The Catalogue
2 Colin McCahon Titirangi Bush Landscape and Old Woman by the Sea two crayon drawings on one lithographic paper plate, circa 1965; each inscribed in lithographic pencil at the base with the titles and McCahon 57 Ed 100 published by Peter Webb, High St, Auckland 257 X 395mm
This plate with its two images was never printed, McCahon choosing to have published first, the Puketutu From My Boat images. Had the Puketutu prints sold, the two images here may have been published, but because there was no demand for the Puketutu prints, priced at one guinea, (a set of the four images selling recently at $6,000) it is likely that McCahon had little encouragement to proceed with any further prints. Together with another crayon drawing on lithographic paper. $1000-1600 see illustration above
1 Colin McCahon 1919-1987 Van Gogh, Poems by John Caselberg original crayon drawing on lithographic paper plate signed and dated 1965 395 x 257mm together with another drawing, an alternative for the cover of the Caselberg Poems (2) $1000-2000 see illustration above

Colin McCahon Comet (FII) 1974 oil on jute canvas title inscribed, signed and dated 1974 630 X 930mm Reference: Colin McCahon: Artist by Gordon H. Brown, Reed 1993 "In a letter to Luit Bieringa written at the time, he referred to his early religious work and said that, ' I still believe in my God, but he has changed a bit'. In a different yet not so different way, the Comet paintings register change or, more correctly, movement in time.God is here spanning time as a symbolic force, displaying greater omnipotence than
he had in the Crucifixions of 1947-50. Each set of the Comet paintings comprises three or four paintings and can be likened to a se1ies of time exposures of film, with each painting in the sequence recording the progress of the comet as it moves across the heavens .... Colin McCahon Painting from the Landscape Theme and Variations series circa 1963 oil on jute canvas 1730 x 830mm inscribed on the reverse with the capital letter H
framed North Otago Landscapes of 1967 which occupied much of the wall space of the Barry Lett Galleries, with the written Scrolls of 1969 and most notable with the two large Victory Over Death paintings of 1970 which filled the two larger walls of Barry Lett Galleries entirely" .
Provenance: First exhibited at the Ikon Gallery, Auckland in May 1963 as one of six landscape panels individually lettered C, D, F, G, H, I which accompanied two eight panel works, titled Landscape Theme and Variations: Series A and Landscape Theme and Variation: Series B. The H panel was purchased from the exhibition and re-sold through the Peter McLeavey Gallery in Wellington in 1975 to the present owners , the Les and Milly Paris Family Collection, Wellington. Between 28th April 29th May 1977 the work was exhibited at the Dowse Art Gallery exhibition titled A Private View, works from the Paris Family Collection. Then from 13th December to 7th March 1994 it was exhibited at the Hit Parade exhibition, some contemporary works from the Paris Family Collection, at the Auckland City Art Gallery.
Colin McCahon: Artist by Gordon H. Brown, Reed 1993 pp. 99 , I 00, I OJ. Referring to the series to which this painting belongs, Gordon Brown writes "The slightly impatient, emotional rashness that is part of the vitality underlying the Northland Panels is, in the Landscape Theme and Variations paintings, clarified, condensed , controlled and given greater rhythmic inter-structure and unity. Although the North/and Panels represent unspecified locations, there is an element of explicitness in the various landscapes depicted. But Landscape Theme and Variations Series A sees the land abbreviated into a form which, with concentrated precision, assesses the universal nature of the landscape. The two works may seem to act in antithesis, but in feeling, are complementary in the way they present the underlying conflict behind our attitude to the land. As a reflection of McCahon's belief they can be justly paired. With the North/and Panels there was an urgent need to establish an immediate, keenly felt response, slightly awkward and not fully enunciated in its details, which _n evertheless stated McCahon's concern as directly and persuasively as possible. Landscape Theme and Variation: Series A is more contemplative. It reflects an almost classical distillation of a few basic geographic structures that pervade the county and give form to New Zealand as a land. Its monumental simplicity is united with a deep, sympathetic, lifelong attachment to the land which as been one of the prime supports to his development as an artist; a vision that is essential for McCahon to communicate". $100,000-150,000 see illustration right
Literature: Bulletin of New Zealand Art History No 2 1974, Colin McCahon's Paintings and Drawings at the Ikon Gallery by Professor Anthony Green "Series A was hung on the left wall and Series Bon the right wall , C was hung directly opposite the door. H and /, McCahon noted , were a pair. These and panels D, F and G were on the fire-place wall. The series hung edge to edge and fitted the walls almost exactly. They were hung about eight inches from the floor and the top of them would have been above the hanging rail of the gallery, but would have been 4' 5" below the ceiling. They were intended to form a complete painted "environment". In this respect they follow the attempt to do the same thing with The Wake. In this case, however, they were designed specifically for the space in which they were to hung. This effect was attempted again later with the

16 Colin McCahon Sketch for the International Air Race 1953 oil on board 280 X 515mm
t-lth 1%9
Provenance: During 1952, the artist recieved a commission from Tasman Empire Airways Ltd for a large painting to commemorate the London to Christchurch air race due to take place in October 1953. McCahon produced several studies for the subject, all titled Sketch for Teal. These were shown in the 1953 Group Show exhibition in Christchurch together with Comet and the main International Air Race painting.
Mr Allender noted at the time that " ... the painting (International Air Race) had excited little public or art world interest. McCahon was virtually unknown and the painting was thought incomprehensible". International Air Race was subsequently lost, and was presumed "... thrown out with outdated publicity material..." some years after Mr Allender had left the airline.
This study was not included in the Group Show exhibition as it had already been gifted to Mr Robert Allender, Sydney, the who was the publicity manager for the airline and the officer responsible for the commission.
Reference: The International Air Race painting is illustrated on p.50 Colin McCahon: Artist by Gordon H. Brown, Reed 1993. $12,000-18,000 see illustration above

142 Stephen Watkins 1830-1894 A View of Akaroa and Harbour with a Cottage and Figures in the Foreground oil on canvas 400 x 600mm Stephen Watkins arrived in Akaroa in 1860, joining his family who preceded him, acquiring a farm in 1850 under the Wakefield Settlement Scheme. He taught art at Dr Barker's School for Gentleboys at French Farm, Akaroa, and he took part in many of the settlements civic and social affairs. It is quite likely that some of his views of Akaroa have been attributed to his better known brother, William Montague Watkins, as he is recorded as having frequently left his paintings unsigned. $1600-2500
