The September sales continued the pattern of recent sales with only the genuinely outstanding items attracting spirited bidding and achieving excellent prices as a consequence. The overall tone of sales still reflects the lacklustre character of the economy, but good attendances suggests both buyers and sellers are waiting in expectation of better things to come. The market is still definitely in the favour of tho e interested in collecting at a level below the exceptional.

An excellent example of Michael Smithcr's 'family'

paintings of the sixtie , illustrated below, realized $27,000 plus premium. The estimate was $20,000 to $30,000.

New Zealand Paintings The September sale of New Zealand and foreign paintings was the first sale for a long time in which a Maori portrait by Charles Goldie failed to sell under the hammer after spirited bidding. Wherea in July, a small portrait of Guide ophia reached its top estimate of $60,000 plus premium, a portrait of the same ize of an Arawa Chieftaine failed in September to reach its re erve, elling after the ale for $40,000. A reminder if we need one, of the mallne s of our market in New Zealand. When $200,000 plus premium wa paid at the beginning of the year for a large portrait of Te Aho, and there were three di appointed underbidders, it was felt that Goldie would b ke nly sought after in future ales. Reinforcing that view was the intere t generated by the splendid Goldie exhibition which opened in July at the Auckland Art Gallery. Timing i of the essence in marketing anything of value , and when the inclu ion of a Goldie portrait in a al happens to coincide with other portraits appearing el ewhere on the market, prices are bound to be effected .

Two paintings by hane otton sold above estimate . A small oil , lice , illustrated below sold for $5 ,000 plus premium against estimates of $3 ,000 to $4 ,000.

For lack of any ale of major collection of colonial painting the market continues to be focused on contemporary art and good example by our b tter known arli t continue to attract high price . Work by McCahon in the eptember

When an early topographical painting has a good subject of local interest, it can be expected to attract competitive bidding and Charles Blom.field's little oil painting Devonport Beach and North /lead certainly attracted two keen buyer . It was estimated to make between $2500 and $3500 and wa knocked down finally for $8000 plu premium.

Jewellery

Decorative Arts

Jewellery remains the one category which contradicts the aforementioned trend with sales continuing to expand resulting in higher prices as more buyers attend the sales.Jewellery consultant Christopher Devereaux comments that the buoyant sales reflect overseas experience as private buyers and sellers take advantage of a new window of opportunity provided by jewellery auctions tailored to meet their needs, as distinct from the earlier market when minimal catalogue descriptions suited only the trade. In addition, the seller usually gets more than would be offered by a sale to the trade, and the buyer usually pays less than would be asked by the second-hand jewellery dealer, and much less than the price for the same items bought new. The exceptions are those rare and unusual pieces which are impossible to replace and will always command top prices.

Decorative Arts sales in September and November included a variety of interesting material with furniture , ceramics, silver and oriental items dominating the catalogues and largely selfug at satisfactory prices. Two unusual items in the sales were a 19th century Taiaha with a collar of red fabric from the tunic of a British soldier which was estimated to realize between $3000 and $4000 and which made $4500 plus premium, and a New Zealand war medal from the 1861-1866 land wars which fetched $440 against estimates of $350$450. See illustrations of each below. These items along with high demand for good examples of New Zealand furniture further demonstrate increasing interest in ' our place'.

Two items of jewellery in the September sale, illustrated below, fell into the category of rare and unusual and attracted very keen bidding. The magnificent serpentine twenty-stone diamond brooch realized $60,000 and the solitaire diamond ring of 3.39 carats made $37,000 against its presale estimates of $25 ,000 to $35 ,000.

A Sale of the complete stock in trade of Hart Fine Antiques & Interiors

Farewell Angela

The Hart sale in October attracted a big attendance for the Sunday auction which ran from 11am until 6pm. Prices were strong for most categories in the catalogue with textile prices exceptional for a market relatively unsophisticated in this specialist area. Five cushions made from 18th century silk fabric embroidered with metallic tlu·ead and acquired by Wendy Hart from the sale of the famous Bernheimer textile collection at Christie's in 1966 made prices between $1 ,800 and $1 ,600 each, while a 17th century tapestry hanging sourced from the same collection realized $9,000.

Webb's regular customers will be truly sorry to learn that after eight years of remarkable service as Webb's front of house person, Angela WoodyearSmith is retiring and leaving Auckland with husband Richard to find a quiet spot in the country as far from an auction room as is possible. Customers have been constantly amazed watching Angela manage seven telephone lines while dealing with the normal line-up of buyers and sellers at the reception counter; treating everyone with the same friendly courtesy and never ' losing it' when under extreme pressure. The strongest expression of her feelings when under pressure would be a barely audible 'panicking now'.

The December sales will provide customers with a last opportunity to wish Angela a very happy and peaceful retirement.

Forthcoming sales The Aston Family Collection to be sold in Rotorua on Sunday 8th March, 1988 ( see back cover advertisement for further details ) The George Foster Horological Collection The Canterbury Museum has described this collection as 'unparalleled in Australasian Museums for its breadth'. The late George Foster of Christchurch was well known in horological circles throughout New Zealand and Australia. He contributed numerous articles to horological journals. His executors have arranged for the large collection of early watch movements and horological tools to be sold through Christie's in London. Australasian collectors are fortunate that the clocks, musical boxes and related items comprising the balance of the collection are to be offered locally.

The Davenport bisque tureen and cover c.1795 illustrated below made the excellent price of $4, 500.

In addition to the Foster Collection, Webb's will offer another Christchurch collection comprising over one hundred domestic clocks of collectable interest formed by the late Laurie Thomas. The sale is scheduled for early 1988 and Ross Millar who will prepare the catalogue would like to include categories in it for scientific instruments and other mechanical items of a collectable nature including vintage radios. He recommends that out of Auckland vendors send photographs to facilitate appraisals.
