A very warm welcome to York for what looks set to be a great day of sporting action in support of a wonderful charity. We are delighted to be hosting Britain’s biggest charity raceday and Macmillan’s biggest single fundraiser, for the 55th time.
Over £11m has now been raised over the previous 54 racedays due to the tremendous support of racegoers, sponsors, charity riders, volunteers, supporters and the hard work and generosity of so many people, past and present. We thank you all; everyone can take a huge pride in helping people whose lives are affected by cancer We send our utmost appreciation and thanks to all at Macmillan Cancer Support who dedicate themselves to helping patients and their families cope with this terrible disease
So much is done by so many, however the jockeys in the Ernest Cooper Macmillan Ride of Their Lives do merit a special mention – please read their stories on pages 24-25. Their commitment to fitness, horsemanship and fundraising has been truly impressive. They have already banked over £100,000, and you can add to it by visiting our website and following a link to their JustGiving pages, or scanning the QR code under the charity race
The Churchill Tyres Supporting Macmillan Sprint is the latest example of a business to back this great day. One of Britain’s richest sprint handicaps for three-year-olds, it offers record prize money of £125,000 The roll of honour in this race over six furlongs includes top sprinters such as Cadeaux Genereux, Sheikh Albadou and Twilight Son. Always a fascinating contest, it pits Group One winning riders like James Doyle, Clifford Lee and William Buick against upcoming apprentices such as Jack Nicholls, Lauren Young or Alex Jary - each hoping their mounts can outpace 21 declared rivals. It may be that some of today’s field return for our flagship sprint contest, the Group One Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe on Friday 21st August.
With prize money of £70,000 on offer, the black type contest of the afternoon is the Listed Sky Bet Race to the Ebor Grand Cup; which has drawn a quality field of Group class stayers. The winner earns a guaranteed berth in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 22 August, see p44 to find out how. The prestige and the promise of the race has drawn defending champion Al Qareem from the Yorkshire yard of Karl Burke to face Gregory, who has won at Royal Ascot, as well as a previous Sky Bet Melrose winner over course and distance, Tabletalk - the latter pair from Newmarket.
The Queen Mother ’s Cup is the UK’s richest contest for Female Amateur Jockeys. Once again it is backed by the Basil Samuel Charitable Trust with our particular thanks to Richard Peskin, Trustee. The jockeys themselves do not take any monetary reward so instead they receive their weight in fabulous Lanson champagne; do watch out for this special weighing-in ceremony in the winner ’s enclosure.
The continuing support of the Basil Samuel Charitable Trust, the Ice Co, Fordy Marshall, Tomahawk, Ernest Cooper as well as that of Churchill Tyres and Sky Bet is hugely appreciated.
There is still time to bid for one of the fantastic lots in the Macmillan auction - you can see some of the lots on the ground floor of the Ebor Stand, or to buy a raffle ticket (for information on both, see p23). Do raise a cheer for both our intrepid riders who can relax by 12.35pm, as well as for our brave fundraisers who are abseiling from the roof of the Knavesmire Stand.
If this is your first visit in 2026, the team have been busy preparing for your return, listen to Doctor Jazz perform from their new bandstand and watch connections collect their trophies from the new podium. Do enjoy the Monotones on the Churchill Tyres Lawn. For a different perspective and some delicious cakes, pop over to the Knavesmire Coffee Shop, or try the cheese toasties cooked fresh on the John Carr Terrace.
I hope that you are able to come racing at York again soon, perhaps to see Becky Hill after racing on Saturday 27 June or Craig David (24/7) or Tom Grennan (25/7) over Music Showcase Weekend.
Thank you for your support of York Racecourse and Macmillan Cancer Support and I hope you have a successful and enjoyable day.
William

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WE LC OM E
This year marks the 55th anniversary of the Macmillan Charity Raceday at York Racecourse. It is a remarkable milestone for an event that has brought people together from across Yorkshire and beyond for more than five decades.
It is an honour to be part of a day that means so much to this community Over the years, the Raceday has raised more than £11 million to help ensure that everyone living with cancer can access care that is right for them. That impact is extraordinary, and it reflects the generosity, spirit and commitment of people across Yorkshire.
None of this would be possible without our longstanding partnership with York Racecourse and the dedication of the Racecourse Committee. Their support, and the support of so many local individuals and organisations, has helped make this event such a proud fixture in Yorkshire’s calendar.
Yet the need for support continues to grow More people across Yorkshire are living with cancer than ever
before. While we are working hard to reach those who need us today, we are also focused on transforming cancer care for the future, shaped around people and communities. We cannot do that alone. Cancer will never be fair, but together we can make cancer care fair.
Whether you have supported us for many years or are joining us for the first time this weekend, thank you. Your support is helping us reach more people across Yorkshire, strengthening the partnerships that matter most and ensuring more people facing cancer get the support they need, close to home
Gemma Peters Chief Executive Macmillan Cancer Support
Welcome to the 55th Macmillan Charity Raceday at York Racecourse This annual charity weekend is Macmillan’s single biggest fundraising event in the country, with £11 million raised to date, and we’re aiming even higher this year.

