A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the final day of the Dante Festival 2025, one of 16 remaining, exciting racedays this season, that we look forward to hosting.
Since the last Dante Festival, we are all honoured and proud to have collected some awards for our 2024 season, notably the Juddmonte International being ranked at Longines World’s Best Horse Race and York being recognised as Overall Showcase Champions at the RCA Showcase Awards. Please see page [24]. Thank you for your support last year, we are striving to keep improving your experience again this year
York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport, so attracting the best horses to the Knavesmire, for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival is more than £1.5m as part of the £12m across the season. This year, every race at York will be run for at least £25,000 – the highest of any racecourse in Britain so rewarding a wide set of connections. Let’s hope we see a similar quality of winners to last year when the winners of all four Group Two contests this week became Group One victors by Christmas (for the curious, from this equivalent day, Giavellotto won the Boodles Yorkshire Cup prior to a triumph some 6,000 miles from here in the Hong Kong Vase.)
As the picture for Epsom and other European Classics perhaps has become clearer after Whirl won the Tattersalls Musidora and Pride Of Arras took home
The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante. Yorkshire owners of the latter, David and Viny Aykroyd are already looking forward to Epsom. Our attention today switches to the stayers. With a record of near £500,000 in prize money on offer for today’s card, we are set to see some wonderful horses, notably in the Group 2 Boodles Yorkshire Cup Trained by Aidan O’Brien, Continuous, is one with a winning festival record here, looking to continue a fabulous May for Coolmore connections. Rebel’s Romance is the latest Godolphin runner to receive a Supplementary Entry, so he is clearly well thought of at home
More of those quality thoroughbreds will go to post in today’s other six races, given the blistering start to the season by the Owen Burrows team best look out for Glittering Surf in the Listed fillies race backed by Sky Bet.
Notebooks or iPad to the ready wherever you look today as some highly regarded fillies undertake the Listed Clipper EBF Marygate Stakes. What’s more, a race only in its third season, a novice affair backed by both Darley and the EBF could well highlight a rising star
If you need help finding the winner, then try the “SmartView” version of the form on page 53, by kind courtesy of the Racing Post.
This can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. Many thanks to Boodles, Knights Solicitors, Sky Bet, Yorkshire Equine Practice, Darley and the European Breeders’ Fund, for their valuable backing. The continuing support of those unable to with us this afternoon is also much appreciated.
The team have been busy preparing for your return, it is the first Dante Festival for the award-winning Bustardthorpe Development (see pages 34-35), enjoy the Churchill Tyres Lawn, Theakston or Guinness Bars to wash down some fresh, local Fish ‘n’ Chips.
Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is back with us; do go and say hello to him and our partner team from New Beginnings.
This week Racing Welfare are leading the sport through Mental Health Awareness Week, we are proud to play our part. The “sunflower” benches spread around the course offer a chance for a quiet moment of reflection.
I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day, perhaps tempting you to rejoin us on Saturday 31 May for seven great races and tribute star, Taylored Swift.

A WINTER’S TALE:
WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?
NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES CHAMPAGNE LAWNS
Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get a summer shower. For the October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table
MR MOWITALL
Joining the grounds team over winter were a couple of robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself.
THE TEAM NEVER REST
Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 6,000 pints of paint have been used by the team this winter and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!).
A LIVING FLOWER WALL
OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND
The flowers are petunia and petchoa, grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.
THE
BARS HAVE IT
Over the Winter a number of bars have been given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Prosecco Bar next door The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie
NEW ON THE MENU
Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering.
If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes.
Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza freshly baked at the Moët Roof Terrace.

We also have a quiet room located within the Houghton Building for use by racegoers. Our Chaplaincy Team are ready to assist racegoers of all faiths and none. If you need a friendly ear, please say hello to them. They can find a quiet spot for a chat.

