A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the first Saturday of our 2026 season, I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day of both equine stars and sharp suited performers!
Whilst some York contests started back in the 1840’s, today marks only the eighth staging of the Group 3 William Hill Brontë Cup, complete with a prize fund of £100,000. That makes it one of now forty-four contests in our season to offer a six-figure purse Aimed at fillies and mares over a mile and three quarters, it is part of a wider plan to encourage the best female stayers to remain in training in Britain beyond their three-year-old careers. One example would be Danielle, who has run at the likes of Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood for leading trainers, the Gosdens. If you need help finding the winner, then try the “SmartView” version of the form on page 44, by kind courtesy of the Racing Post
The feature handicap is a valuable sprint over five furlongs, again generously supported by William Hill. It boasts a packed field of speedsters, including some familiar names to racing fans, for example Fortification who won here just eight days ago. They will hurtle down the 1,000 metres in under a minute. See page 30 for our ‘how to solve’ guide to selecting a winner in this race
There are few horses better known to the York crowd than Dakota Gold. Trained by Michael Dods, the opening race today will be the 19th time he has flown down the Knavesmire straight, having won six times plus being placed second on three further occasions, so netting in excess of £180,000 of York prize money.
Our fifth race today remembers Reg Bond, a tremendous supporter of York Racecourse and Yorkshire racing as well as being a shining light for the joy of being an owner-breeder; Record Day carries his well-known silks in today’s renewal.
We proudly welcome the friends and families of The Royal Yorkshire Regiment supporting our sixth race of the day. I hope they all have a memorable raceday and we are all hugely proud of our County Regiment.
The team have been busy preparing for your return: it is the first Saturday for the new podium, and you can enjoy the Churchill Tyres Lawn, Theakston or Guinness Bars to wash down some fresh, local Fish‘n’Chips.
If you want to follow events from Wembley, then Hull City v Middlesborough will be shown live and uninterrupted on the big screen above the Roberto Lawn with kick off at 3:30pm.
The high-quality sport can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. Many thanks to William Hill, the Bond Family, Tomahawk and the European Breeders’ Fund for their valuable backing.
Hopefully the forecasters were correct meaning the sun is set to SHINE today - do enjoy the performance of Re-Take That from the stage between the Knavesmire and Bustardthorpe Stands after racing. The sound system is local to the stage so for the best audio experience, do dance on down to the front of it. If you are in the Clocktower Enclosure you are welcome to come across after the last.
I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day.
William Derby, Chief Executive

Manchester City are rejoicing at having won the F.A. Cup. Which four current horseracing tracks share their name with football teams that have lifted the famous trophy? (Tip: you need the shared name not just a shared city. So Aintree does not count!)

With thanks to race sponsors, Design Tonic from Leeds, the fourth floor has a bright new look with new carpets, suspended ceilings, improved lighting, bespoke joinery and huge TVS! To find out more hospitality@yorkracecourse.co.uk

It now matches the Champagne Lawns, more importantly it offers more space for large groups of successful Owners. Check out the digital screen in the Douglas Fir backboard. With thanks to Lindum York & The Football Company.

As part of Green Knavesmire 300 we planted two miles of hedge around the eastern boundary including the six & seven furlong starts to improve landscaping and support wildlife. As they grow the blend of hawthorn, hornbeam, hazel, prunus and field maple plants will become more obvious.

The Yorkshire brass & jazz bands can now stay dry, courtesy of this smart base delivered by Duncombe Sawmill from Helmsley.

Across the racecourse, York based company Communicate Technology helped us replace 40 Access Points (think the shower heads that dispense the coverage) and added plenty of new ones. Often moving just twenty yards will improve your signal.

On the first floor of the Ebor Stand, a convenient way to get a pint, perhaps on the way to the Ebor Lawn. The brands it serves will vary by day, expect to see Birra Moretti, Dark Fruits Cider and Guinness over the year

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Welcome to the first Saturday of the York season. We start with a handicap. Such races are designed for close competition with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance, seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best on past form will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight, Mae Amor will hope you find love today. As you didn’t ask, their stall numbers are allocated at random by the computer!