Jockey: Kate Atkinson
Form: 20336-0
Breeder: Mr M. Dunphy & Mr E. Cantillon
Signing up to take part in this charity race 7 months ago was a crazy idea! I never knew how difficult it would be to get to this day, but it has been so rewarding turning my hand from my usual endurance riding to learning to get by on a racehorse, and all for Macmillan. A charity that I have seen work with two family members and a close friend and they have always made a massive difference. The support and care they provide is essential. So, thank you to everybody that has supported me on this journey and donated to Macmillan.

Form: 000-050
Breeder: Juddmonte Farms (East) Limited
After 4.5 years away from racing, I am honoured to return to the saddle for such an incredible cause. As an Assistant Restaurant Manager and mum to a 20-month-old son, this challenge is about more than racing—it is about proving that with determination, courage, and belief, nothing is impossible I hope my journey inspires other mums to take the leap, rediscover themselves, and chase goals they may have thought were out of reach. I ride in honour of my mother-in-law, Chris, a breast cancer survivor whose strength continues to inspire me, and for everyone whose lives have been touched by cancer. My heartfelt thanks go to Victoria for introducing me to this incredible opportunity, and to my wonderful friend Catherine, whose encouragement and support have made this fundraising journey possible.

Owner: Martin Webb Racing
Trainer: Nigel Tinkler
6 11-7
Jockey: Lyn Comerford
Form: 554060-
Breeder: Queen Elizabeth II
I am riding in memory of my father, Michael Comerford, who introduced me to horse racing when he was an independent bookmaker. With the race falling on the first anniversary of his passing, it feels like a fitting way to celebrate his life while raising funds for Macmillan. It is also especially meaningful to ride at York. The course means a great deal to Nigel, Kim and the Tinkler Racing team, who have supported me over the last few years to do something I never thought possible going from zero riding experience to the racecourse!
4 TROPEZ POWER (IRE)

Owner: Elizabeth Couglin & Carol Milburn
Trainer: Mark Walford
6 11-7
Jockey: Scarlet Coughlin
Form: 0456-60
Breeder: M. McGlynn
Today, I’m riding in memory of my wonderful daredevil Granny, Lilian Ray, who we lost to cancer five years ago, and I know she’ll be with me in spirit. After 10 years working in racing, getting the chance to finally ride in a race is incredibly special, especially at such a fantastic course. To do so on a horse I’ve ridden, cared for and taken racing for several years makes it even more special. Having all my family here to share the moment means the world to me, and I just hope Tropez looks after me as well as I’ve looked after him!

Taking part in this race means so much more than just the thrill of it. Training hard and pushing out of my comfort zone, meeting so many great people along the way, and fundraising for such an amazing charity that helps numerous people when they need it the most. All the amazing support from family, friends, and everyone around me has definitely pushed my motivation to a new level. It has been a huge challenge for me, but it has certainly been the most memorable experience of my life.

Owner: The Musley Bank Partnership & Partner

Jockey: Danny Hague
Trainer: Richard & Peter Fahey Form: 030236
Breeder: Lynn Lodge Stud
For the past 11 years, I have worked for the Injured Jockeys Fund as Head of Sport Science and Strength & Conditioning, supporting professional jockeys and gaining a deep appreciation of the skill, dedication, and resilience required in race riding. Inspired by the athletes I work with every day, I am excited to experience the challenge and thrill of race riding myself. I am also taking part to support Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity close to my heart. After my dad’s throat cancer diagnosis in 2018, Macmillan’s nurses provided outstanding care and support to our entire family, making a lasting difference during a difficult time.

Owner: Half Moon Racing
Trainer: Michael & David Easterby
4 11-7
Jockey: Becky Mason
Form: 2044-63
Breeder: Ladyswood Stud & Ed Frost
Taking part in this race is inspired by a connection to racing through my family As part of the well-known Easterby racing family, I have grown up around horses and competed from a young age. After completing an Ironman last year, I was looking for a new challenge that would also support a fantastic cause. Working in healthcare as a physio, I see the impact of cancer and the valuable support provided by Macmillan Cancer Support firsthand. Balancing training, work, and fundraising has been demanding, but with strong support from family and friends, I’m excited to take on this unique and rewarding experience.

