Highlights of Webb's Summer Sales Fine Paintings, Jewellery and Decorative Arts held in December & February & The Millennium Maritime Sale held in January To all the prices realised add ten percent buyer's premium
The December Fine Art Sale The sale of fine paintings on Monday 13th December last continued the improvement in the market noticeable throughout the year. With an improved economy, and the instability brought about by the election behind us, the growth in the art market should continue into the foreseeable future . One positive indicator Webb's has noticed throughout the last twelve months has been the steady increase in demand for its art catalogues with many going to expatriate New Zealanders abroad. Seven works went to offshore buyers including the major Fomison at $100,000. More buyers mean better prices, better prices attract better paintings to the saleroom , better paintings attract better prices and so the market builds. This year will see a change to the art sale calender with the majority of lower value works removed from the big q uarterly catalogues to be sold in separate sales. Th is change is due to the increasing number of works being entered and the consequent pressure on display space. These sales, with simple photocopied catalogues, will be held the day following the bi-monthly sales of jewellery and decorative arts. Dates for all sales can be found in the Webb 's calendar that accompanies this catalogue. A further innovation this year w ill be introductory talks on works in the art catalogues, given by leading professionals from the art world and supported by Webb's staff. The talks are intended to encourage new collectors not yet exposed to New Zealand art and to provide advice to those wishing to invest. Topics will cover themes and periods in New Zealand art and touch on the advantages, both financial and life enriching, of building a collection. The first guest speaker will be Alexa Johnson, former curator of New Zealand Art at the Auckland City Art Gallery, w ho will discuss some of the finer points of works in this catalogue. Peter Webb and Sophie Coupland w ill discuss the art market and encourage questions from the audience. The date is Thursday 23rd March at 6pm.Adrnission is$ 10 or by catalogue. A catalogue will admit two. Some of the highlights of the December art sale are set out below. Tony Fomison 's The Watcher on the Shore oil on linen on board , 1975-76, 455x790mm attracted strong competition, selling well above its top estimate for $100,000 plus premium (Illustrated), to a New Zealander residing in Australia. A McCahon watercolour, an early example from his French Bay series, realized $80,000 plus premium, while a wash drawing by the same artist titled Numeral 3, made $36,000. (Illustrated) Paintings by Pat Hanly continue to be in demand w ith an oil, Hope Vessel Afire selling for $20,000 (Illustrated), and the same artist's small oil titled Bright Light Garden realizing $9,750 . Two small works by Shane Cotton Good Tree Bad Tree and In Life Everlasting achieved considerably more than expected at $5 ,000 and $5 ,500 (Illustrated). These prices reflect a greater demand than the market can supply for this artist's work. A Jenny Dolezel work on paper What is This Real Life Thing I Keep Hearing About? also achieved an exceptional price at $6. 750. (lllustrated)
Amongst the earlier works in the catalogue, a C.FGoldie portrait of his teacher, Louis John Steele, made top price, selling to the Museum of New Zealand for $30,000. (Illustrated) Works by 19th century New Zealand folk artists are always in demand and a small painted kauri panel , Naval Steam Vessel and Maori Pah site sold way over its top estimate for $8,500. (Illustrated) The catalogue included seven paintings by Peter McIntyre, with top price being paid for Shearing Sheds, Central Otago an oil , 70 x 90cm which made $20,000. (Illustrated)
The December & February Jewellery Sales The record response to the December catalogue once again clearly demonstrates the fact that for many buyers quality is the primary criterion in choosing jewellery. Buyers are certainly better informed , either as a result of their own research or as a result of seeking opinion from Jewellery Consultant Christopher Devereaux. We believe the spirited bidding for the better or rare items is a direct result of the confidence that the buyers have from making an informed choice. The top price for the sale was $25,000 for a fabulous emerald and diamond ring (illustrated). However diamonds, it would seem, are everybody's best friend. The several significant stones on offer were snapped up: the 2.89ct solitaire making $18,000 against an upper estimate of $16 ,500 ; an impressive diamond cluster (illustrated) centred by a 3.9ct old cut diamond made $ I 4,500 , a 2.5ct emerald-cut pendant went for $14,000, a 1.6ct fancy yellow for $12 ,000 and virtually all of the other diamonds in the sale found a new home. Fierce competition saw a remarkable pair of jade & diamond bangles (illustrated) soar above their upper estimate of $15 ,000 to be finally knocked down at $18,500 . Similarly a desirable necklace ofblackTahitian South Seas pearls made $15 ,000 against the upper estimate of $10,500. The collection of pocket & wristwatches were mostly sold, Rolex showing its universal popularity being most keenly sought after. The Tudor & Stuart coins were all sold, the overall figure exceeding the vendor's expectation, as were the gold coins on offer. The February sale was unexpectedly buoyant, the extensive affordable jewellery section caught the interest of buyers resulting in a clearance of over 90%. The small , but fine quality, catalogued offering was also enthusiastically received. Highlights were a l .08ct fine white Princess cut diamond that brought the highest price of the night, making its upper estimate of $12,500; an art deco diamond clip exceeded its upper estimate of $6000 to be knocked down at $6500; while a two diamond estate ring soared past its upper estimate of $2500 to finally sell for $4600. While sales here continue to reflect the world-wide renaissance of interest in diamonds, active interest in the other lots offered demonstrated signs of broader tastes being met.
The December Decorative Art Sale The December catalogue of decorative arts and furniture included an offering of Maori artefacts that attracted enthusiastic bidding.A fine contact period canoe prow, Tauihu, circa 1835, sold for $32 ,500 , against estimates of $20 ,000 to $30,000, (illustrated) and the carved child 's chair, (illustrated on the next page), left its top estimate of $1000 far behind, selling for $4000. Furniture sold well to both trade and private buyers with prices being in line with recent sales. Georgian, early English and French furniture being the most sought after, while Victorian
'brown ' furniture remains unfashionable and relatively inexpensive. The New Zealand kauri and rimu bookcase (illustrated previous page) sold for $7000. Amongst items of antique silver for which there continues to be a healthy demand, a set of four silver candlesticks 1747-48 by Ernest Seiber made $15 ,000. (Illustrated) Amongst the decorative items, a life-size 19th century carved and painted wood statue of Christ from a southern German church , sold for $5000. (Illustrated)
The January Millennium Maritime Sale A year in preparation , the three clay sale of maritime paintings and collectibles, live and model yachts and seacraft, together with the Gordon Liddy collections of Ships' portraits by William Forster, his library on whaling and his superb collection of antique scrimshaw, was an outstanding success, achieving a total approaching 1.5 million dollars. Buyers ea.me from all around the world .The timing of the sale to coincide with the Louis Vuitton Challengers' Cup races in Auckland paid cliviclencls with a good number of the fifteen hundred lots selling to visitors to the America 's Cup basin. Denis Cormor was amongst the buyers and a Swiss owner of one of the super yachts purchased five of the best pond yachts in the catalogue. The Gordon Liddy collection of Ships' portraits by William James Forster of historic New Zealand and Australian vessels made up a significant portion of the marine paintings in the catalogue. Forster, who lived for a time in this country before moving to Australia is deserving of greater recognition by the market than he has received hitherto. Gordon Liddy traced his grave to an unmarked plot in a Sydney cemetery. He died a pauper in 1891. Bidding for the twenty-one Forster watercolours was fairly evenly divided between Australian and local collectors, with the top price of $6,500 being paid for lot one, anl886 portrait of the Sydney ketch, Bellinger (illustratecl). A portrait of the Monowai, broken up in 1909 to make a breakwater at Gisborne, made the next best price of $5 ,750. Top price for any painting in the sale was the $28,000 paid for Eddystone Lighthouse, a large oil by 19th century Tasmanian artist,Ja.mes Forrest. (Illustrated next page) The Liddy scrimshaw collection was prevented from leaving Australia by the local antiquities act and so it was sold in the Double Bay salerooms of Gooclmans. As most of the scrimshaw items were of Australian interest, it was entirely appropriate to have it sold in Sydney, although an Auckland collector with an historically significant collection of whaling material travelled to Sydney to inspect the collection and then bid by telephone on the clay of the sale. He made a successful application to the Australian authorities to have his pieces exported to New Zealand.Top price for a scrimshaw sperm whale 's tooth (lot 204) was the $7,800 paid for a two-sided tooth engraved with a three masted full rigged whaling ship at work . The estimate was $2000 to $3000. (Illustrated). Most of the engraved teeth sold between $3000 and $6000. Had the scrimshaw been free of export and import restrictions and available to the American market, the prices would have been much higher. While almost everybody agrees with the international moratorium on trading in whale and elephant ivory to offer protection to the living animals, there must be a case for making antique folk art pieces like the scrimshaw

