108 John Alexander Gilfillan

The Emigrants' Departure oil on canvas with The Immigrants' Arrival oil on canvas each57x75

Provenance: Collection of Dr Neville Hogg, North Auckland.

A pair, the paintings were originally located in Wellington and traced back to the artist's time in Wanganui They were probably painted in Scotland before

Gilfillan emigrated to New Zealand in 1842. In both pictures the subject relates to Australia , as the notice on the wall of the inn in the first picture and the aborigines in the second indicate. It is known that Gilfillan produced subject pictures while still in Glasgow , usually for the purpose of illustrating books. He did not to to Australia until after members of his family were killed by Maoris on his farm near Wanganui in April , 1847 . First he stayed in Sydney , moved to Adelaide , then to the goldfields before settling in Melbourne in 1856 .

109 John Alexander Gilfillan

Untitled Landscape oil on canvas

61 x92

Painted before Gilfillan came to New Zealand in 1842 , the treatment of the figure and other details in the picture are consistent with the paintings by Gilfillan in the Sarjeant Gallery , Wanganui.

The subject of the picture is probably the Wharfe where it flows through the Strid Gorge , not far from Bolton Abbey , North Yorkshire. Illustrated.

London Street with Five Figures oil on canvas signed with monogram 59x48

With its high vantage point, strong design, vigorous brush work and short-

hand imagery, this painting is typical of the London street scenes Raymond McIntyre produced between 1917 and 1919. Some of these are more solidly painted, others more sketchy. The work shows the artist's interest in what was then seen in London as "the more

advanced painters of Paris" (Frank Rutter, Oct. 1918)

He calls for Elias oil on hardboard signed and dated August 1959 inscribed on the back by the artist in black paint: " No 27, Colin McCahon He Calls for Elias Aug '59. Solpah 12 gns"

78x67

McCahon painted the Elias series at his Titirangi home during 1959. It is a large series of which several paintings are major works , including this painting. The

Elias series is one of several important series which occupied McCahon in the productive years following his trip to America in 1958. The series is about the inhibiting effect doubt can have on the actions of people. The text uses the ambiguous interpretation of the words Jesus cried out just before He died on the Cross, as recorded in St Matthew's Gospel. The painting was first exhibited

at Gallery 91, Christchurch, October 1959, and was included in the Colin McCahon, A Survey Exhibition, Auckland City Art Gallery, March 1972: cat.no 35. Refer: Gordon H. Brown. Colin McCahon. Artist 1984, p.117 with illustrations.
