Attack on the British Encampment by Hau Haus at Nukumaru , 24th January 1865 oil on canvas signed and dated 1907 76 x 127 cm

In 1865 Lieut-General Cameron left Wanganui with 2000 Imperial troops, making his first camp at Nukumaru on 24th January Although on flat land dotted with small lakes , the tall reeds , flax and tutu bushes gave cover to a strong force of Maoris under the Hauhau leader Patohe. They mounted their attack in broad daylight - the first such surprise attack on a British camp During the first volley from cover and the charge that followed which took the Maoris well into the camp , 16 soldiers were killed and 32 wounded. Major Witchell and his mounted men , with swords drawn , charged (as shown in the painting) and drove the attackers back into cover. James Cowan, in the early part of chapter 5 , vol. 2 of The New Zealand Wars gives details of this and the later attacks, skirmishes and Cameron ' s resiting of the camp on safer ground

Marken Funeral Procession oil on canvas signed and dated 1872

52 8 x 75.7 cm

Refer : Art New Zealand No 1 1976 p 23

Illustrated : idem , col.pl. p23

Dr Rodney Wilson says of the six major funeral subjects , 'It was van der Velden ' s intention to remind us in the funeral works that life is an infinitesimally tiny drop in the oceam of eternal time , and that possession of it is a privilege to be enjoyed but ultimately surrendered'

Dr Wilson describes the painting here as 'smaller and more colourful with its figures closer to the picture plane ' than the larger work to which it is closely related titled , Dutch Funeral , Marken in the collection of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery He goes on , ' It was these works more than any others that gave van der Velden his local reputation '. (A year after this work was painted , the Rijksmuseum acquired a Marken Interior) . ' They also formed a decisive turning point in his career when Isaac Israels , the early leader of the Hague School invited van der Velden to join his group in 1875 Israel 's decision was motivated by a successful exhibition of Marken works including the funeral pieces

Van der Velden was to go on to paint other subjects ; but Marken rem ains the nucleus of his Dutch period and the earliest most profound man ifestation of the ideas present in the New Zealand Otira cycle .'

178 Rita Angus 1908-1970 Mt Stewart , Waiau , North Canterbury oil on board c 1931-32 signed Rita Cook in pencil and aga in on reverse in brushpoint 40 x 50 5 cm

This very important landscape was painted between the years 1931 and 1932 and has long been considered lost. For this reason it was not included in the National Gallery's 1982 Rita Angus Exhibition though its existence was known from photographs and exhibition records. It can be regarded as the artist's first major landscape in oil after leaving art school for it comes five years earl ier than her painting Cass (1936-7) in the Robert McDougall Art Gallery and Otago Landscape (1940) in the Auckland City Art Gallery Its whereabouts have been unknown until recently when it was returned to New Zealand from aboard. Of these three paintings the late Professor Frederick Page wrote in Landfall Vol. IV , No. 3 (1961) " They were something new in New Zealand pa inting , compared with the scenes being churned out at Society of Arts Shows ."
