Introduction The first world war brought about a total reversal of fortunes when almost eighty percent of the firm's clientele disappeared. Europes' reigning monarchs and principalities were all gone .An1erican magnates like Randolf Hearst provided some continuity of business but with the advent of the Nazis after 1933 the firm was forced to emigrate. The family collection of priceless antique textiles was hidden in various monasteries to keep it out of the hands of the more avaricious German Generals. After the war it was reclaimed with the return of the family to Munich. The collection was housed in an enormous house in the Lenbachplatz. Rooms were devoted solely to the Renaissance or the Baroque or Louis XIV The upper floor housed the collection of embroideries. Ottoman velvets, Genoese brocades and Chinese Kossu weavings were all carefully folded and stored in especially constructed drawers. The carpet collection took up three floors of an adjoining building.

The closing of Hart Fine Antiques & Interiors provides both the trade and private buyer with the exciting prospect of purchasing from a collection that is unique in New Zealand. Wendy Hart travelled the world searching for unusual antiques and decorative items to furnish her business. Outstanding among the many fine pieces in this catalogue are the textiles purchased at the Christie's sale of the Bernheimer Family Collection of Textiles (see note below) held in London in 1996.At a sale in which almost all the 530 lots sold above their top estimates, and in one of the more spectacular cases, a lot described as Various tapestry fragments with an estimate of 250 to 450 pounds realising 4,800 pounds, Wendy Hart never-the-less managed to secure a reasonable number of the lots sufficient for her to make her stock of cushions. The pieces she secured that were relatively intact she retained as hangings or had framed, a few such are in this catalogue. Because there are a good many lots that incorporate textiles from this famous collection, some details of it are provided below.

When Konrad, the fourth generation of the Bernl1ein1er's decided to sell the collection in 1996, he made the following concluding comment in the catalogue introduction from which these notes have been derived.

During the last ten years the task of sourcing replacement stock for her business had become increasingly difficult. The quality pieces of antique furniture that had been a mainstay of Hart Antiques were ever harder to find at prices, that, even with her eternally optimistic outlook, might realistically find buyers on the local market. And so reluctantly,Wendy Hart decided to put her energy and resources into her Australasian franchise for KA Design, a Spanish fabric supplier, and close the antique business. Now on her travels, her future buying will be for her own collection exclusively.

' Now a new generation of collectors will be given the opportunity to acquire unique textile treasures, items which for the most part have been in my family's possession for at least 60-80 years or more. The placement of the textiles into new collections, which bring them into a totally different context, will breathe new life into each of them. I am certain this would please my great grandfather and his sons, who had initially discovered these objects, immensely. As I bid the Bernhein1er collection farewell , I do so with tears in my eyes but also with a smile.'

The collection offered here comprises the complete stock of the recently closed Parnell business and is to be offered either without reserve or at reserves below cost.

Important Notice Ceramics in this Catalogue

The Bernheimer Family Collection of Textiles Lehmann Bernheimer founded a small fabric store in Munich in 1865 from which he offered materials for both dresses and furnishing . From humble beginnings the firm grew until eventually it was receiving commissions from the court of Ludwig II.This stroke of good luck, for Ludwig was undergoing a craze for building palaces, meant that besides providing all the fabrics for furnishing the palaces, Bernheirner's were able to secure other in1portant commissions such as decorating the interiors of first and second class railway carriages .When Ludwig died in 1886, the firm supplied the enormous quantity of black velvet for the state funeral and procession.

Much of the old pottery and many ceramic pieces in this catalogue have been repaired or have faults to some degree . This has not always been noted in the brief descriptions provided. BUYERS MUST INSPECT ITEMS THAT INTEREST THEM AND BE SATISFIED AS TO CONDITION. BIDDERS WILL BE DEEMED TO HAVE FULL APPRECIATION OF ANY DEFECTS IN MAKlNG BIDS FOR CERAMICS IN THIS CATALOGUE

Refreshments

With the firm soundly established, Lehmann Bernheimer began enlarging his stock to include antique carpets and textiles and he developed a passion for the Italian Renaissance. Early in the new century by which time the firm was furnishing most of the palaces and great houses of Europe, Bernhein1er handed the business over to his three sons.

The sale is expected to fmish at approximatley 6pm. Coffee, tea and light refreshments will be on sale throughout the day
