Also among their circle of friends were Marti and Gerrard Friedlander, and when a photo was needed to illustrate an article in the Listener about a radio talk by Neil, Marti took a portfolio of photographs, starting Neil's interest in photography as an art form. In the late 1960s, they moved to the city to start second careers as social worker and librarian, and began to col lect art in earnest. In 1970-1971, Neil spent two years in Wellington studying for his Diploma of Social Work, and frequenting the Wellington art galleries. On secondment at Mana College, Neil met art teacher Robin White, starting a lifelong interest in her works.

Mount Eden/ Maungawhau was where Jean grew up and where Neil lived in his late teenage years. It was here that they settled after two decades of farming in West Auckland. As well as collecting any works that portrayed the mountain and the village, Neil and Jean were active in Friends of Maungawhau and other events or organisations that promoted the preservation of the mountain and its environment. They were regular supporters of the annual "Artists in Eden" event, and owned a number of works connected with this, a prime example of which is Mary McIntyre's portrait of Don Binney at work. As committed pacifists and anti-war activists, Neil and Jean supported artists exploring these themes and collected posters advertising events connected with these causes. They were also committed to urban preservation, both of their local Maungawhau and of the citv fabric. Neil's career as a social worker had convinced him of the need for Aotearoa/ New Zealand to move forward on biculturalism, and similarly collected many works connected with this. Neil and Jean belonged to many groups promoting social justice, and a number of works were purchased at fundraising auctions for these causes. In the 1990s Neil's interest in photography grew, particularly the works of Taranaki-born Fiona Clark, but also Ans Westra and their Mount Eden neighbour Gil Hanly. He also acquired some older works by the Burton

Brothers and George Chance , particularly those which reflected his childhood environment of Dunedin. Neil and Jean 's move to a more elder-friendly house in 1995 posed a problem, in the form of a shortage of wall space to display their beloved art. Gradually

Soon after his arrival in Auckland in 1855, John Kinder began to make sketches of

Like many educated Victorians, Kinder had an amateur interest in geology and was attracted to the volcanic cones that were such a feature of the Auckland isthmus. He made a series of topographical views that depict the major volcanic cones such as Mt Eden, Three Kings and One Tree Hill. He shows particular

attention to the contours and forms of the cones which are drawn with an analytic

eye. He made a number of views of Mt Eden from the Auckland Domain after he had set up residence in the Master's House in Ayr Street, Parnell, in 1857. It was a short walk from his house to the Domain and he could carry his sketch block and sketching stool to a suitable vantage point. Kinder always aimed for topographical exactitude, as is seen in this example with its precise attention to the silhouette of the cone of Mt Eden and its relationship to the surrounding landscape. This makes his sketches invaluable historic records as well as artworks of high merit. Frequently when working on the spot he did not use colour, even though he is best known for highly finished watercolours. Instead he developed his watercolours in the studio from sketches such as this, often many years later though in this case it is his only known version of the subject. The sketch once formed part of an album that survived largely intact until 1984 when it was dismantled and the individual studies sold. All the views were of early Auckland. In this sketch Kinder has not bothered with landscape conventions of the period instead he has given an open, unaffected quality to his view which seems full of light and atmosphere rendered by his sensitive pen-strokes and range of tone. At this time there were relatively few European buildings intruding on the landscape but Kinder has included the stockade, in the vicinity of Mt Eden Gaol, and a nearby house. He had an interest in the settlement of the city and was well aware of his own contribution to its educational and religious life as an influential school-teacher and Anglican minister. Sketches such as this provide a unique record of Auckland in its early years by one of its founding fathers.

