The Boodles Yorkshire Cup

A very warm welcome to Boodles Yorkshire Cup day at York Racecourse, the ﬁnal day of the Dante Festival 2026 – we hope you have a fantastic afternoon and even manage to ﬁnd some winners.

Over the winter, we are all honoured and proud to have collected a Triple Crown of awards for our 2025 season, being ranked number one by all of the AA for the racegoer experience, Owners through the ROA survey and Stable Staﬀ after their national association audit. Thank you for your support last year, we are striving to keep improving your experience again in 2026.

York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport, so attracting the best horses to the Knavesmire, for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival is more than £1.6m as part of the £12.5m across the season. This week, every race will be run for at least £30,000 – so rewarding a wide set of connections. Let’s hope we see a similar quality of runners to last year when some nineteen champions at Group One level graced the Knavesmire.

As the picture for Epsom and other European Classics perhaps has become clearer after Legacy Link won the Tattersalls Musidora and Item The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante; attention today switches to the stayers. With a record of near £500,000 in prize money on offer for today’s card, we are set to see some wonderful horses, notably in the Group 2 Boodles Yorkshire Cup. The first of the staying tests of the season, it often pits an established star of the division such as the now seven-year-old Epic Poet against a new contender, perhaps Tarriance aged just four will fit that bill. Whether it is last year’s second placed horse for David O’Meara or last year’s victor in the Sky Bet Melrose for Andrew Balding in the Juddmonte silks, it promises to be a great contest.

Where our feature race tracks to the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, the Design Tonic Out of the World Spaces at the Races EBF Marygate is a proving ground for contenders in the Queen Mary at the Royal Meeting, perhaps Lady Blanche in the blue of Godolphin will give Yorkshire trainer Karl Burke such a contender

What’s more, a race only in its fourth season, a novice aﬀair backed by both Darley and the EBF could well highlight a rising star.

Racing Welfare are leading the sport through Mental Health Awareness Week, they are a charity close to the sport that we are proud to support through the year. On Tuesday evening we hosted the fantastic Jessica Bethell Ball, a fundraising event for Meningitis Now and the Hunt Family Foundation. This afternoon, Bereaved Children Support will be presented with a cheque for £1,000 as one of our three Local Community Partners; the other two are Clifton Green Primary School and Friends of Rowntree Park.

Given the nature of any WiFi network there will be peaks of demand by both time and location - some websites will not be available.

A shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse, it will operate whilst there are enough customers to make a bus viable, from after the last race. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.

TAXI/PRIVATE HIRE PICK-UP POINT

There is a hackney carriage/licensed taxi pick up point at the designated point at the Northern End of the racecourse integrated into Car Park D, adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at designated points in both Car Park A (north) and Car Park C (south). Pick up by UBER is from a dedicated area in Car Park A & C only.

WHERE CAN I PLACE A BET

The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta.

The William Hill Betting Shops (Bustardthorpe End, Knavesmire Stand ground ﬂoor and front of Melrose Stand) oﬀer a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were conﬁrmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

ESSENTIAL RACING PHRASES FOR THE BEGINNER

It could be easy to be put off by the weird and wonderful words and phrases banded around the racecourse, but in fact, its all part of the fun.

Like a tourist in a foreign country, the novice racegoer soon picks up enough of the language to get by, and then rapidly becomes ﬂuent. The following terms will provide any newcomer, keen to enhance their language skills, with just enough of the jargon to sound like a ‘local’: RACING SPEAK ENGLISH

ALLOWANCE: The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience.

AMATEUR: .............................(Rider) on racecards, their names are usually preﬁxed by Mr, Mrs, etc. To indicate their amateur licence holder status.

ANTE-POST:

APPRENTICE:........................

Betting (usually for the most important races) days or even months before the race is due to take place.

Young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while they are learning.

BACKWARD: .........................Young horse which needs time to mature.

The ﬁrst thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also oﬀer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. We are now registered with the Access Card (nimbus) scheme which helps with advance booking.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.

THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI MIDDLETON STAKES (GROUP 2)

A star studded renewal of the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton once again went the way of See Of Fire, after another convincing performance. After sustained market support before the oﬀ, it was the Andrew Balding ﬁlly who came there cantering to take the prize back to Kingsclere

Five time Group One winner Fallen Angel took them along in the early stages under James Doyle, tracked in second by eventual winner See The Fire.

William Buick opted to challenge on the farside of Fallen Angel, who ran out of steam inside the ﬁnal two furlongs. The defending champion challenged on the opposite side and was stalked all the way by Colin Keane aboard the outsider of the quartet Red Letter.

He looked to be travelling marginally better on the Juddmonte ﬁlly but See The Fire had saved plenty for the ﬁnal dash for the line and once asked the question by Oisin Murphy, she pulled away readily.

Ger Lyons ﬁlly didn’t have the gears to go with her but did stay on well to claim second from Diamond Rain, who completed the podium.

In winning, she became the ﬁrst horse in the race’s history to appear twice on the roll of honour and will now no doubt look to Royal Ascot in search of another Group One success.

THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD,

DUBAI DANTE STAKES (GROUP 2)

Item followed in the footsteps of yesterday’s Tattersalls Musidora winner Legacy Link for Juddmonte, in what was an extremely impressive performance.

The Aidan O’Brien pair broke smartly, with Action taking them along at a modest pace under Wayne Lordan.

Ryan Moore was content to sit on the outside of Al Zanati for the early part of the race, with the order of those in behind remaining unchanged for the ﬁrst seven furlongs of the contest.

Morshidi and Wise Prince took a keen hold under their respective jockeys, perhaps not beneﬁting from the sedate early gallop.

Turning for home Wayne Lordan slowly began to up the tempo from the front and looked to have most of his rivals in trouble at the two furlong pole

Christmas Day was unable to land a blow down the nearside and instead the challenge came from Item and Colin Keane

He set oﬀ in pursuit of the leader, who continued to battle on gamely for the Emerald Isle but ultimately he was unable to hold the eﬀort of Item, as the Andrew Balding stretched clear to win.

He was cut into 6/1 for the Epsom Derby, where he will hope to emulate Desert Crown, who was the most recent of eleven horses to have done the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante, Epsom Derby double.

Our second Listed race is over the shortest trip in UK racing, ﬁve furlongs. It is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, being the development tier of the four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. All start off the same weight as all are seeking that ﬁrst win.

This race is for those that are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that the horses sire is registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe

It would be no surprise to see her in the mix once again, but marginal preference is for PRINCESSE D’ORANGE. The daughter of Ardad created a big impression when scoring on her racecourse bow at Beverley a month ago and that form suggests that she could be well above average Armor Supreme should not be underestimated following her Goodwood win, while Love A Giggle and Lady Blanche are also noted.

WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN?

It had been intended to launch a new two mile handicap, a century ago in 1926, but racing was cancelled because of the General Strike and so it began 12 months later. After the war it became a Conditions race and in 1966 the distance was reduced to one mile and six furlongs. In 1971 it achieved Group 2 status.

WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

The Boodles Yorkshire Cup is the ﬁrst of the major stayers’ Cup events, what you might term the “Grand Slam”. It pits the established stars against the young pretenders.

In this case anyway, as Ardross, winner in 1981 and 1982, was the ﬁrst thoroughbred to claim two Boodles Yorkshire Cups.

Stradivarius, made history and became only the second back-to-back winner of the race in 2018 and 2019 going one step beyond with his third victory in 2022. Giavellotto followed up his win in 2023 with another, both in ﬁne style for Marco Botti, he joined the elite double winners club

A POT OF GOLD? NOT SO FAST

Incredibly, given Irish success in almost every sphere of modern horse racing, this race has always eluded raiders from the Emerald Isle Southern France pushed Stradivarius all the way in 2019, but apart from that, their best eﬀort in the last decade was from the then Thomas Carmody-trained Royal Diamond who ﬁnished third to Glen’s Diamond in 2013. This year the Emerald isle has no representative.

LEADING TRAINERS?

