OFFICIAL RACECARD | £4.00 WEDNESDAY MAY 14TH

D ANTE F ESTIVAL 2025 F E AT URING T H E T AT TERSA LLS M USIDORA S TA K E S G ROUP 3

Welcome A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the opening day of our 2025 season, the first of 18 exciting racedays this season that we look forward to hosting. Since we last raced, we are all honoured and proud to have collected some awards for our 2024 season, notably the Juddmonte International being ranked at Longines World’s Best Horse Race and York being recognised as Overall Showcase Champions at the RCA Showcase Awards. Please see page 44. Thank you for your support last year, we are striving to keep improving your experience again this year. York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport, so attracting the best horses to the Knavesmire, for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival is more than £1.5m as part of the £12m across the season. This year, every race at York will be run for at least £25,000 – the highest of any racecourse in Britain so rewarding a wide set of connections. Let’s hope we see a similar quality of winners to last year when the winners of all four Group Two contests this week became Group One victors by Christmas (for the curious, from this equivalent day, Mill Stream landed the July Cup after his Knavesmire sprint triumph.) Today’s Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora sees six blue blooded fillies looking to stake their claim on Betfred Oaks glory. The Gosden’s Clarehaven stable has won an incredible six Musidoras in the last decade, Go Go Boots flies their flag today. If the fillies are about showing middle distance potential, then the sprinters in the Group Two 1895 Duke of York Clipper Stakes are about speed. The proven Group One winner in the field is Inisherin, trained locally by Kevin Ryan. Both Rage of Bamby and Flora of Bermuda have course and distance victories, whilst Karl Burke has a better than 33% chance of success based on his three runners for a field of eight! If you need more informed help finding the winner, then try the “SmartView” version of the form on page 43, by kind courtesy of the Racing Post along with a link to the other six races. The winner of our opening race today can reserve itself a berth in those supersize stalls for the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 23 August, as it is one of three Sky Bet backed “Race to the Ebor” contests at York, with a fourth being held at The Curragh on 4 June (see page 21 for details). The prize funds for these races can only be achieved through your attendance and the fabulous backing of our sponsors. Many thanks to Tattersalls, Clipper, Churchill Tyres, Sky Bet, the European Breeders’ Fund, and Conundrum HR Consulting for their much-appreciated support. The team have been busy preparing for your return, it is the first Dante Festival for the award-winning Bustardthorpe Development (see pages 32-33), enjoy the Churchill Tyres Lawn, Theakston or Guinness Bars to wash down some fresh, local Fish ‘n’ Chips. Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is back with us; do go and say hello to him and our partner team from New Beginnings. This week Racing Welfare are leading the sport through Mental Health Awareness Week, we are proud to play our part. The “sunflower” benches spread around the course offer a chance for a quiet moment of reflection. A final thought and prayer goes out to Stuey Weston, a regular at this meeting who loved his “get out stakes kitty”. His friends celebrate the man, whose presence today they will miss, by our last race. I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day and season ahead.

A WINTER’S TALE: WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?

NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES CHAMPAGNE LAWNS

Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get a summer shower. For the October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air. Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table.

MR MOWITALL Joining the grounds team over winter were a couple of robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself.

THE TEAM NEVER REST Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 6,000 pints of paint have been used by the team this winter and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!). 8

A LIVING FLOWER WALL

OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND

The flowers are petunia and petchoa, grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.

THE BARS HAVE IT Over the Winter a number of bars have been given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Prosecco Bar next door. The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie.

NEW ON THE MENU Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering. If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes. Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza fresh baked Moët Roof Terrace.

The William Hill Betting Shops (Bustardthorpe End, Knavesmire Stand ground floor and front of Melrose Stand) offer a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.

