Welcome A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante day. Eighty years on since Dante won the Derby, thank you for joining us in Yorkshire, cradle of the thoroughbred. Since the last Dante Festival, we are all honoured and proud to have collected some awards for our 2024 season, notably the Juddmonte International being ranked at Longines World’s Best Horse Race and York being recognised as Overall Showcase Champions at the RCA Showcase Awards. A special congratulations to our hard-working Grounds Team who will collect their Award as GMA Professional Horse Racing Grounds Team of the Year after the second race today. Please see page [34].Thank you for your support last year, we are striving to keep improving your experience again this year. York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport, so attracting the best horses to the Knavesmire, for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival is more than £1.5m as part of the £12m across the season. This year, every race at York will be run for at least £25,000 – the highest of any racecourse in Britain so rewarding a wide set of connections. Let’s hope we see a similar quality of winners to last year when the winners of all four Group Two contests this week became Group One victors by Christmas. For the curious, from this equivalent day, Bluestocking took the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton and within the hour, Economics the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante; the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Irish Champion Stakes were to follow, respectively. Both Group 2 contests today are backed by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, so it is a special pleasure to welcome Malih Al Basti and his guests to the course to enjoy them with us. With prize money for the Dante at £180,000 it is the richest race of its type in Britain. After the success of Desert Crown in 2022, some eleven colts have already gone on from winning on the Knavesmire to claim the Epsom prize. This year marks eighty summers since Dante himself was the last to win the blue riband for the north, trained by Matt Peacock in Middleham. The current Derby betting market is dominated by Coolmore contenders – it will be interesting to see if The Lion In Winter joins that band today or whether a rival emerges to the Ballydoyle battalion! The Lion In Winter’s victory over Wimbledon Hawkeye in the Group Three Tattersalls Acomb at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival last August, with subsequent 2,000 Guineas winner Ruling Court in third, was the highest rated race of its type in 2024. The £150,000 Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes features eight of the best female thoroughbreds, including the interesting Supplementary Entry by Godolphin of Beautiful Love. Karmology, owned by David and Yvonne Blunt carries the hopes of Yorkshire, trained by Karl Burke, a yard in red hot form. This meeting tests the aspirations, so look carefully as the three-year-old sprinters lock horns in what is the Listed British EBF Westow Stakes. This prize money can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. A WINTER’S TALE: WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?
NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES CHAMPAGNE LAWNS
Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get a summer shower. For the October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air. Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table.
MR MOWITALL Joining the grounds team over winter were a couple of robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself.
THE TEAM NEVER REST Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 6,000 pints of paint have been used by the team this winter and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!). 8

The flowers are petunia and petchoa, grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.
THE BARS HAVE IT Over the Winter a number of bars have been given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Prosecco Bar next door. The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie.
NEW ON THE MENU Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering. If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes. Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza, freshly baked at the Moët Roof Terrace.

NEED A QUIET MOMENT? If you are looking to escape the bustle of a busy raceday please try one of our sunflower benches which are located in the quiet areas of each enclosure. We also have a quiet room located within the Houghton Building for use by racegoers. Our Chaplaincy Team are ready to assist racegoers of all faiths and none. If you need a friendly ear, please say hello to them. They can find a quiet spot for a chat.

A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse, it will operate whilst there are enough customers to make a bus viable, after the last race and after the concert. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.
TAXI/PRIVATE HIRE PICK-UP POINT There is a taxi pick up point at the Northern end of the racecourse adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at the Northern End. Pick up by UBER is from a dedicated area in Car Park A only.
WHERE CAN I PLACE A BET
The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta. The William Hill Betting Shops (Bustardthorpe End, Knavesmire Stand ground floor and front of Melrose Stand) offer a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.
BAR CLOSING TIMES Key bars will remain open up to 90 minutes after the last race. The serving of drinks in hospitality areas, will be as specified in your booking details. Have an enjoyable time with us but please respect our neighbours and the wider city as you leave the racecourse.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 11

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. RaceiQ Par Times A new statistics based predictor, it is the expected win time for a specific race based on the track, distance, going, race class and conditions. Based on the going at time of printing the day before racing at 16:00, being: GOOD TO FIRM, GOOD (IN PLACES) Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

ESSENTIAL RACING PHRASES FOR THE BEGINNER It could be easy to be put off by the weird and wonderful words and phrases banded around the racecourse, but in fact, its all part of the fun. Like a tourist in a foreign country, the novice racegoer soon picks up enough of the language to get by, and then rapidly becomes fluent.
The following terms will provide any newcomer, keen to enhance their language skills, with just enough of the jargon to sound like a ‘local’: RACING SPEAK

