END OF SALE

NZ LISTENER, FEBRUARY 9, 1985

The atmosphere generated by a room full of lace is calm and romantic, reminiscent of Georgette Heyer, or if you prefer, George Eliot. The names of the types of lace - Carrickmacross, Alencon, Chantilly, Hontion, Valenciennessummon up visions of a civilised Europe, full of skilled women working quietly to produce objects of great beauty. But this romantic image is fallacious. The few beautiful fragments on display are the remnants of a huge, exploitive and wasteful industry, perhaps the most blatant example of conspicuous consumption in western Europe. Women worked long, painstaking hours, straining their eyes and frequently ruining their health, to produce the exquisite and absolutely useless end product. Lace encapsulates the very worst aspects of a hierarchical, patriarchal and capitalistic society. For

mere decoration, the very rich display on their persons the results of enormous labour by the poor. Lacemakers were generally women, which may explain why so skilled a craft has afforded its makers so little respect. The glorious artefacts were the product not just of the poor, but of poor women; the lowest of all in the scales of respect. But their handiwork was worn by the richest and highest ot all, women and men.

And was it all worth while? The labour was so great and the remnants are so few and so flimsy. I suppose the answer must be yes, since the vast mass of human labour leaves no mark at all behind it. The traces left by the unfortunate lacemakE>rs are at least beautiful; it depends, presumably, on the human price you are prepared to pay for things of beauty.
