A very warm welcome to one of the most famous days of our year, celebrating the 67th staging of the John Smith’s Cup. Every summer since 1960, racing fans have tried to solve this ultra-competitive handicap which is the richest 10f handicap in Britain. Everyone will have their own system for finding the winner, however Course & Distance form should always be respected, so Thunder Run from the local yard of Karl Burke. The nature of a handicap creates an opportunity for a talented apprentice, will Mason Paetel aboard Will Scarlet follow in the footsteps of Classic winning riders, Paul Hanagan and Adam Kirby, who used their claim to maximum effect in this race?
There are two tremendous Black Type races to enjoy, the richest ever staging of the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup for stayers and the Listed John Smith’s City Walls for the sprinters. Again, a proven liking for the Knavesmire home straight will be demonstrated in the betting markets, expect to see Tabletalk as a former Sky Bet Melrose Stakes victor, near the top of many lists for the stayers.
The support of everyone from John Smith’s, now and over all those decades, as well as your own backing today, sees the prize money this afternoon at a record of just shy of half a million pounds - thank you for your support.
The entries for our big races at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival give us encouragement that many of the stars of the season, including some on show today, will return to the Knavesmire between Wednesday 19 and Saturday 22 August. Contenders in today’s races are shown by our logo next to their name Four of the six runners in the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup are entered in the Sky Bet Ebor, connections will hope to win today and then land the bulk of the £500,000 on Saturday 22 August. A couple (Mount Atlas & Tabletalk) also retain the option of staying in Pattern company by having entered the Group 2 Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup, back here on Friday 21st August; with a surprise winner holding the option of a supplementary entry for the latter contest.
The team have been busy preparing for today, please try the award-winning Bustardthorpe Development, enjoy the Churchill Tyres Lawn, and the many bars serving a pint of John Smith’s (see pages 6-7 to help find it) and local Fish ‘n’ Chips. Recently opened is The Sound Garden, a live DJ will complement the sport, with seating, Nyetimber supporting a full bar (and the likely to be useful parasols), pizza, BBQ and a big screen completing the experience. The different perspective it offers makes it well worth a visit.
I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day and may even choose to return for more of the same over Music Showcase Weekend when Craig David (Friday evening 24 July) then Tom Grennan (Saturday 25 July) will perform after racing.
Keep enjoying your sport- Come On England!

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

NEW HEDGE

We are enormously proud of our longstanding partnership with York Racecourse whose commitment to customer care at all levels is a shining example. I congratulate racecourse Chairman, Bridget Guerin, and her Committee on continuing to deliver racing of the highest quality on the Knavesmire through innovative race programming and ever increasing investment in facilities and prize money.

We enjoyed returning for the second edition of Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Summer Saturday at the end of June which is rapidly becoming one of the social highlights of the season, ahead of what promises to be another exciting renewal of the Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes in August.
I hope they and you enjoy a pleasant and successful day.

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. We are now registered with the Access Card (nimbus) scheme which helps with advance booking.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

Our opener is a handicap, with the twist that it is limited to 2yo’s and although they are the babies of the equine world their previous runs mean that they should all know what they are here to do The handicapper has judged Super Tuscan & Big Cigar to be the joint best of a still inexperienced field.
More significantly, dedicated race watchers and bookmakers will be aware of them so perhaps look for a clue in the betting market

KNAVESMIRE TIP
BIG CIGAR won his maiden well on debut at Newcastle before performing with credit when fifth and beaten less than three lengths in the Two Year Old Trophy at Beverley. His form reads well enough to think a mark of 84 on his nursery bow is workable Super Tuscan broke through in good style at Chepstow and commands respect, as does the more experienced Furturra.