A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse, it will operate whilst there are enough customers to make a bus viable, after the last race and after the concert. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.
TAXI/PRIVATE HIRE PICK-UP POINT
There is a taxi pick up point at the Northern end of the racecourse adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at the Northern End. Pick up by UBER is from a dedicated area in Car Park A only.
WHERE CAN I PLACE A BET
The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta.
The William Hill Betting Shops (Bustardthorpe End, Knavesmire Stand ground floor and front of Melrose Stand) offer a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.
BAR CLOSING TIMES
Key bars will remain open up to 90 minutes after the last race. The serving of drinks in hospitality areas, will be as specified in your booking details. Have an enjoyable time with us but please respect our neighbours and the wider city as you leave the racecourse.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale.
Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai is proud to be supporting two Group 2 features - the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes – races which continue to form an integral part of our partnership with York Racecourse and our wider international sponsorship portfolio.
This year we have extended our support to include title sponsorship of the new Al Basti Equiworld , Dubai Summer Saturday on 28th June which combines exciting Group 3 action on the track with post-racing entertainment to match, ahead of our return in August for the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes in August.
Congratulations are due to York Racecourse Chairman, Bridget Guerin, and the York Racecourse Committee for their continued commitment to continually improving the quality of racing on the Knavesmire and ever increasing prize money which I am sure will prove to be a compelling proposition for owners and trainers throughout the season.
I wish them and all those involved with staging of today’s meeting horses a pleasant and successful day.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

YESTERDAYS RACING CTION
THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI MIDDLETON STAKES (GROUP 2)
See The Fire produced an impervious performance to land the first Group race on day two.
After sustained market support before the off, it was the Andrew Balding filly who came there cantering to take the prize back to Kingsclere
Judging by the way the race panned out, they must have set stern fractions throughout, with Doha cutting out the early running under Hector Crouch.
She was chased in second by Karmology, who was first to challenge for Karl Burke but ultimately those at the front faded after their early exertions.
Oisin Murphy opted to anchor his mount at the back of the field, choosing to take no part in the ferocious early pace.
Coming down the home straight, the eye was drawn to the daughter of Sea The Stars, who looked as though she had just jumped into the race at the two furlong pole. She breezed past her rivals one by one to move into the lead with a furlong left to race.
One shake of the reigns by Oisin saw her put multiple lengths between herself and the chasing pack, who were only ever playing for the minor placings.
The supplemented Beautiful Love would eventually get the better of Royal Dress but this race was only ever about the mightily impressive, See The Fire, who won by an eventual 12 lengths. Making her one of the most emphatic winners of the Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes.
THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI DANTE STAKES (GROUP 2)
Pride Of Arras defied any talk of inexperience when showing an electric turn of foot to win our feature event.
Favourite and Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb winner The Lion In Winter showed plenty of greenness in the early stages and was one of a few to give their respective jockeys a hard time in the first few furlongs of the race.
The order remained unchanged for much of the contest, with Rossa Ryan opting to take the shortest way round, hugging the inside rail on the eventual winner.
Devil’s Advocate was still leading under Benoit De La Sayette at the four furlong pole but he was soon flanked on either side by a whole host of challengers, with none going better than Pride Of Arras for Ralph Beckett, who was smuggled into contention down the home straight.
Once asked the question, the son of New Bay showed a sparkling turn of foot to put three lengths between himself and the field.
Damysus came with a thundering run down the outside under Kieran Shoemark but ultimately ran out of time to reel in the very impressive winner, Pride Of Arras.
Immediately after the race he moved into third favourite for the Betfred Epsom Derby, earning himself a quote of 4/1 with our sponsors Sky Bet.

It is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, being the development tier of the four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. All start off the same weight as all are seeking that first win.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
A whole host of potential improvers with bright futures ahead of them, but the vote goes to LOVE OLIVIA. Karl Burke’s filly made light work of her opposition on her introduction at Wolverhampton last month and she is clearly held in high regard at Spigot Lodge. The biggest threat may emerge from Harry’s Girl, who displayed a willing attitude to score at Newmarket. Fellow debut winners Eternal Solace and Awraad add further spice to the mix.

CHARLIE YORK
EXPLORE IT TODAY
Bustardthorpe End Development
Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the most recent focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.
Today you can see a multi-million pound project that improves this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers, it was opened in last August by HM The Queen and is now ready for you to enjoy. We’d value your feedback, as with any new development it should come on for the run.
The Roberto Pavilion provides a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar. As well as, tote & William Hill outlets.
The Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy should be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar & dedicated Guinness Bar that flank it. Enjoy the sounds of The Monotones before, during and after the sporting action.
A state of the art William Hill betting shop completes the development, as well a new block of toilets.
In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples. We are proud that has already picked up an award for environmental sustainability, at the Racecourse Association Showcase.
THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:
• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings.
• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar.
• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.
• Two new racegoer lawns with the overaching Churchill Tyres canopy, similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.
• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.
• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.
• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.
We hope you enjoy it.

