Welcome A huge welcome to the Sky Bet Ebor Festival featuring the flagship race of our season – the £1.5m Group 1 Juddmonte International. We are honoured and delighted to welcome Her Majesty The Queen back to York as our Royal Patron. We are hugely grateful to the connections who send their fantastic horses for this mouthwatering contest for us all to enjoy. Our thanks as well to both Juddmonte and The Horserace Betting Levy Board who have helped us stage the richest race we have ever hosted. For nearly four decades our showpiece race has been supported by Juddmonte and we remain hugely appreciative of their longstanding and tremendous backing. It is our particular pleasure to welcome all of Juddmonte’s guests and team today – as well as their homebred, Item, who is currently unbeaten on the Knavesmire! The Juddmonte International has twice been the Longines World’s Best Race in the last five years. The defending champion and current joint highest rated horse in the world is Godolphin’s five-year-old, Ombudsman, running on the back of Royal Ascot Group One glory. Carrying the torch for the Classic winning generation after his French Derby success is Coolmore’s Constitution River. For continental Europe it is Zaydaan, a French colt seeking his sixth consecutive victory carrying the famous silks of HH The Late Aga Khan. Almaqam, is the last horse to have beaten Ombudsman and Pride of Arras, who won the Dante and Great Voltigeur last season! As wider evidence of the global stature of the race, the winner will be in high demand at future big occasions. A berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland, Kentucky complete with travel expenses is the westbound option, a similar benefit operates for the Tattersalls Acomb champion to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Heading east, the Japan Racing Association kindly offer a $5 million bonus if the Juddmonte International winner takes the Group One Japan Cup. Marvellous though our feature race is, the rest of the card is also dripping with quality. The Group Two Sky Bet Great Voltigeur is a fascinating contest as well as being one that shapes the final Classic. In 2023, Continuous became the 15th colt to achieve the Knavesmire-Town Moor double; the top two in the sponsor’s market for Doncaster (Betfred Derby winner Christmas Day and runner up Maltese Cross) will be seeking to establish their claim to favouritism. As part of a new initiative this year, we are delighted to be partnering with Dubai Racing Club, meaning the winner has an automatic entry and travel package to the Group 2 Dubai City of Gold on Emirates Super Saturday at Meydan in February. The opening contest, the Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Stakes sees a field of 22 over the unusual distance of five and a half furlongs. It recognises the support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club and World Pool who are operating on each of the four days of Ebor for the first time. As explained on page [26] World Pool is a tremendous initiative in globalising World Pool betting and helping the sport we love. We are operating Tote Guarantee on-course today and if your bet with through your tote account, the tote are offering money back on 2nd in all York races. The Group Three Tattersalls Acomb has a field of eleven with both potential and quality. At around 2.35pm, a presentation will be made to Joe Fanning marking his retirement from the saddle after 35 years. In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the Grantley Hall Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room. Cheer the RAF Falcons as they drop in at 1.20pm, they will then return ahead of the Juddmonte International for the National Anthem, sung by professional soprano, Emily Guerin, in front of Her Majesty. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 9

The ﬁrst thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there accessible and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception. As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. We are now registered with the Access Card (nimbus) scheme which helps with advance booking. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. Can I bring my assistance dog? Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing? KNAVESMIRE TIP Stratusnine merits the utmost respect following his narrow defeat in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood earlier in the month, while the unexposed Corolla Point is another to arrive with strong form claims. MAGICAL MEMORIES: ROBERTO AND FRANKEL It was in 1972 that an idea that had been some years in the making became reality - a Group 1 race joined the then three-day Ebor Festival with the first running of the International, over a mile and a quarter, designed to attract the best of the classic generation and the best of the older brigade. If the York organisers were looking for a vote of confidence for their new idea, they more than got it, as the inaugural running produced a field of dreams. Brigadier Gerard was unbeaten at that stage in 15 races and the four-year-old lined up as hot favourite against the first two home in the Derby- the winner Roberto being ridden by the Panamanian Braulio Baeza after the late Lester Piggott who rode him at Epsom, decided to ride the runner up Rheingold that day. The stands were packed but the script wasn’t read by the entire

cast. Roberto set off in front and although Brigadier Gerard gave chase, Joe Mercer accepted the inevitable in the final furlong. The crowd were shocked, but in hindsight the Brigadier’s failure by 3 lengths to give weight to a Derby winner, when the first two both broke the course record may not have been the disaster some portrayed. York’s new race made the headlines and has continued to do so. To the wider world, Wednesday 22nd August 2012 was just another day, but to the record opening day crowd packed into the Knavesmire it was to be anything but with the 127 seconds at its heart, it is remembered clearly some fourteen years later. There was even an extra buzz at Kings Cross station that morning catching one of the early East Coast Expresses. The Guards on the train even mentioned a certain Frankel as we made our final approach to York Station.

