Conditions of Sale

1. The highest bidder to the purchaser, subject to the Auctioneers having a right to refuse the bidding of any person Should any dispute arise as to the biddings, the lot in dispute to be immediately put up for sale again at the preceding bidding, or the Auctioneers may declare the purchaser.

2. No person shall advance less at a bid than a sum to be nominated by the Auctioneer and no bid shall be retracted.

3. All lots are sold subject to the right of the seller or his agent to bid or else to impose a reserve.

4. The purchaser to give his name, address and to pay down 10 per cent of the purchase money in part payment thereof. In default of any of which matters the lot or lots purchased may be immediately put up again and resold.

5 . All lots are sold as shown and with all faults, imperfections, and errors to description. The Auctioneers act as agents, they have full discretion to refuse any bidding or to withdraw any lot or lots from the sale without in either case giving any reason, neither they nor the Vendor are responsible for errors of description or for genuineness or authenticity of any lot or fault or defect in it, and make no warranty whatever.

6 The lots are at the buyer's risk from the fall of the hammer and are to be taken away at the buyer's expense, in default of which the Auctioneers will not hold themselves responsible, if the same are lost, stolen, damaged, or otherwise destroyed, but they will be left at the sole risk of the purchaser. If the lots are not cleared or paid for, they may then be sold immediately either publicly or by private treaty, without any notice being given to the defaulter.

7. Upon failure of the purchaser to comply with any of the above conditions the money deposited in part payments shall be forfeited, and the defaulter shall make good any loss arising from the resale, together withthe charges and expenses in respect of both sales.

8. No goods are to be removed while selling is in progress. Receipted invoices must be produced prior to delivery of any lot. The auctioneers reserve the right to request identification in the case of any purchaser not known to the Auctioneer who pays by cheque Charging to credit cards will not be accepted as means of payment.

Instruction to Bid

Instructions to bid at sales are accepted by Peter Webb Galleries Limited and carried out free of charge. Lots will be bought as favo1.1rably as is allowed by the bidding in the saleroom and any reserve imposed.

AUCTIONEER'S NOTES AND GENERAL CONDITIONS PERTAINING TO THIS SALE

1. Intending bidders are requested to register with the auctioneers and to obtain a bidding number prior to the auction.

2. Persons unable to attend the auction but wishing to bid may leave a bid in writing on any lots with the Auctioneers who will bid on their behalf. The auctioneer will bid on the lot in normal rises as he shall determine and it may well be that the lot be purchased for less than the written bid

3. All bidders should be aware that they are bidding on a " buyer beware " and " as is where is" basis and that refunds will not be made in the event of the wine not meeting what the buyer considers to be a proper standard. Bidders should be aware;

(a) That all risks relating to the goods for sale are theirs from the fall of the hammer ;

(b) That there is a risk of spoilage in buying wine;

(c) That the comments made with respect to various lots in the catalogue are statements of opinions only. Buyers should make their decision to bid acting solely upon their own knowledge and experience

4. The conditions of sale require that payment be made by cash or cheque (the auctioneer reserves the right to refuse any cheque tendered) on the night of the Auction and the clearance and removal of purchased goods is the sole responsibility of the buyer.

5 A price estimate follows each entry . These estimates do not necessarily correspond with any reserve prices and are provided for the guidance only of bidders. As very few of the lots offered can be purchased from a New Zealand merchant it is difficult for bidders to obtain a value reference The estimates are worked out as far as possible from the results of recent overseas auctions taking into account New Zealand exchange rates , duty and freight. Many of the lots are in fact international commodities with reasonably well known international values and bidders are invited to undertake their own research in this area.

6 . This sale is subject to the conditions of sale printed on the opposite page.

IMPORTANT NOTE

All estimates in this catalogue relate to a price per bottle , irrespective of the number of bottles per lot.

INTRODUCTION

Auction houses are progressively becoming an important feature of the fine wine trade in New Zealand, functioning as both outlets and analysts for fine and rare wines which have disappeared from the merchant's list.

Increasingly, and this particularly since the last wine auction held at Webb's in 1986, the saleroom prices have served not only as guidelines for buyers but also as barometers for the licensed trade, offering spontaneous and realistic appraisals of the market.

The benefits to be derived from bidding at a wine auction are numerous and extremely favourable, both to the trade and to the private wine buyer ; here lies the opportunity to acquire fabulous and prestigious bottles that have long been out of circulation, and by the same token the chance to purchase young wines for extended cellaring or as an investment.

Red Bordeaux is the mainstay of any auction house. The reasons for this pre-eminence are straight forward: it is recognised the world over as the greatest red wine, and the longest lived; it is in great supply and it is wine that has shown the most dramatic increases in price - it is a valuable tender, from Christie's or Sotheby's in London to Webb's in Auckland wine is recognised as international currency.

The value of mature claret has increased rapidly over the last four years, partly because of the strength of international currency, particularly the U.S. Dollar, and partly because of the increased interest in fine wine throughout the world. Greater availability of these wines has exposed many to the intricacies and variations within this region (and indeed throughout the world) and has enhanced the wine lover's desire to experience the different sensation that rests within each bottle.

The white wine of Bordeaux, as well as the reds and whites of Burgundy are also the focus of a long awaited escalation in value. To the keen investor, these wines should prove particularly attractive.

The 1982 Chateau Petrus has seen a rise in value of over 800% since its initial release and this shows no signs of faltering. Pauillac superstars Mouton-Rothschild, Latour and Lafite-Rothschild the blue chip wines of the Graves, St-Emilion and Margaux have soared by up to 550% with the 1982 vintage. New Zealand high flyers such as Te Mata Coleraine and Awatea , the Goldwater Estate Cabernets and the Black Label wines of Morton Estate are all likely to attract high prices, reflecting a growing interest within New Zealand for premium local wine. The Antipodean from Matakana, already dubbed as "the new Chateau Lafite" will undoubtedly be the focal point for some exciting and ferocious bidding. The catalogue for this, the third wine sale at Webb's offers you the largest and by far the most valuable selection of international wines ever to appear at auction in this country.

NEW ZEALAND WINES

THE ANTIPODEAN

Lot 575 1985 the first historic vintage of The Antipodean. In the UK before a panel of Masters of Wine (MW), Trade Leaders and Connoisseurs, The Antipodean was placed sixth overall in a tasting of the world's twenty greatest reds, being placed ahead of Petrus 1982 and Marg a ux 1983. This stunning wine, a great blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, is produced in microscopic quantities by two Auckland lawyers. Only 20 Rehoboams are released each year. This wine is more than a collectors piece-it marks a turning point in New Zealand winemaking history.
