Sharpe painted the watercolour after he had moved to Newcastle in Australia. His biographer, Roger Blackley believes that he produced it out of a deep nostalgia for New Zealand.

He returned to Sydney vowing to scour the state in search for more paintings by Sharpe. Another early New Zealand watercolour to attract keen interest and competitive bidding was the delightful view of old Queenstown and the Remarkables by Christopher Au brey. Titled, Queenstown Township with Lake Wakatipu and the Paddle Steamer ' Antrim', and of only small proportions, it made the excellent price of $15 ,000. The Len Castle Collection An important private collection of his pots in this catalogue 'Len Castle is in my opinion New Zealand 's pre-eminent potter and one who has become a "ceramics ambassador" to the world as the representative of his native land. His reputation is international.'
The above quotation is from A Potting Reminiscence by Dr Terry Barrow, ethnologist at the Bishop Museum, Hawaii, which was p ublished in the Dowse Art Museum's catalogue of a Len Castle retrospective exhibition in 1994. In the same catalogue , the Director of th e Dowse Museum, Bob Maysmor writes in his introduction, ' Few people viewing the diversity of the exhibition will find it easy to believe the many layered, multiplicity of clay shapes and forms exhibited could be the work of just one person. Len Castle - artist, technician, scientist, photographer, gentleman - is truly a master of his art. Len tells that he has fashioned over 100
tons of clay in his potting life - this amazing achievement affirms his astounding commitment and dedication to his art.' In the five years since that catalogue was published, Castle's reputation has contin ued to grow with serious collectors of New Zealand ceramics. His pots are in the collections of every major museum in this country as well as in all in1portant private collections here and in a good many overseas.
For Webb's customers , the good news is that their entries in the catalogue for the big Maritime Sale will be promoted to over one h u ndred thousand American Express Platinum and Gold Cardmembers worldwide. For American Express Cardmembers,

Before too long however, we will see New Zealand pots regularly breeching the five thousand dollar mark, and the odds are strong that Len Castle's pots will be leading the market in this regard. Len Castle will talk about his work at Webb's on Tuesday 30th March at 6pm The Castle Collection; see lots 61 4 - 666
The serious collecting of ceramics in New Zealand is still a relatively new pursuit and accordingly, many fine pieces are resold at very modest prices .
American Express Support For the Millennium Sale Webb's Millenniu m Maritime Sale scheduled for February 2000 to coincide with the America's Cup will receive a boost with the sponsorship of American Express.

Ida Gertrude Eise was a student at the Elam School of Art from 1909 to 1915. She first taught drawing and design at the New Plymouth Technical School before her appointment to the staff of Elam in 1920 where she was to teach a whole generation of Auckland art students until her retirement in 1956. After a visit to Europe in 1959 she tutored painting classes at the Auckland Society of Arts until 1976.

In 1976 Ida Eise was awarded the M.B.E.in recognition of her services to art. In 1936 and 1949 she was awarded the Bledisloe Medal for landscape
pamtmg She served on the council of the Art Society for many years and was one of the first six Fellows elected by the Society. She was a regular exhibitor with the Society for sixty-two years. Ida Eise died in 1978 having made a generous bequest of her collection of paintings to the Society. Under the terms of her bequest, monies were raised from the sale of some of her collectio n and invested to fund a prize for painting within the membership of the Society. Now in need of further funding to carry
o ut its programs, the Council of the Auckland Society of Arts has decided to dispose of the balance of the Ida Eise Collection by an auction in the Society's rooms on Monday 12th April. One hundred works will go under the hammer and the Council's resolve is to let the market determine prices. Collectors of New Zealand landscape and still life painting w ill enjoy this unusual opportunity to add to their collections.

Modern Movement Glass 601 A Rene Lalique 'Victoire' Car Mascot. Satin finish with polished stylised hair. Raised mark R. Lalique, France, with double tailed Q . Along with a chromed mount with green perspex filters. 1.260mm, H.160mm. $12000-14000
Arguably among the rarer of Lalique's car mascots Victoire has a cachet for this reason and no doubt because of its striking design. The Valkyrie-like portrait bust stretches fo1ward on a slender neck as if against the rushing wind whose stream defines her coiffure. This Victoire was given to the owner's father with the intention that it would be mounted on bis prize 1922 Sunbeam Sports Tourer; now restored and in Auckland. Subsequently it was given to the vendor to mount on his Triumph Herald. Thankfully neither fixing occurred. illustrated right