Owner: Max Comley & Louis Gill
Trainer: Max Comley

Training for this race has been particularly challenging as I am also studying for my A-levels, balancing revision, coursework, and exams alongside riding and fitness training. Despite the demands on my time, I feel strongly that supporting those affected by cancer is worthwhile. Macmillan provides invaluable care, advice, and support to people facing cancer, and I am proud to contribute to such an important cause which has affecting many of our family and friends.

I’m racing in the Macmillan Ride of Their Lives, because the challenge of galloping around the Knavesmire was too thrilling to resist. And because helping Macmillan to support those affected by cancer is very personal to me. My mother has been treated for cancer twice, I have recently lost friends to cancer and loved ones are currently receiving treatment. It is an honour to ride at the magnificent York racecourse, and I’m grateful to everyone who has sponsored me. Huge thanks to Jamie Osborne and all the team in Lambourn for the support, help and early morning humour along the way. See you at the final furlong.

I’m riding this race to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support so that they can carry on doing the marvellous work they already do in helping people affected by cancer and their families receive the care they deserve. Also, I am doing something that not many people will ever get the chance to do and that is to ride a racehorse on the Knavesmire in front of thousands of spectators.

ARQOOB wasn’t beaten far into fifth on his seasonal debut at Newmarket last month and with the subsequent victory of the fourth giving that form some substance, Lucy Wadham’s charge could launch a strong challenge Secret Force finished a solid fourth back on the level at Hamilton last time, while Dunkeld Dreamer may improve for this extra test of stamina. The latter pair are preferred to Chillingham, who was awarded last year’s renewal by the stewards.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 76-95
Prize Money: £30,000

We continue with handicap conditions. Such races are designed for close competition, so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best on past performances will be the highest rated horse, being Yanifer here and so will carry most weight.
So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, look how Mirabeau is one that carries both consonants.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Unbeaten in novice company, EXTREMELY ZAIN could prove better than his opening mark. William Haggas’ charge beat a subsequent winner when successful at Newbury on his seasonal bow and an entry in next month’s Sussex Stakes strongly suggests he’s held in high regard. Aalto was set a stiff task in the Victoria Cup on his reappearance but could fare better here under Ryan Moore, while Mirabeau and Recency Bias are others worthy of a second look.

This season sees the latest staging of the famous race as part of a an extensive partnership with Leeds-based Sky Bet.
York Racecourse and its longstanding partner are committed to both cherishing and yet developing the track’s most famous race.
Today sees the next instalment of a series entitled the “Race To The Ebor” which includes four high-class staying contests, including an Irish race held at The Curragh. The four races nominated for the “Race To The Ebor” are:
Sky Bet Melrose Handicap (3YO only)
York - 1m 6f
Saturday 23 August 2025
Sky Bet Jorvik Handicap (4YO+)
York - 1m 4f
Wednesday 13 May 2026
Sky Bet Stakes (Handicap, 4YO+)
The Curragh - 1m 6f
Wednesday 3 June 2026
Sky Bet Ebor (Handicap 4YO+)
York - 1m 6f
Saturday 22 August 2026
Sky Bet Grand Cup (Listed, 4YO+)
York - 1m 6f
Saturday 13 June 2026
The winners of the four races above will be guaranteed a start position in the Sky Bet Ebor of 2025 provided they are entered and confirmed in the normal way. In a further boost to connections, if these horses run in the Sky Bet Ebor 2025 and fail to finish in the top eight places, they will have their entry fee to the race (worth £5,000) refunded, the top eight receive £5,000 or more in prize money.
In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process.
To complement this initiative, York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls: able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration.
After their respective successes in the Sky Bet Jorvik in May and the Sky Bet Stakes at the Curragh last week, William Haggas’ Klassleader and Ger Lyons’ Poetic Sound have both won themselves a “golden ticket” to the Sky Bet Ebor. They join Tarriance who landed the Sky Bet Melrose 2025 for Andrew Balding.
Klassleader landed the 2026 Sky Bet Jorvik Stakes under Tom Marquand

KNAVESMIRE TIP
AL QAREEM made light of a 5lb penalty when successful in the corresponding race last year and bids to repeat the dose Karl Burke’s five-time Group winner had the measure of Mount Atlas (second) in Listed company at Musselburgh in April and looks the one to beat once again. Tabletalk also fell victim to the selection when third here last July, although he’s weighted to finish closer this time, while Epic Poet will likely run his usual solid race.

