It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to York for what looks set to be a super evening of racing plus music. Our only evening meeting of the year means Music Showcase, an event that combines top class racing with great headline music acts. We very much look forward to the performance of the returning Craig David, this time presenting TS5.
This is also the penultimate day of The Sky Bet Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival, now in its eighteenth year and firmly established thanks to the generous and loyal backing of our week-long sponsors: Sky Bet and Goldsborough Hall. The nominated charity for this festival is Yorkshire Air Ambulance and well done to David Easterby on his sponsored cycle ride to all the racecourses this week in aid of YAA.
In Yorkshire we have nine superb racecourses, over 100 training yards, the National Racing College at Doncaster, Jack Berry House in Malton, and Goffs Bloodstock Sales, all making for a successful racing industry in the county Yorkshire trainers and jockeys are flying high this season with tremendous results across the UK’s best meetings and Europe – we are proud to be a part of such a successful sport in the County which was the cradle of the thoroughbred breed.
The most generous support of tonight’s sponsors has also helped offer record prize money approaching £200,000, with a Listed contest, the British Stallion Studs EBF Lyric, as the valuable feature. An interesting clash of the generations sees Estissa, a three -year-old filly from the yard of James Fanshawe, continue her development against an experienced campaigner in the form of five-year-old Diamond Rain. The Charlie Appleby trained mare has already run nine times at this level or higher, winning twice in the blue of Godolphin.

A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse, it will operate whilst there are enough customers to make a bus viable, after the last race as well as after the concert. There is a hackney carriage/licensed taxi pick up point at the Northern End of the racecourse integrated into Car Park D, adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at designated points in both Car Park A (north) and Car Park C (south). Pick up by UBER is from a dedicated area in Car Park A & C only.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Like a tourist in a foreign country, the novice racegoer soon picks up enough of the language to get by, and then rapidly becomes fluent.

The last time the race went over to mainland Europe was in 2012, when Shareta scored for Alain de Roger-Dupre, this year Les Bleus could have Sunly, in the colours of powerhouse, Juddmonte. Ballydoyle has had a strong grip on this race in recent years, winning five of the last six renewals. Minne Hauk looks likely to lead the line once more after her victory last year. Aidan O’Brien could also be represented by the unbeaten and three time Group One winning Diamond Necklace, with the only question mark around her credentials, coming in the form of her tackling an unknown trip. Rayveka was only a head behind him in the same race and is the chief hope for France, while Satono Reve gives the race a truly International feel as he represents Japan.

That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor. The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Jorvik winner Klassleader has only been seen once, if disappointing at Newmarket, since winning in May. Curragh winner Poetic Sound was turned out quickly after winning but looked to not stay upped two an extended two miles. Melrose victor Tarriance looked to be outclassed in the Boodles Yorkshire Cup and a return to handicapping may see him to better effect. Gregory rounds off the quartet after his narrow victory in the Grand Cup Stakes in June. HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE A BIG SPRINT HANDICAP?
TOMAHAWK STAKES SOLVE
This evening’s Sprint Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for even the most experienced of racegoers with a fiercely competitive field of 22 closely matched runners set to go to post. Whilst picking a lucky number or ameaningful name may produce thewinner from time to time, a wiser approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology to finding the potential winner.
Narrowing down the field of 22 declared runners can prove easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps throughout the afternoon. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times, they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career rated a lofty 140. The ranking works essentially as an ability scale, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or downwards for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horse’s most recent form.
Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Magic Boy - rated 76 - is considered 1lb “better” than Fiscal Policy who is rated 75. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight, then theoretically Magic Boy should win as he is the better horse according to the handicapper. The handicap is therefore designed to create a level playing field and, in theory, if the handicapper was completely correct in his assessment, then all 22 runners would cross the line together. Of course, this is never the case so how do we separate those that might on a favourable mark ahead of the race?
Now we know what a handicap is and how it works, it is time to delve into the different factors to consider when searching for the winner. The winner is ultimately what we all want to find!
Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!
1) FORM
Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form and those arriving on the back of a positive performance last time out, especially in such a competitive contest. The likes of recent Doncaster winner Sugar Baby and York scorer Magic Boy fit that bill, whilst Who Wants Me arrives here in red-hot form having won his last two and chases the hattrick for Iain Jardine.
2) THE DRAW
Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint, and this is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. However here at York, those drawn low to middle have often held the upper hand and in fact four of the last five winners were drawn between stalls 3 and 9. The likes of Spirit Of Applause, Ingleby Archie and Bonnie’s Boy could use this to their advantage in that their jockeys can see rivals both left and right.
3) DISTANCE
Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable, especially over this six-furlong trip where speed is necessary. Eight of the previous nine victors of this contest were prior distance winners and there are just four horses in this year’s field who cannot count such a victory on their record: Beattie Is Back, Tiva, Who Wants Me and Bonnie’s Boy
4) GROUND
The ground, and its effect on each horse, is one of the most important, but often overlooked, factors when it comes to making a selection. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surfaces – some prefer a lightning quick surface whilst others run best when the mud is flying. Rajaking and Magic Boy will enjoy a quicker surface whilst Tolstoy’s last three victories came on a softer surface. Today’s conditions are likely to be quick but make sure to check the ground description.
5) YORK RECORD
“Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, especially here at York which has a knack at producing track specialists. There are four course and distance winners amongst today’s field – Ingleby Archie, Magic Boy, Dicko The Legend and Aberama Gold – whilst Tolstoy is a three-time course winner, but over the longer trip of seven furlongs.
6) CONCLUSION
Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Magic Boy appeals most, arriving here on the back of strong course and distance victory here last time, and he can progress further with conditions once again in his favour. Dicko The Legend must enter calculations, having won the last two renewals of this race, and he has slipped back down in the weights as he bids for the hattrick. Rajaking can round out the shortlist, arriving here in good form on the back of positive placed efforts at Windsor and Newmarket. He looks ready to strike from his current handicap mark and looks ideally suited to conditions from a good draw.