It was to be Frankel’s 13th race - a perfect dozen won. But this Juddmonte International was different.

Could he dispatch fresh rivals with similar disdain, over 1 mile 2 furlongs and 88 yards as he had over a mile? His owner, the much-missed HH Prince Khalid Abdulla was in town and, despite the desperate signs of his illness so was trainer, Sir Henry Cecil. Those front row views of the pre parade have never filled so earlyit was an extraordinary sight. Frankel faced a surprisingly large number of rivals as a field of nine went to post, the biggest challengers being St Nicholas Abbey, who had finished third in the King George at Ascot after winning the Coronation Cup at Epsom - one of three challengers from Ballydoyle, while two other stable mates of Frankel- his regular companion Bullet Train and Twice Over- who had won the race the previous year. And there was Godolphin’s Farhh, whose rider Frankie Dettori observed wistfully “I’m sick of seeing the horse’s ar*e. A few applauded as Frankel went to post, and a few gasped as the great horse missed the break and was settled in the rear by jockey Tom Queally as Bullet Train cut out the early running. Turning for home, the crowd silence told its own story. The hero remained near last; then Queally made his move down the

stands side- the race was over with a furlong to go- Frankel won by 7 lengths. No one moved as Queally brought the Champion in front of the stands. And so to the Winners Enclosure - emotion almost tangible as the trainer removed his black fedora and walked forward to receive his prize as the call for “three cheers for Sir ‘enry” was deafeningly responded to. Lord Grimthorpe, Frankel’s Racing Manager in his first season in his “other job” as York Chairman so was on hand when the Prince raised the trophy. Speaking later, Teddy Grimthorpe joked when asked about Cecil’s health- ‘He’s in good spirits and devouring lobster’. So, whether fifty plus years or a mere decade and a bit have slipped by, the memories of great champions remain fresh. It was a day, now over a decade ago that still lives in the memory. Not just the race, but what happened afterwards. History repeating itself, in an interview reflecting on great racedays, a leading Newmarket Trainer said of August 2012 ‘The reception Sir Henry got that day is why I am such a proud Yorkshireman’ That trainer? William Haggas- who incidentally won in 2022 with another superstar, Baaeed.

WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM

Voltigeur was a famous Yorkshire-trained Classic winner Prize money who carried the colours of the Earl of Zetland, to victory £250,000 in both the Derby at Epsom and the St Leger in 1850. The Flying Dutchman had also landed the Derby-St Leger double the previous year. The so called “Great Match” between the pair was held at York the following spring, over two miles with £1,000 side stakes (a sum equivalent to £700,000 in today’s shops) and the Knavesmire was packed to bursting to see the Flying Dutchman win the money. Yet, in one of those quirks of history the battling Voltigeur won the hearts on the day and he is now remembered with this race, the 550 seat restaurant at York as well as being the horse featured in our logo.

