TELEHANDLERS FOR CONSTRUCTION Increasingly, the motto for safety and versatility in construction is the telehandler, a four-wheeled vehicle with a telescopic boom capable of supporting a wide range of attachments. Telehandlers are the Swiss army knife of construction machinery – the right attachments turns the one machine into the one you need for the job at hand. Modern construction sites are a far cry from those of even 20 years ago. You won’t find many ladders being used for a start, with even a single-level building project being swathed in scaffolding to meet health and safety requirements. Labour supply is tight, and so are the budgets and timeframes. It is essential to have the right team on the right tools. “The right tools” now means nail guns instead of hammers and elevated working platforms instead of ladders. Equipment needs to perform and be safe to use whatever the weather.; and vehicles need to be versatile, in order to save on capital and operational costs by running as few as possible. This is where telehandlers are the perfect fit.

HEALTH & SAFETY One of the strongest arguments for using a telehandler on a construction site is health and safety. A key part of the push for safer workplaces in New Zealand is to use the right gear for the job. As an employer, a construction contractor’s legal responsibility to supply staff with the right gear means there is significant financial and reputational risk in failing to do so. A telehandler fitted with the appropriate attachment will satisfy those legal requirements and show staff that you take safety seriously. With each attachment comes the peace of mind that this is a proven product available “off the shelf”, rather than an untested one-off product from the local engineering workshop.

TELEHANDLER USES IN CONSTRUCTION

To ensure the highest level of on-site safety, telehandlers must only be used by properly trained,

Not all telehandlers are the same. The basic model for construction and agriculture is the standard fixed-boom telehandler. Next up is the rotational telehandler. These rotate around the chassis like a crane, meaning that the vehicle can be stationary on its outriggers, significantly increasing flexibility and accessibility. At the top of the pile is the heavylift telehandler, which has proved popular with the mining industry in particular. The only limit to a telehandler’s versatility is the availability of a suitable attachment, and there is a long list of these, including elevated the work platform (EWP), winch, hook, jib crane, bucket and forks. Switching from one attachment to another is quick and easy. Some machines come equipped with hydraulic functions that allow attachments to be hooked up with a touch of a button. Swapping from an EWP to a winch or forks shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. Alternatively, removal of a single pin enables such a switch.

qualified operators. Planning and preparation for using the telehandler on site can also increase safety; in particular, it is important that there is a clear, pre-determined travel path for the machine to guide its operation.

The versatility of a telehandler is a huge benefit, bringing both time and cost savings to a construction site. They have the functionality of a forklift and the reach and strength of a crane – with many models having a reach of up to 30m and a lifting capacity of up to 21 tonnes. Because they are so compact and versatile, telehandlers are capable of taking over the role of forklifts, cranes and scaffolding, allowing savings on plant expenses. They also allows work to be done more efficiently, saving time and therefore money, especially if using one means avoiding penalty payments for time over-runs. Rental options further expand their cost-saving capabilities.

BENEFITS OF USING A TELEHANDLER IN CONSTRUCTION Attaching a lifting winch turns a telehandler into a mobile crane, which means you don’t have to wait for a hire crane to show up, or to pay the hefty hire fee. Some telehandlers have a rotating upper section, and look and work in a similar way to cab-down rough-terrain cranes. Telehandlers are highly mobile and can be driven to most sites and locations. They are adept at navigating a range of working environments as they offer three different steering modes – front wheel, four wheel and crab steering. Models with 4-wheel-drive can cover the rough and uneven terrain common on building sites.

CUSTOMER PROFILE Camex Civil Waikato

“With telehandlers, we only need to send one machine to site instead of three different ones.” Waikato based civil drainage contractors Camex Civil have grown to be a dominant force in the site works, excavations and drainage sectors in the Waikato. Starting in 1998 as a one-man band, after 20 years now know a thing or two about getting jobs done in the most efficient manner. In 2017, Camex were experiencing significant growth, and their jobs had changed to the point that they were doing a lot more mobile work. “We needed machines that could be moved easily and quickly from one site to another,” said Resource Manager Toby Nicholl. Camex Civil now operate three Dieci telehandlers in their fleet of machinery. “We operate telehandlers because of their massive versatility,” commented Toby, “I only need to send one machine to site instead of three.” “The Dieci telehandlers will do the job of a wheeled loader, forklift and digger in one machine,” commented Toby, “we are still finding more jobs they can assist with, even after running them for over two years.” “The Dieci’s are quick and easy to change attachments, we can swap between pallet forks and buckets depending on the job without any fuss,” said Toby. They find the telehandlers more useful than wheel loaders, particularly when needing to reach over dirt piles. “The extendable boom makes it safer for us when working near trenches, as we can stay further away from the walls when backfilling,” said Toby. “The Dieci’s are pretty easy to teach the staff how to operate,” says Toby, “The controls are nice and simple, there is nothing sophisticated with the operation, and it only takes an hour or so to get them familiarised with the operation.”

CUSTOMER PROFILE Scott Construction Nelson

Scott Construction prides themselves in being an award-winning high end residential and commercial building company based in the South Island. Primarily based in Nelson which has around 75 builders, a range of apprentices right through to carpenters, Scott Construction have bases in Blenheim and Queenstown. Scott Construction runs a Dieci Icarus 40.17 Telehandler at their Nelson operation along with an older Dieci they acquired. Project Coordinator Brook Johnson likes running telehandlers on their construction projects because of their versatility. “It’s not just their ability to shift materials around on site, but the various attachments that they come with,” said Brook, “for example, the fly jib enables us to lift big 6x2 frames instead of using six guys to carry them into place. It now only takes three people and is much safer and faster.” Scott Construction has found that they can remove scaffolding earlier in build stages which enables them to get onto landscaping sooner. “If we need to get back up on the side of the buildings for painting, we use the man cage on the telehandler with its 17m reach. This saves us a lot of time and equipment through a whole build project,” said Brook.

“The thing that appealed to us about the Dieci brand was that we had familiar experience with the older model. It isn’t a huge machine, but the thing that stood out for us was the fact that it is over ten years old and nothing much has changed as far as the functionality,” said Brook, “Obviously the safety features and the technology that was in the new machine is state of the art but the way that it operates with the toggle switches, it was the same machine. This meant that guys who were familiar with the older model, were also able to easily adapt to this machine and use it as they need it.” Brook has found Webbline very easy to deal with. “Right from the moment they approached us, and we talked about options around how we wanted to finance it and how that side of it works. They’re accommodating in that area,” he said, “the whole process from communication from where our machine was on the voyage from there to New Zealand, we got regular updates.” “We found that when the machine arrived, we had some questions about the operation of the safety features,” said Brook, “Webbline was very knowledgeable about the product and quick to explain how they work.
