- __ Matawhero~-~~-- --=-Matawhero wines are among tbe most highly regl!.(ded in New Zealand. Denis Irwin's wines have peen featured on the Queen's wine list and at New Zealand Government functions for visiting overseas dignitaries. Matawhero wines have earned international recognition for their Gewurtztraminer, Chardonnay and Cabernet-Merlot. I

The first grapes were planted on the Riverpoint Road, Gisborn , vineyards in 1968. ·W\ne production began in 1975 and the first Gold Medal award i~ New Zealand .dame ittt1978 for the Gewurtztraminer, a wine still drinking well and wp.ich now sells for $45 a W&t:1e 1 ,. The 1977 Gewurtztraminer was placed fourth in an international line-up of wines .in P~l1is. Thus began a legacy which now sees Matawhero acknowledged as the international leader in this variety outside of Alsace. r

As one of New Zealand's mid-sized producers, Matawh, ero's production is strictly li.mj.ted. Denis Irwin has personal control over his 100 acre vineyard and sees no need for further f., I I: I ' exRansion. j

Over the past nearly three years Denis Irwin was in Victoria, Australia, where he ,owAed and operated the "Rose of Australia" Hotel from where he sold and distributed Matawhero I and other New Zealand wines (as well as terrorising the locals). ),,1

He was also attempting to set up a vineyard at Gisbome, near Melbourne. Howeyer., IJ;\1,iin and Australia officially parted company late last year. As a result, wine stock that had been carefully nurtured in the cellars of Matawhero for d~stribution on the Melbourne mar~et ' is now to be offered to the New Zealand wine public. '

In the past, distribution of Matawhero has been by way of loyal mail-o~der clientele and some fine wine distributors. Now-in typical flamboyant style-Irwi-1,1 has ,decided~that a substantial part of the stockpile will be auctioned, to celebrate his 42nd Birthday~"Being a late maturer, I might get the key this time around," ,he said. ;VJ

Now is your opportunity to help Denis Irwin celebrate his Birtrltci~y. To taste some of his oldest and most treasured wines. 1 To have some birthday cake and other edible delicacies. ut And to enter some bids for the auction of wine, or participate directly in the auction, on:
