28 Girolamo Pieri Ballati Nerli - Italian, worked and taught in New Zealand 1863-1926 Lady with Mandolin oil on canvas signed 505 x 230mm Provenance: This painting probably arrived with Nerli on his first visit to New Zealand in 1889, although the stretcher has an original label of the Dunedin rut supplier and framer Jos Abernethy. The style seems to be contemporary with the so-called Bacchanalian orgy series dated between 1887-89. It is chru·acterized here by the subtle tone of the background greys and the dancer herself appearing out of nowhere to descend the staircase. $12,000-16,000 see illustration right

31 Colin McCahon The Artist's Garden, Titirangi watercolour signed and dated 1953 635 x 505mm Provenance: A gift from McCahon , he writes on the back Freda - This is the last of the Titirangi things apart from the one I keep. A watercolour -but treated on the back with formalin and P.V.A as a seal and on the front formalin only. This backing board is P.V.A and formalin on both sides too - so - when you see the little brown spots don 't get too anxious. When you see the others eaten out by fungus spots don ' t get too anxious either - this should be one of the most sterile paintings in N.Z. If too steri le please say so and I will substitute another (less so). C. Greetings. (The subject is our Titirangi back garden.) $30,000-40,000 see illustration

44 James Peele 1846/7-1905 The Westland Crossing the Bar oil on canvas signed and dated 1890 750 X 1205mm The Paddle steamer Westland, (official No.69017) was built by Edward Seager (1885) in Wellington to the account of Maurice O'Connor of Greymouth, Sawmiller and his two partners, Martin Kennedy and Felix Campbell, both timber merchants of the same town. Westland was employed exclusively in her early years transporting timber, mainly native Westland Silver Pine from Hokitika, (where the three
expatriate Irishmen owned and operated a sawmill), to Greymouth, for transhipping in larger sailing schooners. Silver Pine was keenly sought for wharf and bridge building, railway sleepers and telegraph poles. Export across the Tasman was not uncommon until virtually cut out. The stoic paddle steamer was eventually disposed of to the Grey mouth Harbour Board who utilized the vessel on similar tasks to her original owners including the transport of native timbers from South Westland and regular towage associated with bar ports. The Westland was broken up in 1948. $20,000-35 ,000 see illustration