APPRENTICE:........................Young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while they are learning. BACKWARD: .........................Young horse which needs time to mature. CLERK OF THE COURSE:...Official in charge of running the racing programme, at York it is Anthea Leigh. CLERKS OF THE SCALES: .Key in the delivery of a successful racing operation, Wayne Burnell and Alex Porter are in charge of things today. A RACECOURSE FOR ALL We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme. The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there accessible and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. Can I bring my assistance dog? Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing? Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside
A TROPHY TO DISPLAY Arguably the most coveted piece of silverware in Flat racing, the Derby trophy was specially commissioned by Epsom Downs Racecourse as a perpetual memento for the owner of the winning horse. Containing the names of past winners dating back to the inaugural running of The Derby in 1780, including the eleven who also won the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes, the trophy was created by equine sculptor Charlie Langton and inspired by the unique undulations of Epsom Downs. Three silver horses are depicted galloping over a sweeping, circular base, Langton having drawn the idea from watching the horses descend through Tattenham Corner. The Betfred Derby is regarded in some quarters, as ‘the greatest Flat race in the world’ and is one of five British Classics, alongside the Betfred 1000 and 2000 Guineas, The Betfred Oaks and The Betfred St Leger. It is a race that has had an enormous impact on the Thoroughbred breed, with the bloodlines of many of the most successful racehorses in history established from its winners. The trophy is on display on the Edwardian Weighing Room Lawn.

In a nail biting finish, Inisherin just got the better of Flora Of Bermuda to take the first Group Two of the York season.
Despite a notable drift in the market before the off, Whirl came home in splendid isolation to win a second Tattersalls Musidora for Aidan O’Brien.
Night Raider broke well to take them along at a frantic pace, as is often the way in these sprints. The all-weather specialist took them along for much of the contest under a motionless Oisin Murphy and looked to be travelling the best as they entered the final furlong. The well-backed Inisherin didn’t look to make things easy for Ryan Moore and the Kevin Ryan trained four-year-old had to be rousted along to make a serious challenge. The challenge did eventually come however and inside the final half a furlong, with the pair came up alongside Night Raider, who didn’t find an awful lot at the business end and was forced to settle for third place. The Commonwealth Cup winner fought his way to the front but was quickly joined by the fast finishing Flora Of Bermuda under an all action ride by P J McDonald. The Kingsclere runner had been held up at the back of the pack but fairly flew home once asked the question to try and reel in the Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum owned colt. Flora Of Bermuda did head the eventual winner but Ryan Moore would not be denied and they battled back gamely to claim the prize in the shadows of the post.

Tattycoram was sent wide round the first turn by Hector Crouch to take up the running in the early stages in what looked an honest enough gallop. Go Go Boots sat in second on the rail under Kieran Shoemark, flanked by Whirl and Ryan Moore as they went round the home turn two abreast. The eye was drawn to the Ballydoyle filly as she travelled powerfully into the lead under a motionless Ryan Moore. Go Go Boots was rousted along at the furlong pole but was ultimately no match for the winner, eventually being reeled in by the fast finishing Serenity Prayer, who grabbed second for Andrew Balding under a good ride by Oisin Murphy. The daughter of Wootton Bassett coasted home to an easy five-anda-half length victory, giving Ryan Moore his second win in the contest. Following her victory, she was quoted 10/1 with our sponsors Sky Bet for the Betfred Oaks, although speaking after the race, Michael Tabor seemed to suggest a trip to France to the Prix de Diane could well be on the cards instead.

