CONTEMPORARY & HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHY The desire to collect photography has been around for as long as the medium itself. From the outset the notion that a person, a place or an event could be captured with such immediacy and realism was astounding. In his book Into the
Light, a History of New Zealand Photography, David Eggleton explores the rise of photography in New Zealand from its infancy. It is serendipitous that the evolution of photography so closely matched our own as a nation. The exploration of our country in the early 1800s by the British caught aflame the imagination of Victorians living in what was then a society constrained by rigid class structure. Suffocating for many, the only escape was out, far beyond their ordered existence and the crush of population. Anything unknown was seized upon as exotic, its otherness was romantic. Certainly the fastest and most compelling way to disseminate this type of information to an audience hungry for newness was photography. As Eggleton notes, photographers working in New Zealand used the medium as a form of exploration, a visual recording of a nation humming with migrant energy. Separated by over 100 years, the works of Arthur lies, Brian Brake and Fiona Pardington all depict Maori subjects and taonga. Arthur lies staged Maori in the familiar portraiture style of the day; dressed in their finery, full facial moko, cloaks

and accoutrements. Some examples in the catalogue are hand coloured, adding a sense of unreality. For the modern viewer these studio portraits demonstrate the often exploitative feel of this genre. In comparison Brian Brake's two large scale

Body of Christ in 12 Parts The first work in the edition of three was printed in Auckland and exhibited in 2000 at the 5th Biennale d'Arts Contemporain de Lyon, Lyon France with the title The Body of Christ in 12 Parts. Commissioned in 1999, by Jean Hubert Martin, t he guest curator of the biennale, it was used as the main promotional image for this event in publications including Le Monde, La Parisien, The Wall Street Journal and the International Herald Tribune. Due to its controversial nature, several European newspapers refused to publish the image. This first work was donated to the Musee des Arts Contemporain Lyon, France. The second work in the edition was commissioned by the on-line art price database artprice.com, the premier sponsor of the 4th Paris Photo Salon for Photography, Carousel du Louvre, Paris in 2000. This commission, printed in Paris, was re-worked by adding text in oil pastel and was renamed Redemption. Under this new title it was employed as the promotional image for 4th Paris Photo 2000. It was also published on the back cover of Vernisage

Brian Brake (1927-1988) Without doubt Brian Brake (1927-1988) is a foremost figure in 20th Century New Zealand Photography. He is one of a small handful of New Zealand born photographers to gain International recognition during his lifetime. Surprisingly his photography and photographic development in this country is little realised. At the age of twenty Brake became an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain. In 1945 Brake commenced work with Spencer Digby in Wellington, a leading Portrait Photographer. He later joined the New Zealand National Film Unit where he produced a number of black and white documentaries including "Snows of Aorangi" (1950). In 1953 Brake left New Zealand and made London his base
