Most of the items come from Zhejia11g. Zhejia11g, with its 11eighbouring province of Jiangzn is located in the most fertile and productive area of China. The region attracted a great number of intellectuals, artists and retired court officials. Co11Sequently arts and crafts flourished in the area ll1e references to the style of North and South China are applied by using the Yanzi River as a rough divider. Northerners probably influenced by the openess of the land tend to be more open and simple in style which reflects in their furniture. In contrast, in the more densely populated South the furniture is generally smaller in size and carries more decoration. 1l1e Kang is a raised platform built with rocks and clay. In the North it functioned both as living and sleeping quarters for the whole family especially in winter. Preheated rocks kept in a fire during the day were brought in and placed under the Kang for warnllh. Kang furniture is generally low off the ground. 1 Book Box in muhe wood.
