York Racecard - Friday 13th June

Page 1

A very warm welcome to York Racecourse for our mid-summer raceday – where would you rather be on a glorious Friday afternoon in June?

We have a fascinating racecard to enjoy which offers a record prize fund of £235,000, with the Seat Unique Stakes over a mile and a quarter as the £70,000 feature race Seat Unique are a valued partner, powering the hospitality elements of our website yorkracecourse.co.uk, so we are delighted to see them return to York. There are some familiar names amongst the field, with nine previous winners over the distance, four previous winners at York and Sir Busker and Ron O having done both. Expect to see the strong performers return for a tilt at the 66th John Smith’s Cup on Saturday 12 July; get your ante post bet on today at the on-course William Hill shops.

Before the sporting action today, we will pay tribute to Peter Easterby who passed away last weekend, a legend of the game and a true friend to York. Our thoughts are with Tim, Sarah, Emily William and Thomas, as well as the wider family and friends of a man who was so proud of his home county.

The excitement continues in the Winner’s Enclosure after our second race, as the successful horse in a unique contest in York’s calendar - the Coopers Marquees Rous Seller – comes under the hammer of George Stanners, our Goffs UK auctioneer Enjoy the spectacle but be mindful that a poorly timed scratch of the nose could see you returning home with a new four-legged friend!

A recent addition to our calendar is the valuable £30,000 Novice Fillies race at 3.35pm; the investment by Juddmonte into this series of races is most welcome to help develop the future stars.

We are proud to be working with the British European Breeders’ Fund in staging the 3pm race, a valuable contest for fillies over six furlongs, as both York Racecourse and the British EBF are committed advocates of Racing with Pride York Racecourse is determined to ensure racing on the Knavesmire is welcoming and inclusive for all – racegoers, visitors and colleagues alike. We welcome supporters of Racing With Pride to York this afternoon who will use the Edwardian Weighing Room as a base for the day.

Arguably at opposite ends of the racing journeys, we also welcome guests of Racing Welfare and the students with Racing To School.

Today’s prize money and the course improvements can only be achieved through your support and that of our sponsors. Many thanks for your attendance and to Seat Unique, Juddmonte, Andy Thornton Hospitality Furniture, Coopers Marquees, Constant Security Services, the European Breeders Fund, and Irish Thoroughbred Marketing (if it is a Friday on the Knavesmire then our friends from The Curragh are in town) for their generous support. Talking of our sponsors, do visit the Champagne Pavilion or Theakstons Bar to sit on some of our Andy Thornton furniture!

It is now twenty years since the Knavesmire played temporary host to Royal Ascot at York (see p46) with the sporting connection still common, so do look out for York winners next week at Royal Ascot, you can see where any of today’s contestants might feature by the following the symbol next to their names in this racecard.

The team have been busy preparing for your return: it is the first June Meeting for the award-winning Bustardthorpe Development (see p10), enjoy the Churchill Tyres Lawn, Theakston or Guinness Bars to wash down some fresh, local Fish and Chips.

I hope that you are able to come racing at York again soon, perhaps even tomorrow to Macmillan Charity Raceday - just by so doing you will help raise money for this incredible cause. Alternatively, you can support a jockey in the Ride of Their Lives or join in the online auction, which is already live, by following the link from our website, (mor on P28), or perhaps try a raffle ticket as it might be yo chance of a winner!

A WINTER’S TALE:

WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?

NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES CHAMPAGNE LAWNS

Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get a summer shower. For the October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table

BUSTARDTHORPE END

SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT

Last August we were honoured when Her Majesty The Queen, our Royal Patron, opened this development to the South of the Knavesmire Stand. Check out the Churchill Tyres lawn & canopy, the Theakston and Guinness bars, as well as food outlets and a WIlliam Hill shop

MR MOWITALL

Joining the grounds team over winter were a couple of robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself

THE TEAM NEVER REST

Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 6,000 pints of paint have been used by the team this winter and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!).

A LIVING FLOWER WALL

OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND

The flowers are petunia and petchoa, grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.

THE

BARS HAVE IT

Over the Winter a number of bars have been given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Prosecco Bar next door The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie

NEW ON THE MENU

Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering.

