GLOBAL QUALITY OF LIFE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WEALTHY AND DEVELOPING NATIONS

IT HAS LONG BEEN ACCEPTED THAT MATERIAL WELL-BEING, AS MEASURED BY THE GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP) PER PERSON, CANNOT ALONE EXPLAIN THE BROADER QUALITY OF LIFE IN A COUNTRY. ONE STRAND OF THE LITERATE HAS TRIED TO ADJUST GDP BY QUANTIFYING FACETS THAT ARE OMITTED BY THE GDP MEASURE - VARIOUS NON-MARKET ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL ILLS SUCH AS ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION. BUT THE APPROACH HAS FACED INSURMOUNTABLE DIFFICULTIES IN ASSIGNING MONETARY VALUES TO THE VARIOUS FACTORS AND INTANGIBLES THAT COMPRISE A WIDER MEASURE OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC WELL-BEING. THE ECONOMIST INTELLIGENCE UNIT HAS DEVELOPED A NEW “QUALITY OF LIFE” INDEX BASED ON A UNIQUE METHODOLOY THAT LINKS THE RESULTS OF SUBJECTIVE LIFE-SATISFACTION SURVEYS TO THE OBJECTIVE DETERMINANTS OF QUALITY OF LIFE ACROSS COUNTRIES.

1914 Worl

The Golem

1915 German horror film A trader rresurrects a golem brought to life by a rabbi. The golem falls in love with the traders wife. When she doesn’t love him back the golem resorts to murder.

Nosferatu

1922 German exprssionistic vampire film An unauthorized adaptation to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Count Orlok moves into a town and soon a plauge starts to hit the town. Turns out he is a vampire and the only one who can stop him is the woman he is obsessed with.

1931

Frankenstein

American exprssionistic horror film.

Doctor Frankenstein creates a human life out of body parts. The brain is from a criminal. Although the monster seems innocent the people assume he is bad and antagonize him. He is forced to attack and escape. The moster later faces off with Frankenstein and climbs up a windmill which is burned by the towns people, killing the monster.

King Kong

American Monster Film A huge gorrila named Kong is found on a remote prehistoric island and brought to New York. Kong falls in love with a woman who was on the ship that captured him. He breaks free in New York, finds the women and takes her to the Empire State Building. He makes sure she is safe before climbing to the top where he is shot by planes.

The Valley of Gwangi

1969 American Western-Fantasy A cowboy looking for fame and fortune captures a tyrannosaurus rex named Gwangi in the Forbidden Valley. He puts it in a Mexican circus. A gypsy attempts to free Gwangi. Gwangi gets loose and attacks the town. He is eventually caught in a cathedral which catches on fire, killing Gwangi.

The town is saddened by the loss of life as well as Gwangi’s horrible death.

Jaws

1975 American Thriller A giant shark attacks beach goers. The town finally decides to hire a marine biologist and a profesional shark hunter. The shark is finally killed but not after many lives are lost.

Alien

American Science Fiction Horror A space crew receives a strange transmission.

When they land to check it out they find a destroyed alien space ship. They are then attacked by the Alien.

1982

Q, The Winged Serpent

American Horror The aztec god, Quetzalcoatl, has been brought to life by a cult in New York City. It picks off people from the tops of buildings. A criminal finds Q’s lair and holds it ransom. “Only real difference between a monster and a god is monsters can be killed.”

1989

Tremors

American Dark Comedy Monster FIlm People in a small mining town start mysteriously dying one after another. A seismologist working in the town detects tremors at the same time as the deaths. Turns out it is three snake-like monsters named Graboids and they have isolated the town. Eventually they are killed off one by one but not until most of the town has died.

Brotherhood of the Wolf

2002 French Monster Film Set in 18th-Century France, a beast is killing women and children in nearby villages. The King orders for it to be killed. A ragtag group of people discover the beast is controled by a group called the Brotherhood of the Wolf who are trying to take over France. Eventually the Brotherhood is killed by the group along with the beast. It turns out the beast was a trained animal with metal armor and modded body parts

The Host

2006 South Korean Monster Film A morgue pours hundreds of bottles of formaldehyde into a river. Years later a monster appears and starts attacking people by the river. A family’s daughter is taken by the monster but survives. The family gets ushered to a quarantine hold because the government believes it is carrying a virus. The family gets a call from the daughter and breaks out of the quarantine to save her. After much struggle the family kills the monster.

Cloverfield

2008 American Monster Film Follows five New Yorkers with a hand held camera. A monster starts attacking New York. The government tries to kill it but is unsuccessful and plans to destroy all of Manhattan. They fail to kill the monster.
