INTRODUCTION

Webb's sale last December of the collection of 19th Century paintings formed by the late Sir Ernest Davis of which the highlights were " Summer " by Sir William Reynolds Stephens , so ld for $225 ,000 and " The Delphic Oracle " by John Godward sold for $87 ,000 , did not pass unnoticed by the London art market. This was for the good reason that both pictures set world record prices for works by the artists. With four prominent London dealers involved in the bidding , it was inevitable that the story should spread around the London art trade within days of the sale

On December 17th the Antiques Trade Gazette , a weekly paper circulating throughout the British art and antique trade ran a story headed " London dealers slug it out to the delight of Kiwis ". While the two largest paintings in that sale were sold to London buyers , it was not unnoticed that the remainder of the Victorian paintings in the catalogue had stayed in New Zealand and that there had been strong local bidding for all the British pictures including " Summer " and " The Delphic Oracle ".

As a consequence , through a London contact, Webb ' s were offered in March , a small collection of late 19th Century pictures and sculpture by English and French artists. This collection , compiled in recent years from the London salerooms , compr ises some very fine examples of Salon painting at the turn of the century , and along with other excellent 19th Century paintings in the catalogue from the estate of the late Fred Ambler and the collection of Lion Breweries Ltd make this sale one of the largest and most varied ever to be offered in New Zealand.

Thomas Jones Barker 1815-1882

The Relief of Lucknow oil on canvas

signed T. Jones Barker and dated 1859

105.5 x 183.5 cm

This historically important painting was made after drawings executed on the spot by Egron Lundgren (1815-1875) and appears to have been a preliminary but fully developed study for a larger painting which was in the collection of the Glasgow Museum and Art Gallery until it was irreparably damaged during wartime storage. The Glasgow painting measured 108 x 190 inches and was acquired in 1875. It too was dated 1859. No photographs exist of the destroyed Glasgow painting. The Swedish painter , Lundgren who was working in England where he was very popular with Queen Victoria, was commissioned by the London dealer Thomas Agnew, to travel to India to make

on the spot drawings of the scene at Lucknow. As Lundgren remained in India while his drawings were returned to England, it can be reasonably assumed that Agnew also commissioned Barker to make the painting from which he subsequently published an edition of large engravings The subject represents the historical incident during the Indian Mutiny when Sir Colin Campbell , relieved the besieged forces at Lucknow led by General Sir Henry Havelock and Sir James Outram, November 17 , 1857 The painting incorporates portraits of many of the officers and personages involved in the action. The three most important subjects included in the painting reading

from left to right are , Sir Henry Havelock , Sir James Outram , Sir Colin Campbell (later Lord Clyde). Grouped around are a selection of the officers and men involved both in the forces that found themselves besieged and those that were with Sir Co lin Campbell head of the relieving troops , and include Sir John Inglis , Sir Davi d Baird , Sir Hope Grant , Sir W R Man sfield , Sir Robert Napier , The Hon Adr ian Hope , Colone l Alison (afterwards General Sir Archibald Alison) , Capta i n Roberts (Earl Roberts) , Lieut. HopeJohnstone , Colonel Metcalfe , Major Anson etc A detailed key is available on request. The walls , gates , palaces , and towers of Lucknow are in the background

19

and include the Red Gate , tombs of the King and Queen inside the Kaiserbagh , minarets of the City , The Chuter Manzil Palace , the Farhat Baksh , the river Goomty , the tower of the gateway to Motee Mahal , and the residency tower, where the European residents of Lucknow had been besieged' The engraving after the painting was made by C G Lewis and published by Thomas Agnew and Sons in 1860 A copy of the engraving is in the collection of the National Army Museum