This is the first handicap of the afternoon. Such races are designed for close competition, so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best will be the highest rated horses, Thunder Run here, so he will carry top weight.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Having signed off his last campaign with a triumph at Sandown, Flying Frontier likely has more to offer this year However, the lack of a recent run and 2lb nudge up the ratings does demand more from James Tate’s charge and TONY MONTANA ticks more of the right boxes. The son of Kingman arrives on the back of a good second at Goodwood and a 2lb higher mark looks workable on this second outing of the season. Have Secret and Austrian Theory are others to consider

Epona: A Green Knavesmire 300 Sculpture
Freddie McAlpine-Riddell is a wildlife sculptor, originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne He creates figurative artwork to showcase the natural beauty of the thoroughbred in a very environmentally sustainable way; he uses discarded tools and machinery. In further tribute, the components used are not altered to fit specific shapes but maintaining their natural and true form.
Freddie hopes to inspire others and encourage creative ways to re-purpose debris, in turn minimising and re-imagining waste and how we interact with it.
You can see the largest of his creations, Epona, standing by the Stewards Head- On Box near the Parade Ring.
Named after the Celtic goddess of horses, she is life-size, standing at a height of 18.1 hands.

Unbeaten duo Glittering Surf and Kon Tiki share similar profiles stepping up in class and neither can be dismissed in an open affair However, there is a sneaking suspicion that we’ve yet to see GULYA fulfil her potential and she could be worth chancing. Roger Varian’s filly endured a luckless passage when denied by a short head at Ascot last month and, granted better luck, compensation could be on the cards.

NOT A FINAL TOTAL… SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRIES WHEN IS A T TAL PRIZE FUND
The Total Prize Fund is the total amount of money that the horses in a race are competing for and to be split between the winner and the placed horses.
The split of prize money between the podium horses and then between the owner, trainer, jockeys and stable is subject to a fairly complicated formula However in outline the winning owner receives 441/2%, trainer 51/2%, jockey 4% and stable 21/2%. You can see further details of the split between horses on the page called “Race Conditions” near the back of this racecard.
The prize money on offer at the Dante Festival is set to attract the very best horses this week. It is funded from several sources; the racecourse itself, the sponsors, the levy board and the entry fees paid by the owners –sometimes referred to as the “Stake” hence the term “Stakes”.
For the major races there are a series of entry dates whereby connections will decide to enter the race and then whether to stay in the race as the performance of the horse and plans for it unfold.
For most Group races, the horses would usually be entered with quite a while to go before the raceday, for example the Boodles Yorkshire Cup closed for original entries on April 1st. However, there is a late “supplementary entry” stage six days before the race. This is designed to allow a horse that may be a late developer or whose plans have changed to take their chance. The supplementary entry fee is set at a higher level than the normal entry route so it takes a bold move by the owners.
If you think about it terms of playing poker, the connections of a late entrant have a better idea of their opposition so pay a premium.
In a real example, to explain the numbers today, the total prize fund for the Boodles Yorkshire Cup has risen because of a Supplementary Entry for Rebel’s Romance, who will carry the Godolphin blue.
After the original closing date, the horse ran well in Dubai on World Cup night, encouraging a bid for today’s prize. The breakdown of the new prize pots can be seen below.

WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN?
Distance
One mile, five furlongs abt 188yds (2,770 metres)
Prize money
£180,000 *before supplementary entry
It had been intended to launch a new two mile handicap in 1926, but racing was cancelled because of the General Strike and so it began 12 months later. After the war it became a Conditions race and in 1966 the distance was reduced to one mile and six furlongs. In 1971 it achieved Group 2 status.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
The Boodles Yorkshire Cup is the first of the major stayers’ Cup events, what you might term the “Grand Slam”. It pits the established stars against the young pretenders.
In this case anyway, as Ardross, winner in 1981 and 1982, was the first thoroughbred to claim two Boodles Yorkshire Cups.
Stradivarius, made history and became only the second back-to-back winner of the race in 2018 and 2019 going one step beyond with his third victory in 2022. Giavellotto followed up his win in 2023 with another, both in fine style for Marco Botti, he joined the elite double winners club
A POT OF GOLD? NOT SO FAST
Incredibly, given Irish success in almost every sphere of modern horse racing, this race has always eluded raiders from the Emerald Isle Southern France pushed Stradivarius all the way in 2019, but apart from that, their best effort in the last decade was from the then Thomas Carmody-trained Royal Diamond who finished third to Glen’s Diamond in 2013. This year Ireland arrives with another contender, can Continuous provide an Irish winner for the roll of honour

