Welcome A very warm welcome to a day of both speed and endurance at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. The race programme features both the fastest race of our season – the Group 1 Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe, as well as our richest staying race – the Group 2 Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup. The Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe is part of the “win and you’re in” Breeders Cup Challenge Series for the Turf Sprint. It also offers the winner the chance of earning a new, unique trophy in the Golden Horseshoe Challenge, after victory today all they need to do is take up their free entry into the Flying Five at The Curragh next month…..then win it! The feature sprint puts a spotlight on some of the quickest horses; battling it out for a prize fund of £600,000. It is a race run in under a minute, so take your place, hold your breath and enjoy. A fascinating and rare aspect is that horses in the very first year of racing can take on their elders, at the highest level. The juveniles are compensated by a reduction in weight and yet more if they are fillies. To put that in numbers, Pershaada carries 8 stone 2lbs being nigh on two stone less than the five-year-old Night Raider, yet both are about the same price with the bookies at 12/1. The race has contestants from England, Scotland (American Affair), Ireland (Mission Central), USA (Bacio), and Australia (Asfoora). Trained in the state of Victoria, Asfoora, is hoping her last ever race will be a defence of her title, we wish her well in both the race and life thereafter. Amongst seventeen rivals is Bacio trained in Florida by Wesley Ward, his rider Juan Hernandez faces an afternoon of fast horses, fast cars and fast planes as he jets home immediately after the race - he is riding in California tomorrow! Earlier in the day and it’ll be the turn of the leading juveniles in the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes it will tell us which connections are to address the 255th Gimcrack Dinner. At the other end of both trip and experience is the return to the track of nine-year-old Quickthorn in the Group 2 Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup over two miles. The Hughie Morrison-trained stayer lifted the cup back in 2022. The “World Pool Moment of the Day”, is an initiative that sees an expert panel select a highlight on each of the three weekdays. The member of racing staff from the yard who looks after the horse awarded “World Pool Moment of the Day” will win £4,000. The winner will also be in with a chance of winning “World Pool Moment of the Year”. World Pool itself is in operation today for all tote bets as it is for each of the four days of Ebor for the first time. As explained on page 28, World Pool is a tremendous initiative in globalising world betting and helping the sport we love. We are operating Tote Guarantee on course today and if your bet with through your tote account, the tote are offering money back 2nd for digital on all York races. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 9

Day two kicked off with a cracking renewal of the Sky Bet Lowther, that saw George Boughey continue his fine season with Libertango taking home the prize.
Andrew Balding’s star mare Kalpana picked up her second Group One of the season after a fine staying performance under Colin Keane.
The Royal Ascot winner was uneasy in the market before the race, despite bringing some of the best form to the contest.
As expected, Sugar Island set out to make the running under Ronan Whelan, with the pair putting a huge distance between themselves and the rest of the field.
The race began with the eventual winner slightly missing the break, but Billy Loughnane remained cool and composed, positioning his mount at the back of the pack in order to deliver a late run.
Despite the remainder being so far back, the jockeys all looked confident they would reel in the runaway leader. And reel her in they did, as her lead began to diminish rapidly down the home straight.
Miss Kodi was the first to challenge the initial pace-setter Shimmering Sun, as Rossa Ryan went about his work at the two-furlong pole.
Colin Keane could be picked out in the Juddmonte silks, travelling powerfully aboard the five-year-old. Juddmonte Irish Oaks winner Johanna Walsh also looked to be going well, but the end-to-end gallop soon took its toll and she began to fade back through the pack.
The well-fancied Star Of State spied a gap between the pair, showing a superior turn of foot to take up the running as they thundered towards the winning line. The Joseph O’Brien-trained filly looked as though she was going to come home a ready winner under Dylan Browne McMonagle, but Billy Loughnane had other ideas as he switched Libertango to challenge up the inside rail. As the line approached, the two settled down to fight it out between themselves, but it was the daughter of No Nay Never who prevailed in the end.
The race had been set up perfectly for Minnie Hauk and she too began to thunder down the outside. However, she had conceded first run to the eventual winner and was forced to settle for third. Sparan Nua emerged as the biggest danger despite being under a drive a long way from home. She was closing with every stride under Rossa Ryan, but the line came just in time for Kalpana, who held on to win by a short head.
Jolivette stayed on well to complete the podium in what was a thrilling contest
In doing so, she became the first five-year-old since Alpinista to win the race and provided a second Group One win in as many days for Juddmonte.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Outback Heat fared best of those who ran in the Britannia when beating all bar Moonfall but although a 5lb rise seems more than fair, a wide draw in stall 18 is a concern. Exclusive Code got the better of ZENNOR STORM at Goodwood, but a 4lb swing in the weights is in the latter’s favour and it would be no surprise if that form was reversed. William Haggas’ gelding produced his best effort of the campaign with cheekpieces applied for the first time and further progression is expected. THE WEATHERBYS LONSDALE CUP (GROUP 2) A BRIEF HISTORY