AUGUST CALENDAR
With the first stage of entries received for the feature races at the
19 Wednesday
Things to do: Win a race that has thrice been best in the world
Thirty of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in the £1.5m Juddmonte International. Last year’s victor is once again entered to defend his crown for John & Thady Gosden. Ombudsman has already registered two Group One victories this season, including the Dubai Turf at Meydan and more recently the Prince Of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot. France could be well represented with the likes of Caldangan, who was last seen winning the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and last season did lower the colours of Ombudsman in the QIPCO Champion Sakes on Champions Day, he remains entered but may be focused elsewhere. French Derby and Eclipse winner Constitution River would likely be the chief hope of the Emerald Isle for Aidan O’Brien, after he romped home at Sandown, he heads fourteen potential runners from across the Irish Sea. The best British hope apart from the defending champion comes in the form of Opera Ballo for Charlie Appleby. Owned by Godolphin, the son of 2020 winner Ghaiyyath is already a Group One winner this season and currently is around a 10/1 chance.
Become the sixteenth colt to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred St Leger
Fifteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2026 could see that number increase, following Continuous’s success in 2023. Christmas Day looks to be the leading hope after he won the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante en-route to winning the Epsom Derby in truly testing conditions, giving the impression he should have no issues coping with the step up in trip. Enceladus won a competitive looking King George V at Royal Ascot, a race that has thrown up potential St Leger runners in the past. Causeway looks another Ballydoyle runner that is tailor made for the test of stamina that is the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur after his impressive win in the King Edward VII at the Royal meeting.
20 Thursday
Things to do: Prove to be one of the best fillies in Europe
The last time the race went over to mainland Europe was in 2012, when Shareta scored for Alain de Roger-Dupre, this year Les Bleus could have Sunly, in the colours of powerhouse, Juddmonte. Ballydoyle has had a strong grip on this race in recent years, winning five of the last six renewals. Minne Hauk looks likely to lead the line once more after her victory last year. Aidan O’Brien could also be represented by the unbeaten and three time Group One winning Diamond Necklace, with the only question mark around her credentials, coming in the form of her tackling an unknown trip. In all, there are a sixteen entries from the Emerald Isle, including from Aidan’s son, Joseph who could well saddle this year’s Epsom Oaks winner Thundering On. Kalpana and Estrange provide the chief home team challenge for Andrew Balding and David O’Meara respectively. The latter romped home in the Pretty Polly at the Curragh, lowering the colours of Thundering On in the process.
Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.
21 Friday
Things to do: Be the fastest
Emphatic Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes winner Bacio could bid to become the first two-year-old since Kingsgate Native (2007) to win the Friday feature. If he were to oblige, he would provide redemption for Wesley Ward, who was narrowly beaten with Lady Aurelia back in 2017. King Charles III Stakes winner Mission Central is the pick of the Emerald Isle for Aidan O’Brien. He’ll be hoping to give his trainer a winner in the race for the first time since 2001 Rayveka was only a head behind him in the same race and is the chief hope for France, while Satono Reve gives the race a truly International feel as he represents Japan.
Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar
Ireland could be well represented in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, with impressive winner, Abraham Lincoln, the pick of the entries for Aidan O’Brien. He looked mightily impressive at the Curragh on debut and is open to any amount of improvement. Carry The Flag could well join him after bouncing back from a ninth placed finish in the Norfolk, while Inner City Blues is already a York winner this season and Adaay Of Scarlett was only narrowly beaten in the Coventry in Berkshire.

Saturday
Things to do: Earn a place in the folklore of the Knavesmire - you’ve got two shots this year!
That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor. The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Jorvik winner Klassleader has only been seen once, if disappointing at Newmarket, since winning in May. Curragh winner Poetic Sound was turned out quickly after winning but looked to not stay upped two an extended two miles. Melrose victor Tarriance looked to be outclassed in the Boodles Yorkshire Cup and a return to handicapping may see him to better effect. Gregory rounds off the quartet after his narrow victory in the Grand Cup Stakes in June. Whoever wins, they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
Following Never So Brave’s victory last year in the now Group One Sky Bet City Of York Stakes all eyes will be on him to see if he can regain his crown. Group One Lockinge winner Notable Speech will be hoping to bounce back from a below par run in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot. With the William Haggas trained pair Lake Forest and More Thunder close behind him in the betting. Gstaad and True Love are two of the potential runners for Aidan O’Brien.
Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

Another competitive handicaps. Such races are designed for close competition so, the handicapper, is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
This one is for 3yo+ horses run over 1 mile, with David Of Athens & Cerulean Bay sharing top weight.
The high handicap rating band of 86-105 means that it will attract some smart types (like for Test cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer).
Why not visit the Parade Ring to see them up close before making your final selection.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
CERULEAN BAY is going to win a race of this nature sooner rather than later. Beaten just a neck into second here in May, David O’Meara’s charge wasn’t beaten far into fifth in the Royal Hunt Cup last time and that form is rock solid. Cosi Bello won on his return at Haydock and then wasn’t disgraced in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. He could bounce back to winning form, while course scorer Apiarist is another to note.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 5f
Race Type: Listed
Prize Money: £70,000
Age: 3+
Stalls: Centre
The John Smith’s City Walls is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed (like this one), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. At first principle, horses in such contests compete off a level weight, there is no handicap in operation. However, there are weight adjustments made for age though see how Military Code as one of a number of three-year-old colts takes a benefit, as well as for sex; meaning Luna A Inbhir Nis starts with less than the boys. Younger fillies like Revival Power get a double benefit and so the lightest weight. Previous success at this level or yet higher works the other way and so adds lbs, notice how Washington Heights has reaped this dubious reward for winning at Carlisle
If that is too brain-frying or you need someone to blame? Look at the Press Selections Board near the Winners Enclosure.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
AMERICAN AFFAIR couldn’t land a blow in the defence of his Group 1 King Charles III Stakes crown at Royal Ascot, but he’s worth another chance here on the class drop and boasts every chance on the form of his Temple Stakes second at Haydock. Washington Heights won a similar race at Carlisle and is respected, while Starlust likes it here and makes some each-way appeal, along with Jm Jungle

WHAT WAS THE LARGEST FIELD?
The supersize stalls purchased in 2019 means a field of 22 today The smallest came in 1969 & 1982 when only six participants lined up
HAVE THERE BEEN ANY MULTIPLE WINNERS?
Prominent (‘71 & ‘72) and Chaumiere (‘85 & ‘86). Prominent was also third twice. Five others have won the race and been placed: Town And Country, Halkopous, Mr Confusion, Pasternak & Flying Clarets.
DOES SEX MATTER?
Yes, as only one mare, Flying Clarets (‘08), has won the race since Nortia was victorious in only the third running of the race

