A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire, where the feature race is a fascinating renewal of the Group 3 William Hill Summer Stakes – with the weather forecast to match the race title!
A dozen flying fillies plus a lone mobile mare are declared for this Pattern race now worth a record £100,000. A second-place finish in Group One company at Royal Ascot means Spicy Marg is likely to start as favourite for Owner Emma Banks, after travelling from the Newmarket yard of Michael Bell. Whilst the leading local contender is Royal Fixation, a Group 2 winner at the Ebor Festival last August, hailing from the Spigot Lodge operation of Karl Burke.
This black type race marks the great partnership between York and William Hill which stretches back many years and now celebrates that the Leeds based betting giant plays a key role in the betting experience for York racegoers by operating the on-course betting shops – including the state-of-the-art one that is part of the Bustardthorpe End Development - do go and meet their friendly team.
The record £260,000 prize money today and the course improvements can only be achieved through your support and that of our partners and sponsors. Azets are longstanding supporters of York Racecourse as well as our local accountants and auditors – I hope their team here have a fantastic day. All the members of the Barry family are also most welcome as they celebrate the life of Laura, a talented apprentice rider taken far too soon. Many thanks also to season long partners Irish Thoroughbred Marketing and the British European Breeders’ Fund.
Listen to your choice of live bands before, during and even after racing, maybe try one of Chef Hannah’s patisserie cakes from the ground floor eateries in both of the Ebor and Knavesmire Stands, follow the action from the airconditioned cool of the Dante Suite or stand by the finish to feel as well as hear the thunder of hooves in the final furlong. However you spend your raceday, I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful one
William Derby, Chief Executive

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
RaceiQ Par Times

With thanks to race sponsors, Design Tonic from Leeds, the fourth floor has a bright new look with new carpets, suspended ceilings, improved lighting, bespoke joinery and huge TVS! To find out more hospitality@yorkracecourse.co.uk

It now matches the Champagne Lawns, more importantly it offers more space for large groups of successful Owners. Check out the digital screen in the Douglas Fir backboard. With thanks to Lindum York & The Football Company.

As part of Green Knavesmire 300 we planted two miles of hedge around the eastern boundary including the six & seven furlong starts to improve landscaping and support wildlife. As they grow the blend of hawthorn, hornbeam, hazel, prunus and field maple plants will become more obvious.

The Yorkshire brass & jazz bands can now stay dry, courtesy of this smart base delivered by Duncombe Sawmill from Helmsley.

Across the racecourse, York based company Communicate Technology helped us replace 40 Access Points (think the shower heads that dispense the coverage) and added plenty of new ones. Often moving just twenty yards will improve your signal.

On the first floor of the Ebor Stand, a convenient way to get a pint, perhaps on the way to the Ebor Lawn. The brands it serves will vary by day, expect to see Birra Moretti, Dark Fruits Cider and Guinness over the year

Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai is delighted to have supported two Group 2 features - the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Fillies’Stakes and the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes at the Dante Festival.
We are enormously proud of our longstanding partnership with York Racecourse whose commitment to customer care at all levels is a shining example. I congratulate racecourse Chairman, Bridget Guerin, and her Committee on continuing to deliver racing of the highest quality on the Knavesmire through innovative race programming and ever increasing investment in facilities and prize money.
The Dante Festival marked the first of our three scheduled visits to York this season. We enjoyed returning for the second edition of Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Summer Saturday at the end of June which is rapidly becoming one of the social highlights of the season, ahead of what promises to be another exciting renewal of the Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes in August.
I hope they and you enjoy a pleasant and successful day.

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. We are now registered with the Access Card (nimbus) scheme which helps with advance booking.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

About Seven
(1,400 metres)
See page 77 for conditions of this race.
A competitive handicap, for 4yo+ horses run over seven furlongs.

Distance: 7f
Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 76-95
Prize Money: £30,000
Age: 4+
Stalls: Farside
Such races are designed for close competition, so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best, on past performance, will be the highest rated horse, Northern Express finds himself at the top and so will carry most weight.
If you are looking for help, follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red biplane
Winner: OBELIX
Trainer: Julie Camacho
Jockey: Sam James
Age/Weight: 5-8-10
Runners: 15 Price: 20/1

Obelix benefited from a second wind operation to run on strongly from the rear, eventually coming home with some authority.

Longest Traveller: ANGEL HUNTER trained by R Hannon, Marlborough, 212 miles.
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 8th July
NORTHERN EXPRESS probably isn’t the force of old, but he made a pleasing return to UK shores at Newmarket last month. Michael Dods’ gelding has been a mainstay in this type of race for some time now and a strongly-run 7f is right up his street It’s been a while since he last tasted success, but it did come off 7lb higher and if he is going to regain the winning thread in any scenario, this might be it. The draw has done Our Havana no favours but the recent C&D winner merits respect. Others to make the shortlist include Andesite, Morte Point and Lir Speciale

The William Hill Summer Stakes was first run in 1996 when it was a Listed contest for fillies and mares aged three and above. It was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2003.
Serious Attitude won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes during her juvenile season and after her win here went on to land another Group 1 in Canada.
The 2004 winner Tante Rose was arguably the classiest as she won the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup two months after victory here.
Former champion, Flora Of Bermuda returns after becoming a regular on the podium of Group One sprints, finishing third at both Royal Ascot and Haydock last season.