The race started life as a Listed contest and was called the Lonsdale Stakes, run over 1m7f198y. It was promoted to Group 3 level in 1998, before being renamed the Lonsdale Cup and given Group 2 status in 2004. The distance was extended by 110 yards in 2007.

Race preview from Weatherbys It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring the Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup Stakes at York this afternoon, a race we have been proud to support for almost 30 years.
success in the Prix du Cadran last October. He achieved a second Group 1 at Longchamp in May but must bounce back from a lastplaced finish in the Gold Cup last time, given a healthy break since.
The Gosden stable have won the race a joint-record five times and, in the absence of recently retired 2025 winner Trawlerman, the yard relies on French Master here. Just held in second when staying on strongly down the centre in the Queen Alexandra Stakes, he finished a distant fourth in the Goodwood Cup last time but did reverse form with the Royal Ascot victor on that occasion.
Amiloc was unfortunate to unseat Rossa Ryan leaving the stalls at Goodwood last time but remains open to plenty of improvement on his first real crack at this two-mile trip. Last year’s King Edward VII Stakes winner closed his season with an excellent fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf and must hold strong claims if his stamina holds up.
The Queen Alexandra winner was Illinois, who benefits from Ryan Moore back in the saddle after weakening away in the final two furlongs at Goodwood. A dual Group 2 winner and runner-up in last year’s Gold Cup, he has plenty of class if able to show his best. George Scott’s Caballo De Mar has enjoyed a stellar rise up the ranks during his career, winning a handicap from a mark of 64 two years ago and ascending all the way to the top with a Group 1 WEATHERBYS RACE PREVIEW 42
Tom Clover’s eight-year-old Al Nayyir has finished second and third in the last two renewals of this race and will be bidding to add that elusive victory to his record, already a Group 3 winner at Meydan this year. Mount Atlas took Group 3 honours in the Silver Cup here last month and steps up to this trip for the first time, whilst new Willie Mullins recruit Colombus is an intriguing runner. Quickthorn won this race by a whopping 14 lengths in 2022 but does have an almost-two year layoff to contend with.

AGE Although three-year-olds are eligible for the Lonsdale Cup, the Classic generation easily have the worst record in the race, so hardly a shock that this year none have been declared. When it comes to positives, the most successful age group are the five-year-olds, so keep a close eye on Caballo de Mar, Columbus, French Master, Illinois and Mount Atlas. TRAINER John Gosden has won this three times thanks to Stradivarius in 2018 and '19, and in 2021 with Enbihaar. Trawlerman continued his golden streak in 2025. Today French Master will fly the Clarehaven flag. BETTING Montaly triumphed in 2017 at odds of 16/1 and whilst Millenary (12/1) and Times Up (11/1) have also provided small shocks, they have proved the exception rather than the rule as those towards the head of the market. RECENT FORM Stayers tend to mature as the season goes on and therefore it isn’t completely surprising to note that only four recent winners of this race had been successful on their previous start. However, only one of the last ten winners of this race had not achieved a top four finish last time which suggests that it is the form horses coming into the race that are the group to focus on. CLASS Opinion Poll, Pale Mimosa, Max Dynamite and, most recently, Montaly all went on to win the Lonsdale Cup having not contested a Group race on their most recent start, but on the whole these are exceptional in that respect. Every other winner contested either a Group 1 or 2 contest on their previous outing. CONCLUSION The fine record of Clarehaven puts French Master near the top of the trends as their sole representative. Unlike some of their previous winners, he is less well found in the marker, which would be a negative. He did manage to fourth in Group 1 company last time out however, so he could be a player at a bigger price. William Buick is another that has been successful in recent years and his mount Al Nayyir is likely to prove popular. He has placed in Group company already on the Knavesmire this season, so expect him to shorten in the betting. MOUNT ATLAS just edges the trends this time around after winning the John Smith's Silver Cup back in July. RACE DESCRIPTION The Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3, Group 2 (like this one) and Group 1. This race is open to 3yo+ horses, run over two miles which is the longest distance of the week. Weight allowances are granted based on age, gender and previous success. KNAVESMIRE TIP CABALLO DE MAR tried to serve it up to Scandinavia and Trawlerman in the Gold Cup before weakening quickly and being virtually pulled up towards the finish. He has been given time to recover from those exertions and, given he landed a Group 1 contest on soft going in France prior to that, George Scott’s inmate is taken to bounce back. Amiloc’s sixth in the Hardwicke would give him an obvious chance if seeing out the distance, while Mount Atlas has looked better than ever this year and will handle any cut in the ground.

Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York. The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough. The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree. Coming up to date and Coolmore, sponsors of today’s feature race, continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Originally, a relatively small farm, owner Tim Vigors, a famous fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain, began transforming it in 1968 and after going into partnership with Vincent O’Brien and Robert Sangster the three men built it up into the well-known stud farm it is today. Vigors sold his interest to O’Brien and his son-in-law John Magnier and it was Magnier who built the stud into a multi-national, multi-billion-euro operation. On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse. Coolmore’s greatest stallion, Galileo, who was sadly lost in 2021 at the age of 23, destroyed his rivals in both the Epsom Derby and the Irish equivalent before completing an impressive hat-trick in the King George at Ascot. Following his retirement, he was Champion Sire in 12 different years and in August 2024, almost two years ago to the day today, achieved a century of Group 1 winners when Content won the Yorkshire Oaks.

If you were to glance at his most successful progeny, you would see that he has sired many of the best racehorses in recent years, making an indelible mark on modern horse racing. These include Frankel, New Approach, Australia and Gleneagles - all now stallions in their own right but this is by no means a coincidence. Galileo was not only a super sire, but he made his name as a sire of sires, with more than 20 of his sons having sired Group 1 winners in their own right, and that trait has no doubt been passed on from his sire Sadler’s Wells. He too stood at Coolmore and comes from the Northern Dancer line, regarded as one of the most productive bloodlines in the history of thoroughbred racing. In Galileo’s stead, Coolmore now stand numerous big race winners in Camelot, who sired this year’s Epsom Derby winner Christmas Day. Churchill and more recently Saxon Warrior, St Mark’s Basilica and Paddington, all looking to continue their huge influence on the bloodstock world. This afternoon’s feature race title nods at yet another whose prospects continue to look as bright as his on-course career, City Of Troy. Australia is another that has proven himself as a top sire for Coolmore. Sire to 76 Flat Stakes performers and 25 Group Winners, his standout recent performer came in the form of 2025 hero Lambourn, who won both the Epsom and Irish Derby’s.

To mark his passing, Sam Burr, daughter of his late Owner Terry Cooper, accompanied by his trainer Rod Millman will scatter some of his ashes today. Bought by Terry for a pittance from his long-time racing friend and breeder Don Hazzard, Sergeant Cecil was the epitome of a slow burner. Instantly recognisable, the chestnut with the white blaze needed 14 attempts to win his first race but with age came maturity, stamina and courage. He progressed to win 10 of 53 outings amassing prize money of more than £820,000 – four of those victories coming at York.

Away from here, was his elevation to Group 1 status in the 2006 Prix du Cadran, the European stayers’ championship, under Frankie Dettori at Longchamp.

Named after Terry’s military father, Sergeant Cecil last ran in 2008 and enjoyed a contented retirement under Terry’s care. When the celebrated thoroughbred died in 2024 aged 25, it was the owner’s wish that the ashes of his pride and joy be scattered on the Knavesmire where he enjoyed more success than anywhere else. 51

DISTANCE Nine of the last thirteen winners of this race had previously won over this 6f trip suggesting that the proven ability to stay the trip is becoming more and more important compared to the noughties, when many had not yet graduated from five furlongs. Arapaho Gold, Final Objecive, Great Oak and Never Enough have all won over six furlongs. BETTING In the last decade there have been only three winning favourites of the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack, with the last coming in 2021. However don't stray too far from those at the front of the market, with only two of the last ten winners obliging at a double figure price. CONCLUSION A wide open renewal of the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack is currently headed by Arapaho Gold. While favourites don't have an inspiring record, he is one of only four with a rating above 102, which has traditionally been a good bench mark. He is also unbeaten but this wouldn't necessarily anymore appealing than a horse who has previously placed on their most recent start. Kevin Ryan's impressive record in the race makes Matteo an interesting proposition but both his wins have come over five furlongs, which is starting to become more of a negative. FINAL OBJECTIVE sits just two below the magic 102 but apart from that, he looks to be rock solid on the remaining trends. KNAVESMIRE TIP ARAPAHO GOLD displayed an excellent attitude when fending off a subsequent winner in a Listed contest at Newbury to maintain his unbeaten record. Michael Dods’ gelding is likely to have more to offer, especially as the third home Agamemnon boosted the form further by placing in a Group 3 at Deauville. Adaay Of Scarlett brings arguably a stronger level of form with runner-up efforts in the Coventry, July Stakes and the Richmond. That said, he may prove vulnerable to less-exposed types, despite wearing first-time cheekpieces. Marco Polo has to warrant respect after his debut second at the Curragh, while Norfolk third Mussab should benefit from going back up in trip.