The late Major Dick Hern
LEADING TRAINERS?
Major Dick Hern won the race six times with Proud Chieftain, Nortia, Bold Pirate, Town And Country, Bedtime and Straight Man. Of the current crop of trainers both Andrew Balding and Richard Fahey lead the way with three previous victories apiece. The former saddles Respond while Fahey has a strong hand with Have Secret, Castle Stuart and Rainbow Nebula. William Haggas is also on three after Sinjaari’s win behind closed doors in 2020, adding to Green Destiny in ‘11 and Danchai in ‘13. He has just the one runner, Yabher
LEADING RIDER?
Geoff Baxter, Willie Carson and Tony Ives have each won the race three times but all are a longtime retired. Andrea Atzeni is the only jockey to have ridden two winners in this last century (Danchai, 2013 & Farraaj, 2014) however now plies his trade in Hong Kong. PJ McDonald (Fox Legacy, 2025) & Rob Hornby (Piovine, 2019) have both ridden one winner apiece, today they ride Respond and Quai de Bethune respectively
LONGEST WINNING DISTANCE?
Halkopous won by 7 lengths in 1991. The shortest followed a dead-heat between Brave Dancer and Wolsey in 1987. Both horses finished second but were placed first in the Stewards’ Room when Knockando was demoted due to interference.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Quite well in the early years of the millennium. Richard Fahey has won it three times (Vintage Premium (02), Charlie Tokyo (07) & Flying Clarets (08)) whilst David Barron (Sirvino (09)) and Karl Burke (Achilles (99)) have also added to the tally After a lean decade, Yorkshire is well represented in this year’s contest, with Thunder Run, Danger Boy, Have Secret, Castle Stuart, Rainbow Nebula and Per Contra.
John Smith’s, based in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire has been the highest selling ale brand in the UK since the mid-1990s. John Smith’s Extra Smooth and Original are produced at Tadcaster, as well as a range of Heineken products including Kronenbourg 1664 and Newcastle Brown Ale. With a 3.8 million hectolitre capacity, the brewery is one of the largest in the country

KNAVESMIRE TIP
May C&D winner WARRANT HOLDER lost little in defeat when runner-up in the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot and he makes plenty of appeal racing off an unchanged mark. The four-year-old is 6lb well-in and he may be able to thwart the hat-trick seeking Yabher William Haggas’ inmate arrives on the back of an easy reappearance victory at Goodwood and there should be more to come Danger Bay also made a successful seasonal bow when landing the spoils at Redcar and he’s still open to improvement on just his seventh career outing, while Raammee is a potential improver stepping up in trip WARRANT HOLDER YABHER

RACE DESCRIPTION

Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 61-80
Prize Money: £25,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Inside Rail
Those ticklish handicaps to solve keep a coming, this is over the longest distance of the day, some 2 miles. As stamina is required, it is perhaps no surprise that the majority of the field are that bit older and so a little better known to punters and bookies alike. Will six-year-old such as Rock N Roll Pinkie win them over today?

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Although a beaten favourite at Goodwood last time, Cruden finished a respectable second and was eight lengths clear of his nearest pursuer. Dan Horsford’s inmate has shaped like this longer trip could unlock some improvement and another good account is forecast, but Pontefract winner SECRET FORCE may prove too strong. The four-year-old travelled with real verve in a first-time visor and a 4lb higher mark looks workable given that he scored a shade cosily Last year’s winner Terrorise is a feasible alternative.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 1m 6f
Race Type: Group Three
Prize Money: £100,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Inside Rail
Our fourth race flips back to those Pattern conditions, this time it is actually a step higher up in quality, being a Group 3.
This race is open to 4yo+ horses and is over a trip of 1 mile 6 furlongs. As you might now expect there is a reduction for being a mare, note Peace Belle There would also be a penalty for having won at a good level, only this year the field have made it easier for us by none having recently recorded a W at this level.
Remember the winner because previous victors have gone on to contest Australia’s best-known race, the Lexus Melbourne Cup, with four of them today entered in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor, set for Saturday 22nd August.
Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance, Tabletalk has both initials.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
There is a strong temptation to focus on Tabletalk and Mount Atlas, who finished second and third in that order in a Listed event over C&D in mid-June Both have the quality to be key players and are unlikely to be too far away However, this race has a habit of not entirely following the script and ARABIAN FORCE could be another to get one over on better-fancied market rivals. A consistent performer at this sort of level, the still low-mileage four-year-old has gone well here before and looks the value call with ground conditions in his favour

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Several of these contested this race last year and while Juan Les Pins fared the best of those with a close-up third, FISCAL POLICY was only a neck behind in fourth and he could be the answer this time running off 5lb lower. The selection’s recent form has been highly encouraging and he looks worth another chance after only just failing to justify favouritism at Newmarket 16 days ago. Glory Hyde arrives in search of a four-timer and commands plenty of respect, along with Betties Bay.
