The Saints enter the 2010 men’s volleyball season with optimism for another great year. Last year, the team set an Emmanuel record for wins in a season and made the program’s third appearance in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Tournament. The Saints also finished second in the inaugural season of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) competition.
The Emmanuel men’s basketball team has had a sluggish start this season, with an overall record of 2-8. The team got its first win of the season on December 5th at the Colby Invitational, beating Maine Maritime Academy 76-69.
The Emmanuel women’s basketball team is making a name for itself once again this season. The Saints traveled to California over the holiday break, competing in the California Lutheran Holiday Classic, where they upset Messiah College in the final round of the tournament. Messiah College previously had an undefeated record and was ranked 10th in the nation in the D3Hoops.com poll.
Facing local Division III foes during Brandeis University’s Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational on January 16th, the Saints set a number of new school records. James Ferdenzi ’13 improved the Saints’ mark in the 55-meter sprint while Jordan Coulombe ’12 literally raised the bar in the high jump. For the women, Shannon McCabe ’12 (55-meter hurdles), Brittany Sorice ’12 (600-meter run) and Katasi Kulubya ’12 (400-meter sprint) all set new Emmanuel records, in doing so each qualifying for the New England Division III Championships as well.
The team went 19-13 in 2009 and held a 9-3 mark in GNAC play. This year, Emmanuel is slated to play its toughest non-conference schedule ever, facing powerhouses such as Milwaukee School of Engineering, Harvard and Carthage. The Saints opened the season on January 16th, with a home non-conference match against Endicott College, winning 3-2.
The Saints look to dominate in conference play in the second half of the season. The team picked up its first win over a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent this season, defeating Suffolk University, 67-65 on January 12th, giving the Saints a record of 1-3 in the conference.
The Saints were the top-ranked team in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference’s (GNAC) preseason poll and have had a successful first half of their season, with a current overall record of 9-3. The team upset nationally ranked teams in Bowdoin College (No. 5) and Brandeis University (No. 14).
