Office of Student Financial Services (OSFS) April/May 2012 Newsletter 2012-2013 Financial Aid: Next Steps I applied for financial aid: When will I receive my financial aid award for the 2012-2013 academic year? Award letter e-mail notifications are sent beginning in mid-June (after grades are released) to students who completed the 2012-2013 FAFSA, have a complete financial aid file and registered for Fall 2012. How do I know if I have a complete financial aid file? You can view missing documents through Online Academic Resources (OAR). Additionally, the Office of Student Financial Services (OSFS) will send you an email requesting the documents to complete your financial aid file. Typically, what is required are signed copies of your and your parents’ 2011 IRS Tax Return Transcripts and a Verification Worksheet, which is available through the “Student Financial Services” page of the Portal.

Can I submit signed copies of my tax returns instead of tax transcripts? No. Beginning this year, the OSFS can no longer accept copies of your or your parents federal tax returns. In order to verify the information on your FAFSA, you will need to submit copies of your and/or your parents’ IRS tax return transcripts (if requested). Alternatively, you can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool offered on the FAFSA. This tool offers you and your parents the opportunity to transfer your 2011 tax information into the FAFSA approximately two weeks after you electronically file your taxes, or six to eight weeks after you file your taxes via a paper application. We recommend using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool because it is easier and faster than requesting IRS tax return transcripts. Should you need to request IRS tax return transcripts, you can do so online at www.irs.gov or by calling 800-908-9946. I haven’t applied for financial aid for the 2012-2013 academic year: Is it too late to apply? No, although the financial aid priority filing date has passed, it is not too late to apply for financial aid at www.fafsa.gov. However, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible since some financial aid is awarded on a funds-available basis. Massachusetts has a FAFSA application filing deadline of May 1st to be considered for state funding. Emmanuel College will not make up for the loss of funding due to late applications. I applied for an endowed scholarship: When will I be notified of the decision? We will notify endowed scholarship applicants by the beginning of June via e-mail.
Interested in Taking Summer Courses? Summer courses cost $1,370 per 4-credit course and payment is due prior to the start of classes. There are limited aid options available for summer courses; however, we encourage you to meet with the OSFS to discuss your payment options, including private student and parent loans. Federal Loan Consolidation Federal student loan consolidation may help make your loans more manageable by combining several loans into one single loan. Through June 30th the Department of Education will offer “Special Direct Consolidation Loans” in addition to the “Traditional Direct Consolidation Loans.” A “Special Direct Consolidation Loan” offers borrowers different repayment terms and benefits than the “Traditional Direct Consolidation Loans” and is specifically for students who have student loans through the Department of Education and at least one commercially held (FFEL) loan. The “Special Direct Consolidation Loans” can help borrowers manage their debt by ensuring all of their federal loans are serviced by one servicer. Borrowers will also receive an interest rate reduction as a repayment incentive. Students can view information for their federal loan servicers at www.nslds.gov. For more information on “Traditional Direct Consolidation” or “Special Direct Consolidation” loans, visit www.studentloans.gov.