Michael Connel , a leading Australian dealer in marine antiques who attended the sale was heard to remark that surely the price achieved for a diver 's copper and brass helmet must have set a world record . Record or not, the $15,000 paid for lot 976, which included diver's boots and sheath knife ,against estimates of $5000 to $7000 set the saleroom gasping. Perhaps it was the photograph of a former owner of the lot that encouraged such a good price. (Illustrated) A classic New Zealand RLmabout, Miss Auckland, sold post sale for $15,000 while the sale's highest price was reserved for the manuscript letter signed by Captain James Cook in whid1 he requested permission to provision the Endeavour for its first voyage to the Pacific. The single sheet letter sold for $51 ,000. (Illustrated) Another historical item of Pacific interest that pre-dated the Cook letter, was the bronze canon off the ill-fated Boussole, flagship of the French explorer, Laperouse. The Boussole along with the Astrolabe both disappeared after leaving Sydney Harbour in 1788.The canon was salvaged off the wreck in 1962 by Reece Oiscombe. It sold for $25 ,000 and the buyer intends to offer it on long term loan to the National Maritime Museum in Auckland. (Illustrated) The Millennium Catalogue also included a small private collection of ten classic cars, seven of which were sold .A Jaguar 1958 XK 150 "S" Roadster made the top price of $90,000. (Illustrated) The1932 Riley Kestral Coupe illustrated here, sold for $23,500. Ninety year old Mr Frank Renfrew travelled down from Warkworth to bid farewell to a car that he had owned for much of its life, up until seven years ago when he had to give up driving. He sold it to the owner of the collection on offer at this sale. The Riley 's unique features included a sliding roof and a roof door that opened with the driver's door. (Illustrated) The Millennium Sale had a buyer's premium of 12.5% that