The legendary Cecil Boyd-Rochfort bagged seven victories in a career that spanned four decades – The Scout II (1931), Kingstone (1945), Premonition (1954), Dickens (1960), Sagacity (1962), Raise You Ten (1964), and Apprentice (1965). Saeed bin Suroor and Sir Michael Stoute both have trained ﬁve winners, after the latter’s retirement it falls to Clarehaven stables, operated by John & Thady Gosden. The pair have three successes in the race thanks to the great Stradivarius but today are not represented.

LEADING RIDER?

The late Lester Piggott has eight wins - Pandofell (1961), Aunt Edith (1966), Knockroe (1972), Bruni (1976), Bright Finish (1977), Noble Saint (1980) and Ardross (1981, 1982). Frankie Dettori gave a good account with six winners – Arzanni (1991), Kayf Tara (2000), Marienbard (2001), Mamool (2003) & Stradivarius (2018, 2019 & 2022). Of the current crop William Buick could add a fourth win to his name should Furthur come home the winner

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Plenty of local winners down the years with both the Peacock and Elsey families making their mark. Middleham-based Harry Peacock and his son Dick both saddled a winner, as did the legendary Malton trainer Captain Charles Elsey, followed later by his son Bill. Since the millennium, Zindabad landed the spoils for Middleham trainer Mark Johnston in 2002 as did Glen’s Diamond for 3000 man, Richard Fahey in 2013, whilst Clever Cookie kept the Yorkshire end up with victory for Peter Niven.

But there could not be a more local winner than Templestow who took the very first running in 1927, for he carried the colours of Colonel Hugh Stobart, a former Steward at York who lived at nearby Middlethorpe Hall, now a popular resting place for owners and racegoers alike. Jessica Bedi would land her highest profile prize were Diera Mile to oblige; David O’Meara is perhaps more familiar with the York Winner’s Enclosure and would get another visit if Epic Poet came home in first place.

INTRODUCTION

The Boodles Yorkshire Cup is widely recognised as the ﬁrst major stayers’ race of the season.

TRAINERS

The victory of Stradivarius back in 2022 gave his trainers John & Thady Gosden a third win in the race. They are not represented today however. Of today’s hopefuls, only Andrew Balding has recorded a victory, he saddles Tarriance and Furthur.

RECENT FORM

Two of the last thirteen winners won on their previous run before the Boodles Yorkshire Cup, with six of those thirteen winners having had their last run over 202 days ago. Last year’s winner Rebel’s Romance had been beaten on his last start prior to winning last year, so it doesn’t necessarily pay to have had a good previous run. Don’t be afraid to back something running for the ﬁrst time that season.

OFFICIAL RATING

In terms of official ratings, the benchmark for winners appears to be 111. No horse has obliged with a rating lower than that in the last decade, so it seems best to focus our attention on the higher-rated horses. Only Tarriance, Deira Mile and Epic Poet have an official rating of below 111.

BETTING

With an average winning SP of around 3/1 and a record of five winning favourites, it is fair to say that the market has proved an excellent guide in the recent years. Glen’s Diamond caused a shock in 2013 when winning at 25/1 and 2023 winner Giavellotto returned an SP of 14/1 but was sent off 7/2 when winning in 2024. It has proved more profitable to follow those at a shorter price.

CONCLUSION

A good looking renewal of the Boodles Yorkshire Cup is made even better by the presence of AMILOC for Ralph Beckett. His 116 rated stayer hasn’t been seen yet this year but that wouldn’t necessarily be a negative. He’s already a Group Two winner and is currently favourite for the race, so should take all the beating. Epic Poet ﬁnished second in last year’s renewal and has already had three starts this campaign. The signs are there for another big run but he does fall beneath that all important official rating. Rahiebb is the second highest rated in the ﬁeld but unlike Amiloc, he has yet to win a Group race, so the preference remains with Ralph Beckett’s charge.

Amiloc arguably improved on his King Edward VII victory with high-class efforts in defeat in the Irish St Leger and Breeders’ Cup Turf to end his three-year-old campaign. However, marginal preference on this occasion is for RAHIEBB, who was only beaten a neck into second in the St Leger at Doncaster when last seen in September. The son of Frankel could make a big impression in these types of races this season. On the pick of his form from last year, Furthur is another who could go well.

