A Guide for Buyers Webb's have set out the fol lowing information for the benefit of first time buyers and those who are unfamiliar w ith auction procedures. Important note: Please refer to full conditions of sale for buyers printed in the reverse of this catalogue and displayed in the saleroom. Registration A ll intend ing buyers must comp lete a bidding form ava il able from the reception desk Buying at Auction 1. Floor Bidders Ensure that you have registered and obta ined a buyer number before bidding on the lot or lots you have chosen Be aware that a buyer's premium of 10%+GST on the premium, a tota l of 11.25%, is payable by all buyers in addition to the hammer price. At some sales the amount of the buyers' premium may be more or less than 10% . Please make sure that you are aware of the amount of the buyer's premium. Make your bids clear, preferably by holding up your buyer number card. If you make a mistake e.g. the auctioneer takes a bid from you at a higher level than you had intended, or you realise that you had bid on the w rong lot, ca ll out to the auctioneer immediately so that the bidding can be adjusted. Waiting until after the hammer fa ll s is too late. If your bid is the highest and the lot is knocked down to you then you have entered a bind ing obligation to pay for that lot. 2. Sales Subject to Vendor's Consent Where your bid is the highest, but still below the reserve, the Auctioneer may declare you to be the "buyer subject to Vendor's consent". This means that your bid is held as bind ing and w ill be communicated to the Vendor at the earl iest opportunity. If the vendor accepts then there is a contractua l obligation for you to pay for the lot. If the vendo r does not accept, you are re leased from any obl igation, however you w ill have first right to negotiate w ith the vendor through Webb's until an agreement is reached , and Webb's will not present other offers to the vendor until your negotiations are ended. 3. Absentee Bids Webb's w ill endeavour to ensure that you r bidding instru ctions are executed, but accept no responsibil ity or li abil ity for fai lure to do so. Lots will be bought as favourably as is al lowed by bidding in the sale room and any reserve imposed by the vendor. Please note that Webb's cannot guarantee that another bidder wil l not be successful at your limit if, in the course of compet iti ve bidding, someone else bids your li mit first. Absentee bids are accepted by written instruction which can be sent by fax {e-mailed absentee bids are not accepted) up to I hour before the commencement of the sale.
Absentee bids w ill be executed on the following basis: If you r bid limit is equa l to or above a reserve, the Auctioneer may open the bidding at reserve on your behalf and wi ll bid thereafter only in response to competition for the lot. If your bid lim it is below a reserve, the Auctioneer may open the bidd ing at your limit and if there are no further bids in the room may sel l to you "subject to vendor's consent" .
In the absence of a reserve the Auctioneer may exercise your bid in advance of any open ing bid or may open the bidding on your behalf at the Auct ioneers estimate, at the Auct io neer's sole discretion. Telephone Bids The same conditions as above app ly to telephone bidders. Webb's w ill telephone the number you have given severa l minutes before the lot you have request comes up fo r sale. If yo ur phone is engaged or we are unable to make contact the auction wi ll proceed without your bidding. Our staff wi ll ask you to hold when we have made contact. They wi ll then te ll you that your lot is about to come up. The bids w ill be relayed to you and you can enter the bidding at any time by making you r cal l. Please note that the bidding at many auctions can be fast and furious. The auctioneer wi ll not favour a phone bidder over and above buyers who are attending the auction by giving them more time to bid. You w ill need to estab lish your limi t and make sure that you bid clea rly and promptly. Telephone bids are only accepted for cata logued sales and on items w ith estimates over $500 . Pre-Sale Estimates Estimates printed in the catalogue or given verba ll y are intended as a gu ide on ly and can be subject to revision nearer to the time of a sa le. Webb's staff are avai lable during pre-sale viewi ng times and by appointment to assist prospective bidders w ith estimates and any aspect of the auction procedure. Condition Reports Webb's staff wi ll provide cond ition reports for out of Auckland buyers. However, please note that no 6 in the Conditions of Sa le for Buyers wil l sti ll apply despite the obta ining of a condition report. Payment Payment for all items purchased is due on the day of sa le immediately fol lowing comp letion of the sa le. If full payment cannot be made on the day of sa le a deposit of 10% of the total sum due must be made on the day of sa le and the ba lance must be paid within 5 working days. Payment is by cash, bank cheque or Eftpos. Cheques wi ll be accepted but must be cleared before deli very of goods wil l be given. Credit cards are not accepted. Packing and Freight Webb's do not pack goods in house. However, we w ill arrange for you r items to be packed, insured and sh ipped by a professional agent. All costs associated with packing and freight are payable by the purchaser. Valuation Service Webb's provide free market appraisa ls on Monday mornings from 9am-1 pm or at other times by appointment. Webb's appra isers wi ll come to your home to view and appraise larger items.