KNAVESMIRE TIP ROMIEU was quite taking on his UK debut when making all in a novice event at Redcar last month. An official rating of 90 looks workable for the Lope De Vega gelding and a third victory in four outings could be on the cards. NOT A FINAL TOTAL… SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRIES The Total Prize Fund is the total amount of money that the horses in a race are competing for and to be split between the winner and the placed horses. Unbeaten in three starts, Alpine Trail has won a Listed race at Newmarket since the original entries closed. Charlie Appleby and his team clearly hope there is more improvement as he continues his rapid ascent this season.
Alpine Trail The split of prize money between the podium horses and then between the owner, trainer, jockeys and stable is subject to a fairly complicated formula. However in outline the winning owner receives 441/2%, trainer 51/2%, jockey 4% and stable 21/2%. You can see further details of the split between horses on the page called “Race Conditions” near the back of this racecard.
Despite a three month lay off, Beautiful Love caught the eye of respected observers when finishing placed behind her stable mate in the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes earlier this month. Connections are hoping today she will see a further improvement. The breakdown of the new prize pots can be seen below.
The prize money on offer at the Dante Festival is set to attract the very best horses this week. It is funded from several sources; the racecourse itself, the sponsors, the levy board and the entry fees paid by the owners – sometimes referred to as the “Stake” hence the term “Stakes”. For the major races there are a series of entry dates whereby connections will decide to enter the race and then whether to stay in the race as the performance of the horse and plans for it unfold. For most Group races, the horses would usually be entered with quite a while to go before the raceday, for example the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes closed for original entries on April 1st. However, there is a late “supplementary entry” stage six days before the race. This is designed to allow a horse that may be a late developer or whose plans have changed to take their chance. The supplementary entry fee is set at a higher level than the normal entry route so it takes a bold move by the owners. If you think about it terms of playing poker, the connections of a late entrant have a better idea of their opposition so pay a premium. In a real example, to explain the numbers today, the total prize fund for The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes and Al Basti Equiworld, Middleton Fillies’ Stakes have risen because of one supplementary entry in each race, with Alpine Trail joining the Dante and Beautiful Love joining the Middleton, both are representing Godolphin.

DANTE 80 YEARS ON THE HOPE OF THE NORTH
Dante wins the Derby, June 1945
Foaled on March 7, 1942, he was by Nearco out of Rosy Legend and an inauspicious visit to the ring saw him fail to make his 3,500 gns reserve, and no buyer responded to a sale by public advertisement. So he was put into training with Matt Peacock by his owner, Sir Eric Ohlson. Dante enjoyed a blemish-free juvenile season, a winning debut at Stockton in April and five further successes including the Coventry Stakes and Middle Park Stakes. Come 1945, a successful pipe opener and he was aimed at the 2000 Guineas but preparations were interrupted when the horse’s left eye clouded over just before the first classic. Consequently sent to Newmarket short of gallop, Dante experienced his first defeat when Lord Astor’s Court Martial got the better of him by a neck. Some onlookers felt that had the challenge come on Dante’s right, he would have responded quicker. Legendary punter and founder of Timeform, Phil Bull, was not deterred and as the Middleham star drifted to 10/1, he went into the ring, backing Dante to win £14,000!

Due to WWII the 1945 Derby was run at Newmarket’s July Course. Dante was set to reoppose Court Martial. Meyrick Good, writing in the Sporting Life commented “I expect to see Dante, Midas, and Court Martial draw away from the field and for the winner I select Dante.” It was to prove an inspired summary as Dante became Middleham’s first Derby winner since Pretender won the 1869 renewal. Midas finished second, with Court Martial in third. His victory was celebrated in Middleham, where the church bells toiled, a Dante Ball held and winning jockey Nevett carried shoulder-high through the streets. Dante was then targeted for the St Leger, to be run here on the Knavesmire that September, he was rated an even-money favourite. However, rumours were that all was not well and they proved correct as on August 25 he was withdrawn. Chamossaire, won at York in his absence. The records show that the eye problems which had blighted the challenge for the 2000 Guineas had returned and indeed worsened. Dante was virtually blind in both eyes and so retired to stand at Theakston Stud, Bedale. Dante had a successful if comparatively brief stud career. Among his high-class winners were Darius (2000 Guineas and Eclipse Stakes), Carrozza (Oaks), and Discorea (Irish Oaks). This great horse died at Theakston in 1956. In all, Dante won eight of his nine starts. Dante remains the last Middleham, indeed last northern trained, horse to win the Derby. The success of Permian from Mark Johnston’s Stable in the town in the 2017 Dante offers encouragement that a new chapter in the sporting history of Middleham is being written. So Dante was reared in Yorkshire – lived there all his life – and retired to stud at Theakston Stud, Bedale.

INTRODUCTION The Group Two Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes has a rich tradition of attracting the very best older middle-distance fillies and mares from across Europe. Last year’s winner Bluestocking took the roll of honour to new heights after her win in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe BETTING It is safe to say that this isn’t a race in which taking a chance on an outsider has proved successful. In the last ten years, there have been four winning favourites and only one horse has won the race at a double figure price. TRAINERS Since the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton was first run in 1981, its prestige has increased from Listed status to Group 2 and therefore it may be unfair to group past winners into the same category. After the retirement of Sir Michael Stoute, we instead look to John Gosden and Thady Gosden, who have an excellent record in recent years, saddling three winners in the last six years.