LEADING TRAINERS?
The legendary Cecil Boyd-Rochfort bagged seven victories in a career that spanned four decades – The Scout II (1931), Kingstone (1945), Premonition (1954), Dickens (1960), Sagacity (1962), Raise You Ten (1964), and Apprentice (1965). Saeed bin Suroor and Sir Michael Stoute both have trained five winners, after the latter’s retirement it falls to Clarehaven stables, operated by John & Thady Gosden. The pair have three successes in the race thanks to the great Stradivarius and today it falls to Sweet William to fly their Clarehaven flag.
LEADING RIDER?
The late Lester Piggott has eight wins - Pandofell (1961), Aunt Edith (1966), Knockroe (1972), Bruni (1976), Bright Finish (1977), Noble Saint (1980) and Ardross (1981, 1982). Frankie Dettori gave a good account with six winners – Arzanni (1991), Kayf Tara (2000), Marienbard (2001), Mamool (2003) & Stradivarius (2018, 2019 & 2022). Of the current crop Ryan Moore could add a fourth win to his name should Continuous come home the winner
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Plenty of local winners down the years with both the Peacock and Elsey families making their mark. Middleham-based Harry Peacock and his son Dick both saddled a winner, as did the legendary Malton trainer Captain Charles Elsey, followed later by his son Bill. In more modern times Zindabad landed the spoils for Middleham trainer Mark Johnston in 2002 as did Glen’s Diamond for 3000 man, Richard Fahey in 2013, whilst Clever Cookie kept the Yorkshire end up with victory for Peter Niven.
But there could not be a more local winner than Templestow who took the very first running in 1927, for he carried the colours of Colonel Hugh Stobart, a former Steward at York who lived at nearby Middlethorpe Hall, now a popular resting place for owners and racegoers alike.
Epic Poet is the sole representative of the North for David O’Meara.

INTRODUCTION
The Boodles Yorkshire Cup is widely recognised as the first major stayers’ race of the season.
TRAINERS
The victory of Stradivarius back in 2022 gave his trainers John & Thady Gosden a third win in the race but with the retirement of the star-stayer, they will instead look to Sweet William to fly the flag.
RECENT FORM
Two of the last twelve winners won on their previous run before the Boodles Yorkshire Cup, with six of those twelve winners having had their last run over 202 days ago. Last year’s winner Giavellotto had been beaten on his only start prior to winning last year, so it doesn’t necessarily pay to have had a good previous run. Don’t be afraid to back something running for the first time that season.
OFFICIAL RATING
In terms of official ratings, the benchmark for winners appears to be 111. No horse has obliged with a rating lower than that in the last decade, so it seems best to focus our attention on the higher-rated horses. Only Alsakib and Epic Poet have an official rating of below 111.
BETTING
With an average winning SP of just under 5/1 and a record of five winning favourites, it is fair to say that the market has proved an excellent guide in the recent years. Glen’s Diamond caused a shock in 2013 when winning at 25/1 and 2023 winner Giavellotto returned an SP of 14/1 but was sent off 7/2 when winning last year. It has proved more profitable to follow those at a shorter price.

Oppose those yet to win a Group race
Oppose runners officially rated less than 111
CONCLUSION
A good looking renewal of the Boodles Yorkshire Cup is made even better by the presence of Continuous for Aidan O’Brien. Ballydoyle’s 112 rated stayer has been beaten in Saudi Arabia and then again in Dubai but the stats suggest that wouldn’t be a complete negative. Rebel’s Romance is clear by 6lb on official ratings and arrives here with obvious claims He isn’t however tested over this tip, which would be a slight negative. The 117 rated SWEET WILLIAM looks to be the one to be with on this occasion. He’s the winner of multiple Group races, is right at the front of the betting and Clarehaven have a fantastic record in this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Age: 4+
Stalls: Inside Rail
Also part of the Pattern race pyramid is the Group 2 Boodles Yorkshire Cup.
The race is over the comparatively long distance for a flat race of a mile and three quarters. Like long distance human athletes, the stamina required to win tends to develop with age so this race is for horses aged four and older
Identifying a successful stayer could make for a profitable summer, so maybe visit the paddock to get a closer look before making your selection and then watch all the field closely

