe a canal, with their reflections in the water helping to make an interesting subject. The exact location is less important than how it is painted. She made views of English villages of a similar type. At this stage she was moving beyond the Impressionism that was so important for her painting up to the First World War and was looking at the formal elements of her compositions such as the shapes of the houses, their roofs, walls, gables and doors. By outlining and indicating them broadly she could give free reign to areas of colour and tone that did not need to be realistic or overly representational. In the reflections in the water she had more licence and could arrange the colours and tones in a looser, softer way so that they become almost abstract and can be enjoyed without too much concern about what they do or do not represent. She gives a lot of attention to the variety of line, colour and shape in her painting. Take for example those wonderful wiggly trees with their tall, thin trunks and sparse windswept canopies. It is the curve of the lines that counts more than an accurate rendering of the species, whatever it may be. And then there are those amazing clouds with strange circular holes of blue cut through them that seem to swirl with life and movement of their own. This painting has obviously been painted quickly and with a great deal of spontaneity and improvisation. The square format of the painting is not that common among landscapists but Hodgkins often uses it because it concentrates the imagery on the surface and reduces spatial illusionism and depth which is not her central concern. Her control of the medium is a joy to look at and nowhere more so than in the reflections of the houses where there is a wonderful watery translucency achieved through working her washes of colour into the wet surface of the paper and sponging off any excess. Touches of gouache enliven the work. This is a fine example of Hodgkins' landscape painting made at a time of transition in her work. Although undated, stylistically it resembles her watercolour Ludlow in the Auckland Art Gallery that can be dated circa 1919.

Petrus Van der Velden 49
Petrus Van der Velden Mount Rolleston and the Otira River oil on canvas signed 960mm x 1640mm Provenance: Private Collection, Auckland Reference: This painting is a version of the similarly large subject in the collection of the Christchurch Art Gallery The latter is illustrated in colour on page 49, Volume 1, in Petrus Von der Ve/den, A Catalogue Roisonne by Dr T.L Rodney Wilson. Dr Wilson writes, [the painting] 'initiated a recurrent quality in New Zealand Landscape painting: the confrontation of black and white, the mountain almost totally black, is thrown up against a white and cold grey sky of fat paint in a way that Colin McCahon was to later rediscover. ... these paintings stand as pinnacles in Van der Ve/den's oeuvre: $85,000 - $100,000
Van der Velden is often regarded as the finest artist to have worked in New Zealand in the 19th century and Eric McCormick among others saw his arrival in Christchurch in 1890 as marking a turning point in the development of professionalism in local painting. Soon after his arrival Van der Velden travelled to Otira Gorge and began the series of large landscapes that established his local reputation. In this series, beginning with the magnificent Mountain Stream, Otira Gorge, purchased by the Dunedin Art Gallery in 1892. he became an influential painter by interpreting the New Zealand landscape in
a new and powerful way. Previously his subject-matter and allegiances were Dutch and were, to a large extent. based on depicting the human figure as can be seen in his famous Dutch Funeral in the Christchurch Art Gallery. Now it was the mountainous terrain of the Southern Alps with its fast-flowing streams that became his inspiration. At Otira, which he visited several times, he made numerous studies some in pencil, some in oil that he worked up into large canvases in his Christchurch studio. Otira River (Mt Rolleston) is one subject that occurs in several large versions, another of which is in the Christchurch Art Gallery. These paintings are notable for their darkness and use of strong chiaroscuro to give drama to the scenes. Unlike some New Zealand landscape painters of the period, Van der Velden was not concerned with topography or scenery as such, rather he wanted to show the power of natural forces like wind and storm and use them to express his spiritual beliefs and Christian faith. The vortex of light behind Mt Rolleston and the white highlights on the water of the raging river suggest the power of light to break through the darkness and suggest hope and salvation. Van der Velden had more than his share of hardships and misfortunes so that it is tempting to read some personal message into a painting such as this. It is recorded that he had no interest in Otira except 'when thunder rolled and wind howled, and rain poured.' He is said to have slept on the grass when the sun shone. Looking at this painting it is easy to see Van der Velden as in some ways a forerunner of McCahon in his symbolic use of landscape elements and his near monochrome palette. Van der Velden's masterly control of oil painting technique can be seen in his fluent handling of the large areas of darkness, laid in thinly, and the impastoed highlights in the river and sky. He had close affiliations with the Hague School of Dutch Realists headed by Josef Israels when he lived in Holland. His sombre themes and pervading darkness of manner can be traced back through Israels to Rembrandt himself who was his ultimate spiritual and painterly mentor. This painting of Otira River /Mt Rolleston] is darker and more abbreviated than the Christchurch Art Gallery version and has flecks of sharp green in the water similar to those in the Auckland Art Gallery Otira Gorge. Like that painting it could date to his last years. circa 1912, when he revisited his Otira themes in works based on his memories and sketches.