Magnolias in Spring are some of the most magnificent flowers to see in bloom. Trees wholly ablaze in pink or white tulip-like flowers seem to dwarf other new season blossoms and in this oil painting Rita Angus acknowledges the magnolia tree's splendour. Here a single branch reaching across the painting all but obliterates the graveyard macrocarpa as the magnolia conglomerate, hovering above the crooked bough which cuts through the painting and bisects the cemetery like an arterial route. The Bolton Street Cemetery in the suburb of Thorndon, Wellington was visible from the cottage at 194A Sydney Street West in which Angus lived from the mid 1950's until her death in January 1970. The cemetery was established in 1841 , but interments were closed in 1892. For Angus the place held a special significance. She responded to the site's poetic qualities, to its wild profusion of plant life both native and introduced, which grew in abundance about the graves of the city's early settlers. When Angus learnt of the plans to divide her neighbourhood and the cemetery by a motorway she was outraged and dismayed. In her paintings from the 1960's she protested the scheme vehemently. The well-known work Flight, 1968-69, Collection of Te Papa Tongarewa , shows the dove of peace - taken from a sketch of a demolished headstone - hovering mid-flight above the cemetery. Though Flight suggests a resignation to, and memorialisation of the Bolton Street demolition, in an earlier Self-portrait, 1966, also in the Collection of Te Papa Tongarewa, the artist depicts herself as a warrior woman standing in front of the moonlit cemetery, her palette thrust out before her and her paintbrush raised over her chest like a sword. Though in the late 1960's Angus's paintings and drawings record the devastation of a place for which she felt deeply and sought to defend, in this earlier work the future is only a suggestion, the flowers of the green haven are captured in full bloom and the cemetery itself sits still and quiet in the distance.

In this watercolour painting from 1975, artist Robin White paints her young son Michael sitting on the sand at Allan's Beach on the South coast of the Otago Peninsula. While the cherub-like toddler sits upright, his hand clutching the wooden wing of the archetypal Kiwi buzzy-bee, in the foreground a seagull lies prostate, wings curled back defencelessly and with its soft breast exposed. The juxtaposition between the young boy and the dead bird is typical of the artist's subject matter which is, as once described by Anne Kirker, both banal and beautiful. Confronting motherhood in her late twenties, in Michael, Allan's Beach Robin White paints a picture of innocence infused with a subtle sense of disquiet. The three elements of the composition - the dead bird, the child and his wooden toy relate to a holy trinity of sorts, but one that White grounds firmly in her own here and now. The buzzy-bee has featured several times in White's work; flying over the Otago Harbour with the Harbour Cone in the background in a si lkscreen and watercolour from 1974, and again crouched at the feet of an older Michael home from school in 1978. In White's work the bee is associated with new beginnings, and here its target-like painted eye looks blindly over the dead bird that lies curled in on itself, shaped like a stilled heart and symbolising the artist's loss of creative freedom which motherhood brings. The three elements are contained within an inverse tombstone. Despite these factors Michael, Allan's Beach is not an especially sad work, primarily because of the artist's straightforward and honest means of painting. Typically White's shadow and line is graphic, and her sense of depth shal low. As such the painting serves as a kind of statement of fact rather thar. a lament and its lasting impression is of the child Michael himself, seated at the centre of the work and staring out at us, his own beginning held firmly in hand. In the same year that Don Binney was appointed as a painting tutor at the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland he painted this work, Scrunties Island and Man 's Head II a rock formation on Auckland's West Coast. There is a marked change

in the artist's work from this period as ii moves away from the imagery of soaring birds and more closely focuses upon the forms of the land itself. The way Binney described th is shift to Art Historian Damian Skinner was that: 'Noth ing happened to it in the sense that [the painting] took ill and had to have an enema or a poultice or a camomile infusion . It just went on like most mid-career artists' works do go on, changing integral ly from yea r to year as different developments in art practice cobble their way into any artist's range of creative options.' While Binney's paintings from the 6Os have slick paint application and a graphic style, in many of his landscapes from the 7Os the paint becomes thicker and takes on some of the characteristics of the subject; here the sand is swept with the patterns of the tide, the foam of the waves curl invitingly and the rock formations themselves warp and weave together in the manner of twisting limbs. Binney has stated: 'I have always been interested in a space that stands not wholly unoccupied but metaphoric of a human condition, sometimes anxiety, often desire. ' In a peopleless landscape Binney helps us to feel at home here, sculpting forms to re-create their sense of wonder and mystery. Pennie Hunt

In the absence of a reserve the Auctioneer may exercise your bid in advance of any opening bid or may open the bidding on your behalf at the Auctioneers estimate, at the Auctioneer's sole discretion.