If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes.

Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza freshly baked at the Moët Roof Terrace.

2. Click T&C’s box then log in

3. You’ll be directed to our home page featuring our partners today, then just surf away

Given the nature of any WiFi network there will be peaks of demand by both time and location - some websites will not be available.

A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse, it will operate whilst there are enough customers to make a bus viable, after the last race and after the concert. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.

TAXI/PRIVATE HIRE PICK-UP POINT

There is a taxi pick up point at the Northern end of the racecourse adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at the Northern End. Pick up by UBER is from a dedicated area in Car Park A only.

WHERE CAN I PLACE A BET

The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta. The William Hill Betting Shops (Bustardthorpe End, Knavesmire Stand ground floor and front of Melrose Stand) offer a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.

BAR CLOSING TIMES

Key bars will remain open up to 7pm. The serving of drinks in hospitality areas will be as specified in your booking details. Have an enjoyable time with us but please respect our neighbours and the wider city as you leave the racecourse.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale.

Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai is proud to be supporting two Group 2 features - the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes – races which continue to form an integral part of our partnership with York Racecourse and our wider international sponsorship portfolio.

This year we have extended our support to include title sponsorship of the new Al Basti Equiworld , Dubai Summer Saturday on 28th June which combines exciting Group 3 action on the track with post-racing entertainment to match, ahead of our return in August for the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes in August.

Congratulations are due to York Racecourse Chairman, Bridget Guerin, and the York Racecourse Committee for their continued commitment to continually improving the quality of racing on the Knavesmire and ever increasing prize money which I am sure will prove to be a compelling proposition for owners and trainers throughout the season.

I wish them and all those involved with staging of today’s meeting horses a pleasant and successful day.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

Andy Thornton Hospitality Furniture 50th Anniversary Apprentice Stakes

About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 7f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 66-85

Prize Money: £25,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Farside

We open with a testing handicap, remember the independent assessor who is the handicapper has given differing weights to these participants with the intention of creating an equally matched contest. Open only to horses aged four-years-old and over and intended for those whose mark is between 66-85 The spotlight falls on the jockeys as this race is limited to apprentice riders. There is a sliding scale as measured by winners; a partnership receives a 7lb benefit if the apprentice has ten of fewer previous winning rides, as would be the case for Shay Farmer aboard Tolstoy. At the other end of the spectrum, Yasser gets no respite having one of the most successful apprentice riders on his back, Aime Waugh.

Maybe visit the Parade Ring to assess the nerves before placing your bet.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

However, QUEST FOR FUN, who is also a previous C&D winner, shades preference as he runs off 10lb lower than his last winning mark. Yaaser, Mereside Diva and Little Empire are other key players in a competitive edition of this apprentice riders’ showpiece.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type:

Prize Money:

Age: 2

Stalls: Centre

A race limited to 2yo horses so in their first season, meaning level weights for runners of the same sex, save for the filly Willowinghurn who has to carry 3lbs extra after success at Redcar last month. Also, notice how Dinamo is one of five runners to carry less, as there is an allowance given to the fillies in the race to recognise their relative strength against the boys, at this stage in their career

This selling stakes aims to showcase horses which are for sale; imagine a car dealer having a race of all the motors available on the forecourt. Immediately after the race the winner is offered for sale by an auction. Bidding is conducted by Bernard Condren of Goffs UK and is to start at the minimum price of £15,000 and any other horse in the race can be claimed for £30,000 If the horse has won particularly well then you may see the original owner trying to buy it back, hopefully for less than the prize money it has just collected!

Blame the press for your betting by seeking advice from the board by the Winner’s Enclosure.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Ollie Pears has a good record in this event and his representative, Carnation Queen (fifth), commands respect with his stable bidding to win this for the third year running. However, U TURN fared the better of the pair when they clashed at Beverley last month and built on that third-placed finish when chasing home an odds-on favourite at Musselburgh last week. Another step forward could suffice today. Redcar winner Willowinghurn and Dinamo are also appealing options.

Racing With Pride was established in 2020 as British racing’s official LGBT+ network, offering a community for people to find support and friendship, as well as influence social change and promote a diverse and inclusive industry.

