A GUIDE FOR BUYERS Webb's have set out the following information for the benefit of first time buyers and those who are unfamiliar w ith auction procedures. Important note: Please refer to full conditions of sale for buyers printed in the reverse of this catalogue and displayed in the saleroom.
Registration A ll intending buyers must comp lete a bidding form avai lab le from the reception desk.
Buying at Auction 1. Floor Bidders
Ensure that you have registered and obtained a buyer number before bidd ing on the lot or lots you have chosen. Be aware that a buyer's premium of 12.5% + GST on the prem ium, a total of 14.06%, is payab le by all buyers in add ition to the hammer price. At some sa les the amou nt of the buyers' premium may be more or less than 10% . Please make su re that you are aware of the amount of the buyer's premium. Make your bids clea r, preferably by ho lding up your buyer number ca rd. If you make a mistake e.g. the auctioneer takes a bid from you at a hi gher level than you had intended, or you rea li se that you had bid on the wrong lot, ca ll out to the auctioneer immediately so that the bidding can be adjusted. Waiting unti l after the hammer fa l Is is too late. If your bid is the hi ghest and the lot is knocked down to you then you have entered a binding ob li gation to pay for that lot. 2. Sales Subject to Vendor's Consent
Where your bid is the hi ghest, but still below the reserve, the Auction eer may declare you to be the "buyer subject to Vendor's consent". This means that your bid is held as binding and w ill be com muni cated to the Vend or at the ea rli est opportunity. If the vendor accepts then there is a contractu al ob ligation for you to pay for the lot. If the vendor does not accept, you are released from any obligation, however you wi ll have first right to negotiate w ith the ven dor through Webb's until an agreement is reached, and Webb's will not present other offers to the vendor until your negotiations are ended. 3. Absentee Bids
Webb's w ill endeavour to ensure that your bidding in stru ctions are executed, but accept no respo nsibility or liability for fa ilure to do so. Lots wi ll be bought as favourab ly as is all owed by bidding in the sale room and any reserve imposed by the vendor. Please note that Webb's cannot guaran tee that another bidder w ill not be successfu l at your limit if, in the course of competitive bidding, someone else bids your limit first. Absentee bids are accepted by w ritten instruction which can be sent by fax (e-mai led absentee bids are not accepted) up to I hour before the commencement of the sale. Absentee bids wi ll be executed on the fo llowing basis: If your bid limit is equa l to or above a reserve, the Aucti oneer may open the bidding at reserve on your behalf and w ill bid thereafter onl y in response to competition for the lot. If your bid limit is below a reserve, the Auctioneer may open the bidding at your limit and if there are no further bids in the room
may se ll to you "subject to vendor's consent". In the absence of a reserve the Auctioneer may exercise your bid in advance of any openin g bid-or may open the bidding on your behalf at the Auctioneers estimate, at the Auctioneer's sole discretion.
Telephone Bids The same cond itions as above app ly to telephone bidders. Webb's wi ll telephone the number you have given several minutes before the lot you have request comes up for sa le. If your phone is engaged or we are unable to make contact the auction w ill proceed without your bidding. Ou r staff w ill ask you to hold when we have made contact. They wi ll then te ll you that your lot is about to come up. The bids wi ll be relayed to you and you can en ter the bidding at any time by making your cal l. Please note that the bidding at many auctions can be fast and furi ous. The auctioneer w ill not favour a phone bidder over and above buyers who are attend ing the auction by givin g them more time to bid. You wi ll need to establish you r lim it and make sure that you bid clearly and promptly. Telephone bids are only accepted for cata logued sales and on items with estimates over $500.
Pre-Sale Estimates Estimates printed in the catalogue or given verba ll y are intended as a gui de only and can be subject to revision nearer to the time of a sa le. Webb's staff are ava il ab le during pre-sa le viewi ng times and by appo intment to assist prospective bidders with estim ates and any aspect of the auction procedure.
Condition Reports Webb's staff w ill provide co nditi on reports for out of Auck land buyers. However, please note that no 6 in the Co nditions of Sale for Buyers wi ll stil l apply despite the obtai ning of a condition report.
Payment Payment for al l items purchased is due on the day of sa le immediately following comp letion of the sa le. If full payment can not be made on the day of sale a deposit of 10% of the total sum due must be made on the day of sa le and the bal ance must be paid w ithin 5 wo rking days. Payment is by cas h, bank cheq ue or Eftpos. Chequ es w ill be accepted but mu st be cleared before delivery of goods will be given. Cred it ca rd s are not accepted.
Packing and Freight Webb's do not pack goods in house. However, we will arrange for your items to be packed, insured and shipped by a professional agent. A ll costs associated w ith packing and freight are payable by the purchaser.
Valuation Service Webb's provide free market appraisa ls on Monday mornings from 9am - 1pm or at other times by appointment. Webb's apprai sers wi ll come to your home to v iew an d appra ise larger items. Webb's wi ll provide va lu ations for insurance, matrimonial division, family division etc. Please enqu ire at reception for charges. Va lu ation charges are refundable on occasion when goods are subseq uently offered for sa le w ithin a reasonabl e period.
DESIGN SINCE 1930 Welcome to Webb's first major catalogue in this excItIng new genre of collectibles and furniture. The April 28th 2004 Auction will be the fourth of its type in the last two years and this is testimony to the rapidly growing interest in modern design, graphics, glass and ceramics. The growth of apartment living is a contributory factor in the explosion of interest in Design since 1930 as is the sense that in New Zealand some pioneering designers such as Garth Chester and John Chrichton were participating in the global discourse as far back as the 1940s. WEBB'S INVITES YOU TO A FREE PRESENTATION BY ONE OF NEW ZEALAND'S FOREMOST AUTHORITIES ON MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGN. Douglas Lloyd Jenkins, is an acknowledged expert in this area and his regular curated exhibitions, articles and published works have revealed in recent years just how actively modern design was created and appreciated in New Zealand in the immediate pre and post war years, long before today's design savvy collectors began searching for a genuine Eames piece. We are delighted to announce that Douglas will be giving a free presentation on Sunday the 25th at 5.00 pm at Webb's in which he will discuss the context of some of the important pieces in the sale and give some insight into the New Zealand practitioners of the period. Don't miss Webb's Floortalk by Douglas Lloyd Jenkins, Associate Professor, School of Design, Unitec and author of a soon to be published 20th century guide to the architecture and furnishing of the New Zealand house.
Time: 5.00 to 6.00 pm Sunday the 25th of April. Location: Webb's Auction rooms 18 Manukau Road, Newmarket.