Webb's w ill provide valuations for insurance, matrimonial division, fami ly division etc. Please enquire at reception for cha rges. Va luation charges are refundable on occasion when goods are subsequently offered for sale within a reasonable period.

GEORGIAN GLASS In the late 1 i h century, table glass was imported into England from the continent at extraord inary cost. George Ravenscroft, a chem ist, was engaged by the Glass Sellers' Company to discover the secret of making clear fine glass and start an indi genous industry. He discovered the introduction of lead oxide produced glass of weight, cl arity, so lidity and a lu stre qu ite different to soda glass . Granted a 7year patent Ravensc roft died in 1681 , a few days after hi s patent ran out and hi s process was quickly adopted by many other glasshouses. Over time material and techniques were improved and refi ned. During the 18th century, the artist-craftsmen's ski lls were appli ed to the new glass industry, producing a series of styles described below and some exam pl es of w hich are for auction. The 1745 Excise Act imposed a levy of ld per pound weight on the glass making materi al proving to be a burden on the industry. Further taxes, imposed by 1820 had risen to 10d per lb. They were abo li shed in 1845 but caused many glassmakers to move to Ireland to avo id them and found the Iri sh G lass indu stry. Some Characteristics of Georgian Glass Between 1675 and 1825, all glasses were hand-b lown, although some moulding techn iques were used in sweetmeat glasses. Glasses were made in three parts, the foot, stem and bowl. The excepti on was the draw n trumpet where the stem and bowl were made from the sa me gatherin g of metal. Other characteri sti cs include evidence of hand-blow ing: striation s, indentations and the ponti l mark, although thi s cou ld in later glass be po lished out. Earl y Balusters 1685 - 1725. One sty le that dom inated the ea rly 18 th century was the heavy baluster. The bowl of conica l or funnel shape w ith a so lid base (a bell bow l is sometimes seen), the stem of a single heavy knop or a comb ination of heavy knops. The term baluster was architectural reference, w hich was followed in many stems, usually in the inverted version. One chara cteristic of ea rl y ba lusters was the folded foot. Thi s reinforced aga inst chipping and stopped the pontil mark from scratching the table. Usually it was slightly raised w ith a domed foot a variant. Early balu sters are hard to find, no exa mpl es are offered in this auction. Balustriods and Plain Stems 1725 - 1750. As glass was often sold by weight and beca use of demand, inev itab ly drinking glasses became lighter and knops less substantial. Ba lustroid refers to slimmer ba luster stems, w hi ch characteri sed this group. The bowl shapes continu ed; trumpet, round funnel and bel l bowls predominate w ith the ogee beginn ing to make an appea rance. Lightening of the stems was gradu al. Plain Stems and H ollow Stems. 1730 -1760 For economic reasons the plain stem evolved and although the lack of distinguishing characteri stics make them difficult to date, the presence of folded foot suggests 1730 to 1740. Once considered the poor cousins, that has changed w ith examp les offering the co llector a variety of type and shape. The tea r in the stem was an interesting va riant as well as a folded or domed foot. Seen w ith most varieties of bowl, the bucket bowl was more popular after 175 0. The cordial, ra tafi a and hollow stems are rare. The later believed to be deve loped to avo id the 1745 Exc ise Act. Air Tw ists 1745 - 1770 The elega nce of the air twist is a combination of nature's cheapest commodity and craftsmanship. The air tear (from two to twelve) was introduced into a squat cyl inder of glass, heated, drawn out and twisted. Thi s pattern of fil aments of air lay ju st below the surface of the glass. Two tears ca n be made to produce a fl attened mercury twist, so named because of the way it refl ects light. Twelve evenl y