BAR CLOSING TIMES Key bars will remain open up to 90 minutes after the last race. The serving of drinks in hospitality areas, will be as specified in your booking details. Have an enjoyable time with us but please respect our neighbours and the wider city as you leave the racecourse.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 11

Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai is proud to be supporting two Group 2 features - the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes – races which continue to form an integral part of our partnership with York Racecourse and our wider international sponsorship portfolio. This year we have extended our support to include title sponsorship of the new Al Basti Equiworld , Dubai Summer Saturday on 28th June which combines exciting Group 3 action on the track with post-racing entertainment to match, ahead of our return in August for the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes in August. Congratulations are due to York Racecourse Chairman, Bridget Guerin, and the York Racecourse Committee for their continued commitment to continually improving the quality of racing on the Knavesmire and ever increasing prize money which I am sure will prove to be a compelling proposition for owners and trainers throughout the season. I wish them and all those involved with staging of today’s meeting horses a pleasant and successful day.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. RaceiQ Par Times A new statistics based predictor, it is the expected win time for a specific race based on the track, distance, going, race class and conditions. Based on the going at time of printing the day before racing at 16:00, being: GOOD TO FIRM, GOOD (IN PLACES) Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

P RLEZ-VOUS R CING? ESSENTIAL RACING PHRASES FOR THE BEGINNER It could be easy to be put off by the weird and wonderful words and phrases banded around the racecourse, but in fact, its all part of the fun. Like a tourist in a foreign country, the novice racegoer soon picks up enough of the language to get by, and then rapidly becomes fluent.

The following terms will provide any newcomer, keen to enhance their language skills, with just enough of the jargon to sound like a ‘local’: RACING SPEAK ENGLISH ALLOWANCE: .......................The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience. AMATEUR: .............................(Rider) on racecards, their names are usually prefixed by Mr, Mrs, etc. To indicate their amateur licence holder status. ANTE-POST: ..........................Betting (usually for the most important races) days or even months before the race is due to take place. APPRENTICE:........................Young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while they are learning. BACKWARD: .........................Young horse which needs time to mature. CLERK OF THE COURSE:...Official in charge of running the racing programme, at York it is Anthea Leigh. CLERKS OF THE SCALES: .Key in the delivery of a successful racing operation, Wayne Burnell & Alex Porter are in charge of things today. COLOURS:..............................The racing silks worn by the jockeys. COLT: ......................................Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old. CONNECTIONS:....................The owner and trainer of a racehorse. COURSE SPECIALIST:..............Horse which tends to run well at a particular course. DAM:........................................Mother of a horse. DISTANCE: .............................The length of a race. DISTANCE, THE: ...................An unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post. DRAW: ....................................Describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn two days before a flat race. EACH-WAY: ...........................A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed. FILLY: ......................................Female horse up to four years old. All horses in the Tattersalls Musidora at 3:45pm. FOAL:......................................Horse of either sex from its birth until 1 January the following year. FORECAST: ...........................Name the first and second in the correct order. FURLONG: .............................220 yards (one eighth of a mile). GELDING:...............................Castrated horse. GOING: ...................................Description of the course conditions under foot. HAND:.....................................Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured at the shoulder. JACKPOT: ..............................The Jackpot is an exciting tote bet that requires punters to pick the winners of four consecutive races. A RACECOURSE FOR ALL We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme. The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there accessible and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. Can I bring my assistance dog? Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing? Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

This season sees the latest staging of the famous race as part of a an extensive partnership with Leeds-based Sky Bet. York Racecourse and its longstanding partner are committed to both cherishing and yet developing the track’s most famous race. Today sees the next instalment of a series entitled the “Race To The Ebor” which includes four high-class staying contests, including an Irish race held at The Curragh. The four races nominated for the “Race To The Ebor” are: Sky Bet Melrose Sky Bet Jorvik Sky Bet Stakes Sky Bet Grand Cup Handicap (3YO only) Handicap (4YO+) (Handicap, 4YO+) (Listed, 4YO+) York - 1m 6f Saturday 24 August 2024

York - 1m 4f Wednesday 14 May 2025

The Curragh - 1m 6f Wednesday 4 June 2025

York - 1m 6f Saturday 14 June 2025

Sky Bet Ebor (Handicap 4YO+)

York - 1m 6f Saturday 23 August 2025

The winners of the four races above will be guaranteed a start position in the Sky Bet Ebor of 2025 provided they are entered and confirmed in the normal way. In a further boost to connections, if these horses run in the Sky Bet Ebor 2025 and fail to finish in the top eight places, they will have their entry fee to the race (worth £5,000) refunded, the top eight receive £5,000 or more in prize money. In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process. To complement this initiative York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls, able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration. After his success in the Sky Bet Melrose last August, we know that Tom Clover’s charge, Tabletalk already has a “golden ticket”.