This is wide open and only a tentative vote can go to AN OUTLAW’S GRACE. The son of Dandy Man is without a win since his debut at Salisbury, but he returned to form with an encouraging second at Windsor recently and looks to hold solid claims from an unchanged mark. Orne remains of interest following a creditable third over 7f here last week, while 66/1 Hamilton winner Mae Amor renewals her rivalry with runner-up Jonny Concrete. Papa Cocktail arrives following a brace of seconds and could also be in the mix.

This afternoon’s William Hill Epic Boost Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for novice racegoers with twenty-one closely matched runners set to go to post. Is it best to plump for a lucky number, an interesting name or a set of jockey silks you like the look of? Whilst all of these strategies may throw up the odd winner, a safer and more prudent approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology.
Narrowing down the field of 21 declared runners is easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps.
Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career in the 140s. The ranking operates the opposite way around from a golf handicap, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or down for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horse’s most recent form.
Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Air Force One, rated 90, is considered 1lb “better” than We Never Stop who is rated 89. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight, theoretically at least, Air Force One should win every time. Races which were too predictable wouldn’t make good viewing and therefore the handicap is designed to set a level playing field. So in this example Air Force One carries 1lb more than We Never Stop, which should in theory see them cross the line together and that rule applies to all of the 21 runners – but, despite dead heats being a possibility, you won’t ever see all 21 runners cross the line together so how do we separate them in advance?
Horses which won or ran well last time will attract the interest of the handicapper and a rise of 6 or 7lb can often follow. Sometimes this can prove a step too far as horses then struggle to concede weight to lower rated rivals. Eventually as the horse continues to run without winning their rating will come back down to a winnable mark and the whole cycle begins again. The art is working out which category your horse falls into.
Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!
Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form but it is also important that they look like they still have a bit of improvement left. There are a few runners today who come here without the best of recent records; Francisco’s Piece, Elegant Erin and Squealer are all looking to end a poor run of form. Alternatively, the likes of Fortification and Vantheman arrive on the back of last-time-out victories, so could be in fine fettle.
Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint and is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. Some punters swear that being drawn close to a rail is an advantage as it keeps a horse focused on running straight. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn low-to-middle have often held the upper hand over sprint trips.; the theory is that from there a jockey has the ability to track rivals on both sides.
3) DISTANCE
Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip, especially over this fast and furious five furlongs, can be invaluable. Fortification, Air Force One, Vintage Clarets and Squealer have all won over today’s distance here at York.
4) GROUND
If you thought the debates over draw were intense then try talking about the impact of ground to a racing anorak. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surface, just like some human athletes might prefer cross country to the track. Squealer and Toca Modera are runners who will enjoy a quicker surface. Alternatively, all of Francisco’s Piece’s best form has come on a surface that is a little softer. So, make sure to check the weather and the ground description.
5) YORK RECORD
“Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, just like football teams have a lucky ground. This year we have four horses that have won over the course and distance, as noted above, whilst Pilgrim has also won at the track but over slightly further.
6) CONCLUSION
Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. The Brian Ellison-trained Fortification was impressive when winning here last time and a 5lb rise in the weights may not be enough to halt his progress. King Of Light remains in good form for Stuart Williams and looks to have a favorable draw so can also run well, whilst at a bigger price course-and-distance Squealer benefits from a sliding mark and appeals as well-handicapped.

This one is limited to the babies of the game, aged just two; they don’t have much if any track experience hence the term “novice” All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.
Now the fun bit, to add a layer of competition (or for some complexity) a runner’s weight can be lowered (an allowance) based on having been bought comparatively cheaply at a recognised auction, so the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and hence potential. The most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. All the boys in the highest band, A, start from a 9st 7lb weight, that explains the burden carried by the likes of Cuban Heels. Any horse from a lower Band racing in opposition to one from a higher Band, benefits from an allowance, so Mussab carries a 2lb lower weight because “better” horses such as Cuban Heels race against him. So on, down the bands, which is why Ponte Carlo (Band D) has less weight again. That’s the male runners explained; any fillies also get a benefit to give them a fair chance given their different physical development at this age so the sole filly Lake Muritz, starts from a lighter weight than her male equivalents. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter All a bit much? Then go for the alternative “P” for “pin” rather than “pedigree”.