An A-Z of information for racegoers

Abandoned Racing

In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on badges and tickets purchased will only be paid in the following circumstances.

a) before the ﬁrst race - 100% refund.

b) before the completion of three races.

c) thereafter - no refund applies. Refunds cannot be made on racedays. To obtain a refund, racegoers who purchased their admission on the day should send the ticket they were given on entrance with their full name and address to: York Racecourse, York, YO23 1EX within 30 days. Racegoers who booked in advance direct with the track and so paid by card will receive an automatic refund. A similar process will apply for those who paid in advance by cheque. Alcohol And Public Order

The Racecourse takes its responsibilities under Licensing Laws very seriously and puts in place training and measures to exceed these obligations. Racegoers are urged to drink responsibly. Alcohol cannot be brought into the stands side enclosures. York Racecourse reserves the right to expel any person found to be drunk or behaving in a disorderly manner.

The “Challenge 25” initiative will be in operation to ensure that only those aged 18 and over are served with alcohol. Thank you for your support of this obligation.

Cameras

Please feel free to take a souvenir photo of your day. However we would remind you that the preparation and performance of the sport must be ensured, so please note:-

1. Kindly refrain from ﬂash photography.

2. Avoid taking photos in restricted areas used by the sporting professionals i.e. Saddling Boxes, Stables, Unsaddling Boxes & Weighing Room.

3. Respect the privacy of others.

Cigarettes and e-cigarettes

The current smoking legislation regarding smoking in public places applies at the racecourse. The use of e-cigarettes is permitted, however they will be treated the same as tobacco products.

Common Courtesy/Entry Conditions

All persons visiting York Racecourse are admitted subject to Racecourse Regulations and the Rules of Racing. The Racecourse reserves the right to refuse admission or remove from the racecourse any person refusing to comply with the Rules and Regulations or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others. Dogs

Racegoers are requested to leave their pets including all dogs at home. Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome.

HBLB

The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry

First Aid

There are ﬁrst aid posts in the Edwardian Weighing Room, other such buildings have been designated as isolation rooms, should they be required.

Dress Standards

Most racegoers like to make racing at York a special occasion and choose to dress accordingly. Gentlemen (and those identifying as such) in the County Stand are required to wear a collared shirt and tie. It has always been the case that shorts and t-shirts have been welcome in Grandstand and Paddock. All racegoers are reminded that the removal of shirts is not encouraged and that basic decency and not causing oﬀence to fellow racegoers by clothing choices, is required. York Racecourse reserves the right to refuse or, to require anyone to leave who does not observe the above code.

Drugs

A zero tolerance policy on drug abuse is in force, be warned, North Yorkshire Police and our own team are watching with some canine help, sniffing.

Litter

Racegoers are requested to place all litter in the receptacles provided. If you do not need your racecard please place it in a bin as you leave the racecourse.

Noise

So that the horses have the best chance to perform and so your fellow racegoers have the opportunity to enjoy them please do not cause any distractions; the waving of ﬂags or banners, use of radios or making of sudden noises are examples of things to avoid. Racegoers are reminded of Public Health England advice that shouting increases the risk of the spread of diseases, so to consider wearing your face covering when part of a cheering crowd.

Parade Ring

For safety reasons children under the age of twelve are not permitted into the Parade Ring or Unsaddling Enclosure.

Photo Finishes And Stewards’ Enquiries/Objections

In any race where Photo Finish has been called by the Judge, this information will be displayed on the Giant Screen. An announcement will also be broadcast. Race Results and Photographs will also be displayed on the York Racecourse television monitors.

Radios and Mobile Telephones

The use of all types of communication equipment is strictly controlled at all racecourses. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc., for any purpose at the racecourse.

Track Safety

For your own safety and the welfare of the horses, jockeys and stable staﬀ please keep oﬀ the track.

Anyone trespassing on the track: Will be liable to arrest and prosecution Will be ejected immediately Will be banned from all future York race meetings May face a nationwide racecourse ban.
