Lax Teams Participate in Native American Heritage Month Members of the Emmanuel College Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Teams had the unique opportunity to listen to a presentation by Tony Sorci, a descendant of the Navajo Nation, on Thursday, November 15th. Sorci presented on the history and origins of lacrosse in the Native American Tradition. Through a joint effort by Damita Davis, a Director in Emmanuel’s Office of Student Activities and Multicultural Programs, and Saints lacrosse coaches, Brendan McWilliams and Peter Freidman, the event was one of several College programs conducted in November in honor of Native American Heritage Month. Many tend to associate the sport of lacrosse with private New England preparatory schools. However, the sport originated out of Native American culture and religious beliefs. Lacrosse was very central to the fundamental Native American traditions, utilizing principals of the sport to teach strategy and resolve conflict. Lacrosse in the 1600’s was a very

different game than it has become today. Obviously, the equipment has evolved remarkably, from wooden sticks with weaved rawhide to plastic heads and shafts composed of aluminum, graphite and titanium. Helmets and pads were nonexistent in the original game. Additionally, the playing venues are completely different. Native Americans played lacrosse over miles of land, nothing like the synthetic turf lax fields of today. However, despite the sport’s evolution over time, Sorci was able to draw upon many of the principals of the sport that have remained consistent over the centuries. Sorci, speaking with an old wooden lacrosse stick in hand, began by introducing himself as a descendant of the Navaho Bitter Water Clan. His lacrosse career began in the

Brittany Ridge

Senior midfielder Brittany Ridge (Portland, Me.), one of the Saints’ tri-captains, earned her third all-conference appearance in as many years but her first on the First Team. After being named to the All-GNAC Third Team as both a sophomore and junior, Ridge was named to the First Team in 2012. The senior captain started in all 20 of Emmanuel’s games this year and was solid in the midfield for the Saints all season. Ridge finished the year with three points off one goal and one assist, but was voted among the top 11 players in the GNAC.

Kevin Shirley Men’s Soccer Senior forward Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.) was named to the 2012 GNAC All-Conference Third Team after finishing the year with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Over his four-year career, Shirley played in a total of 71 games while starting 66 contests, both of which rank first all-time in the program’s history. The forward registered 62 points to rank second all-time in the Saints record book while his 10 assists and 26 goals also place him second all-time in both career categories.

Lindsey Garvey Women’s Soccer Junior forward Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I.) is a two-time All-GNAC pick. Garvey was named to the 2012 GNAC Second Team this season, after being voted Third Team as a sophomore. Garvey led the Saints in goals, assists and points this season, scoring 10 goals and dishing out 10 assists for 30 total points. Garvey’s assist total led the GNAC and she was ranked 6th among the conference leaders in scoring. Three of Garvey’s goals this season were game-winners.

5th grade, continued throughout high school, with him going on to play collegiate lacrosse at Colorado College. Post-graduation, Sorci played two seasons of professional lacrosse with the Buffalo Bandits. He also played for several reservation teams. He currently serves as the Head Lacrosse Coach at Vermont Academy, where he has coached high school lacrosse for the past four years. In addition to his coaching duties, Sorci is teaches English and Native American History.

Sorci is extremely proud of his Native American culture and was excited to come to Emmanuel and speak about something he loves. Sorci referred to lacrosse as “the creator’s game,” as it was passed on to his ancestors by their Gods. He discussed the Native American history of the first original lacrosse game, a contest between the four-legged species and the winged species, or the animals and the birds. Sorci explained that the Native Americans played lacrosse “for the people who couldn’t play for themselves.” If a member of a clan was sick, the others would put medicine inside a ball and have a lacrosse game in honor of their sick peer. Sorci told the Saints that

lacrosse is a special sport and to “honor the game,” by “playing for the people who can’t play.” He stressed considering, “why we play the game” and “who we play for.” Sorci concluded his presentation by reminding the Saints that anyone can play lacrosse today, but for those who do, he hopes they “play for the creator, are thankful for the opportunity to play and never take it for granted.” Saints Head Coach Brendan McWilliams was very happy that his team was able to take part in this program and to understand the roots of the game that he and his players love. Its more than just a sport. “Learning more about the origins of the game of lacrosse hopefully gives our teams some additional perspective on how our teams hope to practice, play, and compete. This was great opportunity for our teams to learn about the true history of our game.” commented McWilliams. The Saints kick off the 2013 lacrosse season in March. The Emmanuel men will host SUNY Maritime College on March 1st at 7:00 PM. The Emmanuel women will play at Regis College on March 13th at 6:00 PM.

Campus Ministry Blesses 2012-13 Basketabll Season With the kick off of collegiate basketball upon us, the Emmanuel College Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams, as well as the Saints Dance and Cheerleading Teams, participated in a “Blessing of the Basketball Season” led by Emmanuel’s Office of Campus Ministry on November 15 in the Jean Yawkey Center Gymnasium. In addition to the four teams, several members of Emmanuel’s staff and administration participated in the community ceremony. Led by Rev. John Spencer and his staff, the blessing called for each team to be welcomed forward by its captains, before a member from the Campus Ministry staff recited a prayer. The remaining attendees held out their hands as a sign of their blessing, while a prayer was read.

Morse along with her co-workers, Head Athletic Trainer Ron Laham and Assistant Athletic Trainer Katie Bloor, stay in touch with the recent athletic training and sports medicine trends by attending trainings and certification programs surrounding cutting edge methods and techniques. Morse’s most recent certification followed a Casting/Bracing Seminar sponsored by the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP). The four-day program included two days of casting work in Stoughton, Massachusetts, as well as two days of bracing in Las Vegas, Nevada. “The trend in the medical profession over the next 5-10 years is to reduce casting and increase bracing,” explained Morse. The new philosophy is cost effective and but also offers additional options for injured athletes. Braces are adjustable and may offer varying degrees of mobility, which can increase over time based upon rehabilitation progress. Unlike casts, some braces are now built to be waterproof, yet still offer the intended degree of immobilization. In many cases, bracing, as opposed to casting, may allow for an expedited return to athletic competition. At the seminar, Morse learned the ways in which braces can fix deficiencies and in turn how muscle rehabilitation can be similarly effective. During the program, Morse was trained to cast breaks and fractures, as well as to fit, size and adjust the specialized braces. “Technically, if we had the equipment, I could cast a broken bone right now in our athletic training room,” commented Morse. One of the more interesting bracing features that Morse was trained on in Las Vegas was a brace that can be locked and unlocked with a key. The new concept was geared toward parents with younger children. However, Morse would love to use the new lockable braces at Emmanuel. “We have some pretty feisty student-athletes,” she joked, “and they are just dying to get back out there in the action.” A lockable brace could perform the same functions as a cast for its intended time, but it could be easily unlocked by an athletic trainer once a student-athlete was officially cleared to return to action. Morse, who is currently enrolled in the graduate program at Emmanuel, received fifteen continuing education units (CEUs) for her casting/bracing certification. Additionally, Morse received her CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor Certification from the American Heart Association last year. She is the only athletic trainer at Emmanuel who is officially certified to conduct training courses in all three areas. Morse has a two-year instructor certification and must teach a minimum of two courses each year to maintain it. Morse’s training sessions in cardio pulmonary resuscitation/automated external defibrillation and first aid last approximately four hours each and are open to all Emmanuel College staff members as a convenient and affordable way to become certified in these life-saving measures.