We return to handicap conditions, remember the best on past performance will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight than the lowest rated horse; Pilgrim is at the top of the weights on this occasion. Five furlongs is the shortest distance in UK racing so don’t blink as they flash home
So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C denoting has won at York such or D meaning won over this distance. Notice how Squealer is one to carry both consonants after his name If you’re into this, then note he has the consonants without any gap between them as he won here over this trip, unlike Pilgrim who has won at York but over six furlongs hence his “C” with his “D” being earned at Ascot.

A relatively recent addition to the Pattern schedule at York, think of these top-quality races in football divisions starting from Group 1. This Group 3 contest is a valuable prize (£100,000), as well as offering the prestige of “black type” in their pedigree That desire for competition limits the race to horses of the same sex, being all females. The intention is to tempt connections into a longer career on the track for such thoroughbreds before a second life as a broodmare. That all adds up to a level weights affair.
See what the Press think on their selections board by the Winner’s Enclosure, at least you can then blame them.

“We are The Royal Yorkshire Regiment: brave, decisive, and county-proud. With over 330 years of history behind us, we are driven by a relentless will to succeed— harnessing battlewinning innovation for the Army of tomorrow and providing a highly deployable force to train and fight alongside our allies across the world today.”
What a pleasure and privilege it is for the regiment to once again be part of another exciting day of racing at York Racecourse.
COUNTY-PROUD. COMBAT READY.

The British Army is modernising at pace, adapting to the demands of an increasingly complex and unpredictable world. The Royal Yorkshire Regiment stands at the forefront of this transformation, reflecting the diversity of operations, change and readiness that define today’s Army.
Since our formation in 2006, we have deployed on twenty operational tours, serving with distinction in Iraq, Afghanistan, Estonia, and the Balkans. Wherever we go, we serve the Nation and deliver operational excellence.
The past year has seen Yorkshire soldiers busy both at home and abroad. Our Regular and Reserve soldiers have deployed to countries across the globe including Kenya, Poland and the USA, as well as helping train Ukrainian troops. They’ve even found the time to excel in sport, with notable success in Rugby, Football, Cycling, Boxing, Skiing and Hyrox.
Your Royal County Regiment is thriving; operationally focused, modern in outlook, and proud of our county roots. We will continue to strengthen our bonds with Yorkshire by collaborating with local businesses and organisations, and deepening our ties across the community.
With a strong presence across our county’s cities and towns, the Battalions and the Band of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment are actively recruiting now.
I wish you all an enjoyable and successful day at York Racecourse.

We finish the day with a race that bookmakers will love, a full field in a handicap, this time for horses rated between 61 and 80, back over that rather specialist seven-furlong distance.
The biggest burden goes to Leadman. Connections can take some weight off the partnership by selecting an apprentice jockey, effectively trading a lower weight for less experience in the saddle. Notice how Karl Burke has gone this route in trusting Jack Nicholls to ride Inspired. Hopefully the sun will continue to SHINE for this evening’s concert, maybe time to deploy your favourite colours.

Longest Traveller: PULSAR STAR trained by T Faulkner, Devauden, 214 miles.
Rascal Recknell ended last season in top form with two wins and a second from four starts after joining Mick Appleby, but he has been put up another 2lb and may have to settle for a place here. BEALE STREET was value for more than the official margin of a neck, after getting a clear run at the last moment at Newcastle, and he gets to race off 6lb lower back on turf which gives him every chance. The consistent Pulsar Star gets the nod for the minor placing.

RACE PRESENTATION & BEST TURNED OUT

The trophy for this race will be presented to the winning owner after the race by a representative of William Hill.
William Hill have generously given £100 to the racing groom responsible for the best turned out horse in this race

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. We are now registered with the Access Card (nimbus) scheme which helps with advance booking.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.