This award remembers Ray Gilpin, a popular figure in both the Weighing Room & Press Room who sadly passed away in 2015. JUVENILES IN THE COOLMORE NUNTHORPE It takes less than a minute to win the Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe, but a very special type of juvenile to get close, let alone win what is now one of the top sprints in Europe. The Nunthorpe has been a Group 1 since 1984, before then two-yearolds enjoyed some success- High Treason, My Beau and Ennis all put their elders in their place in the 1950’s but in more modern times it has been done just twice, by horses rightly called “speedballs.”
Lyric Fantasy
Probably the most famous came in 1992 when the amazing Lyric Fantasy, arrived on the Knavesmire unbeaten, with a series of wins that included the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot.
Known as ‘The Pocket Rocket’ she provided Richard Hannon senior with one of his most memorable days as the flying filly saw off stablemate Mr Brooks, who had been sent off as favourite having won the Group One July Cup. Somehow jockey Michael ‘Muis’ Roberts managed his weight to ride Lyric Fantasy at a now scarce believable 7st 8lb - it was a huge performance by horse and rider. A little more recently, in 2007, jockey Jimmy Quinn enjoyed probably the most memorable day of his career. He was aboard Kingsgate Native, then trained by John Best, as the pairing took advantage of the significant weight concession to storm home from Desert Lord and Dandy Man, with stars like Amadeus Wolf and Red Clubs trailing in their wake.

Others have tried and come close- the year before Lyric Fantasy the Jack Berry trained Paris House had come second, beaten only by legendary champion sprinter, Sheikh Albadou. Acapulco sent the Coolmore team loco in 2015, having won the Group 2 Queen Mary, she finished second to Mecca’s Angel. A little over twenty years later in 2022, another locally trained star finished in the same silver medal slot. Richard Fahey sent out The Platinum Queen to find only another legend, Highfield Princess, too fast. Just three years ago, the Mick Appleby trained Big Evs was sent to post as a 5-1 chance to join the Roll of Honour- but sadly things did not work out and he only beat two horses home on the day that Live in the Dream so memorably grabbed the headlines. So, it is hugely to the credit of connections of Pershaada that they took the opportunity of the new secondary stage entry to give their progressive filly her shot. 57

The field in the Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe demonstrate the global nature of top class flat racing competition. To further encourage this competition, various famous racing associations around the world have offered attractive incentives to the winner.
Those running in today’s Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe could well show up in the final sprint race on Qatar Racing British Champions Day, Britain’s richest raceday with £4.35 million in prize money on Saturday 17th October.
The field in the Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe demonstrate the global nature of top class flat racing competition. To further encourage this competition Breeders’ Cup Ltd have offered an attractive incentive to the winner as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. The successful sprinter this afternoon if nominated with Breeders’ Cup will receive both free entry and a guaranteed start gate in the five furlong $1m Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint to be run at Keeneland, Kentucky on Saturday October 31st. Combined with a travel allowance of $40,000 this is a bonus to California bound connections and this represents an exciting innovation this year. The feature contests on Wednesday and Thursday had connections and benefits to their equivalent contests; with the Tattersalls Acomb adding a juvenile link, on the same principles.
The fastest horse of the week will receive a guaranteed place in the stalls for the Bar One Racing Flying Five Stakes at The Curragh on Sunday 13 September. It will also be the only horse eligible to win the new Golden Horseshoe Challenge, securing a unique perpetual trophy that celebrates a sprinter who won a Group One on both sides of the Irish Sea.

AMERICAN CONNECTION The race became part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series in 2011 which means the winner of this year’s race earns an automatic invitation to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland, Kentucky on Saturday 31st October. Star US-trained filly, Acapulco ran an eye catching second in 2015 and Lady Aurelia filled the same spot in 2017, just pipped at the post by Marsha in a thriller. Bacio will attempt today what Golden Pal failed to do back in 2021 for Wesley Ward.