KNAVESMIRE TIP
The globetrotting Rebel’s Romance has only tasted defeat once on these shores - in last year’s King George - and he ought to go very close if seeing out the trip With stamina proven, though, SWEET WILLIAM is taken to come out on top. Last seen chasing home outstanding stayer Kyprios in the Long Distance Cup at Ascot on Champions Day, the Gosdens’ gelding can pick up where he left off to set up a tilt at the Gold Cup Continuous is a class act on his day and first-time blinkers could give him an added boost.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 5f
Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 71-90
Prize Money: £27,500
Age: 3
Stalls: Farside
This handicap presents another tricky challenge for the betting public, to offer a chance to still developing horses against their own age group it is 3yo only, rated 0-90, going the shortest distance in UK racing, just five furlongs. Top weight is carried by King of Bears.
If an apprentice jockey partners a horse they can claim a reduction in weight (called a claim) to balance their relative lack of experience, see how Warren Fentiman earns some relief for Boyne Lady by claiming 5lbs.
Needing some help, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see how Challet has both won over course and distance.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
This is fiercely competitive and only a tentative vote can go to AGAINST THE WIND Fifth in a valuable sales race here as a juvenile, it didn’t work out in the Harry Rosebery at Ayr next time, but he returned with a convincing handicap triumph at Thirsk last month. Now 6lb higher but well drawn, there is plenty in his favour and he can go close. Mearall appears to be on a competitive mark so must be of interest along with The Quiet Gent, who might appreciate dropping to the minimum trip Loom is also noted.

The next is a novice race, created by Darley and the EBF to provide a valuable opportunity for horses that are still learning their trade, perhaps having missed a lengthy spell through an injury Though they are aged 3 and over, they can only have run a maximum of two times! Perhaps remarkably both Bowmark and Point Of Contact finished first in one of them, so they carry extra weight. Recognising the physical differences at this stage of their careers, the two fillies get a little help, see how Marsh Meadow has a lighter burden.
Perhaps listen to the experts on the Punter’s Panel at 1.20pm for some suggestions or, again, someone else to blame

KNAVESMIRE TIP
John and Thady Gosden can complete a hat-trick of wins in this race with BOWMARK. Impressive at Kempton on debut, the son of Kingman sets a good standard after a neck defeat to a progressive rival in a Listed race at Newcastle He should be very hard to beat back in novice company. Point Of Contact, who had a luckless Crown Of Oaks back in third at Newbury, is feared most, although nicely-bred filly Sea The Wonder, is a must for a betting check.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 7f Race Type:
Prize Money: £25,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Far Side
We end the Dante Festival with a final handicap.“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 85 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar
If judgement of form has failed you so far today, it might be time to resort to a spread bet or just try your favourite colours; it has been known to pay a dividend in such races.
Good luck, we hope you can go into the weekend ahead of the bookies!

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Only one of the last 10 favourite has emerged successful in this race and, with a maximum field of 22 competing, this year’s edition is naturally competitive. Feel The Need won this off 4lb lower in 2024 and is respected with his repeat bid, while cases can obviously be made for penalised runners Eldrickjones and Delicacy based on recent from. However, it could be worth taking a chance on AL MUQDAD, who is a specialist over this trip and has proven to be effective from his current mark. From opposite sides of the draw, Yaaser and Sword are just two others with solid credentials.

Dress Standards
Most racegoers like to make racing at York a special occasion and choose to dress accordingly. Gentlemen (and those identifying as such) in the County Stand are required to wear a jacket, collared shirt and tie. It has always been the case that shorts and t-shirts have been welcome in Grandstand and Paddock. All racegoers are reminded that the removal of shirts is not encouraged and that basic decency and not causing offence to fellow racegoers by clothing choices, is required. York Racecourse reserves the right to refuse or, to require anyone to leave who does not observe the above code.
Drugs
A zero tolerance policy on drug abuse is in force, be warned, North Yorkshire Police and our own team are watching with some canine help, sniffing.
Litter
Racegoers are requested to place all litter in the receptacles provided. If you do not need your racecard please place it in a bin as you leave the racecourse.
Noise
So that the horses have the best chance to perform and so your fellow racegoers have the opportunity to enjoy them please do not cause any distractions; the waving of flags or banners, use of radios or making of sudden noises are examples of things to avoid. Racegoers are reminded of Public Health England advice that shouting increases the risk of the spread of diseases, so to consider wearing your face covering when part of a cheering crowd.

For safety reasons children under the age of twelve are not permitted into the Parade Ring or Unsaddling Enclosure.