That honour falls to Ladies Are Forever, owned by the much missed Reg Bond, who recorded a time of 1min 9.18secs in 2011. She also ran the second fastest time of 1min 9.30secs in 2014.
Theann became the first overseas-trained winner when landing the spoils for Aidan O’Brien and Seamie Heffernan in 2007. In 2012 the prize went to Germany when Gracia Directa was partnered to victory by Robert Winston for the Hamburg-based trainer Dominik Moser. That filly will remain the last winner based overseas as all of today’s competitors hail from British yards.

Geoff Oldroyd

Geoff Oldroyd won this race three times in recent years courtesy of his flying filly Ladies Are Forever. Toby Balding managed to win the race twice with Palace Affair in 2001 & 2002 whilst Richard Hannon Snr also won the race twice with Nanoushka in 1998 and Lucky Spin in 2005. Seven of today’s trainers have already saddled a winner of this race Flora Of Bermuda returns to try and regain her 2024 crown for Andrew Balding, while America Queen will attempt to make it back to back winners for Richard Hughes.
Two jockeys’ have won this race more than once. Steven Carson partnered Palace Affair to back-to-back victories. The now retired Paul Hanagan joined him in 2019 when guiding Royal Intervention to victory for Ed Walker Nine years prior he had won the race on Rose Blossom, for the Yorkshire based Richard Fahey. Only Daniel Tudhope has ridden a winner in this one, with that success coming back in 2014, today he rides Fluorescence to try and make it two.
In 2014, Ladies Are Forever achieved the quite remarkable feat of winning this race three times. Interestingly, for each of her three victories in 2011, 2013 & 2014 she was ridden by a different jockey - Silvestre De Sousa, Graham Lee & Danny Tudhope respectively She didn’t take part in 2012!
Founded in 1934, William Hill is one of the most trusted brands in the marketplace, attracting millions of customers from around the world. They now bring that expertise to the Retail betting shops here at York.

Initially not all that well. Tim Easterby won it with Hot Tin Roof in 2000 but we had to wait until 2010 for another Yorkshire-trained winner when Rose Blossom scored for Richard Fahey. Since, then Geoff Oldroyd has boosted the tally thanks to the success of Ladies Are Forever, while Kevin Ryan’s Queen Jo Jo and Karl Burke’s Swingalong continue make sure the White Rose features prominently on the roll of honour Today the task falls to Fluorescence, Catching The Moon, Royal Fixation and Soul Love.

The William Hill Summer Stakes is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3 (like this one), Group 2 and Group 1.
In the search for competition, this race is only open to older fillies and mares. Weight allowances are made for the variation in strength of 3yos; notice how likely favourite Spicy Marg has a benefit over the five-year-old Flora Of Bermuda. A previous win at this level or higher, would have attracted a penalty weight, however today’s field are seeking that first black type triumph.
An in-form stable could be the charm here, see the table at the beginning of this race.

SPICY MARG was a sharp two-year-old and was thought good enough to contest the 1000 Guineas on her return to action. That didn’t go to plan, but she showed more in the Sandy Lane before producing a career-best performance to finish within a head of Venetian Sun in the Commonwealth Cup That is undoubtedly a really strong piece of form and if reproducing it, she will take all the beating. Flora Of Bermuda lost her race at the start in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes but that effort can be forgiven and, although below par on her Newbury return, Royal Fixation should do better now.

Thirty of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in the £1.5m Juddmonte International. Last year’s victor is once again entered to defend his crown for John & Thady Gosden. Ombudsman has already registered two Group One victories this season, including the Dubai Turf at Meydan and more recently the Prince Of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot. France could be well represented with the likes of Caldangan, who was last seen winning the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and last season did lower the colours of Ombudsman in the QIPCO Champion Sakes on Champions Day, he remains entered but may be focused elsewhere. French Derby and Eclipse winner Constitution River would likely be the chief hope of the Emerald Isle for Aidan O’Brien, after he romped home at Sandown, he heads fourteen potential runners from across the Irish Sea. The best British hope apart from the defending champion comes in the form of Opera Ballo for Charlie Appleby. Owned by Godolphin, the son of 2020 winner Ghaiyyath is already a Group One winner this season and currently is around a 10/1 chance.

Fifteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2026 could see that number increase, following Continuous’s success in 2023. Christmas Day looks to be the leading hope after he won the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante en-route to winning the Epsom Derby in truly testing conditions, giving the impression he should have no issues coping with the step up in trip. Enceladus won a competitive looking King George V at Royal Ascot, a race that has thrown up potential St Leger runners in the past. Causeway looks another Ballydoyle runner that is tailor made for the test of stamina that is the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur after his impressive win in the King Edward VII at the Royal meeting.
The last time the race went over to mainland Europe was in 2012, when Shareta scored for Alain de Roger-Dupre, this year Les Bleus could have Sunly, in the colours of powerhouse, Juddmonte. Ballydoyle has had a strong grip on this race in recent years, winning five of the last six renewals. Minne Hauk looks likely to lead the line once more after her victory last year. Aidan O’Brien could also be represented by the unbeaten and three time Group One winning Diamond Necklace, with the only question mark around her credentials, coming in the form of her tackling an unknown trip. In all, there are a sixteen entries from the Emerald Isle, including from Aidan’s son, Joseph who could well saddle this year’s Epsom Oaks winner Thundering On. Kalpana and Estrange provide the chief home team challenge for Andrew Balding and David O’Meara respectively. The latter romped home in the Pretty Polly at the Curragh, lowering the colours of Thundering On in the process.

Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.
Things to do: Be the fastest
Emphatic Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes winner Bacio could bid to become the first two-year-old since Kingsgate Native (2007) to win the Friday feature. If he were to oblige, he would provide redemption for Wesley Ward, who was narrowly beaten with Lady Aurelia back in 2017. King Charles III Stakes winner Mission Central is the pick of the Emerald Isle for Aidan O’Brien. He’ll be hoping to give his trainer a winner in the race for the first time since 2001 Rayveka was only a head behind him in the same race and is the chief hope for France, while Satono Reve gives the race a truly International feel as he represents Japan.

Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar

Ireland could be well represented in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, with impressive winner, Abraham Lincoln, the pick of the entries for Aidan O’Brien. He looked mightily impressive at the Curragh on debut and is open to any amount of improvement. Carry The Flag could well join him after bouncing back from a ninth placed finish in the Norfolk, while Inner City Blues is already a York winner this season and Adaay Of Scarlett was only narrowly beaten in the Coventry in Berkshire.
Things to do: Earn a place in the folklore of the Knavesmire - you’ve got two shots this year!
That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor. The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Jorvik winner Klassleader has only been seen once, if disappointing at Newmarket, since winning in May. Curragh winner Poetic Sound was turned out quickly after winning but looked to not stay upped two an extended two miles. Melrose victor Tarriance looked to be outclassed in the Boodles Yorkshire Cup and a return to handicapping may see him to better effect. Gregory rounds off the quartet after his narrow victory in the Grand Cup Stakes in June. Whoever wins, they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

Following Never So Brave’s victory last year in the now Group One Sky Bet City Of York Stakes all eyes will be on him to see if he can regain his crown. Group One Lockinge winner Notable Speech will be hoping to bounce back from a below par run in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot. With the William Haggas trained pair Lake Forest and More Thunder close behind him in the betting. Gstaad and True Love are two of the potential runners for Aidan O’Brien.
Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

Bear Lee was a cosy winner at Musselburgh and should have more to offer, but she will need improvement if she’s to defy a penalty in what looks a deeper contest. There are a number of notable newcomers lining up, including the Karl Burke-trained Lady Titania. Richard & Peter Fahey saddle two and Kirton Angel appears their main hope given that she’s the choice of Oisin Orr. Preference, though, is for ELEVATING, whose pedigree suggests she’s all about speed and, with her yard among the winners, it would come as no surprise were she forward enough to strike.

GET OUTTA HERE could be considered an unlucky loser at Goodwood last time. Trapped against the rail, he flew home once in the clear and missed out by only a nose The winner has subsequently gone in again so that form looks solid and David Menuisier’s charge gets the vote. Yarmouth runner-up Luzon Heights has been threatening to resume winning ways. He’ll likely be thereabouts once again, while Zarvali could also land a blow.

Another competitive handicap for 3yo+ horses, run over the shortest rip in UK racing, just five furlongs.

A final handicap but with an added dimension to the contest, in that this time, all the riders are still apprentices.
Connections can reduce the weight carried by their contender by choosing which apprentice jockey to use; the level of the reduction depends on the past success of that apprentice. You can see this reflected in the bracketed figure after the rider’s name Rising star, Mason Paetel, has enough winners in the bank to mean that High Fibre gets no relief; whereas the Toby Moore/Green Sky partnership are 7lbs better off, as the young pilot learns the trade
Pick the winner and then you can bask in the glory until around 2.04pm tomorrow afternoon.

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years
Leading course trainer (14-19): T Easterby (20 wins from 516 runners, 4%) runs GOLDEN WEST Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Easterby (9 wins from 82 runners, 11%) runs GOLDEN WEST Longest Traveller: GREEN SKY trained by R Millman, Cullompton, 275 miles.
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 8th July
GREEN SKY made a successful stable debut when dotting up at Chepstow. That was her first start since April so improvement looks likely from Rod Millman’s new inmate, with Toby Moore’s allowance cancelling out a 5lb penalty. Nightsinwhitesatin returned a beaten favourite once again when finishing a close second at Catterick. She’s not out of this and neither is Humble Spark, who went agonisingly close when last seen over C&D