Mecca’s Angel scored for the second year in a row for Michael Dods and the North in 2016. RACE DESCRIPTION Our feature race, as a Group One, is of the highest possible quality attracting the best sprinters in training. Made for the fastest of the fast at just five furlongs; it is also one of the few contests where all horses of all ages go head-to-head, hence Pershaada taking a reduction to just 8 stone 2lb. Other weight allowances are granted based on age, gender and previous success. As a three-year-old filly, Fitzella carries just 9st 10lb, whilst an older horse like Night Raider has 10st 1lb as a burden. KNAVESMIRE TIP We haven’t seen a three-year-old winner since 2021 but if the betting is correct that could change with American raider BACIO all the rage. He was last seen making all for a four length success at Royal Ascot, and although that was a handicap he could step forward sufficiently to win this. Mission Central looked all at sea over the six furlongs of the July Cup but back in trip he looks the likeliest to run the jolly down, while Asfoora won this last year and is hunting for a final hurrah.

Abandoned Racing
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on badges and tickets purchased will only be paid in the following circumstances. a) before the first race - 100% refund. b) before the completion of three races - 50% refund. c) thereafter - no refund applies. The terms of the insurance scheme which racegoers had the option to purchase at time of booking shall apply. Refunds cannot be made on racedays. To obtain a refund, racegoers who purchased their admission on the day should send the ticket they were given on entrance with their full name and address to: York Racecourse, York, YO23 1EX within 30 days. Racegoers who booked in advance direct with the track and so paid by card will receive an automatic refund. A similar process will apply for those who paid in advance by cheque. Cameras
Please feel free to take a souvenir photo of your day. However we would remind you that the preparation and performance of the sport must be ensured, so please note:1. Kindly refrain from flash photography. 2. Avoid taking photos in restricted areas used by the sporting professionals i.e. Saddling Boxes, Stables, Unsaddling Boxes & Weighing Room. 3. Respect the privacy of others.
Cigarettes and e-cigarettes
The current smoking legislation regarding smoking in public places applies at the racecourse. The use of e-cigarettes is permitted, however they will be treated the same as tobacco products.
Common Courtesy/Entry Conditions
All persons visiting York Racecourse are admitted subject to Racecourse Regulations and the Rules of Racing. The Racecourse reserves the right to refuse admission or remove from the racecourse any person refusing to comply with the Rules and Regulations or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others. Dogs
Racegoers are requested to leave their pets including all dogs at home. Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome.
HBLB
The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry
First Aid
There are first aid posts in the Edwardian Weighing Room, other such buildings have been designated as isolation rooms, should they be required.
Dress Standards
Most racegoers like to make racing at York a special occasion and choose to dress accordingly. Gentlemen (and those identifying as such) in the County Stand required to wear a jacket, collared shirt and tie. It has always been the case that shorts and t-shirts have been welcome in Grandstand and Paddock. All racegoers are reminded that the removal of shirts is not encouraged and that basic decency and not causing offence to fellow racegoers by clothing choices, is required. York Racecourse reserves the right to refuse or, to require anyone to leave who does not observe the above code.
Drugs
A zero tolerance policy on drug abuse is in force, be warned, North Yorkshire Police and our own team are watching with some canine help, sniffing.
Litter
Racegoers are requested to place all litter in the receptacles provided. If you do not need your racecard please place it in a bin as you leave the racecourse.
Noise
So that the horses have the best chance to perform and so your fellow racegoers have the opportunity to enjoy them please do not cause any distractions; the waving of flags or banners, use of radios or making of sudden noises are examples of things to avoid. Racegoers are reminded of Public Health England advice that shouting increases the risk of the spread of diseases, so to consider wearing your face covering when part of a cheering crowd.
Parade Ring
For safety reasons children under the age of twelve are not permitted into the Parade Ring or Unsaddling Enclosure.
Photo Finishes And Stewards’ Enquiries/Objections
In any race where Photo Finish has been called by the Judge, this information will be displayed on the Giant Screen. An announcement will also be broadcast. Race Results and Photographs will also be displayed on the York Racecourse television monitors.
Radios and Mobile Telephones
The use of all types of communication equipment is strictly controlled at all racecourses. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc., for any purpose at the racecourse.
Track Safety
For your own safety and the welfare of the horses, jockeys and stable staff please keep off the track. Anyone trespassing on the track: Will be liable to arrest and prosecution Will be ejected immediately Will be banned from all future York race meetings May face a nationwide racecourse ban. 95