Pride Month provides an opportunity for people to come together to celebrate how far LGBT+ rights have come whilst recognising there’s still work to be done. It is also about visibly demonstrating acceptance and inclusion, while raising awareness of issues affecting the LGBT+ community. We are delighted to partner with York Racecourse and the European Breeders’ Fund once again in recognition of this important celebration.

Members from our network and the wider LGBT+ community, together with allies, will be on-course today networking and enjoying the afternoon’s racing. For anyone looking to find out more, the Edwardian Weighing Room is the nominated place to find a welcoming face.

Anyone can support Racing With Pride’s ongoing work to show that British horseracing is a sport for everyone. Whether you’re a member of the LGBT+ community or an ally who wants to show their support, we’d love to hear from you.

Restricted Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Novice

Prize Money: £30,000

Age: 2f

Stalls: Centre

In that quest for a competitive race this one is limited to 2-year-old fillies running over 5 furlongs, the shortest distance in British racing. It is a valuable prize for such thoroughbreds and is part of an initiative, backed by Juddmonte, to identify the stars of the future.

All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.

If any had previous success it would add weight at varying amounts depending on the grade of the race won; which explains why Bleep Test who was successful at Redcar is top weight.

Now the fun bit, to add a layer of competition (or for some complexity) a runner’s weight can be lowered (an allowance) based on having been bought comparatively cheaply at a recognised auction, so the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and hence potential.

The most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter Any horse in from a lower Band racing in opposition to one from a higher band benefit from an allowance, so India Love carries a lower weight because a “better” horse such as Stargazed races against her Extend the logic Regal Dream, is from a yet lower Band, so has a further reduction in the lead carried and so on down the bands to Amorist with the lightest burden

All a bit much? Then go for the alternative “P” for “pin” rather than “pedigree”.

Third to a talented sort of Karl Burke’s who is fancied at Royal Ascot next week, SOCA STAR showed up well last time out at Carlisle and this represents an ideal opportunity for the daughter of Starman to get off the mark. A determined winner over further at Redcar last month, Bleep Test is a key player despite a 6lb penalty, while the well-bred Stargazed looks to be the pick of the newcomers for leading connections.

Back to a handicap, this time for horses rated up to 105 (putting a ceiling on the handicap mark further ensures competitive action and a chance for a different pool of horses). The distance of one and a quarter miles means that the runners start on the back straight of the Knavesmire.

So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see how defending champion Ron O is one with the double consonant seal of previous success over course and distance.

A well-bred sort by Lope De Vega, BURRITO always looked to be in control when holding off the reopposing Sovereign Sea (second) at Newbury last month and a 10lb rise may not get to the bottom of this four-year-old’s ability. Denied by the narrowest of margins behind Liberty Coach (first) at Redcar last time out, See That Storm (second) may be able to overturn that form with a 1lb pull at the weights. Faylaq and Chester winner Paddy The Squire are capable of being in the shake-up as well.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

The winning run of LUNA A INBHIR NIS has to come to an end sometime, but a 6lb penalty may not be enough to stop her after she made it three in a row when winning by a length at Musselburgh after a well-timed run. Beaujolais Nouveau goes up 2lb for future races after her Thirsk second and, with Archie Young claiming 5lb, she looks a huge danger, followed by Yarmouth winner Forager from the one stall.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 2f

Race Type:

Age: 4+

Stalls: Inside Rail

To finish off with a handicap race. It is often termed “the get out stakes” and to freshen the available pool, it is open to those who are aged four-years-old and over, it is also over one and a quarter miles.

“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 80 means that though these ones are still quality performers, they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar Highest rated so highest weight this time is Candonomore.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

It’s A Love Thing has been wonderfully consistent with seven top three finishes in a row, including wins at Wolverhampton and Pontefract and a third over hurdles at Aintree She could be the biggest danger to GINCIDENT, a gutsy winner at Lingfield in a first-time tongue-tie last month who races off just 2lb higher for a stable in good form. Molinari is one who could surprise a few if the eight-year-old can be brought back to his best. GINCIDENT IT’S A LOVE THING