DISTANCE Previously it had been the case that winning over 1m4f prior to the race hadn't been important. That has begun to change with Old Persian, Logician, Pyledriver, Yibir Deauville Legend and 2024 victor Los Angeles all previously winning over the trip. Therefore it could well pay to follow those with experience, last year's winner Pride Of Arras bucked this trend, with his most recent win coming over 1m2f in the Dante that previous year. WEIGHT Every horse is initially allotted 9st 2lb (8st 12lb until 2014) before penalties are given for previous wins at Group 1 or Group 2 level this season. Only four winners of the race have carried such penalties to victory since 1995. Pride Of Arras followed in the hoofsteps of Los Angeles became the latest to manage that feat last year. CONCLUSION While the record of those carrying penalties isn't great, Los Angeles carried a 5lb one to victory in 2024 and Pride Of Arras carried a 3lb one last year. Maltese Cross ticks almost every other box but would have to become the ﬁrst since Storm The Stars back in 2015 to win the race for William Haggas. Betfred Epsom Derby winner CHRISTMAS DAY also carries a 5lb penalty for that Group One victory and is marginally preferred from a trends perspective to Pierre Bonnard due to his victory over one mile four furlongs. The son of Camelot ﬁnished second last time out in the Irish Derby and is toward the front of the betting. KNAVESMIRE TIP Maltese Cross is bound to be popular after earning a first Group 1 success in the Grand Prix de Paris last month. That said, he was well held when second to CHRISTMAS DAY in the Derby and it would be no surprise to see the son of Camelot confirm that form. A subsequent second in the Irish Derby proved that his Epsom success was no fluke and Aidan O’Brien’s colt sets the standard. Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York. The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough. The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree. Coming up to date and Juddmonte Farms, sponsors of today’s feature race continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Established in 1977, Juddmonte Farms was set up by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah, who sadly passed in 2021. On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse. It is easy to appreciate how the offspring of great horses such as Frankel will feel a weight of expectation on their withers. The colt formerly trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil enjoyed his ﬁnest hour at York when landing the Juddmonte International for his connections in 2012 to make it thirteen, from an eventual fourteen unbeaten starts. Frankel’s stallion career continues to go from strength to strength, the fastest sire to a century of Group winners in history, to date, he has sired 42 individual Group One winners, over distances ranging from 6f - 20f. In total he’s sired 123 Group winners and in 2025 was the leading Tattersalls October Book 1 sire by cumulative sales and by average for the third year in a row. Based at Banstead Manor, the success of Juddmonte can be seen with Oasis Dream, a Champion at both two and three. The most famous of his offspring is probably classy ﬁlly Midday who landed six top-level victories during her career, including two notable successes here on the Knavesmire - the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Global Legends Yorkshire Oaks - as well as being narrowly denied in the Juddmonte International by stablemate Twice Over. Another of Oasis Dream’s sons, Muhaarar, continued the York connection. The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack winner subsequently added four Group 1s in 2015, en-route to being crowned Cartier Champion Sprinter and is now producing his own speedy sons and daughters. Fun fact, he sired 2023 Weatherbys Cheltenham bumper winner, A Dream To Share. Another smash hit in the bloodstock world has been Juddmonte’s exceptional miler, Kingman - a winner of seven of his eight starts, including four Group 1 victories, the son of Invincible Spirit has already produced 62 Group winners and a further 47 Stakes winners. They include Kinross, Palace Pier, Calyx, Headman, Commissioning, Domestic Spending, 2024 1000 Guineas winner Elmalka and Prix de Diane winner Sparkling Plenty, along with being the sire of Field of Gold (who will join next year’s roster after being retired in 2026), 2025 Irish 2000 Guineas and Gr.1 St James’s Palace winner. He operates at an impressive 21% blacktype performers to runners and 12% stakes winners to runners. What is evident is the strength in depth that Juddmonte possess. RECENT FORM Following on from being proven at the top level, it's been a good tactic to oppose any runners without a victory to their name this season, regardless of whether they ran well in defeat. Only Sulamani in 2004 and Roaring Lion in 2018 have won the Juddmonte International in recent seasons having not won a race earlier in the calendar. 2021 winner Mishriff had no domestic victory to his name but had recorded victories in Meydan and Saudi Arabia.

TRAINERS Sir Michael Stoute is the joint-most successful trainer in the race’s history with six victories but after his retirement, it falls to John & Thady Gosden and Aidan O'Brien, who are represented by Ombudsman & Devil's Advocate then Action, Constitution River and Hawk Mountain respectively. BETTING Arabian Queen’s victory at odds of 50/1 in 2015 certainly put a cat amongst the pigeons but on the whole, the Juddmonte International isn’t really a race for shocks. Prior to that you have to go back to Ezzoud’s success at 28/1 way back in 1993 to ﬁnd the only other big-priced winner. Favourites have a good record here having won six of the last ten renewals, while all the other winners in that time have been a single ﬁgure price. CONCLUSION OMBUDSMAN arrives to defend his crown after going three from three so far this season. He will have to become only the fourth ﬁve-year-old to win the race but is fancied to do so. Constitution River will likely give him most to think about, with the Ballydoyle representative also unbeaten this campaign, winning both the Group One French Derby and the Group One Sandown Eclipse. The Juddmonte International is part of the High Quality Horse Group’s four British Summer Elite Races alongside the July Cup, King George and Sussex Stakes. The Horserace Betting and Levy Board have kindly supported this initiative and contributed £100,000 to the prize fund.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A clash of the generations sees champion older horse OMBUDSMAN meet the very exciting Constitution River for the ﬁrst time. The latter cemented his position as the leading three-year-old middle-distance performer with an impressive display in the Eclipse, which followed on from his French Derby success to get the better of Hawk Mountain. That being said, he will need to improve again to stop the Gosdens’ superstar. The ﬁve-year-old emerged on the Group 1 scene in the 2025 Prince Of Wales’s at Royal Ascot and in this very contest 12 months ago, and arguably took his form to another level with a world-class performance back at the Royal meeting in June. He will get the ideal set-up once again from his pacemaker Devil’s Advocate. KNAVESMIRE TIP Small Fry was slightly unlucky when runner-up over 1m6f at Goodwood and will undoubtedly prove popular once again off a 4lb higher mark. However, the sixth from that contest, VALEDICTORY, may be worth another chance. Abandoned Racing