RACE DESCRIPTION Welcome back. We start with a handicap. Such races are designed for close competition, with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance, seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best will be the highest rated horse; See Hector carrying the colours of Mr Malih Al Basti, being the highest rated horse in this race. The winner is guaranteed a start in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor itself (subject to key criteria), hence the unusual title, see the dedicated page in this racecard to learn more. Use the Press Selections Board by the Winners Enclosure to guide you or give you someone to blame.

KNAVESMIRE TIP William Haggas won the 2021 and 2022 editions of this race and The Reverend is likely to be another popular choice for the Newmarket trainer. However, on the forecast going, the up-and-coming ALMOSH’HER could be the way to go as he switches to turf after a gutsy win at Kempton on his handicap debut in March. Now with Karl Burke, the son of Sea The Stars edges the vote based on his obvious potential. Stressfree, Paradias and Max Mayhem are other solid contenders.

EXPLORE IT TODAY Bustardthorpe End Development Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the most recent focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand. Today you can see a multi-million pound project that improves this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers, it was opened in last August by HM The Queen and is now ready for you to enjoy. We’d value your feedback, as with any new development it should come on for the run. The Roberto Pavilion provides a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar. As well as, tote & William Hill outlets. The Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy should be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar & dedicated Guinness Bar that flank it. Enjoy the sounds of The Monotones before, during and after the sporting action. A state of the art William Hill betting shop completes the development, as well a new block of toilets. In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples. We are proud that has already picked up an award for environmental sustainability, at the Racecourse Association Showcase.

32

The Roberto Pavillion

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE: • • •

• • • •

Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings. A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar. Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop. Two new racegoer lawns with the overaching Churchill Tyres canopy, similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace. Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities. Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility. Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.

We hope you enjoy it.

2nd Race 2.42 The Churchill Tyres Stakes Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)

6f Handicap 0-105 £60,000 4+ Farside

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION Again, a handicap, this time for horses rated between 86 and 105. Like in the game of cricket a rating of 100 denotes a good performer. The shorter distance of only six furlongs usually makes for a tight finish. So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see Bergerac is one of four to carry the consonants.

KNAVESMIRE TIP With plenty of pace drawn high, TWO TRIBES could be ideally berthed in stall 15. The Richard Spencer-trained four-year-old made a pleasing seasonal debut when third in a heritage handicap at Newmarket 11 days ago and should relish this return to York. Change Sings and Secret Guest also appeal from the high numbers, while the revitalised Mister Sox commands respect bidding for a four-timer. Kevin Ryan has won the last two renewals and has other notable each-way options in the form of We Never Stop and Bergerac.

FANTASY RAC S

TATTERSALLS MUSIDORA

There is always a healthy debate in sport about comparisons over the generations, our fantasy race below is our contribution to the chatter.

1988

DIMINUENDO (USA)

Ch f Diesis — Cacti (USA) (Tom Rolfe) Owner: Sheikh Mohammed Trainer: H. R. A. Cecil Jockey: Steve Cauthen Unraced as a two-year-old, victory in the 1988 Tattersalls Musidora was the first of Diminuendo’s career following second and third place finishes in the Nell Gwyn and 1000 Guineas respectively at Newmarket. The four-length Musidora win when 8/13 favourite showed her to be smart and she fulfilled the potential by going on to win the Oaks at Epsom and the Irish Oaks. Returning to the Knavesmire in the August, she ran out an impressive five-length winner of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks before being pipped by just a length in the St Leger at Doncaster.

1989 SNOW BRIDE (USA)

Ch f Blushing Groom (FR) — Awaasif (CAN) (Snow Knight) Owner: Saeed Maktoum Al Maktoum Trainer: H. R. A. Cecil Jockey: Steve Cauthen A third successive Tattersalls Musidora success for Henry Cecil and Steve Cauthen. Unbeaten in two races as a juvenile, Snow Bride lost her 100% record when fifth in the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket. Yet 12 days later she restored her reputation when running on strongly to get the better of Pilot by a length-and-a-half before adding the Epsom Oaks to her CV when inheriting victory after Ailysa, the first past the post, was disqualified. She signed off her racing career by winning the Princess Royal Stakes at Ascot.