RECENT FORM It is worth nothing that 5/12 winners had at least one run previously this season but only one of those five had previous wins that season. So although it is a marginal benefit to have had a run this season, there is no suggestion that a win improves a horses chances. OFFICIAL RATING Again, it isn’t entirely straightforward when it comes to the official ratings of the past winners because as the race has grown in stature so has the calibre of its runners. Last year’s winner was rated 113 and it pays to follow those at the top of the ratings, see See The Fire as the highest rated at 113. CONCLUSION Top rated See The Fire looks as though she is the one the all have to beat after her fifth placed effort at Sandown Park behind Al Aasy. Favourites do have a good record in the contest and she deserves her place at the head of the betting. Nakheel drops back in trip after signing of last season with a Group Two win at Doncaster over one mile, six furlongs. Her lack of a run this year would be a negative but she’s certainly stay the trip. The pick this year is the supplemented BEAUTIFUL LOVE for Charlie Appleby and William Buick. RACE DESCRIPTION The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes over one mile two furlongs is towards the pinnacle of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, it forms part of the second of four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. Given its Pattern prestige, it is part of a broader strategy to keep such horses racing rather than connections choosing to retire them for breeding. KNAVESMIRE TIP Although she could only muster a fifth-placed finish in the Gordon Richards at Sandown last month, there is every chance that SEE THE FIRE could improve for that seasonal debut. Andrew Balding’s filly posted several creditable efforts in defeat at the top level last year and a return to the scene of her last success could prove fruitful. Nakheel ended her 2024 campaign on an upward trajectory and, despite this trip looking on the sharp side, the Park Hill hero shouldn’t be underestimated. Doha should also have better days ahead.

80 YEARS ON... STAR WINNERS REMEMBERED
This year it will some eighty summers since Matt Peacock sent Dante down from his Middleham yard to win the Derby. As a contest in his honour, the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes has been a feature of this meeting since 1958. Already eleven colts have done the Knavesmire/Epsom double with plenty of other smart types taking Irish Derbys and other major prizes. Perhaps appropriately the first winner was Bald Eagle, trained locally by Harry Carr and ridden by Cecil Boyd-Rochford, all of them had one thing in common- they won before they were famous. Here are a few which stand out:
RHEINGOLD (1972) Until then the name had been associated with the loud and lengthy Wagernian masterpiece, but the horse which Barry Hills referred to a ‘probably the best I trained’ in his long and distinguished career, began to show his class when winning the Dante under Ernie Johnson, and then went on to finish a short head behind Roberto in one of the great Derby finishes at Epsom. He was also fourth back on the Knavesmire in the inaugural running of the race that is now ranked as the World’s Best Race, the Juddmonte International, in which Roberto beat Brigadier Gerard. Even better was to come the following year as Lester Piggott rode him to victory in the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, beating the golden French mare Allez France.
SHARASTANI (1986) The first of the recently retired Sir Michael Stoute’s 7 race winners, he was owned and bred by the Aga Khan. Then it was on to Epsom and a Derby victory overshadowed by the memory of the second horse Dancing Brave who, despite making ground from the back down the home straight failed to catch him. He went on to complete the double, as after Epsom he went to The Curragh and turned the Irish Derby into a procession. 52
CARLTON HOUSE (2011) For little over three weeks the Dante Stakes had left The Nation with its fingers crossed- was it possible that after more than half a century of incredible support , the Royal Colours of the late Queen Elizabeth II might just finally be seen on an Epsom winner? Although Aidan O’Brien had Seville on the race, Ryan Moore was cleared to ride Carlton House who sent the Knavesmire crowd into dreamland when winning impressively from the Ballydoyle runner, Seville. Carlton House was to finish a close third to the French raider Pour Moi on the Downs but the post-race Dante atmosphere was like few others.
GOLDEN HORN (2015) With the benefit of hindsight, there’s a strong case for suggesting that the 2015 was the best renewal this century. John Gosden was happy for his two star three-year-old colts to take each other on- and they were to go on and sweep almost all before them throughout a golden summer for the Trainer. Golden Horn could hardly have been more impressive, beating Jack Hobbs by almost three lengths with Elm Park, a proven Group 1 performer a similar distance back in third. Weeks later was deja vue as the Gosden pair were first and second in the Derby and while Jack Hobbs went on to win the Irish Derby, Golden Horn added the Coral Eclipse, the Irish Champion Stakes and the Arc to his equine CV by early October. The Dante may well be best watched with a crystal ball about the future….but you won’t get long odds about whatever wins going on to great things- there’s decades of evidence to support that.