BUYING AT AUCTION 1. Floor Bidders Ensure that you have registered and obtained a buyer number before bidding on the lot or lots you have chosen Be aware that a buyer's premium of 12.5%+GST on the premium, a total of 14.06% , is payable by all buyers in addition to the hammer price. At some sa les the amount of the buyers' premium may be more or less than 12.5%. Please make sure that you are aware of the amount of the buyer's premium. Make your bids clear, preferably by holding up your buyer number card. If you make a mistake e.g. the auctioneer takes a bid from you at a higher level than you had intended, or you real ise that you had bid on the wrong lot, cal l out to the auctioneer immediately so that the bidd ing can be adjusted. 8. Collection. Purchases are to be taken away at the buyer's expense immediately after the sale except where a cheque remains uncleared. If this is not done Webb's will not be responsible if the lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed . Any items not collected within seven days of the auction may be subject to a storage and insurance fee. A receipted invoice must be produced prior to delivery of any lot. 9. Licences. Buyers who purchase an item which falls within the provisions of the Antiquities Act 1975 or the Arms Act 1958 cannot take possession of that item until they have shown to Webb's a license under the appropriate Act.

To rescind the sale of that or any other lot sold to the purchaser at the same or any other auction. c. To resell the lot by public or private sale. Any deficiency resulting from such resale, after giving credit to the purchaser for any part payment, together with all costs incurred in connection with the lot shall be paid to Webb's by the purchaser. Any surplus over the proceeds of sale sha ll belong to the seller and in this condition the expression "proceeds of sale" shall have the same meaning in relation to a sale by private treaty as it has in relation to a sa le by auction. d. To store the lot whether at Webb's own premises or elsewhere at the sole expense of the purchaser and to release the lot only after the purchase price has been paid in ful l plus the accrued cost of removal , storage, and all other costs connected to the lot. e. To charge interest on the purchase price at a rate 2% above Webb's bankers' then current rate for commercial overdraft facilities, to the extent that the price or any part of it remains unpa id for more than seven days from the date of the sale. f. To retain possession of that or any other lot purchased by the purchaser at that or any other auction and to release the same only after payment of money due. g. To apply the proceeds of sale of any lot then or subsequently due to the purchaser towards settlement of money due to Webb's or it's vendor. Webb's shall be entitled to a possessory lien on any property of the purchaser for any purpose while any money remains unpaid under this contract. h. To apply any payment made by the purchaser to Webb's towards any money owing to Webb's in respect of any thing whatsoever irrespective of any directive given in respect of, or restriction placed upon, such payment by the purchaser whether expressed or implied. i. ntle and right of disposal of the goods shall not pass to the purchaser until payment has been made in full by cleared funds. Where any lot purchased in held by Webb 's pending i. clearance of funds by the purchaser or ii. completion of payment after receipt of a deposit, the lot wi ll be held by Webb 's as bailee for the vendor, risk and title passing to the purchaser immediately upon notification of clearance of funds or upon completion of purchase. In the event that a lot is lost, stolen damaged or destroyed before title is transferred to the purchaser, the purchaser shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid to Webb 's in respect of that lot, but sha ll not be entitled to any compensation for any consequent losses howsoever arising. 11 . Bidders deemed Principals. All bidders shall be held personally and solely liable for all obligations arising from any bid, including both "telephone" and "absentee bids". Any person wishing to bid as agent for a third party must obtain written authority to do so from Webb's prior to bidding. 12."Subject Bids" Where the highest bid is below the reserve and the auctioneer declares a sale to be "subject to vendor's consent" or words to that effect, the highest bid remains binding upon the bidder until the vendor accepts or rejects it. If the bid is accepted there is a contractual obligation upon the bidder to pay for the lot.

1D. Failure to make Payment. If a purchaser fails either to pay for or take away any lot Webb's shall without further notice to the purchaser, at its absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights or remedies it may have,