1995 PURE GRAIN

B f Polish Precedent (USA) — Mill Line (Mill Reef (USA)) Owner: R Barnett Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Jockey: John Reid A game winner by a length of the 1995 renewal, Pure Grain went on to win the Darley Irish Oaks at The Curragh in impressive fashion. That victory had followed a podium finish in at Epsom. An impressive Group 1 double was completed when she returned to the Knavesmire to land the Darley Yorkshire Oaks in thrilling fashion in that August.

1997 REAMS OF VERSE (USA)

Ch f Nureyev (USA) — Modena (USA) (Roberto (USA)) Owner: K Abdulla Trainer: H. R. A. Cecil Jockey: Kieren Fallon Three times a winner as a two-year-old, including in the Fillies’ Mile at Ascot, she bounced back from finishing sixth in the 1,000 Guineas in the most eye-catching of fashion, coming home at York some 11 lengths clear under Kieren Fallon. Odds on for the Epsom Classic as a result, she duly delivered.

2002 ISLINGTON (IRE)

B f Sadler’s Wells (USA) — Hellenic (Darshaan) Owner: Lord Weinstock Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Jockey: Kieren Fallon Victory in the 2002 Tattersalls Musidora set Islington on the path to four Group 1 wins in a glittering career. Success in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and back here on the Knavesmire in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks in her Classic season. Narrowly beaten at the highest level in her subsequent starts, she had to wait a year for her next win as she made it back-to-back successes in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks. A well-deserved Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mares Turf was to be the fourth top honour of her career.

2009 SARISKA

B f Pivotal — Maycocks Bay (Muhtarram (USA)) Owner: Lady Bamford Trainer: M. L. W. Bell Jockey: Jamie Spencer The first of a hat-trick of wins came in clear-cut fashion in the 2009 Tattersalls Musidora, Sariska staying on strongly for a three and three-quarter length success. When following up in the Investec Oaks, she ended a lean spell for York winners in the Epsom Classic. The Darley Irish Oaks completed Sariska’s hat-trick before she finished second in a thrilling battle with Dar Re Mi for the Darley Yorkshire Oaks back here on the Knavesmire.

2021 SNOWFALL (JPN)

B f Deep Impact (JPN) - Best In The World (IRE)) Owner: Mr D. Smith, Mrs J. Magnier, Mr M. Tabor Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore A subsequent emphatic three-time Group One winner, Snowfall was a runaway winner of the 2021 Tattersalls Musidora. She went onto achieve glory in the Epsom Oaks, the first since Sariska, before going back to Ireland where she won the Irish equivalent, returning in August to add the Darley backed Yorkshire version.

2023 SOUL SISTER (IRE)

B f Frankel — Dream Peace (IRE) (Dansili) Owner: Lady Bamford Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: Frankie Dettori Lady Bamford already has her silks on this list, so it was perhaps no surprise to see Soul Sister join Sariska on the roll of honour. Those silks and the name Gosden have become synonymous with this race, with the Clarehaven based trainer winning this eight times. He now sits one behind the record holding, Sir Henry Cecil. The daughter of Frankel was an emphatic winner of the contest and went onto become the eighth filly to do the Tattersalls Musidora, Epsom Oaks double.

The 1895 Duke of York Clipper Stakes FACT FILE:

Where does the race name come from?

WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

Distance Six furlongs (1,207 metres)

Prize money £150,000

The 1895 Duke of York Clipper Stakes, named in honour of Prince George, Duke of York (later King George V.) was introduced at York’s August meeting in 1895. Back then it was a middle-distance race for three-year-olds before it morphed into a six furlong handicap in May 1950, became a conditions race in 1968, achieved Group 3 status in 1971 and was promoted to a Group 2 in 2003.

This is one of the first major six furlong sprints so provides clues as to where the top honours will end up in the speed division.

FIRST MODERN ERA WINNER?

Joe Mercer partnered the John Sutcliffe-trained Hard Water to victory in 1968.

DO THESE HORSES FEATURE ELSEWHERE AFTERWARDS?

Joe Mercer

The Roll of Honour includes Indian Ridge (1989), Royal Applause (1997), Invincible Spirit (2002) and Monsieur Bond (2004) all of which became top-class stallions after their racing days were over. 2021 winner Starman and 2024 winner Mill Stream went onto achieve more Group One glory. The 2022 winner, Highfield Princess, went on to triple Group One success, making John Quinn’s flagbearer one of the very best to win the race.