Rheingold was beaten just inches by Roberto in 1972 and the Millennium winner Sakhee was only 150 yards from Derby victory before being headed late on by Sinndar. The 2008 renewal saw Tartan Bearer go down by just half a length to New Approach and Libertarian was fast finishing for his runners up berth.

The late Sir Henry Cecil holds the record for having won this race seven times – Approval (1970), Lyphard’s Wish (1979), Hello Gorgeous (1980), Simply Great (1982), Claude Monet (1984), Reference Point (1987) and Tenby (1993). Sir Michael Stoute signed off his training career with five wins, so instead it falls to the Gosden yard based at Clarehaven who could move up the leaderboard should one of Nightwalker, Damysus or Devil’s Advocate oblige to give the yard a fifth win.

How do local trainers fare? Poorly, until the turn of this decade. However, Libertarian broke the County’s duck for trainer Elaine Burke in 2013. The Grey Gatsby made it two in a row for the White Rose courtesy of Hambleton based Kevin Ryan in 2014. It was back to winning ways in 2017, when the Mark Johnston trained Permian prevailed and Thunderous gave the yard a third success in 2020. The White Rose isn’t represented today.

INTRODUCTION Arguably the leading trial for next month’s Betfred Derby is this afternoon’s Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes and it is usually won by a very smart middle-distance performer. The roll of honour includes North Light (2004), Motivator (2005), Authorized (2007), Golden Horn (2015) & Desert Crown (2022) who have all followed up at Epsom having won here. Roaring Lion went onto win four Group 1’s and 2021 champion Hurricane Lane won the St Leger, so it’s a good guide for the season! BETTING It looks as though there may be a bit of a resurgence of those toward the front of the betting. Hurricane Lane obliged at 5/1 while Desert Crown was sent off 7/2JF. Previously those at a slightly bigger price had been the way to go, Libertarian caused a major shock when landing the spoils at 33/1 back in 2013 but he is one of only two winners since then years to have gone off bigger than 10/1 and won. TRAINERS Of the trainers with runners this afternoon, John Gosden has the best record having saddled four winners, his most recent victory coming in 2018 with Roaring Lion. However, the O’Brien yard also has a strong record with four winners, so be sure to keep an eye on Nightwalker, Damysus, Devil’s Advocate and The Lion In Winter, respectively.

JUVENILE FORM Only a handful of the previous winners had Pattern form as a two-year-old so perhaps proven form at this level is not as important as it once was. However, despite Telecaster winning this race in 2019, he was only the third winner in the last decade who did not run as a two-year-old, which suggests that the later maturing types tend to struggle in this contest. RECENT FORM Contesting a Group race as a prep run for this race often pays dividends – a pattern worth bearing in mind when going through this year’s field. It also seems best to side with those arriving in form, with those who had finished in the top three and ran to form last time out favoured by the trends. CONCLUSION Like the Middleton, Clarehaven have a strong record in this race and look to have a solid hand with three hopefuls. Of the three, DAMYSUS could well have the most improvement and is the pick here against some of those shorter in the betting. While a general double figure price, there would be no surprise to see him shorten after an eyecatching run in the Sandown Park Classic trial. The Lion In Winter is the obvious one for this but his lack of prep run would be a minor concern, although Aidan O’Brien does have a good record here. KNAVESMIRE TIP THE LION IN WINTER unfortunately missed his initial intended assignment in the first Classic this year, but there is no doubting the level of ability the son of Sea The Stars showed in his juvenile campaign. Aidan O’Brien’s colt produced a sparkling performance to beat Wimbledon Hawkeye (second) and subsequent 2000 Guineas winner Ruling Court (third) in the Acomb here last summer. He is likely to have lots more to offer, especially with this step up in distance expected to bring about any amount of improvement. Alpine Trail is unbeaten in three starts, with his best effort coming when successful in Listed company at Newmarket just under a fortnight ago, and he is one to watch.

