Announcements RN to BSN Program Receives 10 year CCNE Re-accreditation The faculty are pleased to announce that the Emmanuel College RN to BSN Program has received a 10 year re-accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education!

NURS 3103 Health Assessment: The Health Assessment classes will be held at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Professions Physician Assistant Lab this year. You will park as usual in the Parking Lot at Emmanuel College. It is a short walk to the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Professions (MCPHP). You will need to exit the parking lot on Avenue Louis Pasteur to the right and walk one block to Longwood Avenue. You then take a left onto Longwood Avenue and then take a left onto Place Road to #101. You will need to present your Emmanuel College ID card to the Security Guard inside the 101 Palace Road entrance to MCPHP prior to every class and keep your ID visible while on the MCPHS camps. The guard will direct you to the PA LAB that is located in the basement not too far from this entrance.

Classes are now held on Saturday mornings from 9-1 pm. Please check the nursing course schedule.

Help with Blackboard Vista & Outlook: Available in the evenings and on the weekends at the Emmanuel College Library.

Ask for one of the reference librarians. The College is now using Microsoft Office 2007 so it is important for all students to have this software on your home computer. If you do not have access to Office 2007 at home, computers are available for use at the EC Library.

PHIL 2605 Ethics and Health Care Law (Extra Section): Starts Fall 2 on Tuesday, November 3 from 6-9pm (Boston) December 2009 Graduates:

Make sure you have submitted a Degree Application to graduate. If you have not submitted an application please contact the Registrar’s Office and your advisor.

2010 Pinning Ceremony: The date for the 2010 Pinning Ceremony is Thursday, May 6. All students who have completed both clinical courses (NURS 4170 & NURS 4169) are eligible to take part in the pinning ceremony. More information will be forthcoming.

If You Need Help with Coursework…

Any student who finds him/herself struggling in a course is encouraged to speak with the instructor and to take advantage of the services offered through the Academic Resource Center (ARC). This office provides peer tutoring, writing assistance, disability services, and academic counseling. The ARC (Room G04 tel:617.735.9755) is located on the lower level of the Cardinal Cushing library.

If you are interested in writing assistance services, Eric Bland is the writing specialist who is available to help nursing students on Wednesdays. He is located in the Academic Resources Center (ARC) and can be contacted by email through the First Class system or blander@emmanuel.edu.

Scholarships Metro West Community Health Care Foundation The Metro West Community Health Care Foundation offers $2,000 scholarships on an academic year basis to Metro West area students interested in pursuing formal education opportunities in nursing, medicine, and the allied health professions. This past year, the Foundation awarded over $145,000 in scholarships to area students pursuing these important careers. Applications are reviewed as they are received. Application packets are available in the door slot of Gerry Chalykoff’s office (Adm. Room 430B).

There is no deadline.

Boston Chapter of Association of Nurses in AIDS Care Scholarship Nominees must submit a typed essay, no more than 500 words, describing their interest or experience in HIV/AIDS care and how they would utilize the scholarship. One letter of reference must be included. Nursing faculty, ANAC members (except Board members) or supervisors of clinical experiences may be utilized as references. GNEC Conference Info:

This summer, I was fortunate to attend the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Gerontological Nursing Education Conference session in Philadelphia. The funding for this Conference series is provided by a very generous grant from the John A. Hartford Institute. We had three days of classes and discussions led by nurse scholars whose work focuses on the health promotion and health teaching needs of older adults.

All participants were nurse educators representing Colleges of Nursing from colleges and universities around the United States. Among our topics of discussion was the need to augment the amount of class time that is devoted to teaching nursing students specifically about caring for older adults. It was interesting to hear how much variation there is in content, teaching methods, and clinical time devoted to gerontology . Statistics indicate that the population of older adults will increase greatly over the next two decades and life expectancy is increasing. This will make it very urgent to continue to educate nurses in the specific care needs of older adults.