DOES LIGHTNING STRIKE TWICE? 46

Handsome Sailor

Handsome Sailor is the only horse to win the race twice. He took the prize in 1987 and 1988. Add in a Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes and a triumph in the Prix de l’Abbaye confirms that he was a smart sort. In his hat-trick bid he could finish only 9th. There is no defending champ in today’s field.

LEADING TRAINER? Barry Hills has seven victories - Noble Mark (1974), Flash n’ Thunder (1980), Jester (1982), Handsome Sailor (1987, 1988), Royal Applause (1997) and Prime Defender (2010).

Barry Hills

LEADING RIDER? Michael Hills, Lester Piggott and Steve Cauthen each won the race four times. Of the current crop, Ryan Moore and Oisin Murphy are the only two to have previously ridden a winner in this contest. They ride Inisherin and Night Raider respectively. Michael Hills

KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY Michael Hills, another son of Barry, rode four winners whilst Gianfranco Dettori won aboard Three Legs (not literally) in 1976 so his son Frankie continued to build the family connection when winning on Lend A Hand (2000), Delegator (2011) and Magical Memory (2016).

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Combining the business sense and love of racing of Yorkshire Owner, Steve Parkin, this name will combine breeding, ownership and twist on syndicate membership.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE? Venture Capitalist gave David “Dandy” Nicholls his first Group winner in 1996 whilst Bollin Joanne (1998) and Pipalong (2001) gave Malton trainer Tim Easterby a brace of victories. Bryan Smart scored with Monsieur Bond in 2004 and in 2007 Amadeus Wolf provided the first of Kevin Ryan’s two winners in the race – Tiddliwinks (2012) being the other so far. Highfield Princess gave Yorkshire another success for local trainer John Quinn before coming back later in the season to win the Coolmore Wotton Bassett Nunthorpe! Today a trio of runners from Karl Burke fly the Yorkshire flag in the form of Elite Status, Marshman and Night Raider. Inisherin completes a Northern quartet for Kevin Ryan. Highfield Princess

INTRODUCTION The 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes is a sprint of the highest quality and there are some real speedsters on its roll of honour. As is always the case, this year’s renewal looks well up to standard with Group One winner Inisherin at the front of the betting. AGE The successes of Starman, Invincible Army, Harry Angel, Azure Blue and Mill Steam in the last six years have solidified the dominance of four-year-old’s in recent years. Highfield Princess was the only five-year-old in the last nine renewals to take the prize, will four-year-olds continue their domination today? GROUP FORM With the exception of Tiddliwinks in 2012, the previous twelve winners had all won at Listed level or better earlier in their careers and therefore it would seem fruitless supporting a runner that is yet to prove themselves. However, only Society Rock, Maarek and Harry Angel had already won a Group 1 prior to winning here. TRAINER FORM No recent trainer has asserted their dominance over this race from a winning perspective, but Kark Burke is once again well represented with Elite Status, Marshman and Night Raider.

Going G G G G/S G/F G/F S G G S

RECENT FORM Race fitness has proved an important factor in recent seasons, 2021 winner Starman defied that trend when winning here after a 207 day break. Invincible Army had a run prior to winning in 2019 but like Starman the 2018 winner Harry Angel also won off a break. Mill Steam followed in the footsteps of recent winners Highfield Princess and Azure Blue by having the benefit of at least one run earlier that season. BETTING The fact that Harry Angel and Invincible Army were only the fourth and fifth winning favourites in the last 14 years suggests that this is a race in which the market leader can be opposed. However Mill Stream did buck that trend last year when winning as 4/1 joint favourite. Equally, there have also been some shock results during the same period; including Glass Office’s victory at 40/1 and Tiddliwinks’ success at 25/1, so if you do fancy a horse at a big-price don’t be put off. KEY TRENDS Won previously at Listed level Aged four Run this season

CONCLUSION The obvious place to start is with Inisherin for the Kevin Ryan. Last season’s Commonwealth Cup winner is the only Group One winner in the field and ticks the all important age box of being four. The only real negative next to his name is the lack of a recent run, which has been important in previous years. Royal Zabeel has been on the go the most of all this years runners but looks to lack the ability at this level. Karl Burke has the strongest hand of all, but the preference and pick of his would be NIGHT RAIDER. The four-year-old has already won a Listed event this year and looks ready to make the step into Group company. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 48