Albin Martin was an interesting figure in early New Zealand. He brought with him not only a landscape tradition firmly based in the eighteenth century. but was also a strong advocate of the need to produce a distinctly New Zealand art movement. The idealised nature of his work tends to present a view that is not topographically correct. It was Martin's view that one needed to present something slightly better than topography by selecting the beauty and leaving out the ... "deformities of nature". Settled by Missionaries in 1823, his view of Paihia captures colonised New Zealand in its infancy; European dwellings, and saddled horses sit on newly cleared and grazed land. All the more interesting to modern viewers, there is no sign of the confiicts that shaped the history of the area.

John Gully 57
John Gully Mt Cook watercolour signed and dated 1871 735mm x 1315mm Illustrated: John Sidney Gully, New Zealand's Romantic Landscape, Paintings by John Gully, Millwood 1984 p.76
$120,000 - $140,000
John Gully made his reputation as a painter of the magnificent scenery of New Zealand, especially the lakes and mountains of the South Island. By 1870 he was the most acclaimed and famous painter in New Zealand. Although he worked exclusively in watercolour rather than in oils he became a successful professional painter living on the proceeds of his paintings and reproductions made from them. Eng lish by birth, he came to New Zealand in 1852 but did not establish himself as a painter until the 1860s when he was based in Nelson and taught art at Nelson College. While he did make sketches on the spot he preferred to do his finished paintings in the studio, often using photographs and other artists' studies as a reference for his own compositions. Gully was not strictly a topographical painter even though he painted recognisable and easily identifiable subjects like Milford Sound. He was not primarily trying to make accurate records of landforms that had long become familiar through the widespread images of photographers. Rather he was concerned with interpretation and the introduction of effects of light and atmosphere that would appeal to the romantic sensibilities of his viewers. It is said that he was impressed with the work of Turner, much of which was engraved, and which demonstrated remarkable effects of light and atmospheric recession. This explains something of his concern for effects of moonlight and weather conditions such as a passing storm. He was not content with small-scale watercolours but was among the first to make watercolour landscapes in a large format, as in the present example. In this fine work we see a view of Mt Cook and the Southern Alps taken from near the shores of Lake Pukaki. Mt Cook was among Gully's preferred subjects and he made some sixty paintings of it from various viewpoints. Here he has conceived the painting on a grand scale so that it would compete with an oil painting in size and effect. Quite often Gully showed his watercolours at Art Society exhibitions in various New Zealand and Australian venues, sometimes even in Europe. To get proper attention they needed to stand out on the wall. On this scale Gully was very successful at creating effects of atmospheric recession and distance. Mt Cook and the Alps appear to emerge from the haze of distance in all their grandeur and mystery and gain in immensity from the lack of detail. Indeed Gully indicates their great peaks and heavy cover of snow broadly and with great translucency. For these areas he often soaked the paper in water before applying his colours. All detail and local colour are confined to the foreground where they provide a vivid contrast to the mountains beyond. Each tree and rock is drawn clearly and painted in comparatively bright tints. Here the pigment is thicker and more opaque with the addition of body-colour. Gully was perfectly attuned to the expectations of the Victorian age. His works fit the requirements of the noted critic and landscapist William Mathew Hodgkins in his treatise on landscape painting in New Zealand published in 7880 : The mission of the landscape painter is to make us acquainted with the beautiful places on God's earth, and so render us more grateful to Him who has placed us here by affording us the means of contemplating the presentment of His handiwork. For many Victorian viewers Gully's landscapes achieved that goal to perfection.

Ensure that you have registered and obtained a buyer number before bidding on the lot or lots you have chosen Be aware that a buyer's premium of 12.50/o+GST on the premium a total of 14.060/o is payable by all buyers in addition to the hammer price. At some sales the amount of the buyers' premium may be more or less than 12.50/o.
Webb's will telephone the number you have given several minutes before the lot you have request comes up for sale. If your phone is engaged or we are unable to make contact the auction will proceed without your bidding. Our staff will ask you to hold when we have made contact. They will then tell you that your lot is about to come up. The bids will be relayed to you and you can enter the bidding at any time by making your call. Please note that the bidding at many auctions can be fast and furious. The auctioneer will not favour a phone bidder over and above buyers who are attending the auction by giving them more time to bid. You will need to establish your limit and make sure that you bid clearly and promptly. Telephone bids are only accepted for catalogued sales and on items with estimates over 500.
Make your bids clear preferably by holding up your buyer number card.