produced fi laments are more common and form w hat is ca lled a multiple-spiral air twist. The use of knops w ith an ai r twist is also seen wi th the tw ist less tight but very ski lfully contro lled. Variants exist w ith the four types of bow l, but few wi th a fo lded foot. The Cotton or Opaque Twists 1755 -1785 The progression of air twists to cotton or more correctly opaque twists ca n be seen w ith examination of examp les in today's co llections. Rods of opaque w hite glass were placed verti ca ll y round the mould and clear glass poured in . On drawing out and tw isting a long rod was produced w ith thin fil aments of w hite glass in the pattern required. This cou ld be cut to length for stems or stored for later use. A huge va ri ety of designs were emp loyed. At least eighty designs are record ed. All bowl types were used, w ith the ogee predominating, knops were uncommon. Twist varia nts include: Doubl e Seri es Opaq ue Twi st (DSOT), Single Series Opaque Tw ist (SSOT), Multiple Seri es Opaq ue Twist (M SOT) like the air twist, and often the use of rods very closely together to give the effect of spi ral gauzes or lace. Rare comb ination air and opaque twists exist and are know n as mixed twists. Co loured glass was not a characteri stic of this period, however examples ex ist in green or blue prior to 1790, however the introdu ction of coloured rods instead of or in combination w ith opaque rods did occur althou gh not in great quantity. O ne such examp le is offered in this auction.

Facet Stems 1780 - 1825
G lass cutting and engravi ng in 18 th century Eng land was tedious and labour intensive, however the glass industry was aided by the introduction of the steam engine. By 1790, suites of cut table glass and chandeliers had become extreme ly fashionable. Drink ing glasses followed su it, made wi th plain stems and knops then cut and polished into a pattern of facets. Types of facets used were hexagonal and diamond, w ith less demanding verti ca l flutes com ing later and continuing into the 19'h century. Also occurring because of cheap power was the po li shing out of the pontil mark leading to the characteri stic fl at foot of thi s peri od. Rudimentary Stems. The chara cteri stic of this type; a very short stem, is diffi cu lt to date as their use continued throu ghout the entire 18" century. Dwarf ales, both wrythen or engraved barley and hops, were used extensive ly. Of about 4 fl ozs capaci ty they held extremely strong liquor; barley wine (hops and barley engraved), strong cider or home made wine. In addition to drinking glasses were a large body of jelly glasses, sweetm eats and sa lts. Many va rieties exist w ith pan-topped, honeycom b-moulded bowls, single knop or co llar as stem and domed, pl ain sq uare or moulded " lemon squeezer" footed.
The above guide is bri ef and far from extens ive. Excellent books are obtainab le, some listed below. No mention has been made of ename ll ed and engraved var iants, suc h as th e "Jacobi te" o r "W il l iamite" glasses. Georgian glass has a fascination and desirabli li ty to the co llector w ho wa nts something different. The arti stry and cra ftsmanship of the period is refl ected in so many ways, yet often out of the reach of many. A single Georgian glass afford s us that co nnection; to hold a unique piece that is around 250 years old, craftsman made, created out of hot "meta l", drunk out of by cou ntless others, a thing of beauty. The Tek Sing was a Chinese fat bel li ed junk who sank with her cargo of over 300000 pieces of porce lain in the South China Sea in 1822, along with over 1500 people on board. 95 were saved. The junk was sa lvaged by Captain Michael Hatcher, renowned for his previous sa lvage of the Nanking Treasure. The history of the Chinese porcelain trade in the early 19th century; the story of the rescue of some of the wreak's passengers and crew, along with the background to the red iscovery and sa lvage operations on the vesse l are recounted in
The Legacy of The Tek Sing, China'sTitanic -it's Tragedy and its Treasure written by Hatcher and the researcher Nigel Pickford and in the video of the Tek Sing story : The Treasure Hunter. Both these pub lications are offered in subsequent lots foll owing the porcelain below, along with cop ies of a German auction house descriptive catalogue of the treasure that was assoc iated with the original and complete sale of it.