RACE DESCRIPTION Here, top class sprinters can hit 40mph in our first Pattern race of 2025. This Group 2 six-furlong sprint is towards the pinnacle of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, spread over four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. Runners of the same sex and age are expected to carry the same weight. Weight allowances are made for the variation in strength of 3yos and fillies, see how Rage of Bamby is one of two to benefit as a filly, with no 3year old representation today. Upwards adjustments could also be made, those with recent previous success in yet higher company get weight added back on; Inisherin dodges the burden as his big race win was last June. Perhaps, visit the Parade Ring to make your final selection.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Inisherin backed up a Group 2 win at Haydock with a ready success in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last June, although he was beaten twice at the top level subsequently. Having had a wind problem addressed since he was last seen, the son of Shamardal merits a close look here. Nevertheless, FLORA OF BERMUDA could be the way to go, as she is a previous C&D winner, who has done nothing but progress in the face of some high-profile assignments. The improving Night Raider could be the pick of Karl Burke’s three contenders.

The Tattersalls Distance Musidora Stakes

One mile, two furlongs and 56 yards (2,050 metres)

FACT FILE: WHO WAS MUSIDORA?

THE AUSSIE ANGLE?

Musidora was part of five Classic victories for the partnership of Charles Elsey and Edgar Britt. A lightweight rider who hailed from Sydney. A brace of Darley Yorkshire Oaks triumphs were also on a successful CV. Britt passed away in his native land, in January 2016, aged 103.

Prize money £130,000

Musidora, named after Jeanne Roques who was a famous French star in the silent movies, was a real superstar of the late 1940s. She was trained at Malton by the legendary Captain Charles Elsey to win the 1949 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Betfred Epsom Oaks just a few weeks later.

WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

As one of the first Pattern races for three-year-old fillies, it lets connections see how their fillies have matured over the winter.

FIRST WINNER? Ambergris, trained by Harry Wragg and ridden by Lester Piggott, she was the 4-9 favourite sparking a five year winning run for ‘The Jolly’.

Lester Piggott

WHY A CLASSIC TRIAL?

Simples - since 1961, eight winners have won the Betfred Oaks - Noblesse (1963), Bireme (1980), Diminuendo (1988), Snow Bride (1989), Reams Of Verse (1997), Sariska (2009), Snowfall (2021) & Soul Sister (2023). A number of near misses, notably Emily Upjohn, the 2022 winner who came so close on the Downs.

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH?

Irish-trained fillies have won eight times overall. Paddy Prendergast secured a hat-trick from 1963 to 1965 with Noblesse, Ela Marita and Arctic Melody. Vincent O’Brien won it with Where You Lead in 1973 whilst Jim Bolger has also won it three times courtesy of Condessa (1981), Give Thanks (1983) and Lush Lashes (2008). Aidan O’Brien had his first win in the race back in 2021 with Snowfall. The County Tipperary yard is represented today by Whirl. 54 Lush Lashes

The late Sir Henry Cecil won an astonishing nine times –Fatah Flare (1985), Indian Skimmer (1987), Diminuendo (1988), Snow Bride (1989), All At Sea (1992), Magnificient Style (1996), Reams Of Verse (1997), Passage Of Time (2007) and Aviate (2010). The recently retired Sir Michael Stoute and the Gosden duo are on eight wins a piece. With Sir Michael hanging up his training licence, it falls to Go Go Boots to add to the Clarehaven tally.

LEADING RIDER? Top US rider Steve Cauthen, was aboard Last Feather (1982), then benefited as retained jockey to Sir Henry Cecil between 1985-89 so rode five winners. In 2023,Frankie Dettori took his tally to seven victories with Soul Sister and despite calling time on British racing, his record will likely last for many years to come. Of the current crop, Ryan Moore and William Buick have both ridden two winners, today only Ryan Moore has a ride, with Whirl hoping to make it three wins.

HAT-TRICK HEAVEN

Garnie Bougoure rode a hat-trick of winners from 1963 to 1965 and Brian Taylor followed suit from 1966 to 1968. Twenty years later Steve Cauthen achieved the same remarkable treble from 1987 to 1989. Frankie Dettori became the latest treble-riding jockey in 2017.

