Chinese Furniture Thursday 19 May 2005
World-wide demand for Chinese furniture This A2 catalogue features an exceptional collection of Chinese antique and decorative furniture together with sculpture and lacquer-wares from the 19th and 20th centuries. Webb's Asian decorative arts specialist, James Parkinson, made his third trip to China last January when he visited leading warehouses and personally selected the pieces for this catalogue. The exporting of this very attractive and exotic furniture may however, be about to end. The Chinese Government is concerned that China's cultural heritage is in jeopardy from pillaging. Under article 9 of the 1970 Unesco Convention on Cultural Property, the government of The People's Republic recently sought to impose restrictions on all exporting of Chinese cultural items up to the end of the Qing Dynasty (1920). A report in The Antiques Trade Gazette of February this year outlines the effects, especially for the United States, where such restrictions would have dire consequences for the antique trade. James Parkinson reports that while he was in China, dealers and collectors from Europe were very actively buying. Webb's however, act only as a commission agent for the Chinese owners of the pieces in this catalogue, and therefore can offer local buyers an excellent opportunity to purchase from this collection at prices largely determined by the extent of the competition.

Unique Te Mata Estate Coleraine to go under the hammer at Webb's May 16 2005 A salmanazar (9 litre) bottle of Te Mata Estate Coleraine 2000 is the feature lot of the next fine wine auction at Webb 's. This one-off bottle has a remarkable history. The wine itself topped a tasting at Bordeaux's Vinexpo, the world 's largest wine trade fair, and has been awarded the highest score ever given to a New Zealand Cabernet/Merlot by esteemed America's wine critic, Robert Parker. This salmanazar was raffled in Hawkes Bay, to help fund the restoration of the magnificent 1915 Hawkes Bay Opera House. The winner, Fiona Jones, illustrated, has generously donated her prize to be auctioned to further the fundraising effort. The successful bidder not only gets this unique bottle in its wooden presentation case, but also two named seats in the Opera House which carry preferential booking rights. The lot will carry an estimate of $11 ,000 to $1 3,000. To register your interest, or for further information, please contact Simon Mickleson at Webb 's on (09) 529 5600 or email wine@webbs.co .nz or mobile 027 277 8777. At Webb's February 2005 auction, a 12 litre bottle of Te Mata Estate Coleraine 1990 sold for $9,350, the highest price ever paid for a New Zealand wine at a commercial auction .

The Auckland Museum seeks donors for six remaining panels to roof the Grand Atrium Recently, the boom of an enormous yellow crane can be seen towering above the back curvature of the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Inside it is six stories deep down into the substrata of the Museum. Excavation took months but the space is now filling up with huge steel support structures that are the foundations for the new Grand Atrium. Finally the Museum will have specialist storage facilities for their collections, an international sized exhibition space, a performance auditorium, new galleries and restaurants and an educations centre. At the top will be a conference centre opening out onto gardens on tl1e roof. Tllis stunning architectural development will be covered with a beautiful copper and glass domed roof. Tl1e Museum Circle Foundation is an independent charitable trust established to support tl1e Auckland War Memorial Museum. In 2004 the Museum Circle launched the With a View to the Future project. Eacl1 of tl1e 48 segments of the dome is $25,000 (payable over five years) and the contributors are acknowledged with the etching of their names into the glass panels. The response has been outstanding and only six panels remain. Tl1e donors have come from old Auckland and New Zealand families, family trusts and most importantly Ngati Whatua. The Museum Circle l1as asked t11is cross section of New Zealanders for their l1istories. Tl1ese histories will be collated into a bound limited edition for each of the contributors and presented to all public libraries. The stories so far are diverse and colourful. The Museum Circle must close the With a View to the Future campaign by July 2005 as tl1e enormous glass panels are being made and etched in Canada and will be installed in the Museum by the end of tl1e year. Tl1e Circle has made all contributors Patrons and will hold a special celebratory and thank you dinner in tl1e building site early in 2006. If you would like to be part of tl1is once in a lifetime opportunity please contact: Rozelle Edwards : Development Manager. IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY: WRIST & POCKET WATCHES Important Conditions of Sale for Watches. Please note: as many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb's offers no guarantee as to mechanical condition or condition of seals etc. A timepiece described as 'fine' or 'as new' is an opinion as to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition.
JEWELLERY Please note: where gemological reports are available these should be read together with the catalogue description. Should there be, through error, omission or introduction of better evidence, any significant difference between the catalogued description and that provided in the gemologist's report, it shall be assumed that the buyer has inspected the report and is buying in acceptance of it. Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been assessed for weight, colour or clarity mounted and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore based on estimates which are limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given the stone will have been weighed loose, however while the grading of a stone loose will minimise error margins it shall be accepted by the buyer that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.

A Rare Archeologically Excavated, Western Han Dynasty Hollow Brick 2nd - 1st Century B.C.,
this extraordinary; large pottery brick is an example of those used in the construction of Han period tombs. The hollow bricks were made of clay moulded around a wooden core which was withdrawn before firing. Hollow bricks of this size were typically used outside the main structure which incorporated examples of around 130cm length. The structures that used such bricks were for example exterior stairways. These brick tomb chambers developed as replacement for wooden tomb structures during the Warring period, becoming more and more architecturally complex in later periods. This complexity saw the demise of the hollow brick in preference for solid smalltr ones. The brick is decorated with subjects in intaglio lines, Note has been made of these decorations being stamped because of the apparent repetative nature, however close inspection of this brick reveals that although the designs of the plumed tailed birds and horses are very similar there are slight variances which would point to these images in fact being hand tooled into the clay when in a leather state. recovered from Beijing , China in the late 1970's and remained in storage for many years until the early 1990's where it was bought and assembled for sale. This square table has a thin panelled top in a wide frame with an ice-plate edge which is supported by a beaded convex waist and a beautifully carved beaded apron. The lower edge of the apron is convoluted with a pair of facing dragons carved on all four sides. The style is typical Ming. (The dragons denote that the table was commissioned by a wealthy mandarin of high office as only the higher classes were able to display the dragon motif in their homes). The style of the dragons is typical early Ming. The craftsmanship is of the highest order typcial of the Ming Beijing workshops. The square beaded legs are braced beneath the carved apron by a continuous humped stretcher and having incuring hoof feet. Apart from a small repair in the table top this piece is in perfect condition. The Timber; Huanghuali literally translates to "Yellow Flowering Pear" and is of a rare genus of hardwood related to the rosewood family. Very rare in ancient China this timber was only known to grow on Hainan Island and was generally regarded as the most desirable of all furniture timbers in China. Known for its beauty, hardness and strength this timber was ideally suited to the demands of Ming Furniture artisans. it was always among the most rare and costly of timbers and therefore used only by the wealthy for special furniture commissions, thus guaranteeing that the workmanship was of the highest order.

Ensure that you have registered and obtained a buyer number before bidding on the lot or lots you have chosen Be aware thal a buyer's premium of 12.5%+GSTon the premium, atotal of 14.06%, is payable by all buyers in addition to the hammer price. At some sales the amount of the buyers' premium may be more or less than 12.5%. Please make sure that you are aware of the amount of the buyer's premium. Make your bids clear, preferably by holding up your buyer number card. If you make a mistake e.g. the auctioneer takes a bid from you at a higher level than you had intended, or you realise that you had bid on the wrong lot, call out to the auctioneer immediately so that the bidding can be adjusted. Waiting until after the hammer falls is too la'e. If your bid is the highest and the lot is knocked down to you then you have entered a binding obligation to pay for that lot.
