Institutional Visual Identity College Seal The Emmanuel College Seal is a specially designed form of the College name and may not be modified in any way. It was created by Chaignon La Rose, an artist and authority on ecclesiastical and college heraldry. Artwork for the seal is available as printed logo sheets in positive or negative versions or in electronic form. The seal must always be used on official Emmanuel College documents and external communications.

Three white lilies suggest the Holy Trinity and the three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience of the Sisters of Notre Dame, as well as the fleur-de-lis of France, where the order began.

The words “Seal of Emmanuel College of Boston” encircle the shield in Latin.

Emmanuel College’s affiliation with the Boston Archdiocese is represented in the three hills, long a symbol of Boston.

A gold-edged open book combines the academic and the religious. The inscription Emmanuel, or “God is with us,” appears in the original Hebrew.

College Seal Usage Use of the College seal is an endorsement and verification of official school business.

The College Seal may be used with or without the name of the College, and it should be reproduced from authorized printed sheets or electronic files provided by the Office of Marketing Communications.

Formal Usage Very few formal, official communications require the full-color version of the College Seal. Communications from the Office of the President are the only materials authorized to use this version of the seal.

Usage in Color The one-color blue seal may be used when printing on white or off-white paper. See specifications for Pantone color identification for ink colors.

Black The black one-color seal should be used on light-colored paper and where the background color is too light to reverse the seal as white.

White The white (one color or colorless) seal is used on all color backgrounds too dark for black.

Logotype Left-Aligned Logotype Use this configuration where the typography of the layout is primarily left-aligned, or where there is limited depth within the layout available.

Centered Logotype Use the stacked, centered layout where the typography of the layout is primarily centered, or where there is limited width within the layout.

Institutional Typefaces Print Typefaces There are two major typefaces designated for all printed Emmanuel College communications.

The serif font family is called Sabon. For running text and most common needs, Sabon Roman should be used. Use upper- and lower-case with initial cap style for headlines and titles. Sabon Bold, Sabon Italic, and Sabon Small Caps should be used sparingly and for emphasis, where appropriate. Use only one level of separation between font styles (just bold or just italic, never bold and italic). And, never use more than three or four styles on most documents, in total.

Use sans-serif font Frutiger when you need more separation between styles. Frutiger 45, 55, 65 and 75 are roman. Frutiger 46, 56, 66 and 76 are italic.

Serif Sabon Roman is the primary font for all Emmanuel College communications. Within the font family, Sabon Bold, Italic and Small Caps may also be used for emphasis.

Sans Serif Frutiger 45, 55, 65 and 75 are roman fonts.

Skip one font number if you need a bold for more emphasis. Use 45 with 65, or 55 with 75. Or 46 with 66, or 56 with 76.

Institutional Color Palette Print Color Palette Throughout all color reproduction processes, color selection should be limited to these major institutional choices. The Emmanuel College blue used for our name and seal is the most recognizable symbol affiliated with our school. All other colors should be chosen carefully from this palette to attract your target audience and provide the best opportunities for legibility, quality of reproduction and appropriateness.