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Tattersalls are Europe’s largest Bloodstock Auctioneers and the world’s oldest, dating back to 1766. From Park Paddocks in Newmarket, Tattersalls offers more than 5,000 thoroughbreds each year. The nine different sales include market leaders in every category. Today will see another page written in the history of this significant contest.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Since the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes was first run in 1961 only one Yorkshire stable has managed to win it. That accolade goes to Middleham’s Mark Johnston who saddled Secret History to victory in 2005 and then Rose Of Kildare to success in 2020’s renewal. Yorkshire is not represented today.

INTRODUCTION The Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes is regarded as a trial for next month’s Betfred Oaks at Epsom but is also a valuable prize in its own right, boasting a six-figure prize fund. Since this race was first run in 1961 eight fillies have gone on to win both events – Noblesse was the first in 1963 and the most recent was 2023 superstar Soul Sister.

TRAINER FORM John Gosden is the most successful trainer with a runner this year. He won this race for the first time in 1993 courtesy of Marillette and has since added seven further victories. In fact, those seven successes have all come since 2011, with his most recent victory coming courtesy of Soul Sister in 2023, today he has the well fancied Go Go Boots. GROUP FORM 2021 winner Snowfall continued the trend of having run in a Group race before turning up here. She ran in no fewer than four Group races as a juvenile. Whereas 2022 Emily Upjohn went against that trend when winning the 2022 renewal, having only ever run in Novice Stakes. In this years field only Go Go Boots, Serenity Prayer and Tattycoram haven’t contested either a Listed or Group contest.

TWO-YEAR-OLD FORM Past winners in recent seasons had mostly been competing at a high level during their juvenile season. Both Rose Of Kildare and Snowfall had remarkably busy two-year-old campaigns, with the former having five wins from eleven starts. Continuing this thread, horses who have had a busier two-year-old campaign tend to perform better however Soul Sister, Emily Upjohn and Shutter Speed all had a quieter one and were all trained at Clarehaven. So don’t let Go Go Boots lack of experience put you off.

RECENT FORM Nine from the previous twelve winners had at least one run that season, with four of those having won that engagement. Only Miss Tonnerre and Smoken haven’t had a run this campaign. BETTING The Tattersalls Musidora has often been a race for punters but more recently there has been a shift away from favourites. Four of the last ten winners were favourites however only one of the last seven winners was sent off favourite. KEY TRENDS Trained by John Gosden Run this season Two-year-old form

CONCLUSION Six go to post for what looks a cracking renewal of the Tattersalls Musidora. Both proven pattern form and the more unknown quantities are on show, with Aidan O’Brien’s Whirl bringing a whole host of experience to the table. The daughter of Wootton Bassett was beaten on her only start as a three-year-old but is already a Group winner as a juvenile. She may well be the type to bounce straight back to form. Smoken was a Listed winner at two but we’ve yet to see her this season however Ralph Beckett is excellent at training the fairer sex. The marginal preference is for GO GO BOOTS, who will be hoping to follow in the hoofsteps of Soul Sister. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 56

RACE DESCRIPTION Also, part of the Pattern race pyramid is the Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora, restricted to 3yo old fillies only, it provides a pure comparison. All are set to carry the same 9st 2lb weight. Look out for the trio marked as entered in the Betfred Oaks as eight fillies have already done the York/Epsom double. Time to consider your ante post bets for 31st May on the Downs! At this time of year, in form stables or riders could be key, so check the stats table before the race.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Whirl has something to prove after finishing sixth on her seasonal debut in a Group 3 over 1m at the Curragh last month, although she is a potential improver now stepping up in distance. However, the unbeaten SMOKEN ended last year’s campaign with a cosy victory in the Montrose at Newmarket. Ralph Beckett’s filly is one to follow and her upward trajectory may continue. Serenity Prayer and Go Go Boots have yet to taste to defeat as well, which adds further spice to the mix.

RACE DESCRIPTION Back to competitive handicap conditions, this time for horses rated between 76 and 95, remember those nearest that ceiling are considered the best and will carry more weight. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and here the upper rating of 95 means that the spotlight will not be stolen by a proven superstar. KNAVESMIRE TIP The combination of a break and gelding procedure worked a treat for the recent Windsor winner RARE CHANGE and a quick-fire double may beckon. Richard Hughes’ charge powered clear in the closing stages that day and a 6lb penalty shouldn’t prevent another bold showing. Dangers are aplenty, headed by the hat-trick seeking Red Sand, who may have more to come now entering handicaps. Jolly Roger and Gallant are the pick of the remainder.