713 Colin McCahon Waterfa ll 1964 enamel w ith sand on board signed and dated Dec '64; signed again and elated December 1964, verso 304 x 304 mm The Wateifall series, executed between 1959 and 1965, employs the same thematic imagery as the Hillside series of works produced at around the same time.An arch, falling usually from right to left, forms the essential component of the simple compositions. In the Waterfall works this is a curve of light through a dark expanse. In this work,a black hillside stands out from a rich blue sky. McCahon was influenced by the work of William Hodges whilst working at the Auckland Art Gallery and was particularly interested in " Watetfall in Dusky Bay, New Zealand, 1775, a large landscape in which a cascade tumbled out of the dark gloomy bush "
(Gordon H. Brown,"Colin McCahon:Arti st", Reed , 199B, p.103). The reference to Hodges in McCahon 's Waterfa lls is oblique with any influence being several times removed. "McCahon informs us , the Waterfalls fell and raged
and became as still silent falls of ligbt for a long time. 1 look back will? joy on taking a brusb of wbite paint and curving tbrougb tbe darkness witb a line of wbite-The

Tawera Landscape with Tree oil on canvas title inscribed signed and dated 1968 verso 360 X 305mm This work is typical with its simplified , childlike landscape and stylised figurative forms. It uses the asexual Tawera image, a reoccurring form in Illingworth's work of this period and the subject of the Barry Lett Gallery's, Multiple screenprint. It is "a natural and logical total symbol for the tiny stylised
people who have been included in so may of his paintings. Here, too , we find the stylised portrayal of the alm ost idyllic landscape that Illingworth feels this country is". Barry Lett Gallery, Multiples cover sheet $15 ,000-20,000

As was typical of Binney's works of this period , bird forms dominate with the landscape reduced to a token. The strong forms of the birds, the linear rhytlm1s and the sudden tonal contrasts create a highly graphic balanced composition. As in Heron 's
Departure Over Te Henga, (the following lot) the edges are hard with a black outline delineati11g much of the composition and the texture of the paint flows with the forms. This work is unquestionably an icon of Binney's much acclaimed Bil·d paintings from the 1960's. $65 ,000·85 ,000