In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on badges and tickets purchased will only be paid in the following circumstances. a) before the ﬁrst race - 100% refund. b) before the completion of three races. c) thereafter - no refund applies. The terms of the insurance scheme which racegoers had the option to purchase at time of booking shall apply. Refunds cannot be made on racedays. To obtain a refund, racegoers who purchased their admission on the day should send the ticket they were given on entrance with their full name and address to: York Racecourse, York, YO23 1EX within 30 days. Racegoers who booked in advance direct with the track and so paid by card will receive an automatic refund. A similar process will apply for those who paid in advance by cheque. Alcohol And Public Order

The Racecourse takes its responsibilities under Licensing Laws very seriously and puts in place training and measures to exceed these obligations. Racegoers are urged to drink responsibly. Alcohol cannot be brought into the stands side enclosures. York Racecourse reserves the right to expel any person found to be drunk or behaving in a disorderly manner. The “Challenge 25” initiative will be in operation to ensure that only those aged 18 and over are served with alcohol. Thank you for your support of this obligation.

Cameras

Please feel free to take a souvenir photo of your day. However we would remind you that the preparation and performance of the sport must be ensured, so please note:1. Kindly refrain from ﬂash photography. 2. Avoid taking photos in restricted areas used by the sporting professionals i.e. Saddling Boxes, Stables, Unsaddling Boxes & Weighing Room. 3. Respect the privacy of others.

Cigarettes and e-cigarettes

The current smoking legislation regarding smoking in public places applies at the racecourse. The use of e-cigarettes is permitted, however they will be treated the same as tobacco products.

Common Courtesy/Entry Conditions

All persons visiting York Racecourse are admitted subject to Racecourse Regulations and the Rules of Racing. The Racecourse reserves the right to refuse admission or remove from the racecourse any person refusing to comply with the Rules and Regulations or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others. Dogs

Racegoers are requested to leave their pets including all dogs at home. Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome.

HBLB

The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry

First Aid

There are ﬁrst aid posts in the Edwardian Weighing Room, other such buildings have been designated as isolation rooms, should they be required.

Dress Standards

Most racegoers like to make racing at York a special occasion and choose to dress accordingly. Gentlemen (and those identifying as such) in the County Stand required to wear a jacket, collared shirt and tie. It has always been the case that shorts and t-shirts have been welcome in Grandstand and Paddock. All racegoers are reminded that the removal of shirts is not encouraged and that basic decency and not causing offence to fellow racegoers by clothing choices, is required. York Racecourse reserves the right to refuse or, to require anyone to leave who does not observe the above code.

Drugs

A zero tolerance policy on drug abuse is in force, be warned, North Yorkshire Police and our own team are watching with some canine help, sniffing.

Litter

Racegoers are requested to place all litter in the receptacles provided. If you do not need your racecard please place it in a bin as you leave the racecourse.

Noise

So that the horses have the best chance to perform and so your fellow racegoers have the opportunity to enjoy them please do not cause any distractions; the waving of ﬂags or banners, use of radios or making of sudden noises are examples of things to avoid. Racegoers are reminded of Public Health England advice that shouting increases the risk of the spread of diseases, so to consider wearing your face covering when part of a cheering crowd.

Parade Ring

For safety reasons children under the age of twelve are not permitted into the Parade Ring or Unsaddling Enclosure.

Photo Finishes And Stewards’ Enquiries/Objections

In any race where Photo Finish has been called by the Judge, this information will be displayed on the Giant Screen. An announcement will also be broadcast. Race Results and Photographs will also be displayed on the York Racecourse television monitors.

Radios and Mobile Telephones

The use of all types of communication equipment is strictly controlled at all racecourses. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc., for any purpose at the racecourse.

Track Safety

For your own safety and the welfare of the horses, jockeys and stable staff please keep off the track. Anyone trespassing on the track: Will be liable to arrest and prosecution Will be ejected immediately Will be banned from all future York race meetings May face a nationwide racecourse ban. 95