6th Race 4.55 The British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)

Distance: Race Type: Prize Money: Age: Stalls:

5f Novice £40,000 2c&g Farside

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our penultimate race is for 2yo colts and geldings that are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that the horse’s sire is registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe. It’s the first season for all these runners meaning level weights, though previous success warrants an additional burden, notice how Under The Radar rather isn’t flying that way, after his recent Thirsk victory. In tipping terms, it is a choice of the “Ps”, pedigree or pin.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: SHADOW ARMY Trainer: Richard Fahey Jockey: Daniel Tudhope Age/Weight: 2-9-2 SP: 9/2JF Runners: 11 Shadow Army dwelt leaving the stalls and was anchored in rear by Daniel Tudhope. The pair switched right one-furlong out and despite being short of room, plugged on to score narrowly.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Under The Radar (fourth) finished behind Bravo Hotel (third) on his debut at Pontefract in April, before going on to win comfortably at Thirsk earlier this month. The Profitable colt will have more on under the penalty, though, and it is UTMOST RESPECT that edges preference. Richard Fahey won this with the useful Shadow Army 12 months ago and this son of Invincible Spirit, who fetched 220,000gns at the Craven Breeze-Ups last month, could be of a similar mould. Ballistic Missile is also noted.

Stuey Weston & Friends “Getting Out” Stakes Our friend Stuart loved the Dante meeting beyond all others. Wherever he was working in the world, he’d always make sure he made the pilgrimage back to the Knavesmire to enjoy the action with his mates. The first day is always the best because everybody comes to it fresh and full of hope, and the over-indulgence of the previous days isn’t casting its shadow on proceedings. A day with far too much time spent on the champagne lawn would precede the highlight of the afternoon - the communal bet on the lucky last, or the “’Getting Out Stakes’ as we liked to call it. This is the third year Stuart isn’t here to celebrate with us, having died unexpectedly at just 49-years old, but his friends are here to raise a glass, have a bet and remember him. If you’d like to join in, please look around you and enjoy the precious time you get with your friends. Think about picking one horse in his race and all backing it so you can cheer it home together. Most importantly, raise a glass to one another and feel privileged to be here at the best racecourse in the world in one of the most beautiful cities. Stuart loved it, and so do we. From all Stuart’s friends and colleagues

RACE DESCRIPTION We finish the day almost where we began, with another puzzle to solve; a final handicap, this time for horses aged 4yo and up, rated 66-85 and back over the one and a half miles. Perhaps the team on the Punter’s Panel at 1.30pm can guide you to farewell glory. If you are successful then you can bask in the glow of picking the last York winner until at least 2.12pm tomorrow.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A cosy winner on his handicap bow last month and with the prospect of more to come, Capla Lazarus doesn’t appear overburdened by a subsequent 4lb rise. The extra two furlongs he encounters here could unlock further improvement too. However, MASEKELA makes significant appeal from the foot of the handicap. A shade unfortunate at Thirsk on his penultimate start before being narrowly denied at Hamilton next time, success looks certain to come sooner rather than later. Others to note include Don Simon, Papagei and Kitsune Power.

SEVENTH RACE PRESENTATION & BEST TURNED OUT The trophy for this race will be presented to the winning owner after the race by the friends of Stuey Weston. Friends of Stuey Weston have generously given £100 to the racing groom responsible for the best turned out horse in this race.

GBB NOTICE The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly. And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

Epona: A Green Knavesmire 300 Sculpture Freddie McAlpine-Riddell is a wildlife sculptor, originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne. He creates figurative artwork to showcase the natural beauty of the thoroughbred in a very environmentally sustainable way; he uses discarded tools and machinery. In further tribute, the components used are not altered to fit specific shapes but maintaining their natural and true form. Freddie hopes to inspire others and encourage creative ways to re-purpose debris, in turn minimising and re-imagining waste and how we interact with it. You can see the largest of his creations, Epona, standing by the Stewards Head- On Box near the Parade Ring. Named after the Celtic goddess of horses, she is life-size, standing at a height of 18.1 hands.