Abandoned Racing
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on badges and tickets purchased will only be paid in the following circumstances.
a) before the first race - 100% refund.
b) before the completion of three races or a minimum of 30 minutes of music - 50% refund.
c) thereafter - no refund applies.
The terms of the insurance scheme which racegoers had the option to purchase at time of booking shall apply. Refunds cannot be made on racedays. To obtain a refund, racegoers who purchased their admission on the day should send the ticket they were given on entrance with their full name and address to: York Racecourse, York, YO23 1EX within 30 days. Racegoers who booked in advance direct with the track and so paid by card will receive an automatic refund. A similar process will apply for those who paid in advance by cheque. Alcohol And Public Order
The Racecourse takes its responsibilities under Licensing Laws very seriously and puts in place training and measures to exceed these obligations. Racegoers are urged to drink responsibly. Alcohol cannot be brought into the stands side enclosures. York Racecourse reserves the right to expel any person found to be drunk or behaving in a disorderly manner.
The “Challenge 25” initiative will be in operation to ensure that only those aged 18 and over are served with alcohol. Thank you for your support of this obligation.
Cameras
Please feel free to take a souvenir photo of your day. However we would remind you that the preparation and performance of the sport must be ensured, so please note:-
1. Kindly refrain from flash photography.
2. Avoid taking photos in restricted areas used by the sporting professionals i.e. Saddling Boxes, Stables, Unsaddling Boxes & Weighing Room.
3. Respect the privacy of others.
Cigarettes and e-cigarettes
The current smoking legislation regarding smoking in public places applies at the racecourse. The use of e-cigarettes is permitted, however they will be treated the same as tobacco products.
Common Courtesy/Entry Conditions
All persons visiting York Racecourse are admitted subject to Racecourse Regulations and the Rules of Racing. The Racecourse reserves the right to refuse admission or remove from the racecourse any person refusing to comply with the Rules and Regulations or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others.

Dogs
Racegoers are requested to leave their pets including all dogs at home. Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome.
HBLB
The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry
First Aid
There are first aid posts in the Edwardian Weighing Room, other such buildings have been designated as isolation rooms, should they be required.
Dress Standards
Most racegoers like to make racing at York a special occasion and choose to dress accordingly. Given the weather forecast, the dress code in the County Stand has been relaxed for today - a jacket is not required. However, a collared shirt and tie is still required in County Stand for Gentlemen and those identifying as such. Appropriate shorts are fine. It has always been the case that appropriate shorts and t-shirts have been welcome in Grandstand and Paddock and Clocktower. All racegoers are reminded that the removal of shirts is not acceptable and that basic decency so not causing offence to fellow racegoers by clothing choices, is required. York Racecourse reserves the right to refuse or to require anyone to leave who does not observe the above code.
Drugs
A zero tolerance policy on drug abuse is in force, be warned, North Yorkshire Police and our own team are watching with some canine help, sniffing.
Litter
Racegoers are requested to place all litter in the receptacles provided. If you do not need your racecard please place it in a bin as you leave the racecourse.
Noise
So that the horses have the best chance to perform and so your fellow racegoers have the opportunity to enjoy them please do not cause any distractions; the waving of flags or banners, use of radios or making of sudden noises are examples of things to avoid. Racegoers are reminded of Public Health England advice that shouting increases the risk of the spread of diseases, so to consider wearing your face covering when part of a cheering crowd.
Parade Ring
For safety reasons children under the age of twelve are not permitted into the Parade Ring or Unsaddling Enclosure.
Photo Finishes And Stewards’ Enquiries/Objections
In any race where Photo Finish has been called by the Judge, this information will be displayed on the Giant Screen. An announcement will also be broadcast. Race Results and Photographs will also be displayed on the York Racecourse television monitors.
Radios and Mobile Telephones
The use of all types of communication equipment is strictly controlled at all racecourses. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc., for any purpose at the racecourse.
Track Safety
For your own safety and the welfare of the horses, jockeys and stable staff please keep off the track.
Anyone trespassing on the track: Will be liable to arrest and prosecution Will be ejected immediately Will be banned from all future York race meetings May face a nationwide racecourse ban.
A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception. As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. We are now registered with the Access Card (nimbus) scheme which helps with advance booking.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands, as well as for the Music Stage - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?