RACE DESCRIPTION This Listed race aims to give a competitive run to high quality 3yo sprinters who may struggle against their elders this early in the season in Pattern races yet are already beyond most handicaps. In recognition of the latter development of fillies, the two in this race get a lighter weight, see Miss Lamai. However, any runner that has already succeeded at this or a yet higher level has to carry an additional 3lb per such victory which explains the top weight for Aesterius. A European Breeders’ Fund race, meaning that all the horse’s sires are registered in Europe with the EBF. The scheme is to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Jan Steen and WISE APPROACH both made winning debuts and the experience will count for a lot. The former impressed with a romp in a Thirsk maiden and is a bright prospect for Karl Burke’s yard. However, it was a deeper contest Wise Approach won at Ascot and with a return there possible for something like the Coventry at the Royal meeting, this provides an ideal stepping stone for Godolphin’s 1,000,000gns son of Mehmas. An A-Z of information for racegoers Abandoned Racing
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on badges and tickets purchased will only be paid in the following circumstances. a) before the first race - 100% refund. b) before the completion of three races - 50% refund. c) therafter - no refund applies. Refunds cannot be made on racedays. To obtain a refund, racegoers who purchased their admission on the day should send the ticket they were given on entrance with their full name and address to: York Racecourse, York, YO23 1EX within 30 days. Racegoers who booked in advance direct with the track and so paid by card will receive an automatic refund. A similar process will apply for those who paid in advance by cheque. Alcohol And Public Order
The Racecourse takes its responsibilities under Licensing Laws very seriously and puts in place training and measures to exceed these obligations. Racegoers are urged to drink responsibly. Alcohol cannot be brought into the stands side enclosures. York Racecourse reserves the right to expel any person found to be drunk or behaving in a disorderly manner. The “Challenge 25” initiative will be in operation to ensure that only those aged 18 and over are served with alcohol. Thank you for your support of this obligation.
Cameras
Please feel free to take a souvenir photo of your day. However we would remind you that the preparation and performance of the sport must be ensured, so please note:1. Kindly refrain from flash photography. 2. Avoid taking photos in restricted areas used by the sporting professionals i.e. Saddling Boxes, Stables, Unsaddling Boxes & Weighing Room. 3. Respect the privacy of others.
Cigarettes and e-cigarettes
The current smoking legislation regarding smoking in public places applies at the racecourse. The use of e-cigarettes is permitted, however they will be treated the same as tobacco products.
Common Courtesy/Entry Conditions
All persons visiting York Racecourse are admitted subject to Racecourse Regulations and the Rules of Racing. The Racecourse reserves the right to refuse admission or remove from the racecourse any person refusing to comply with the Rules and Regulations or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others. Dogs
Racegoers are requested to leave their pets including all dogs at home. Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome.
First Aid
There are first aid posts in the Edwardian Weighing Room, other such buildings have been designated as isolation rooms, should they be required.
Dress Standards
Most racegoers like to make racing at York a special occasion and choose to dress accordingly. Gentlemen (and those identifying as such) in the County Stand are required to wear a jacket, collared shirt and tie. It has always been the case that shorts and t-shirts have been welcome in Grandstand and Paddock. All racegoers are reminded that the removal of shirts is not encouraged and that basic decency and not causing offence to fellow racegoers by clothing choices, is required. York Racecourse reserves the right to refuse or, to require anyone to leave who does not observe the above code.
Drugs
A zero tolerance policy on drug abuse is in force, be warned, North Yorkshire Police and our own team are watching with some canine help, sniffing.
Litter
Racegoers are requested to place all litter in the receptacles provided. If you do not need your racecard please place it in a bin as you leave the racecourse.
Noise
So that the horses have the best chance to perform and so your fellow racegoers have the opportunity to enjoy them please do not cause any distractions; the waving of flags or banners, use of radios or making of sudden noises are examples of things to avoid. Racegoers are reminded of Public Health England advice that shouting increases the risk of the spread of diseases, so to consider wearing your face covering when part of a cheering crowd.
Parade Ring
For safety reasons children under the age of twelve are not permitted into the Parade Ring or Unsaddling Enclosure.
Photo Finishes And Stewards’ Enquiries/Objections
In any race where Photo Finish has been called by the Judge, this information will be displayed on the Giant Screen. An announcement will also be broadcast. Race Results and Photographs will also be displayed on the York Racecourse television monitors.
Radios and Mobile Telephones
The use of all types of communication equipment is strictly controlled at all racecourses. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc., for any purpose at the racecourse.
Track Safety
For your own safety and the welfare of the horses, jockeys and stable staff please keep off the track. Anyone trespassing on the track: Will be liable to arrest and prosecution Will be ejected immediately Will be banned from all future York race meetings May face a nationwide racecourse ban
