Sister Mary Johnson, SNDdeN ’79

A nationally and internationally respected scholar, educator, and leader, Sister Mary Johnson has given clear and inspiring expression to Emmanuel College’s most deeply held values, including superb intellectual inquiry, global engagement, and a sustained commitment to justice and the common good.

As an undergraduate at Emmanuel, Sister Mary served as president of her class, an experience she credits with shaping her leadership journey. She went on to devote 22 years to the College as a professor of sociology, playing a central role in educating generations of students through teaching, mentorship, and scholarship. During her time at Emmanuel, she and her colleagues conducted the first national study of young adult Catholics, an influential project that has shaped both sociological research and pastoral practice in the United States.

Following her service at Emmanuel, Sister Mary became Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Religious Studies at Trinity Washington University in Washington, D.C., also founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Her collaborative research and published works on Catholic religious orders of women, global migration, and Catholic Social Teaching continue to influence religious and academic leaders, demonstrating the power of a liberal arts education rooted in ethical reflection and engagement with the most pressing challenges facing our world.

In 2021, Sister Mary was elected Congregational Leader of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. In this role, she is based in the Congregation’s Generalate in Rome and, with the other four members of the Congregational Leadership Team, she is entrusted with responsibility for the global congregation across five continents. Her leadership includes regular engagement with the International Union of Superiors General, international justice and peace organizations, and Vatican offices, reflecting her influence and standing within the global Church.

Rooted in the charism of Saint Julie Billiart, Sister Mary exemplifies a life dedicated to justice and rooted in excellence, faith, and liberty of spirit.

Dr. Tenley E. Albright

Dr. Tenley E. Albright is an Olympic champion, physician, and civic leader whose life reflects extraordinary perseverance, intellectual achievement, and service to others.

Raised in Newton, Massachusetts, Dr. Albright achieved historic distinction as the first American woman to win an Olympic title in figure skating, earning gold at the 1956 Winter Games in Italy after capturing a silver medal four years earlier. During this remarkable period, she also achieved the rare “triple crown” of figure skating, winning the World, North American, and U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Her accomplishments helped establish new standards of excellence for American athletes and continue to inspire generations through their demonstration of discipline, determination, and grace.

These achievements are all the more notable given the adversity she overcame early in life. After contracting polio as a child, Dr. Albright endured a long and demanding recovery before returning to the ice and ultimately rising to the highest level of her sport.

Following her athletic career, Dr. Albright pursued her longstanding ambition to become a physician. A graduate of Harvard Medical School and later a member of its faculty, she built a distinguished career as a surgeon and medical educator, contributing to advances in patient care and professional training. She has also served in a wide range of leadership roles in medicine and public life, founding and supporting collaborative initiatives that bring together experts from health, science, and public policy.

Across athletics, medicine, and civic engagement, Dr. Albright has forged a life of lasting impact, marked by leadership, resilience, and a lifelong dedication to improving the lives of others.

Dr. Raymond M. Hakim

Dr. Raymond M. Hakim is a distinguished physician, scientist, and leader in the field of nephrology whose career has been dedicated to advancing medical knowledge and improving the lives of patients around the world.

Trained first as an engineer, Dr. Hakim earned a master’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before completing his medical degree at McGill University. Following residency training in internal medicine, he pursued fellowship training in nephrology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School. He later served as a professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and played a central role in shaping modern dialysis care as a co‑founder of Renal Care Group and as Chief Medical Officer of Fresenius Medical Care North America.

A prolific scholar and educator, Dr. Hakim has authored more than 200 scientific publications and has been widely honored for his contributions to nephrology, quality improvement, and patient‑centered care. His work has influenced both clinical practice and the education of physicians nationally and internationally.

His connection to Emmanuel College reflects a deep commitment to education and social responsibility. In memory of his late wife, Catherine, a member of the Class of 1970, he established the Catherine McLaughlin Hakim Lecture Series, which brings distinguished speakers to campus to explore issues of sociology, social justice, and public policy in the spirit of Emmanuel’s mission.

Through his leadership in medicine and his generous support of Emmanuel College, Dr. Hakim stands as a champion of innovation and ideas in the service of human flourishing.

Andrew “Andy” Yosinoff

Andrew “Andy” Yosinoff is one of the most accomplished coaches in women’s collegiate basketball and a cherished member of the Emmanuel College community, whose career has been defined by mentorship, dedication, and a deep commitment to student success.

Since arriving at Emmanuel College in 1977, Coach Yosinoff has built a women’s basketball program marked by sustained excellence and competitive achievement. Over nearly five decades, his teams have captured numerous conference championships, made more than 20 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, and advanced to the national Final Four. With more than 900 career victories, he ranks among the winningest coaches in NCAA history.

Yet Coach Yosinoff has always measured success by more than records and championships. Over generations, he has mentored hundreds of student‑athletes, instilling values of hard work, discipline, teamwork, and resilience. His players consistently speak of the confidence, character, and sense of purpose they developed under his leadership—lessons that have shaped their lives long after graduation.

Coach Yosinoff’s steadfast devotion to Emmanuel is also reflected in his enduring service and generosity to the College. In honor of his mother, he established the Freda Yosinoff Memorial Scholarship Fund to support Emmanuel students, affirming his family’s belief in education as a pathway to opportunity. Inspired as well by his father, Louis Yosinoff, a lifelong educator, he has remained steadfastly devoted to Emmanuel’s mission and to the formation of students in mind and spirit.

Through a remarkable career devoted to athletics, education, and mentorship, Andrew Yosinoff has left an indelible mark on Emmanuel College and on the lives of countless students.

The academic attire worn at Commencement has its origins in the Middle Ages. The purpose of academic regalia is to display the academic and scholarly achievements of the wearer. From the cap, gown and hood, it is possible to distinguish the institution from which the wearer graduated, the field of learning in which his or her degree was earned and the level of degree.

Academic hoods are the most distinctive feature of academic attire in the United States. They are the visual representation of scholastic degrees, and their design is authorized by the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume. Hoods are lined with the official color of the college or university conferring the degree and the velvet detail represents the learning discipline. All Emmanuel College hoods are black with blue and gold lining, and the following colors represent each discipline:

Master of Business Administration Drab

Master of Education Light Blue

Master of Science in Nursing Apricot

The honorary hood is white for Doctor of Humane Letters and gold for Doctor of Science.

The mortarboard hats and soft caps are black. Prior to receiving the bachelor’s degree, the tassel is worn on the right. The graduates ceremonially turn the tassel to the left at the end of Commencement Exercises. Doctoral tassels are gold. Bachelor’s degree candidates who are members of academic honor societies wear cords to represent this achievement.

Gowns are normally black, and the level of the degree is indicated by the gown’s cut. Colored doctoral gowns represent the school colors of the college or university that awarded the doctoral degree. The blue and gold gowns of the platform party of Trustees and honorees represent the Emmanuel College colors. Other dignitaries choose to wear their own institutions’ robes. The President of Emmanuel College wears presidential regalia, along with the Emmanuel College Presidential Medallion.

Latin Honors are awarded to full time bachelor’s degree candidates who have achieved high scholastic performance based on grade point averages. The honors are cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude.

Distinction in the Field of Concentration is awarded to bachelor’s degree candidates who receive a specified grade point average in major courses and who successfully complete a significant senior project.