This afternoon’s Sprint Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for even the most experienced of racegoers with a fiercely competitive field of 22 closely matched runners set to go to post. Whilst picking a lucky number or a meaningful name may produce the winner from time to time, a wiser approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology to finding the potential winner.
Narrowing down the field of 22 declared runners can prove easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps throughout the afternoon. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times, they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career rated a lofty 140. The ranking works essentially as an ability scale, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or downwards for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horse’s most recent form.
Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Man Of Vision - rated 90 - is considered 1lb “better” than Red Spells Danger who is rated 89. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight, then theoretically Man Of Vision should win as he is the better horse according to the handicapper. The handicap is therefore designed to create a level playing field and, in theory, if the handicapper was completely correct in his assessment, then all 22 runners would cross the line together. Of course, this is never the case so how do we separate those that might on a favourable mark ahead of the race?
Now we know what a handicap is and how it works, it is time to delve into the different factors to consider when searching for the winner. The winner is ultimately what we all want to find!
Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!
1) FORM
Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form and eight of the last 11 winners of this race finished in the top five on their most recent start. Five of those had arrived on the back of a victory, and the likes of Red Spells Danger, Thunder Call and Cape Ashizuri fit that bill, whilst Reciprocated and Silent Strike have a fair bit to prove arriving here on the back of poor runs.
2) THE DRAW
Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint, and this is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. However here at York, those drawn low to middle have often held the upper hand, with seven of the last ten winners of this exact race drawn in a single figure stall The likes of Thunder Call, Advertised and Chicago Pope could use this to their advantage in that their jockeys can see rivals both left and right.
3) DISTANCE
Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable, especially over this minimum trip where speed is necessary. There are five horses yet to win over the distance including Man Of Vision and Fortification, the latter stepping up from the minimum trip for the first time.
4)
GROUND
The ground, and its effect on each horse, is one of the most important, but often overlooked, factors when it comes to making a selection. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surfaces – some prefer a lightning quick surface whilst others run best when the mud is flying. Advertised and Postmodern will enjoy a quicker surface whilst Reciprocated previously won on a surface that was listed as soft. So, make sure to check the weather and the ground description.
5) YORK RECORD
“Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, especially here at York which has a knack at producing track specialists – three of the last eight winners of this contest had a previous run at York. Boston Dan and Red Spells Danger have both placed at the track previously, whilst there are four course winners amongst the field; course and distance winners First Legion and Ruby’s Angel, as well as five-furlong winners Fortification and Go Vince Go
6) CONCLUSION
Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Red Spells Danger appeals most, arriving here on the back of two straight distance victories with conditions looking likely to suit from a nice draw. Course and distance winner First Legion must enter calculations with that valuable track experience if bouncing back to form from a sliding handicap mark, and Fortification can round out the shortlist up in trip following two good efforts here at York, a victory and fourth.

Trifecta Rollover Race
The richest race today is a sprint handicap. The best on past performance will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight than the lowest rated opponent; the respective rating of Five Ways and Kind Touch sees them nigh on a stone and a half apart! This race is only open to horses aged three
If you are looking for a tip then perhaps follow the racecourse tipster, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Thunder Call was visually impressive in a maiden at Kempton but the form has taken a few knocks since and he faces a stiff introduction to handicapping. With more experience to draw upon, POSTMODERN could be the way to go Placed in two highly-competitive events in Dubai earlier in the year, the son of Too Darn Hot is wily enough to cope with the task in hand. Man Of Vision, Fortification and the class-dropping Five Ways have each-way credentials.

A unique week in 600 shared years:
Royal Ascot at York
For two racecourses that share nearly 600 years of history, perhaps just over two decades is not that long; for those amongst the more than 225,000 racegoers who attended that week, it might be that it feels a little longer. To help rekindle those memories, some images from a week that started under gloomy skies and ended in sweltering heat.

RACE DESCRIPTION
A race limited to 2yo maiden horses; meaning those yet to win.
Distance: 6f
Race Type: Maiden
Prize Money: £25,000
Age: 2
Stalls: Centre
This race is run over six furlongs, which is one of the shortest distances for thoroughbreds, so these horses will probably end up running over a mile next year when they are three-year-olds. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.
Down to your choice of the two “ps”, pedigree or pin.

INNER CITY BLUES is hard to ignore. Three pitches at the sales saw his price rise from €180,000 as a yearling through to Godolphin snapping up the son of Blue Point for €900,000 at the Arqana May Breeze-Up This fellow could be a bright prospect for his high-profile connections. Stardom Glory and Sue’s Last Chance are the pick of those with experience, while Ten Clarets is another interesting newcomer

Empire Of Light is unbeaten in his last three appearances, most recently scoring by a head in a class 3 contest at Thirsk, and he has to be considered. Pearl Eye made his third outing for Jim Goldie a winning one at Hamilton recently and is another to note, but it may pay to side with POINT OF CONTACT. Andrew Balding’s gelding wasn’t disgraced in sixth in a much hotter event over a mile here last month and the booking of Ryan Moore suggests a big run can be expected.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. We are now registered with the Access Card (nimbus) scheme which helps with advance booking.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.