Heron 's Departure, New Spring, Te Henga oil on board signed and dated 1964 1215 x 905mm Exhibited:Auckland Art Gallery,Annual Encl ofYear Survey Show, 1964 Acquired by the present owner from the
Icon Gallery c.1964-65 This major early work depicts a stylised Heron in flight over the Otawewe Cottage (belonging to the Bethell family) at Te Henga , Bethells Beach , on Auckland's west coast. Binney produced numerous paintings using this coastline as the "backdrop ". The small structure to the left of the cottage is a 'pagoda' from which one could contemplate the ocean. Binney states that there is "a distinctly brilliant, nervous quality of light in New Zealand , one has the impression of an iron land , strong and clear in this light"• Both the land and the Heron are solid in a soft grey haze of sea and sky. *Don Bilmey, Barry Lett Galleries Newsletter,Vol.l ,

732 Gretchen Albrecht Firey Stormclouds watercolour title inscribed, signed and dated 1975 925 x 720mm $12 ,000-16 ,000 see illustration left
732
731 Gretchen Albrecht Storm Cloud at Sunset acrylic on canvas signed and dated 1976; title inscribed signed and dated 1976 1385 x 1065mm Storm Cloud at Sunset is from an important group of works painted in 1975-76 that were conceptually based on the direct experience of Auckland 's West Coast beaches. Utilising the deceptively simple approach of thinned acrylic paint poured onto raw canvas, the swirls and organic planes of colour, abstractly define the multiple experiences of these surf beaches, however, for Albrecht it is now almost a desert landscape, barren of the swin1mers and picnickers who have once again left for home leaving the beach empty and primeval. The colours are the lurid, slightly unreal hues of sunset reflected on sand , of sun bursting through distant cloud banks, of wave pattern on the black sand beach ; the resultant vision although avowedly abstract is also unexpectedly celebratory and pantheistic. These works embodying the sunsets, cloudscapes, wavescapes and light of the rugged expanses of Karekare and Pilia, also participate in a new, looser technical approach to painting that
is typified by the American artist, Helen Frankenthaler. In saying this, it is important to quickly emphasise the elemental and crucial difference that is high.lighted by Gretchen Albrecht's total commitment to the rules and formal sequences of the landscape being observed. In doing so it could be argued that this more correctly places her into that Wordsworthian, nineteenth century poetic English landscape tradition , empirically based as it was on the observation of nature, on weather patterns and the play of light; and with artists such as the Constable of the 'oil sketches' and more importantly, the Turner of the 'colour studies'. Albrecht was and is, very familiar with the 'colour studies' ofTurner, those myriad brief splashes of colour and line with which the artist sought to capture and notate the transient effects of light and water. With her 'stained canvases' of the mid-1970s, Gretchen Albrecht has in personal terms, skilfully writ her own observations of nature large and clear, and in doing so has evolved a serious body of paintings that not only directly comment on a familiar landscape and environment, but which also participate in broader, more global, painting issues. $18,000-26,000 see illustration opposite page

738 Evelyn Page Summer's Day, Oriental Parade, Wellington oil on board c.1944-45 signed 310 x 490mm She has "isolated an evocative slice of city life, but her real subject is the complex vitality in the movement and colour of the paint itself." CTanet Paul and eil Roberts, Evelyn Page, Seven Decades, Robert McDougall Art Gallery, 1986, p.37) Page's focus on the city stands contrary to the trends establised by her contemporaries of the 1940's. Most artist's painting at this time were either interested in landscapes or exploiting the relationships between rural buildings and landscape; they were
left
painting empty 'unpeopled ' landscapes where Page's focus at this time was cityscapes and nudes. In this work there is a feeling of strong sunlight, of rippling water and the bustle of Oriental Parade, with no indication of the war, which was effecting so many New Zealand families. $25 ,000-35,000 see illustration above

744 Frances Hodgkins Farm Boy at Chipping Campaen watercolour 240 x 240mm Provenance: From the estate of Cissie Kean. This work was painted during a summer sch ool held by Hodgkins in June / September 1916 at Chipping Campden , Gloucester, England, and given to her student Cissie Kean. Hodgkins held these country summer schools from 1915 "partly as a change of air ... [but] mainly to make a little money .... so she taught in order to live and , as always, lived in order to paint" (E. H. McCormick,
Portrait of Frances Hodgkins, Au ckland University Press & Oxford University Press, 1981, p.87.) Until recently, this watercolour was stored in a portfolio of the artist 's works, which accounts for its exceptional, unfaded condition. $25 ,000-30,000
